So from what I understand, people using their 1.XX character data must stay on their original Legacy server or transfer to a new Legacy server. But they must play on a Legacy server. Pretty sure this is how that works, correct?
Now my actual question is; Can brand new players choose to roll on a Legacy server?
I'm just wondering because I have friends that want to start up & would be starting brand new, but I don't really want to re-roll (at least not to start). Plus I have friends from 1.XX that I want to continue playing with as well.
Sorry for the confusion, the latest information on Lodestone is the more accurate. Character data can be transferred over from Beta Phase 4 to launch, and on launch a character edit flag will be activated for 1.0 players giving them a chance to change their character's appearance once.
We're still deciding whether this will take place during early access or on August 27th, and will update you once we know more.
Thanks for clearing that up Vinny!
what is this I don't even?Quote:
Don't feel like you have to choose a server based on your region or you will have a really bad laggy time. You won't notice the difference in lag between a server in your region or across the world.
servers that are physically closer to you will yield lower pings. This more or less assured by the laws of physics. There IS a measureable difference in lag between a server in your region and across the world. If you're close enough, your network link can be virtually instantaneous, while across the world it can easily add a third of a second or more to your packet travel time, on top of the server processing (which is also an issue, but one they've been making an effort to minimize)
while server response was the larger issue in 1.0, having a 300ms ping vs having a 80ms ping can mean the difference between dodging that crack or getitng caught in it- it can make the difference between that last ditch move to take out your PvP adversary going off or you eating dirt. People need to stop trivializing ping like it doesnt impact gameplay.
Picking on people is bad. Let' try to understand one another. Here's a simple minded man break down
Servers before: v1.0 After Server: v.20
~ All in Japan - ~ Legacy can only go to legacy -
~ No Cross servers - ~ Global servers to help decrease lag +
~ distance cant created lag - ~ implemented cross server instance quest n dungeons+
In my opinion and general understand~
Servers were in Japan so people might had chose a server based on its NAME and or POPULATION. Some people probably group together to one sever for or with their friends. Such as the role players choosing XX server. It wasn’t for let's say, Japanese people are here lets go there.
~I cant argue with or against diversity being a choice. Since the servers were REGION FREE. It didn't matter what you chose since you could never know the demographic of the sever.
Whether you spoke Japanese or English , the only thing that was known was the chance to encounter such people. Now with this split the encounter rate to meet such people will be lower. Why? Because people will naturally want to choose a Server close to their city. If it didn’t matter at all then why people want to know the servers location? Cause they want to know foremost the lag/ping. Not if they will encounter Japanese /English speaking people. And because people will want to chose a sever close to their city , they'll end up being in a sever with people who ...Guess what? Speaks their language with an added reduction in lag if negligible. So people shouldn’t blame SE for trying to take away diversity when they tried to make it happen with cross sever integration , IP region free blocked servers , and built in mediocre translation program. Having all the servers in Japan just meant for easier maintenance and control. Yoshi P said it was a challenge to do so and long hard decision to make global severs. Which means that they didn’t initially want it. It was us players who wanted servers in our home countries. So please don’t be so hard on SE for this decision and hopefully they'll reveal Eu and Na servers locations as to reduce lag on my server ...
The majority of the players speaks English or Japanese. As a Native English speaker I enjoy reading comments from and questing with Japanese. However most Japanese player tend to be quite hardcore and if your language skills aren’t up to par ...you wouldn’t stay very long or they would decline. So how many people who plays this game can speak fluent Japanese and English and is actually willing t and able to use it in game? I work in Asia and I know many people know English but they rarely use it even in obvious situation where it could benefit them. And some can speak well yet can write well. Let alone these same people would rarely be a gamer.
