I love this game, and respect the dev team, but Square Enix crossed a horrible line.

I'm personally not to upset about their rule that you can't monetize videos, but I am a bit sad you can't use third party music with video content, or the song "Answers".

I made a video for the end of 1.0 that people seemed to enjoy, and I really enjoy making, but I had to take it off of youtube because of the new rules. Its unfortunate, and I'm really disappointed about it, but what can I do.

Another example of a Japanese company being resistant to modernization. They overwork their employees, don't pay overtime, value loyalty over efficiency, and the society prevents them from changing jobs or complaining. The result: the slow, sad, and painful decline of the Japanese economy. Not much can be done about the society, but the companies can change. I hope Square Enix comes to their senses on at least this small bit of our modern world. People playing FFXIV on YouTube is nothing but good publicity. Let them make their 0.003 pennies per view.

That's my 0.002 cents.

I know I'm gonna get slapped with the white-knight label for honestly not understanding one side of this issue, but I really don't care so here goes.

I'm not saying that SE's decision isn't going to affect their sales. But I also don't see the game suffering from a lack of sales or players (far more than they had expected, not a huge problem for SE), and there's plenty of other games to cover and monetize (not a huge problem for Youtubers). So what exactly is the problem? I'm legitimately asking because I want to understand. I've been in this situation before when I understood one side, but not the other. I just hope it's more than just 3 days worth of video getting 'junked', that seems like a pitiful topic to bother having 2 threads on the front page at the same time.

Putting some music on some game footage or some commentary is NOT work. At best it's a hobby

To be completely honest, Square-Enix have always been very anti-YouTube. I've had so many issues uploading videos of basically all their recent new games so it doesn't surprise me at all that they did this.
The monetize thing I can understand and don't see any problems with, but putting restrictions such as no third-party content on top of FFXIV footage is just beyond silly.

I'm a YouTuber myself and I already uploaded two videos to my channel, but I prefer clean/non-narrated videos so I'm probably good. But I can see why so many others are pissed and worried.

In my opinion, you can upload the video in Youtube or other sites. But you are not allowed to make money from your video via Youtube or Video Sharing Sites. However, I believe SQ-EX understand this point for hobby.

They happen to OWN the IP rights since THEY created the game so they get to say what can and can't be done .. YTers wanting to make money off SE's back are simply leechers who have an over-inflated opinion of their own importance and a hugely over-inflated opinion of their creative ability.

Let me know when you see a print media literary columnist print an unedited chapter of a book in a review and I will admit there is a discrepancy. There is no restriction on someone reviewing FFXIV or even making money off reviewing FFXIV. They just can't use SE's copyrighted materials while doing so unless they are given specific permission. This is exactly how copyright works in the print media. It's not even a bad business move. By doing this SE can ensure the quality of the reviewers who can show FFXIV's ingame material, making sure they set aside however many man-hours into exploring the game instead of releasing a half-assed opinion piece which is so common in YT reviewers these days.

This will also have no effect whatsoever on the hobbyists and people who review games for the simple pleasure of doing it.

tl;dr: This move is good business sense because SE can control the quality of reviewers that can display the product.

I agree with you OP. And iam not thinking about the Youtuber wanna be star and get rich with other pepeol content. But some pepeol are doing it just for fun in some artistic way. AMV, comedy, or Linkshell intro and many more way to just enjoy a new way to show what we like. I saw so many good video from other game that make me laugh. Even if i never played Wow i know who is Leeroy Jenkins. I know what internet is for aswell.

It's not good from SE to take this directions. :/ its slap in the face of the real fans.

People who don't understand what kind of consequences this has for SE in the western market, and for the community here, has not participated much in the community at all.

People can try and argue against the ones upset by the NDA restrictions all they want, but in the end they just (at least to me) appear extremely ignorant to the youtube/twitch community.

Good PR is good PR. I don't understand why SE would ever want to shoot themselves in the foot regarding that. It really makes no sense. So what if a youtuber earns a few bucks? One youtuber can bring in perhaps fifteen or twenty new players to SE, increasing their revenue by a lot. I don't really see the differene between a hired reviewer playing the game and posting his opinion, and a freelance reviewer playing the game and posting his opinion. Chances are the latter will have more sway and more experience than the former.

wow all the SE white knights on this thread is mind boggling. people do no post videos to "make money", hell the amount of views game-play videos have is not nearly enough to make any kind of money on it. The videos are free advertisement for ffxiv and most of them are guides and helpful tips. There is no real argument that i have seen that justifies this. Again saying people will make money off of this tells me that you do not know how youtube works.

