I find this thread very interesting. I'm from US and I experience everything you guys are describing on a regular basis. I had just assumed the servers were in JP like how all the FFXI servers were in JP. To learn they are actually a lot closer to home is a bit shocking. I think there is more here going on in the network code than the unfortunate side effect of dealing with travel time latency.
Regardless, I really hope you guys are able to get servers closer to you. It should be standard practice for any online game these days.
Bump from south africa. an EU data center will be about 50-100ms less which will make a huge difference. Currently won't be able to move out Titan's spam ability even if i move the split second it appears.
There will likely not be an EU Datacenter. There are several very simple reasons. 1. Cost, it costs millions to stand up and maintain a Datacenter, each server is extremely expensive. 2. Migration, now we need to migrate from one datacenter to another, this will be just as dangerous as launch day. 3. Funding, currently SE let everyone play FFXIV for free for most of its live in 1.0, bearely drawing anything from subs that went straight into 2.0 development that SE has spent a good bit on already. then they bought datacenters in NA at the popular request of the Playerbase, spending millions, and now they stood up more servers, a nice chunk of money again possibly millions. all while not drawing a single subscription yet for 2.0, and now you want them to fund a datacenter in EU. whats another few million!
It is a nice thought, but with little benefit to cost. a good opinion but with logic and reason applied not reasonable. Unless its a year or 2 down the line, even then its iffy.

I live in Australia and play on Balmung becasue all my NA friends choose it till xfers are in, i thought thats fine i can handle having more lag played wow with them for years and my lat was 250ms for that game i never had trouble playing at all. now when i play this game i cant even get out of the aoe even if i move at half cast and move like 5yrds+ away i still get hit, i asked my friend on your screen where was my character and she said my character didnt start to move after he used the attack. my lat for ffxiv atm is 450ms idk why it's so much higher then it was in wow. I just hope after they fix all the servers the latency will go down some but i doubt it
U're underestimating the ammount of EU players playing.
if they stop subscribing (and they will, right now they think the lag is because servers are full), they'll lose more money.
And more datacenters in europe means less datacenters in NA, so they would save some money there
I know, but it's still free month, many will leave after it ends. Plus, if arrstatus is correct, I have a ping of 80ms which is about the same that I have in WoW EU located servers. I believe most of the lag problems some people have are due to temporary launch server congestion rather than distance. And since the cross server grouping includes the NA ones, you'll get people to team up no matter what time you log in.
Video sample with lag, animation, "hit detection", server problems :/

Am from denmark, same boat as most people i havee 100mbit con i get hmm about 100+ to the Servers but i know its prob higher and playin a tank i had to give up in some instances due to the server lag and even watching some other people with worse cons than me i can see them moving on my screen out of aoe yet they still get hit and die. its a shame i realy enjoy the game but to die to stupied crap like that is not fun I rather pay more to have one in the Eu than is other side of the world,
and what big mmo company does not have a Eu server hell i get better ping play a jap server
europeans dont even get ways to contact customer service so we sure as heck aint gonna get a datacentre. wont stop me living in hopes though :)
as a legacy player that could not miss any of the ifrit plumes in 1.0 , and i dodged every single one in 2.0 im already glad with the improvements
but closer would be beter :D
from belguim btw
It's playable when there's not much lag, but still even in the best situation you need to be out of the AoE circle at least 1 second before the actual attack...
Now that the number of players has exceeded the exceptions it would be nice to have the EU servers on a datacenter in EU. One can always wish :D
Badly need EU servers, HM Titan would be so much fkin easier if you had the correct amount of time to dodge.
you can ping around the equator in 200-300 miliseconds, location is not the full problem.
its the routes between the two points causing the lag more routes slower connection every server that data has to go though will slow you down.
If it helps the EU FFXIV community, ill +1 this
Even the last 2~3 mmorpgs i played, which were f2p, they had european servers...
I have fiber connection, and i really cant understand how can this game have lag..