As an East Asian Studies graduate sadly I must say I 'm not fluent in Chinese nor Japanese and my written English can be bad at times. But All that matters to me is CAN I play with Japanese players. As long as this option stays open I Don't mind Global severs. And with the cross server function this can be achieved. So staying on my Japanese server Masamune or transferring to an NA server. Conversely = Playing on a Japanese server means more Japanese people with a possibility of lag or better ping with more people that speak my native tongue on a NA server.ARRGGHHH ( yes I know the time of day is a factor but I never had an issue with that...)
P:S I want to connect to the Chinese server if they have them. I remember one time I found some Chinese speaking players and it was awesome @@
They still are region free. If they weren't, we wouldn't have the choice of playing on the JP servers. As I wrote in other threads, the legacy servers remaining in Japan in particular will still have an NA community, along with many english speaking players who live in japan and live in the oceanic region (including Australia)Quote:
Since the servers were REGION FREE.
China will get its own service completely isolated from the rest of the world, per chinese rules. It's basically the only way for an outside business to push their product in China- to offer a version of a product specifically for the chinese market and no one else. Chinese service was announced very early in the game's history though, so unknown if it's still planned or when it will happen.Quote:

They are located in Montreal, Canada- fairly close to halfway across the world from Japan- In North America and closer to Europe than Japan is.Quote:

The verb "be" is the most important verb to learn in English. It's also the most complicated. In the past tense, it has two forms: was and were.
Were ~ is used for plural nouns, in this case serverS. But in any case I never said the servers weren't region free.
V 1.0 servers are no longer active and running with ARR they will have new servers , better servers actually, with cross servers integration. And the beta test are testing and stressing them out. So in this case I'm saying that the two servers both old and new are region free. Or rather the old servers were region free and the new one will continue this.
All of the servers in Canada eh? Can't see how's that's better for EU since its just as far to Japan ><
Tell me about it. I know about fifty people IRL here in the UK who play MMOs. I'm the only one who played XIV. It's an uphill struggle trying to get people to give ARR a second shot. I've got three friends to pre-order, five friends who are undecided and forty who consider anything that's not WoW a waste of their time^^
I hope we can have server transfer after launch . I'm in Korea so Japan is fine but when I go state side I'd like to transfer T T
At least allow one free transfer or a small fee...
Ya i know how you feel all my friends when i was 13+ only played WoW. I only had 3 real life friends who play FFXI with me and one of them is the person who got me into it quit pretty much few months of me getting it.
I'm hoping FFXIV become a big thing but i just have a feeling that it wont. Even tho a lot of people are sick of wow and want something new FFXIV so it may be hard to get people to play a somewhat wow-clone.
They said that the first year of FFXIV there no point of transfer but they are going to add it at some point.
Nope. London to Tokyo is via a combination of land and undersea cables passing through the Middle East. Supposedly last year a cable was to be laid linking the two Metropoli via the Arctic Ocean, but there's been no news on that in over a year. Another plan-in-motion is to lay undersea via the Northwest Passage, connecting to Canadia on the way.
Either way, Montreal remains closer.
I said most but then might be different in the UK. from what I saw here in France, Pro/business contract take the more direct route you mentioned but consumers are stuck with the long and cheap route through the U.S. After, yeah, It's a 100ms gain using the ME/Russia route, not something that would improve gameplay by much anyways.
that's how the route looks from my home

Out of curiosity, can the servers become full and prevent players from applying for the transfer?
Since I haven't seen anything on this matter and if the servers can become full, this can and most likely prevent friends/ls mates from moving into the same server to play together.
In Beta phase 3, you're able to create characters on both data centers, so we encourage you to try your response times on different servers to determine which server is best for you.
Regarding playing as a Legacy character: when you start the game for the first time, you'll be displayed in your starting gear just like any other player and your starting city will depend on which battle class you choose, regardless of what you've leveled in FFXIV 1.0. You will have the Armoury unlocked right away, and can change immediately upon logging in. However, you will still need to do the new class quests for each guild since they're completely re-done.
I think this just applies to Phase 3. The unique intro will probably be in Phase 4
So from what I understand, in a recent interview with Yoshi, once the applciation are up to transfer, it will list how many spots are available in that specific server. That way you can know if your whole linkshell can transfer there.
