Not in FFXIV, :) Best gear is self crafted-self melded materia ;) go figure other MMOs suck because crafting wasn't really needed till end game, which bores me. At least XIV did it right.

Making the materia system FF7 slot based wont eliminate the need for crafters. reduce maybe, but someone still needs to make the gear to get slotted.
Last they said before this, they were going to increase meld rates and do some other balanicng stuff with materia so one piece with multiple materia isn't OP anymore.
I find this reversal puzzling. The whole point of multi-melding was supposed to be extra powerful abilities. From the beginning it was sold as a way to be OP... and now that's suddenly bad?
Anyway, I don't know what caused the change of heart, but I would like to still have something to strive toward besides mediocrity.
Yes make it where the crafters have to put slots on gear to be able to slot materia so you can't just slap materia on a piece of gear rather take it to your crafter buddy have them put a slot on the piece of gear you want (with chance of fail and not sloting or chance of putting in more slots with hq) and boom now you can place a materia in but will need a jewel crafter (maybe) to get it out without breaking gear (doing it yourself without jewel crafting will break gear..why not?)
I thought it was because the korean upgrade system is just frustrating since its all about chance and nothing about skill or time.
10000 hours, 10 hours you still have the same chance. Though imo that means totally modifying the system from how it is now.
Well you'd make dropped gear have slots, and crafted gear with slots. Now that dropped gear has slots you would give crafted gear a slight buff since both would have their own terms of standing. Then add more recipies to crafters such that there are epic recipes that are par to par of dungeon equipment in strength and challange to get, and then step up gear that is fairly cheap and can get you a quick leg up.
Edit: I like Forgo's idea of letting crafters of the type of item they craft they can add slots to it.
I'd prefer to see slots and costs with non stackable materia.
so you could have a 2 cost strength materia +5 strength or a 1 cost strength materia with +3 strength.
With a 3 slot armor you could go:
+5 Strength
+3 Dex
Or
+3 dex
+3 strength
+3 mind
That way you could think about the strategy of stats.
But then if you are thinking only a single slot, that isn't what people wanted. the original plan for melding many materia is much much better than slotting, my understanding of slotting is like more akin to you can only slot up to 5 slot of materia instead of what we have, melding multiple times up to 7x with very low % of melding chance.
It give more sense of a challenge to do so. Then you're regular MMO just slot that gem in and be done with it. zzz
Yeah Shougun, you lost me at "Korean Upgrade System" lol. If you care to, you'll need to break it down for this neophyte.
Have you played many korean games (not trying to be rude, I've played like 10 and all of them had it lol)? They almost always have this upgrade system where you spend a lot of money at a chance to upgrade your weapon. Each time you upgrade it your chance to break the weapon goes up. So getting a max level weapon is all about chance. (The F2P ones have this one most often)
You can only go up to 5 slots anyways in FFXIV lol, you just probably will break it before then.
I see the current way you have a chance to lose gear and materia, new way mentioned, including crafter puts slots in requested item, you only would lose the equipment. With how the system of double-RNG was with 1.0, I would rather the loss of fail not be as great.
Also, with non-stackable materia, people wouldn't be able to stat stack, which i see as a problem with the old system and is why crafted items became OP when people got lucky. Instead they will have to balance their stats out.
I dont think there should be materia slot costs tho. They should all just take one slot, and instead additional duplicate materia added of the same stat in the same piece would be reduced 50% to discourage stat stacking.
Oh I don't have an issue with changing the methods of melding. I'm just curious as to why they saw the need to lower the effect of materia.
Mm... I saw that as more of a design problem with the fight itself. I don't see that as the materia's problem. I DPS'ed higher than the BRDs and PLD on WHM of all jobs.
But if I can't be strong enough to make fights run more smoothly, be it tank, healing or DPS, wouldn't it just make everyone more or less the same stat wise?
No one seems to care but imho.. WHM OP!!! lol I've seen a WHM with non DD gear deal near my damage before and I wasnt taking breaks, wasnt missing my excurciate combo, and I had DD gear on. (It didnt help the monster wasnt weak to my elements though).
WHM stone on a stone weak monster will win a BLM any time in DD. Its kind of annoying actually. Who knows in ARR though.
lol WHM was not OP, it was just stronger than people are used to seeing. It's nice to see a healer that doesn't hit like a baby. I liked helping DD on WHM. It made it more interesting and less boring.
Thanks for posting that Reika, but it still looks like materia won't be worth as much as it was. In time or Gil.
So how am I supposed to pump up my character stats along side my newly wimpified materia stats? Splitting the stat pool just seems to make it more complicated. :(
Well you'd still pump up your character with materia, its just less obvious when someone is single wielding or dual wielding. (hoping there will be some cool materia like add sleep effect, or abilities)..
I'm going to have to test what they mean by this stuff though, like I wonder if that means I can solo more stuff naked  lol
Well.... Assuming you only get limited stat resets I'd be careful how you allocate your character stats (since its half your character now).
I hope there is more calculations given to players. Else I'm just going to stick to my stats and save my respecs till someone uses theirs to figure it out ;P lol
Same here. :(
I hope they get materia to work on a slot system like in ffvii. I also want to be able to keep my materia and level it up over time like in ffvii. Not that they will do it, but that's how I always pictured materia would work when they mentioned materia initially for xiv.
So the dev team changed mind? Time ago Yoshi-P said that the materia system will not change greatly, but they will raise the % of success for multiple meld.
I hope in no more luck system, but in predefinied slot like, normal mode content 1 slot, hard mode same piace but 2 slot, and same with craft, nq 1 slot, hq 2 slot to place materias..
I would love SE to do as the OP suggested. Both ideas are solid. If SE implement this idea or close to it, I'm sure the community would welcome it.
