Chocobo dyeing R&D Thread - Post your results here!

I was at Ink Blue (the darkest blue, even darker than Soot Black) this morning and I decided to feed one Apple. I did receive the Feathers message from the one apple.... 6 hours later, no change. I thought the apple would do it because Soot Black has slightly more Red than Ink Blue and less blue as well. Ink Blue and Soot Black are so similar on the RGB scale that I think I am very close.

Ink Blue - 22 26 34
Soot Black - 37 35 30

So it seems like I need to lower the blue further and keep red slightly higher than green and maybe get them a bit higher?

Now, this is the most recent feeding at Ink Blue to try and aim for soot black.

If it is based on feathers changing messages, I know there were two documented reports of getting Othard Blue from 19 feathers changing messages. Though that was starting from Desert Yellow, so results could be different if you're starting from a different color.

I didn't mix with the order of feeding fruits, just one at a time of the 15 Plums until I was out, then one at a time of the 6 Pineapples, then one at a time of the 12 Valfruit.

When I got "Snow White" I went Pineapple, Plum, Valfruit, Plum in that order over 3 Feed Cycles. It's possible that the fruit you started with prevented you from getting your desired outcome.

Thanks for the info, I started from Desert Yellow...so maybe if I do more darken blue I'll get a blue colour.

From reading the accounts of people who were going for Snow White using the most commonly used method of 15 doman plums, 6 cie. pineapples and 12 valfruit, they either got Snow White or Lotus Pink. Im not sure whats accounting for the RNG there.

I got to wondering how to correct the color to get snow white from lotus pink. According from petra abelli's info we'd just need to slightly lower the red and blue channels and raise the green a somewhat equal amount.

By RBG -28 +19 -39.

How many Mamook Pears would that take?

I'm PRETTY sure I was on lotus pink before I got my snow white, and all I did was lower red and blue. I think it was 8 plums and 5 pineapples or something like that; I didn't keep an exact count, but I do know for sure I got the message once on the food to lighten red, and once on the food to lighten blue.

I got white by lowering red a lot, lowering green some, and lowering blue a little. Sorry, there were a lot of growth messages and I didn't count. Your mileage may vary.

Sorry, I think I wasn't super clear in my previous response. Since you're starting at Lavender Purple, the exact number of berry feathers changing procs may be different. We've already seen some other discrepancies, like someone who took a total of 17 procs to get to Lavender when he did it in two feedings whereas it only took you 13 when you did it in one.
Wish I could help more, but we just don't know everything about the process yet. =/

Ah okay. No problem at all, glad you responded ^^

I'll just do some of my own tinkering, maybe i'll try lightening red hues like my original plan.

so i fed my bird 16 pears, and got the feathers message at the 8th pear, then i fed 6 berries, 10 apples and another 3 pears, and i got coeurl yellow, kinda curious as to where that fits into the scheme of things,
i did get the feathers growing after every feeding after the 7th pear.

In Regards To Chocobo RGB Colour Scaling

A few pages ago it was mentioned that if you "Deepen" a colour that you also automatically lessen the remaining hues, as well as if you "Lighten" a colour you are increasing the remaining hues.

Some people questioned how this was even possible and maybe I worded it oddly so let's try explaining it again.

Ok, so when you think of a computers colour values that the monitor uses to determine colour, it looks something like this (using values ranging from 0 through 255):

*Example*

RED 0------------|-------------255 [128]
GREEN 0-------|------------------255 [078]
BLUE 0-------------------|------255 [205]

Now when you move the values around you reach all variables of colour. Maxing the RED slider to 255 while at the same time decreasing both the GREEN and BLUE slider to 0, displays a complete RED colour.

In another example, decreasing the RED slider to zero while at the same time increasing the GREEN and BLUE sliders to 255 causes the colour to display as a very vibrant CYAN colour.

In the last example, balancing all three sliders at the same value will display varying shades of BLACK and WHITE. Having RED, BLUE, and GREEN values set all to zero displays BLACK. Having RED, BLUE, and GREEN values set all to 255 (max) displays WHITE.


