so tell me if the cap is 5000 and they are limiting log in how can they raise or lower that limit as needed.... if its already at cap how can they raise it.. and if htey lower it how can it be at cap?

which has absolutely no meaning with the fact that the servers hold 5000 people, and are full. It's the logins they are artificially restricting, not max connections possible to a server.
edit - that reads to me as the reason some people see a 47 queue, and others see 200, while yet other see no queue at all and just get "1017 world full"
what is says is they are controlling the number of people logging in to each server. by doing this they raise or lower the amount of people able to log in at a given time. so say they are limiting to 3000 people logged in and say teh queue system holds 1000. Anyone past that 1000 will get 1017 error. The highest ive ever had in queue howerver is been 200 ish. So they are limiting the log ins to prevent the server from reaching cap to prevent other systems from failing. the first couple of days of EA had no caps on log in restrictions i still had a que to get in. but once i was in nothing worked the dutry finder broke leves didnt work it was a mess. After that they put an artificial cap on how many people can be logged in to the server at a given time and then watch each server as needed and raised and lowered the queues as needed. anyone out side that queue line got the 1017. And that is what we are still currently seeing.
People who are all "why bother when people will just go around it" are really pissing me off. Ya, never try, great message for people. If you never try, nothing will change. AT LEAST TRY!!! It's better to implement something and as more reports of how people are circumventing it come account for each and every way they get around it. And then punish those who do those methods. It's better to do something about it and actually have something than do nothing and see no change. No wonder the US is getting into such a crappy state in politics, we see this mindset continue to increase.
Basically, signed and spreading the word.
i am the only one that does know what im talking about. They said right in the posts they linked they RAISE and LOWER the limits. how can they raise the limit if they are keeping servers at CAP. Cap means they cant hold more.... and if they are keeping at cap how can they lower it....
its not better to try.. the resources would be wasted at this time to put in an afk timer.. when those resources can be spent upgrading the new hardware and testing the software that is going in to effect this week to fix the issue all together instead of putting another bandaid on it. Maybe some time after the hardware upgrades then use the resources to build an afk timer. but not now its not needed.
incorrect. that is a different system.. that system can only hold a finite amount of people thats why its being upgraded in the data center, the cap on the server it self is being lowered to prevent things like the duty finder from breaking and to prevent overloads in zones from crashing the whole server.
Apparently you have no idea how easy it is to implement. And yes I have done such similar things. My job requires I implement those things into the service my job provides or their servers would also get overwhelmed -_-
And you're still pathetic for the "don't try" mindset. Seriously, if you don't ever wanna try, just be quiet. You do no good for anyone with that mindset.
Signed it for ya Wren. Not sure it'll do any good, but it's worth a shot.
Most major MMOs have some form of afk booting system. There's no reason this game shouldn't have one too!
there is a difference in trying something that might help and doing something that is gonna waste resources. Putting people on making, testing and implementing an afk timer is a waste of resources atm, when they can be part of internal testing of the new servers for stability. especially when they have a game plan in place to resolve the issues we are seeing in 2 days. Why waste the man power.
not to mention wasting resources on monitoring the system for people circumventing it. IE 3rd and non 3rd party programs. I can use my macro keys on my keyboard they would have no way of telling if im sitting there every 5min alt tabbing back in game hitting space bar or tapping W. also you would have people auto running in the Inn.
Are you saying it hasn't helped at all with the other MMOs on the market? Implementing a system to just auto-kick idle people will help free up slots for people who want to play, reduce some load on their servers, and will make people happier. There's no excuse to not have it.
Why do you think it'll be a waste of resources?
Or are you one of those people who want to stay logged in permanently when you can finally get on and don't wanna deal with it?
i am saying at this time its to late to start it, and that it would be a waste of resources to work on it now. When the real fix is just around the corner. After the 4th and everything upgraded and maintenance is done then they can start work on an afk system that will help future issues. Currently it wouldnt help alot because people would circumvent it becaues they want to stay logged in because they wont get back in, once these fixes go in, people will be less likely to try and circumvent it because they will be able to log in with ease.
You really think that this upcoming fix will fix it? have you not experienced such similar fixes before? And this is an even bigger waste of resources than if they added an anti-afk system. Programming is relatively cheap compared to getting full new hardware and installing it. And doing both would be more ideal. They are a multi-billion dollar company. They could definitely eat the cost now and get better PR and reap the benefits later.
doesn't solve current world 1017's unless people are willing to move. Those with friends/family will be less likely to do so unless they all move, which in turn creates the same problem on the new world.
All of which are super easy to detect, and mmo's have been doing so for years. You've been shot down on this argument before, yet still persist in using it.
Well SE already stated they will be implementing an AFK kick after they fix the servers come the 4th.
They said they will consider it, not that they WILL put it into the game.
"We are actively looking into the implementation of such a feature" - http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/73680
It's what they should have been doing sooner. Before the game was even out. It's cheaper and faster to program anti-afk measures, at least the most basic ones (and slowly patch in improved ones during maintenances) than it is to get fully new servers. It won't fix the problem entirely, no, but it'd help reduce the problem for people. Then the other thing would be to get GMs to kick RMTs off and perma-ban them asap.
