What's the point with that quite lackluster story in Endwalker?

Unfortunately that describes a growing number of the newer posters from what I've seen. They're also entirely oblivious - either willingly or otherwise - to how different the game used to be back in the 'good old days'.

In my opinion the golden era was ARR/HW/StB when there was more of an attempt to take a jack of all trades approach and cater to different groups of players. It's slim pickings for anyone who has a deeper interest than the Scions or content along the lines of Eureka/Bozja and Ishgard Reconstruction as opposed to new gpose features and furniture designed with 'venues' in mind.

It is what it is, though. It remains to be seen what 7.0 brings with it but much like Kaoru other games offer more of what appeals to me at present. The most one can do at this point is either leave entirely or drop some feedback now and then in the hope that maybe, just maybe, it'll be seen and passed along to the development team.

You are completely right that many gameplay features seem to have been abandoned in EW, such as exploratory content. The lack of depth is very clear to see. And as I've explained in another topic, I believe this can have long-term consequences for FF14 if there's an emergent new MMO that really pulls off PvE combat well (the fabled Riot MMO perhaps):

As has been discussed in previous threads ( which you didnt read ), the issues with those were both the future proofing issue and the fact the previous metrics were mixed, one of which is linked in a prev thread, less than 15% made it all the way in all zones. The content itself had poor longterm potential, which is one of the major issues with a zone of this type.

Bozja now is more or less a dead zone, with only PF parties running here and there once its current timeframe has elapsed.

Aveyond said that too...then bragged how he would be going to fresh content like Ashes of Creation...which was when i started laughing my head off. If he is going to pick a game, hed be better off picking one that ISNT vaporware.

AoC is going to be a free for all full loot pvp game with a lifespan of maybe six months AT BEST...if it ever gets released.. :D:D:D:D

As far as I can see: FF 14 has a long and happy future ahead.

Yeah. That being said, I've pretty much resorted to using other MMO's as a way to get my fix for exploration and immersion these days. There's a lot of ways in which FFXIV could have added some cool things to the game world to see and do but even after many suggestions on that front the design isn't evolving in the slightest. At most you get aether currents and the sightseeing log as opposed to hidden quests or treasure to find.

As much as I enjoyed FFXVI for the most part, in terms of exploration the same approach was taken. There's very few hidden items to find of worth and scant treasure chests. As for the story itself, it's another JRPG without alternate endings or player agency. I liked that games such as Breath of Fire IV and Shadow Hearts had different endings.

As for upcoming MMO's, I've my eye on a handful. Whether any are the ones to breathe some new life into the industry remain to be seen but simply prioritising being an actual game will give them a major boost. FFXIV's been around for ten to thirteen years depending on how you decide to count. It claims to be willing to stick around for at least another decade and I think it will - since FFXI and WoW are still around. Though I do question how much of FFXIV's success is down to it being a new place for those who became disillusioned with other MMO's to hang out in simply because it isn't them.

I'm cautiously optimistic for Ashes of Creation. Despite it being pushed as PvP focused, I've been watching their monthly updates and their approach to the other aspects of the game is pretty intelligent. If it can live up to even half of the promises made then I think it has a lot of potential. It's recognising some of the flaws present elsewhere in the industry and seeking to address them but also striving to be an MMO for people who actually enjoy MMO's...as opposed to being an MMO rapidly devolving into mostly being a solo experience.

I'd say my main concern is with the potential monetisation practices but at this point when FFXIV is locking exclusive emotes and such behind £250 limited edition statues, I can't bring myself to shun a game purely on that basis.

As I said, I'm remaining cautiously optimistic. The nature of the industry and funding for MMO development has changed over the years and it'll either be a success or it won't be. There's multiple MMO's on the market at the moment which are doing decently well for themselves including WoW, ESO, GW2 and FFXIV. Eventually something else will come along and either dominate the market or at least carve out a comfortable and successful niche for itself. It's just a matter of when.

I'm not particularly married to any given MMO, personally - though any that actually set out to have distinct zones for each playable race and are willing to have good looking, conventionally attractive muscular elven and human men immediately catch my eye.

Quite a few promising MMO's released too early and suffered as a consequence. Wildstar did a lot of things right, for example, though it released without much in the way of satisfying endgame content and suffered as a consequence. It's a shame, since I liked the art style and some of the lore was pretty intriguing - to say nothing of how great the game's housing system happened to be.

So I'd much rather see Ashes of Creation take its time and launch when it's ready. It'll either succeed as healthy competition or it won't. I'd be a lot more worried if meaningful development updates weren't being shown on a consistent basis and the developers weren't explaining their thought processes for particular design decisions.

Even if not better at combat, I'm hoping some of the newer/upcoming MMOs eat into XIV's numbers (although I don't think sites like LB are giving an accurate picture of paying subs because there's ways these can be inflated, e.g. through FLCs; we'll see how their Q2 accounts reflect on the game's performance) by being as good/better in other areas, if only to snap SE out of this complacence it's currently mired in. There does come a point (where I'm at, really) where I'd sooner just not play an MMO than play from a selection that just doesn't draw me in in any way.