*NOTE: The Following Is False Information

Originally assumed, due to the tooltip's poor wording, we thought that the chocobo dye would work like this:

Darkens Red = Moves only the RED colour slider towards zero.
Lightens Red = Moves only the RED colour slider towards 255.

Darkens Green = Moves only the GREEN colour slider towards zero.
Lightens Green = Moves only the GREEN colour slider towards 255.

Darkens Blue = Moves only the BLUE colour slider towards zero.
Lightens Blue = Moves only the BLUE colour slider towards 255.

This would be an easy to comprehend way to do Chocobo dyeing, however THIS IS NOT THE WAY SE IMPLEMENTED IT (F*** ME, AMIRITE?)


*NOTE: The Following Is How The System Actually Works

The is what the tooltips actually mean:

DEEPENS RED = Make the RED MORE vibrant, and opposing colours (BLUE and GREEN) LESS vibrant automatically. (RED slider increases toward 255, BLUE and GREEN slider decreases toward 0)
LIGHTENS RED = Make the RED LESS vibrant, and opposing colours (BLUE and GREEN) MORE vibrant automatically. (RED slider increases toward 0, BLUE and GREEN slider decreases toward 255)

DEEPENS GREEN = Make the GREEN MORE vibrant, and opposing colours (BLUE and RED) LESS vibrant automatically. (GREEN slider increases toward 255, BLUE and RED slider decreases toward 0)
LIGHTENS GREEN = Make the GREEN LESS vibrant, and opposing colours (BLUE and RED) MORE vibrant automatically. (GREEN slider increases toward 0, BLUE and RED slider decreases toward 255)

DEEPENS BLUE = Make the BLUE MORE vibrant, and opposing colours (RED and GREEN) LESS vibrant automatically. (BLUE slider increases toward 255, RED and GREEN slider decreases toward 0)
LIGHTENS BLUE = Make the BLUE LESS vibrant, and opposing colours (RED and GREEN) MORE vibrant automatically. (BLUE slider increases toward 0, RED and GREEN slider decreases toward 255)

The values these fruits provide have an RNG window. Meaning that a lighten red fruit can decrease the red value from -3 to -6 while simultaneously increasing the green/blue values from +3 to +6; your mileage may vary.


This is how the Chocobo food colours associate:

RED<------------->CYAN (green and blue)
BLUE<------------->YELLOW (red and green)
GREEN<------------->MAGENTA (red and blue)

Now keep in mind that the Chocobo's default colour is 'DESERT YELLOW' which means that its initial colour sliders look like this:

RED 0---------------------|----255 [216]
GREEN 0-------------------|------255 [175]
BLUE 0--------|-----------------255 [080]

This means that any colour tweaking that needs to be done assume that these are the starting values.

To figure out the RGB colour values of your Chocobo's current plumage refer to the FFXIV Chocobo Colours spreadsheet. However, I would advise against using the recipe's found there as many users have stated throughout this thread that they do not yield the desired result.


EXTRA INFORMATION

So how do I make a white Chocobo?

Going off the RGB colour sliders, the colour white is achieved by getting as close to 255 in all colours (RED, GREEN, and BLUE). To achieve this you will need to feed your chocobo an equal amount of the types of food which say they LIGHTEN a colour (RED, GREEN or BLUE). That way, only one colour's sliders moves toward 0, while the other two move toward 255.

Now keep in mind your Chocobo starts at Desert Yellow which naturally has a higher Green and Red starting value, this means you'll want to feed him more fruit that increases the blue colour value initially.

So how do I make a black Chocobo?

Much like the white Chocobo, the colour black is achieved by getting as close to 0 in all colours (RED, GREEN, and BLUE). Okay, what i think someone should do, is attempt this, but only with the amount of "new feather" messages. For example:

Feed enough Doman Plums to get 11 new feather messages
Feed enough Ciel Pineapple to get 6 new feather messages
Feed enough Valfruit to get 12 new feather messages

And see if that also gets you snow white. If it does, then that will be confirmation that it is the number of messages for the fruit, and not the amount of fruit, that make the difference. And then we can figure out if that is too many, and how many "messages" are actually needed to get Snow White.