Now what I would like to know is if any of the legacy servers in NA/EU were near capacity or were getting close. It would be such a shame if some were close only to be clogged by player's account in which they have no intention of returning. Just imagine a full server with half of it completely filled with non played accounts. That would just waste such great space for other adventurers who want to come and join you in that server; like friends or family.
Any community rep can answer this, maybe ease the worry and can inform us if all legacy servers still have plenty of room even before the transfer applications are up giving people the chance to leave servers? Thanks!
This final edit has to happen in early access imo as that's the start of our "reborn" characters journey for pre-order peeps.
Also meteor survivor players having a unique intro sequence sounds pretty cool. I didn't think of that, but it makes sense compared to getting "new player" intro on old characters.
Phew good.
At least this way 1.0/Legacy Characters can choose what city-state they wanna start with.
Limsa Lominsa 4 Lyfe.
Knowing different languages does give you a slight edge and diversity in gaming. I know chinese.. well since I am chinese.. And I know Japanese since I learned it for 6 years + lived in Japan for over a year. And I guess since I am typing some English.. I possibly do know English as well. The biggest barrier that I had to overcome to play with my japanese linkshell members was time difference.. Hated it.. I live on the west coast now.
I think I am going to leave my JP based server and transfer to a NA server though.. Very high possibility.. I just need to know at least one decent person from Ridill who is transferring to make me transfer too !!!
We're not starting at level 1, we're starting in the level 1 race specific gear. Our levels will remain, we just have to do the quests to gain access to the other classes again. But that's where it gets confusing as the dev post says two things.
Do we need to do the class quests to gain access to the class again? Why do we "need" to do the class quests this time around? It's stated that we can change to our other level 50 classes immediately upon logging in but then stated that we need to do the class quests. Is it simply a poor segway into saying that the class quests we did before are gone and if we want to progress the class story we need to start the class quests from scratch? Clarification would be greatly appreciated.
@Marta ~ I think what they are saying is our 1.0 completed quests remain. 2.0 introduces new quests which give new spells/abilities. You have to do those new quests to obtain those new spells/abilities.
@Kirito ~ I think we may not have airship access at start as we have to progress in the main story (new main story) to be able to re-enlist in a GC. Part of that new main story line involves obtaining airship access.
Posting from phone.... :)
I agree. Do returning characters have a different opening? If yes, then will the returning opening be available in phase 4 (since our progress probably will be carrying over from there)? Even though it's quite a ways off I'd like to know before phase 4 starts. I don't want to possibly miss out on the returning character opening just because I play my character in phase 4.
As Hvinire stated, the class quests have been completely redone. That means that they have a different storyline to them. We'll have our previous levels in the classes and access to the class (hence the "Armoury unlocked right away, and can change immediately upon logging in"), but will start at the very beginning of the class storyline. I'm glad it's this way. I didn't really want to have to create a new character to be able to see the new class stories. What I'm really wondering is how the AF is handled. Will we be able to do the new quests for the AF? Since some of the AF (like the WHM body) is storyline-wise unique, it will be kind of odd to quest for another copy. I would rather have that awkwardness than be locked out of the story.
Thought I saw that we keep our job skills that we've already earned.. *however* we will have to do the class quests to get the new class skills (Impale, or w/e the throwing skills is on LNC and Scathe on THM for instance)
Sorry but this needs to be clarified big time.
I believe it was said that 1.xx characters would be starting in a unique area and we would transition to the GC we signed up to before. Now it sounds like none of this is happening.
Is this only for Phase 3? Or is what I said above planned for Phase 4? If so, I believe you should at least explain the situation to us.
Since they are only testing the importation of 1.0 chara data in Phase 3, it makes sense that we won't see our spiffy intro until we get our characters back for good. Relax. lol
You just might notice a few changes in the intro when logging in with a version 1.0 character. :)
