DAMN IT SQUARE-ENIX WHY CAN YOU JUST GIVE ME EVERYTHING I WANT ALL THE TIME WITHOUT QUESTION!?!?!?
I, uhhhhhh...don't take this the wrong way, but if you can't figure out how to sketch out a simplistic diagram of how an MMO's player data could theoretically be structured in a database, you're probably not a very experienced programmer. The two "issues" that you mentioned are easily avoided via simple normalization (which most database books teach you about in chapter 2), and flat files offer no useful advantages over a relational database for this sort of task (and a significant number of disadvantages).
MMO player data is not inherently any different than a large datastore of customer data, marketing data, or other such things. Relational databases are more than able to easily handle the amount of information FFXIV would need to store and then some, and do so every day all over the world.
Claiming no specific knowledge of how SE structures their data here, obviously, but to suggest that flat files are somehow more likely than a database structure is, I think, a little absurd. Migrating all of that data from 1.0 to 2.0 will be no easy task, and the team wants to give themselves as much leeway as possible to migrate, test, verify, and -- if necessary -- fix any issues that come up during the migration. I can't blame them for it; we'd all (understandably) be extremely upset if our character data got messed up in any way due to a rushed migration, and they want to make sure that they have enough time to make sure it gets done right. I'm all for that.
I wish I could Comprehend Programming.. I'm just a wittle Computer tech =( teehee!
True. There are what? About 1k on each server just to guess. Could be more or less then that and I wouldn't be surprised either. If all of the current players left because of this character data save issue just like u say it would be better to have 2.0 non bashed by 1.0 veterans bad mouthing the game causing all the new comers to think twice about the game. Which by the is the last thing SE needs when 2.0 is released.
Its going to be a free playtime. Gives us a chance to keep in touch with friends (some of us have some). Gives them time to get everything perfect with the upcoming game. If they really wanted to they could shut it down, save the electric/hosting costs and focus on 2.0. But they're saying hey, while we transfer everything, would you guys still like to log on and talk to eachother? Thats the whole reason they're asking, because they're not going to make profit for the downtime
They just wanna get the switch right, and are offering something to appease at the side
Pointless thread, players who actually read have known about this since 2.0 was announced. In fact I'm pretty sure it's either in one of the LftP's, or one of the 2.0 PDF's that we got around the official announcement last year.
You're kinda being silly here. Its the reason they are having a poll. Do people want to keep xiv up so they can basically have a world wide chat room open to them, vs seeking out a place to talk to multiple round the world friends at once. Its kind of the point of the poll.
This thread had nothing to do with that. It was some one upset things would not be saved.
Well I didn't think it was silly to figure people would talk to their friends outside of a video game...so we're basically asking SE to waste time and resources to keep up a game that for all intents and purposes serves no other purpose than what email/IM/calling people also does if we vote yes?
I guarantee the LAST thing SE wants is to lose players for any reason. Having to shut down the servers is a big deal to them, but it obviously has to be done, and be done properly. They need our understanding and maturity, not our immature crybabies (those players can find the exit for all I care). I stuck with them this far, and I'm going to see this through till the end. I don't care if I can't login for 1-3 months because I have other games I can play. My impatience kills me, but that won't affect my judgement over them, because I know they are working harder than most developers right now in fixing this game. The OP seems to think the FFXIV devs are his slaves or something.
They are simply trying to do what they can to appease those that will miss playing the game for a month or two. They are cordially asking us, the community, whether we'd like to at least keep playing the game. That's awfully generous of them amidst all the change they are under. Stop crying OP and get a tissue, you're mommy is calling you for dinner.
I agree with this, there's absolutely zero reason why they should waist manpower ( even if its just 1 person to keep them up) to have a "online chat room" when you can do that with E-mail/Telephone/Instant Messaging/ etc. not only that it would only be up for not only a month probably because by December everyone should be in the beta that is an active member that is ( just assuming)
Would be neat if they gave us a Christmas(y) event and just logged the completion of the event for a reward in 2.0. I like holiday events XD - dont make me wait a year for snow :(.
Wanna talk with friends? Mumble or vent or some other voicechat program. Perhaps the OP didnt understand. The purpose of the poll was to find out if ppl wanted to play even after the big save and the Umbral finale? I voted no simply because if they do a finale and the servers are supposed to go down this to me seems like the perfect send off/ cliffhanger.
I dont want to log in after we get sent to wherever we are going and be like wait a minute im back in Eorzea? "But I thought Louisoix sent...." So to the OP yeah its a waste to play if progress is your goal. If you simply want to fish in a void more power to ya, however if the majority votes no then what? You gonna quit?
SE is doing right by me by even asking. I say however, let the finale be just that....THE FINALE.
People that have been trapped under that rock are finally starting to dig their way out.
Try stepping outside of your house and find another hobby in the meantime or use this time to catch up on some movies or TV shows that you've neglected due to playing too much FFXIV. If you don't want to leave the house, there are plenty of other online games that you can play temporarily to keep you occupied.
Do you even really have any clue what they have to do to migrate the character data? I am going to venture a guess and say NO.
To expect them to migrate your data -while it is still updating because you are still playing- is impossible. There has to be a stopping point for your data so they can port your data (everyone's data) over to 2.0.
Them trying to port your ever updating data because you wont stop playing is like downloading a game that continues to grow in size faster than you can download it.
Not going to happen; if you aren't happy about it: Too bad.
I think people are missing the point of all this.
Yes they may lose some people, but they won't lose me. I want to play the game, my kids want to play the game, my girlfriend tollerates the game and plays as a cure-bot. Mid-november through january, there's a lot off free time to play.
We want to play.
And "try stepping outside", that's what we do all summer. Winter is game time. It's cold, wet, rainy, snowy, and generally unpleasant. The gentle hum of the computer, with it's exhaust blowing against one's feet, with a warm cup of coffee or hot chocolate, while endlessly murdering tree slugs and fishing up crayfish, is something that is great for us. However there's an xi expansion coming in december, maybe we'll have to hit that up.
Still doesn't make it not week old news. It's displayed in the chat log as soon as you log in.

If you choose to ignore something like that, it's your bad.
I'll keep playing...practice is good...
AND SPEND THE TIME TO ROAM THE WORLD AND REMEMBER WHAT WAS. TAKE SCREENSHOTS. ENJOY!!!
Must you spread hate? If you don't want to play for the month that your data isn't saved then don't. This isn't even new news it's actually been EXPECTED SINCE THE ROAD MAP TO 2.0 was posted. Last year...
They have to hand convert each character account to the new database structure.
where are the post on what you will be playing while the servers are down.. those are more informative
I wouldn't play beyond November 11th, I would hate to actually accomplish something and it not be saved. I will be using the down time to hopefully play the alpha/beta and invest some time in other games like Call of Duty: BO2 and Assassin's Creed 3. cheers:D
8 pages. The trolling has succeeded. lol...
Why would the game being down for months so they can transfer character data and fully focus on 2.0 lose players? What exactly do you think they owe you?
It had just the opposite effect IMHO, I had no drive to play either of those games before that and after they brought it down I just felt hollow on the inside knowing even if I wanted to i could not play it. When it resumed i was back in full force on both games along with many others who did not log in for weeks/months prior to that downtime.