Problem is a lot of its competitors seem to find ways to self-immolate. I'm hoping Blue Protocol isn't too badly mangled by either of AGS or Namco.

I will say I saw the new Encyclopedia Eorzea is on pre-order and I am torn on if I should order it. I would love more info about Shadowbringers stuff and zones I liked in Endwalker but I also don't really want to read more "And this is why Venat was right".

Okay.. And what percentage of players have finished all 200 floors of POTD, and 100 floors of HoH to warrant the release of Eureka Orthos? I can tell you these aren't over 10%

This doesn't seem to be a very honest perspective huh? I'd say it's almost backed by a bias and hope to believe there's correlation and causation of content type releases with very shaky data, presented as fact and authority.

Isn't Criterion dead already? At least Bozja/Eureka were alive throughout their respective expansions, Endwalker content seems to be DOA more times than not.

And no, a new Criterion dungeon that lasts for a week in 6.45 isn't going to revive the one from 6.25. That one's dead and buried.

I have a lot of opinions on the story, but the thing I'll focus on for now is Meteion and how her introduction causes so many problems with the plot that it's obvious she was shoehorned into it because the writers didn't want to follow through with what they started in SHB and make Hydaelyn a villain or at least a morally grey character.

I am convinced the writers never even planned on Meteion at any point until they were halfway through writing the plot of Endwalker.
She introduces a lot of plot holes, such as why Venat didn't bother using creation magic to create something to fight her instead of committing mass genocide. Hermes was also already aware of Dynamis before the Meteion incident, so wouldn't it have been better to leave him alone to find some way to counter the dynamis since his memory was wiped and he would have no reason to let the attack happen?

Also, the time-travel stuff doesn't really work well with SHB's time-travel. Graha's original timeline doesn't really work with the idea of there being a stable time-loop if the WoL is dead before they can time-travel, which would mean the Venat in that timeline would never have met the WoL and never found out about Dynamis.

And what was up with the plan to evacuate the people of the planet with the moon to some other planet? Didn't they say that planet was unusually rich in aether? So, wouldn't leaving just make things even worse and leave everyone defenseless?

The more I analyze the plot, the more flaws I find!

It seems to me like they ended up introducing Meteion in an attempt to contort the plot into justifying Venat's actions, but it just makes things worse the more you look at it.

Endwalker is very similar to a modern Marvel movie in that it is completely reliant on the audience's ability and willingness to turn their brains off completely and to not think about anything at all. That's an apt description of the situation. There's definitely a less of a conscious effort to cater to different personal tastes in general with the game these days. I know a lot of players who cannot simply 'turn their brain off' on a whim simply on the basis of not being wired that way.

There's also often a cynical bait and switch where promotional footage and developer statements will imply that there's a deep narrative at play but then they grow overly defensive in response to even light push back towards certain characters and conflicting characterisation.

It's not a situation unique to this game, sadly. One only has to look at how Henry Cavill was treated for a genuine interest and investment in the source material a certain Netflix show was working off of.

I never expected FFXIV to have the best storytelling ever, mind you - I just expected a tad more consistency and maturity in a story that decided to embrace some very heavy themes.

Well, I did the thing I said I wasn't going to do, and resubbed—entirely so I could access gpose, mind you. I wanted to put together an idea of what a character looked like, and also play with the virtual dolls of a few of my favorites for screenshot purposes. So naturally a certain muskrat decided to data cap everyone who uses Twitter down to the point where 15 minutes of browsing locked me out of the site. And now I can't share those gpose screenshots with my primary audience of the few people who follow me there.

On a related note, XIVTwitter is like the wild fucking west. Or Middle School, actually. At least I haven't gotten detention—oh wait.

I suppose I can catch up with the story now, though. Every cloud has a silver lining! Well, not so much silver as aluminum. Lead, really. I've heard... mostly that it's bland Sharlayan bureaucracy, a handful of FFIV references including one that exists mostly to pad out the Save the World plot for another patch cycle, and a bizarre Garlemald section that could've honestly been cut entirely. I guess I'll find out this month.

And on another related note, during the interim I began writing another fic—Ascilia, Scion of Light. A slight-to-major rewrite of 6.1 so far, possibly all the way up to 6.55. I can't imagine anyone here would be thrilled to read it given who the star character is, but eh. I write for an audience of one, and anything else is a bonus. Don't expect anything like introducing whole new characters or taking the plot in wildly different directions—though come to think of it I did introduce a new character in chapter 6, and will be fleshing her out further in the chapters to come.

I tend to find that with the way things are at the moment, the harsh complexities we all have to deal with ( that isnt you, of course, you're "awesome"...LMFAO ), in case it had escaped you, people go to movies like that so they can step away from the never ending drumbeat of the eternal news cycle, the worries they have at home in order to put a roof over their heads, feed their families, get some respite from the stress of their work, it doesnt surprise me that movies like Marvel do so well when you consider the alternatives.

Maybe, one day a long time from now, when you finally grow up and see what adult responsibility is, you will finally understand.