I'm confused how a AFK timer will help, wait... let me rephrase that, in normal instances it would help, but I can't even play the game without 10102 or set my controller down without 10102. Then when I go to log in I get 1017, so how can the server be full if everyone is getting 10102 anyway...

if you are gone for more than 30 minutes you get logged off deal with it too bad so sad
and have GM's in game to kick macro makers and abusers of the afk system.
it will help the 1017s first off because they are upgrading the data center that holds the queue system. It will be able to hold a larger queue per server, and they will be lifting the login restrictions on the servers and actually let them go to cap before starting a queue.
Im sorry but you cannot detect a macro keyboard pressing 1 or a human pressing 1 there is no way to tell the difference unless a gm physically moves or contacts the player. IE is a waste of man power at this moment. Again im all for an afk auto boot system. But i am not for wasting resources on it at this time when they need to focus on fixing the problem not putting a bandaid on it. Once the systems have been upgraded then work on an afk system to lower queue times.
Yes, there is a way. A player won't sit there for 12 hours in the same rough area pressing - 1, 1, space, 2, space, 1, space, turn left, turn right. Just doesn't happen. If you do that, you're wasting your own time and I have no issues, but I will bet you just about anything that nobody does or has ever done that by themselves.
a lot of people go semi afk while they wait for a queue in the duty to pop. I have multiple monitors i watch netflix or something while i wait for it to pop. If they put an afk timer hell yes i would put a macro to auto jump me while i waited for the duty to pop. But your example would still take a GMs intervention to make sure the person was truly afk. Which at this given point in time is a waste of resources. after the 4th go for it. but now No.
that was a fast reply btw are you just sitting here watching the forums??
your queue won't take more than 2 hours. what about the people who would do it for 3, 4, 5 or even 6 hours? Yes they can be detected, quite easily. GM's are not server admins, they are Game Masters, paid to sit in game and deal with AFK bots (of the half a day kind), gold sellers and player harassment. They don't do squat with server hardware as you seem to think they do.
Still developing and implementing the Afk timer would take away from resources that could be spent on the new upgrades. It takes more hten just hardware to complete this process. You need internal testing of stability of the new servers. All this takes man power. No sense wasting the time building an afk timer boot system. This would have to be completely programed on their platform for the game from scratch... it probably at this point wouldnt even be ready to be implemented let alone tested before the hardware upgrades would be in place.
Which according to their posts is just new worlds. Will do nothing for those of us on full worlds already (unless people move, also unlikely if they are playing with a group of friends as many are).
/sigh
When will you understand, we are FOR the server upgrades, but we want the AFK kick implemented too, not just considered for implementation.
Why are you even arguing? We agree that both need to be implemented.
we need it after the upgrades go in place. you do understand they are adding new servers and upgrading the data centers. when they upgrade the data center the login server and queue system will be affected by these log ins. the duty find is gonna be spread across more hten just 2 data centers as it is now. which will promote stability and alow more users to use it. The artificial cap that they have implace on the servers to promote stability of these systems will be lifted hense letting more people in to the servers themselves and into the queue system. Along with other people changing to the new servers. After the upgrades are in place you may still see a queue on your server but you will not see 1017 because the queue system will be able to hold more players, and the limits will be lifted off the servers.
at this point i think we agree on we need one but i dont feel they need to waste development time on it now they need to focus on the big fix and make sure its working first.
My question is wh are you even wasting time and energy arguing about this drivel? SE is working hard to fix what they can because this is a deal maker or deal breaker enterprise business wise especially after 1.0, regardless if it is the servers being maxed out or the 1017 being a universal bug, either way, people cannot play and until that is resolved, aren't there better things you could be doing?
They have a team of programmers who could work on it while the network admins work in the data centres, I am a network admin and network engineer by qualification and know exactly how useless a programming team would be to me in server setup and maintenance.
Why not get the programming team to work on the AFK system, while the Network and server teams get to work on the servers themselves?
It isn't a waste of resources to delegate jobs to their required teams, it's good management practice. All of the work they are doing right now is network related. So what is the software or programming team doing?
i was actually playing hte game thats why there was a couple hours between my posts. But you are right its pointless for people to be upset and asking for an afk system at this time because they are working on a fix already. and its gonna be fixed and if its not fixed by the 4th the game will probably die anyways which then would fix the issue in its self.
a timed boot would be successful as long as it had some sort of "enter the code" captcha type event. But simple enough for controllers to do within the time frame.
10 minutes "idle" (Idle defined later) and the "Are you still there?" message pops up, prompting for a captcha-like event. Failure to enter it within time (or incorrectly) results in booting.
*Idle would have to be defined as no exp, no quest accepted/turned in, no location switching, etc and not just "standing doing nothing" as easy to do movement could be done constantly (even with controllers)
But still, not impossible.
for the people who suggest that such iddle thing is normal for asian mmos i have really simple solution - add this afk check/kick to EU/NA realms - this way asians will have they iddle time and we will have better game experience cause till now i think its establisehed that 99 % of players on EU/NA wont log out untill they are forced to by maitnance on wedesday -_-