Raiderz - f2p game, got 0 lag
Dota 2 - f2p game, i can even play it in NA servers without any lag.
Please give us a Europen DataCentre, and please don't wait till most of the European players leave duo to being impossible to dodge the end game bosses (duo to lag)..
There was massive thread in the beta forums about the lag.
Yoshi made a post and in it he stated that your characters position is sent to the server 3 times a second.
So add that to your latency to figure out how much time you need to be out of the aoe to avoid getting hit.
German efficiency is a much propagated myth. If the servers had been in Germany, log-ins would not have been restricted, the servers would have died under load, support tickets would still not have been answered today and there would be around 70000 forms for SE to fill out before they can add more capacity. Germany is now a land in the firm grip of bureaucracy, the efficiency is long gone.
The lag I get to US-E servers in DotA2 is a lot more noticeable, than lag in this is; at least for me (ping <100 to SE datacentre, >100 constant ping in dota2). Of course game speed matters, but not all that much when we're talking about reaction-based skills.
Justice needs to be fulfilled.
I've already paid for 180 days and won't be unsubbing, i experience none of these lag issues that other "EU" players keep talking about and i just have basic ADSL, the only "aoes" i get hit by when out of the circle are the same ones that east coast players get hit with too due to the server position checks that are hard coded in to the game, which would result in me still getting hit by them even if i was on an "EU" datacentre in Europe.
Don't forget some ISP's are treating FFXIV like it's a peer-2-peer game and are throttling peoples speeds when sending data back and forth to the servers, i think there's even a dev post about it.
Bumping for the sake of EU players.
This would be awesome. When I move out of an aoe I am still unsure if I will be damaged or not. This is ruining the flow of the combat and making it a lot less enjoyable. Just wait for end game content where EU players won't be able to progress.
If F2P models like League of Legends and DOTA can put servers basically everywhere in the world, I dont see how a subscription based game with a 100% reliable revenue cannot match this.
Then again, most companies think that NA and EU encompass the entire world and give the giant middle finger to the rest.
SE move EU servers to Europe or i am out!
Yup, EU servers not located on another continent would be nice.
I would like to remember the nay sayers that the lag is noticeable on everything, not only aoe movement.
the healing people that get the heal but die anyway, casting time and when the spell hits, its very much noticeable A LOT in all casting related.
My EU brethren need some EU servers!
Have you not read my previous post in this thread? I'm from the UK/EU as well lol you don't get the "plus 0.1~0.2s" on every action unless your ISP is just bad, no matter what your up/down speed is if your ISP just blows at routing protocols or is throttling you because it thinks FFXIV is peer-2-peer then you cant blame the server location for a "local" problem as that problem would still exist with EU server because of your ISP.
Not to mention i have played many MMO's on NA servers from the UK without any of this "terrible delay" that people keep complaining about in both pvp and pve and i'm not even using fibre optic.
Between certain MS ranges the change in actions on an MMO is not noticeable, it only becomes noticeable and affecting of gameplay when you go between 1 range and another. And for an informatic engineer you should understand that, plus you should also understand slapping a data centre in the EU won't fix 90% of the problems people are claiming to have when it's down to how the game has been programmed.
Also need i not mention that shorter distance in miles/km does not automatically mean you have a shorter distance metric between you and the servers, for example right now you could have 10 to 12 hops between you and the servers in canada but if a server was placed in the EU and the data was being improperly handled and you were send through 30 hops to reach the EU server your latency would be worse even though you had to travel less miles/km with that data.
It would definately be nice to see the servers being moved to EU.
However I personally am not noticing anything of the lag, currently just level 28 though, but have never been hit in dungeons on occasions where I shouldn't be.
It doesn't even make sense to use skills like Swiftcast cause it takes up to 1 second for the game to realize I pushed that button.
Procs are a pain in the ass. Cancelling a spell is horrible.
I personally don't have problems getting out of aoes but it happens to trigger the damage even though I was clearly out before the timer etc.
European servers for european servers imo :D