Endwalkers story, as a direct contrast to your own jaded viewpoint, has been acclaimed universally. That you personally dont like it we can see every single day..one actually wonders if you hate the game this much what the hell you are still doing here. Did you not see me make an entire thread saying that everything in 6.4 was either meh or good outside of the horrendous balance changes? Did you not see me say that P10S is an A tier raid, only barely kept from S tier because of one mechanic that was kind of cringe? Did you not see my thread where I went over the 6.4 live letter, and had an entire third of it dedicated to things I liked? I was also planning on making a thread rating all of the Pandaemonium raids, with some of the Anabaseios ones ranking pretty highly. I just have to get around to clearing P12S p2 before I post that one, I've been taking that last fight slower than I did with the first three. (Plus, Party Finder for 12 is horrendous)

If you haven't seen any of those I listed, then maybe consider looking at things I have said before assuming I can't be pleased. If you have, you're just lying.

I tend to find that with the way things are at the moment, the harsh complexities we all have to deal with ( that isnt you, of course, you're "awesome"...LMFAO ), in case it had escaped you, people go to movies like that so they can step away from the never ending drumbeat of the eternal news cycle, the worries they have at home in order to put a roof over their heads, feed their families, get some respite from the stress of their work, it doesnt surprise me that movies like Marvel do so well when you consider the alternatives.

Marvel movies are hardly the only thing you can do to relax. Your excuse of an argument logically follows that marvel movies can be anything. 2 hours of Captain Americas ass on screen? Don't like it? Replay your comment. It is however telling in how you see media.

It's not so much being surprised at their behavior as it is more of me simply running out of patience for their behavior...I can only lurk in these forums for so long without saying something that needs to be said.

Not gonna lie, I miss Kaiten too. Its removal just sort of sapped the fun out of Samurai, and I can't be bothered to level it past 80 anymore. It was arguably my most played DPS in Shadowbringers, too.



EDIT: It's a patch or two late, I think, but I finally dipped into Eureka Orthos. I tried soloing at first, hoping to use the experience to grind Monk up to 90. That... is not happening, lol. Dunno if it's because I'm coming in fresh or if the content is just straight up harder than HOH/POTD, but it feels like the barrier to entry for solo runners is a lot higher this time around. Matched party was an interesting experience—I had to wait a full 30 minutes for a party for the first ten floors, and got the same three people for 11-20. 21-30 was more active, presumably because those're the grinding floors, but I don't recall HOH or POTD being this dead while in their respective expansions.

As for what little story there was, at least from 1-30...

As funny as I find G'raha being reduced to a glorified key, it's clear the only reason he's here at all is because of the personal connection to the Doga/Unei clones. As otherwise, he could've easily been replaced by one of the spirit vessels he crafted. It was also neat to see a clone of Tiamat as the final encounter for this leg of things. But the sheer commitment in trying to paint the Allag vs Meracydia conflict as morally gray—without changing or adding any new information in Allag's favor—is nothing short of amazingly weird. The same expansion where it was revealed that Allag started the war by unleashing an army of voidsent, on top of their already existing crimes of invading Meracydia unprovoked, killing Bahamut, then capturing Tiamat, her children, Bahamut, and the Warring Triad to use as components in their plans for infinite renewable energy, then going "fuck it, burn the world" and unwittingly triggering a calamity in the process...

It is wild for that same narrative to then go "But you see, the dragons fought back" and act like that's enough balance the scales.

That said, I do appreciate being able to listen to Noah try and spin these developments in a positive sounding direction, even citing the Doga/Unei clones... and straight up being able to tell her "No, it was all fucked up".

I suppose on the bright side, the writers not letting us say that to a certain someone in 6.0 is one of the reasons I ended up writing Amidst the Ashes of Paradise. If they'd given me that option back then, I might not have done so, wouldn't have followed it up with Ascilia, Scion of Light, and might not even be here (because I need to be subbed to experience the story, natch).

... Also the aforementioned "But Allag did good, too!" bit reminds me of the Dachau Hypothermia Experiments, which I've been reading up on again today. It seems they've been thoroughly discredited. Neat.

Allag is in a strange place in general since it used to be tied to Garlemald quite significantly and the Garleans, realistically, should be pretty eager to acquire and reverse engineer as much Allagan technology as possible given the current state that their homeland is in. Yet these days anything related to Allag revolves almost exclusively around G'raha.

As for the matter of grey morality, I'd say the biggest issue with that is the game's habit of having characters or factions commit atrocities only to later reveal that they had a sympathetic reason to begin with. What they should be doing is exploring the nuance from the very start - especially with how much this game encourages a self inserts. There's merit to the 'show, don't tell' aspect. I'm generally not a fan of nations being reduced to 'mostly good' or 'mostly evil' in the first place, though.

Yoshi P mentioned something about players getting confused about lore once, since then they insert explanation sequences for every single little trivial detail in case players just don't get it. And we also got Active Time Lore, which is probably a good way to cater to people who absolutely can't follow the story at all.

The writing in FF14 is full of disrespect for the player's intellect. Maybe if they put ATL into FF14 too they can start trying to cut back on the "telling" portion of the writing.
