Pretty good example of aoe tanking.
From what I noticed people think multi target means just 2 mobs. I typically pull 3 groups so when they say "I tab halone combo and its more efficient." For you to get a combo off on lets say 5 mobs that would take 37.5 seconds to complete. Whereas with flash spam it would only take maybe 10-15 seconds.
How important is crossing Stoneskin & Mercy Stroke (read somewhere it's a small DPS boost, marginal, but still...)? I'm not sure I want to spend time grinding to those late 20-30 levels if they won't have big impact on my game tbh.
Mercy Stroke is worth getting, imo. Stoneskin is our best CC skill, but it's only situationally useful. You can probably play PLD with no CC skills at all though and no one would care.
Heyo everyone,
The only issues I'm having holding hate is on healers that use say cure and regen at nearly the same time. I also ran into a brd on an AK run with a relic+1, and it was also impossible to hold hate on him. In both situations I've listed; soon as I used provoke/shield lob, I loose hate immediately afterwards. The issue I'm running into is the healer is far from the pt, and the brd is running in kite mode. So running up and attacking is a very hard option, especially with a tanking a pack at the same time.
I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I read that 1 point of healing = 1 enmity (if this calculation is wrong the next statement may still hold true). I also read that provoke adds you +1 on the list. So if that's true, and someone heals you for 3k life, does that mean you technically have 3,001 enimty after provoke? If so, that's the original problem, since 1 tick of regen (not sure what average regen tick is) or dot dmg, automatically jumps enmity above whatever i can dish out.
Currently I have most of my gear in darklight, but my weapon is in dire need of upgrading (trying to eventually get relic obviously). Would a higher dps weapon help close the gap on that situation by large amount (as in higher dps weapon boost up flashes enmty)? Like does anyone have the curtain+1, and can hold enmity vs a brd with relic+1?
Stop using Provoke + Shield Lob. Shield Lob does NOT give much threat at all. If the dps or healer is still healing/dpsing you will never get the mob back after that. It's not reliable at all, either you want a combo'd Rage of Halone or just spam 2-3 Rage of Halone noncombo'd after a provoke, much better. I see people talking about shield lob this shield lob that but it is not a good ability. It's merely something you can use to pull mobs or w/e. The only situation it would work is when there's no further dots, attacks or any healing going on after you provoked it, which is pretty rare.
Healing is 1 heal point = .5 enmity points. That is correct provoke gives you +1 point of enmity of the person with aggro. As for the provoke, macro it's setup in such a way where you keep hitting it until you have aggro while trying to close the gap. So you provoke/shield lob, then it keeps lobbing until you are in melee range, then it will halone. If you have enough of a lead in theat you can go back into your normal tanking rotation.
Your weapon is your threat. For the most part you are stacking vit, so a new ring or piece of armor is going to be super vit heavy, but no str to help you keep aggro. As soon as you get 600 mythos tomes get curtana +1. Until then, ifrit sword is super easy to get and should hold you over until you get your curtana +1.
As for general threat in this game, just like in FFXI, dps actually have a job besides mashing their buttons. They have to watch the threat bars much how a healer watches health bars. If they choose to overthreat, which is mathematically possible, they will. When they pull aggro it is no different than a healer letting your hp drop to zero. In the way of team play and burden of responsibility it is pretty well rounded when it comes to the holy trinity. No role is a god. Everyone is part of a team and have to mesh well to reach their goals.
Ifrit's turned out to be walk in the park, both as MT & stunbot (but not when doing it both, and once I had to do that...). I'm up against garuda with my FC's raidgroup today, and I've been doing some research. This video:

looks useful, and I think I'll be able to do well on either tank role in this encounter. I'm a bit worried about Titan though - still got some parts that need to be swapped for DL/hoplite gear:

What do you guys think, will I be able to MT Titan? I've got ~900 Tomes of P. stacked, I'm not sure if I should buy gloves with them, or maybe try to get pants+boots or chest+head with them? I'm not really fond of the idea of buying chest though, since that'll be probably my first purchase once I got enough tomes of M., since it's supposed to be BiS.
Buy the pants first, also I would suggest that tank be in full DL gear and atleast get garuda's weapon especially since Titan hits hard. I think people will agree with me.Quote:

Oh, that reminded me of a question I had - just HOW important is a weapon from Garuda for Titan fight for a tank? I mean, PLD's dps is a tiny at the very least, and after killing the Titan you get your relic weapon - is it worth grinding Garuda for that drop? I'm lucky that I have a FC, so I'm not condemned to pugging Titan over and over again...
EDIT: The difference between my current weapon & Garuda's would be +5 STR, +5 VIT -4 Parry.
Question for the tanks out there.
Is tanking Garuda with the Immortal Flames weapon acceptable? I'm having really bad luck getting Ifrit's Blade...
Just exactly how much does DEX have an effect on block / parry rates?
Depends if you are having threat issues with WHMs in the Titan fight, even more so if you are going in with one WHM only. The fight requires a good amount of Medicas to be tossed out so you really have to be generating a good amount of threat in this fight compared to fights up to Titan. Keep in mind that the stats aren't the important factor in the weapon upgrade, it's the weapons based damage stat. The +2 to base damage for the Garuda weapon is HUGE and makes holding hate on Titan much easier. It's by no means required as a solid rotation by you and proper hate management by the WHMs in the fight can make Ifrits sword or maybe even the GC sword sufficient but the Garuda sword just gives you and the healers one less thing to worry about it a pretty hectic fight.
I know this topic was made a while back, but today i thought i'd try something crazy:
In sword oath i'd wait until the MT in CM would get full hate, then i'd spam the heck out of RoH without combo. My current CD is 2.44 and working on 2.4 and i noticed that hate is realllllly quick to get until i have to swap to shield oath to take the hits, then it's back to combo mode if i wanna do 'damage'. The guys all had better gear than me and would combo, so i'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience on harder mobs as i've only done so on ifrit, garuda, and normal stuff.
*edit* i forgot to mention that HQ Militia was somehow forgotten here. Tanks can easily get their hands on 3 to 5 peices and meld them to the point where they're close to darklight but less effort. After looking at what i have, materias i've yet to apply, and boots i realize DL is only a few def and 170hp/~15str more than my auction house gear and all it took was selling 2 potash to get it. That alone allows me to save up tomes for accessories (and possibly other jobs) or make money to work towards my heavy darksteel set if i wanna do 22 runs for a set. The work and time really doesn't justify DL imho and especially with my play time.
Quick question, what is the Block Rate cap in this game?
As far as tanking titan, I had 0 problems doing Titan and the first few turns in Coil with 5 hoplite pieces, and I had the grand company weapon/shield. Darklight is NOT needed.
Hoplite is enuf for Titan HM & few first boss of Coil.. The only matter is the right timing for a PLD to pop his/her utility skills :D
My team didn't call me "vegetables armor" anymore after I go through Garuda HM and so on due to my GC sword & shield and full set of Hoplite armor (all green equipments) :D
If u have no luck for getting HM weapon, don't push your luck.. Just do it again and again with "Skill", not "Gear"..
U will see how it boosts your morale when tanking turn 5 :D
Congrats! But I'll gear up for sure, I'm way to stressed about wasting 7 other folks' time because the lack of my skill/gear combined...
EDIT: Another question: does the BiS gear, AF/tomes/BoC/relic have materia slots? There are none listed on xivdb, but they still have some information wrong...
In response to all the questions about gear requirements, it's a team game and all about balance. If you have a well geared tank you can have healers that are not very geared and the other way around. If you have bad DPS you may need a combination of both well geared healers and well geared tanks. It's all about how your party meshes so take that into consideration. As I said I did titan with a rotten shield, but since darklight is insanely easy to get I went ahead and got all of it in a few hours.
As for the question about block cap, I was not presented with that data so i haven't compiled it into this reference guide
I also noticed someone asked about dex. It's not on your gear so dont worry about it. Just follow the gear formula at the top of the gear post. I have noticed that I lean towards determination more than parry though even though I state they are equal. Our dps are getting pretty geared. We have a few people with 2 piece AF2 and above now and I mitigate well enough so my main focus right now is threat and control of the battle.
Heyo,
Just wanted to say thanks for the guide and feedback PixelShader! Was able to tank garuda hm with ease. Instead of getting an ifrit swords, i got garuda's instead (while doing the quest for curtana). The skill speed should also help a ton. Any suggestions for gearing up for Titan?
Thanks again for all the help.
Can we get daily bumps on this till forum mod wakes up and makes it sticky
Nice thread was nice to get a better insight from another persons perspective.
I agree with it getting sticky'd.
I agree as well, helped me a ton!
keep on bumping until stick'ied
Thanks for the support guys! That would be cool if they stickied it. I have been keeping an eye on the thread and updating as needed. I am still hunting data on accuracy requirements, but I can't find any. I am on BC turn 5 @ 55% and don't seem to be missing at all. So I still rank it at 0, but I do prefer determination over parry. I may look at adding some sort of symbols that show "highest mitigation" or "highest enmity" per item level for ease of use on the gear post.
I have a question: in terms of food buff, would parry +8 or vit +8 better?
Vit. Stacking Vit allows healers to take focus off you and keep others alive. It also synergizes with stoneskin and other things talked about in this thread. A few people mention stacking vit makes your a mana sponge, but I haven't seen our healers run out of mana. The only situation they have mana issues is when dragoons chain die because they are dragoons.
This all looks pretty spot on. The only thing you dont have is HQ crafted Gear in the Gear Listings. Such as the HQ Rose Gold Accessories are better than Hoplite, but Hoplite is better than NQ Rose Gold.
Also not having the Feet/Legs apart of both Feet and Leg lists is a little annoying but easily understood.
Nice Job!
Noobish question: Can you equip two DL rings?
No and Yes
You can equip two different ones
You can't equip two same ones
Oh well, one less item to grind tomes for. ATM Chest bought with ToM, got AF1 head (I'm doing AK runs each week like mad, never seen hoplite head drop), rest is AK minus hoplite neck + ring.
I'm wondering on upgrade prios right now. I bought Valor Surcoat (it's pretty!) and am not sure if I should buy shield upgrade first, or head piece if AK drop doesn't erm drop for me till next week. Any thoughts?
All of coil should be around 463 acc cap for melee. But I've heard of someone report a miss at 463, so it might be 464. But people have also said 472. No one knows for sure yet.
Acc should be a priority until cap. Do not go into coil undervaluing Accuracy.
Why?Quote:
but I do prefer determination over parry.
Determination does not increase the healing you receive from others' healing spells.
Every 4 points or so of determination is like having having 1 point in strength. I would place parry (to hit next tier) over det.