The crying about this from You Tube personalities is beyond disheartening. I support SE's decision on how to handle their own IP, and I'm no White Knight. This made me lose respect for aforementioned You Tube personalities. I watch YT more than regular TV and have tons of subscriptions to channels, but they are really hanging themselves out to dry speaking up about this. We care if they are making money, but I for one don't want to hear about it. I am in sales. If I told my customers that there was a reduction or elimination of commission so I am unhappy and I can't make money selling someone's product, they would probably be offended and not patronize me. That is how I feel about these channels.

The community and the word of mouth is what will make the game stay fresh to people. Just today I finally managed to sway my fiance to try the game because someone he likes on twitch is playing it. BAM, a new customer who would otherwise never have tried the game. Strange, huh?

I am a subscriber to both Jesse Cox and Total Biscuit. TB is pretty much over MMO's in general, so I'm not too worried about him. He blathered on about receiving a free game code to review, and whined about having to play 40 hours to do a 'review'. His heart isn't in MMO's even though he made a living off of WoW. He is not affected. Jesse Cox has a bunch of other irons in the fire and will be fine. I am fans of both, but am completely annoyed by them showing us 'how sausage is made...' I do not care about their monetization. They are scared to reveal their paychecks due to losing partnerships, but are perfectly happy whining about monetization policies. They are a bunch of hypocrites on this issue.

Great, more anecdotal evidence. My friends sister played the game because XXX You Tuber talked about it. There aren't numbers to back this up, there could be just as many people that are turned off of buying a game, making things even out. But even that assumption is not based on evidence so it is moot.

It can go both for the good and for the bad, but still more people are being aware of the game. Besides, and this might be shocking, the MMORPG genre is pretty competative. People like keeping tabs, people like knowing about each other and seeing what other people are doing. People like seeing tips and guides. That's just how we work, and you would know that. I don't give a flying s* about any specific youtuber, even if I follow them, but I do care about the community and the sense of being together about something. This is largely lost when people are scared to share their gameplay or tips etc.

And bad, uninformed PR is terrible for the game's reputation. SE have kept control of who can use their assets when reviewing the game. This means they can place conditions such as 'x number of man-hours spent in game' to prevent uninformed reviews. This quality control simply isn't there in the mass of YT LP'ers who primarily want to entertain their audience to keep them coming back than to provide a duller, well-rounded review.

In your post you in no way mentioned that any of these reviewers could be giving bad press. You seem to only be seeing one side of the coin because that suits your argument. Take a step back and look at it from SE's perspective. They don't need 500,000 reviews where half say its good and half say its bad, they want a couple of dozen that say it's great.

There are tons of people which are making Videos of the Game, without monetizing it. Is that less advertising than someone making money out of it? It is delusional to believe that noone but those "Internet-Kardashians" are making Videos about FFXIV.

I'm going to say it, just because no one else has. Stop the Youtubers advertising the game before the servers break again.

Joking aside, even if they aren't going to get paid for making videos, as long as they make the videos good enough and the person who is commentating is entertaining, then people will check out there other stuff. As someone said before me, people don't find the game entertaining, its the PERSON which makes the videos fun.

If a Youtuber is serious about what they do, then they will simply see making videos for this game as another door to there channel.

...was in no way related to the actual thread it's in. Actual journalists get permission from SE to use their copyrighted material when they make a review and are not affected. People who are not receiving any kind of revenue are equally not affected. What kind of journalism were you referring to if not monetised user generated reviews on video sharing sites like Youtube? They are the only people affected by this issue.

It's not. The gamecode you or anyone else gets is only a license to play the game NOT to showcase the game. In fact, if they didn't have that license that allowed us to showcase the game it would be illegal to stream or upload video. What these youtubers need to do is what professionals do and contact the company to get an expanded license to be able to do more than the average Joe can do with the product.