Think thats something to start with?

Except you're wrong, and that is actually how it works. It adds/subtracts from ONE color. Just one. Each food adjusts the slider up or down in ONE color only.

Okay, so your results are from 7 messages from plum, 1 message from pineapple, and 10 messages from Valfruit, so it means that combination will get you snow white, and it takes less messages than what it took for Karuson. So now we should see if someone can replicate this, get this exact same number of messages, on the first attempt, and see if you still get Snow White.

The sharpening and adjustment in colors from the filters will not look the same on your screen.

This. I can't stress this enough. If it worked how you think Raka, it would be impossible to achieve some of the Chocobo colours that people have reported with only a single fruit type (i.e. lighten red or darken red); they require modifications to the other hue values.

Sure you can, as the red and green already present contribute to the overall saturation of color. Blue is the predominant shade, but the others haven't been removed. Bleach a chocobo down to pure white then add only blue and you'll get a different shade of blue than if you added only blue starting from the default color.

I have not seen any evidence that proves otherwise. I've seen quite enough (white chocobos) that prove against the theory you are arguing.

Those white chocobos were not produced by simply feeding large amounts of one fruit at a time. And where's the black? It's extremely easy with the system you're suggesting. Merely deepen all three, one color at a time, and there you have it. Yet... nobody's produced this black. Why?

Being on my 6th feeding session, I don't have an exact recipe for you, I'm sorry. You get the deep blue by going heavy on Berries, but also on Pears and Apples to keep your Blue levels in check. If your blue is too high then you end up with more common blues you've already seen on this thread.

Assuming this info is valid it proves, yet again, what Momo and I have been saying about colour values is correct. Given the starting values of Desert Yellow, if the values didn't adjust automatically, achieving White this way would be impossible without using 2-3 types of berries.

Nope. Mine is still honey yellow. After getting five total messages that the feathers will change, there has been no change. I should have grown Han lemon's with the first batch. :/

Anyone know how to change Colibri Pink to Snow White ?

Could someone possibly post a picture of a chocobo having Seafog Blue + the Leviathan barding? I am looking to dye my chocobo this color, and use this barding combination.

First feeding: 21 Darken Blue 7 Darken Red 7 Darken Green (Plum Purple)
Second Feeding: 5 Darken Blue 10 Darken Red (Dalamud Red)

As per the suggestion in the spreadsheet I used the following to get Snow White. I did not keep track of anything else. These quantities were used to obtain a rough starting point towards white; however I ended up landing on it the first try:

Doman Plum x15
Valfruit x12
Cieldalaes Pineapple x6

White is easy. You just add a lot of the LIGHTENS color fruits. Snow White on the RGB scale is all + all RGB and there isn't another dye color anywhere near it.

Ink Blue, Deepwood Green, and Kobold Brown are all in the same value range as Soot Black, where Ink Blue is actually the lowest in terms of RGB value (which is why it actually looks darker than Soot Black). Another difficult part of obtaining Soot Black is that while the LIGHTEN snacks all do +color, the DEEPEN snacks do what seems to be + primary color and - on the other 2. So it's a more complex balancing act in comparison to going White.

This is right... kinda. Just like the DEEPEN'er fruits that give + to one color and - to the other two colors, the LIGHTEN'er fruit works as its polor opposite.

If you go by color values, Ink Blue is indeed deeper than Soot black in terms of values being closer to zero. To achieve Soot Black, you'd need to feed the Chocobo a number off all three Deepen'er fruits (that give + to one color, and - to the other two). That will transform your bird into the Ink Blue, which then you'd need to feed it a very few trio of the Lighten'er fruits, which will raise all the values evenly up to the values which match closer to Soot Black.

Hi everyone. So I tempted Snow White using the recipe on the spreadsheet and I know its all rng so my Choco turned out Lotus Pink. What would you guys recommend I give him now to try for Snow White? I'm just really lost and not sure what to feed him or how many. What do you guys think? <3

A few Green DEEPEN'er's should do the trick. I think that's the Pear.
