The point of contention people had with the EW relics is they were a boring tomestone grind while you simply did roulettes and got one with zero effort. This step is literally that, but dressed up as something else. And then it becomes actually that anyway.

Crafting was required for the ARR and HSW relics too, and it was way more challenging to find someone able to do the crafts.

It is probably easy to farm a few FATEs and sell the bicolor gemstone item on the mb then use the gil to buy the dark matters. Just doing the daily roulettes will earn ~100k gil not counting the "in need" bonus. At the rate the material prices are falling, I am not sure how broke the hypothetical player who does not have the gil to buy them would need to be (less than 50k players at level 100 from what SilverTayunn said, I have no clue how this is possible but I remember someone begging others to teleport them around so...).

And if they do not want to do the roulettes, they will be stuck at the next step anyways.

How is anyone suppose to believe 8.0 is going to be any better when these uninspired, uncreative Devs keep pushing out phoned in, garbage content.

The crafting is the good part of this relic step, if you don't have crafters leveled, the Market Board is right there, or just get a friend to help you out, it's that simple.

Pigeonholing the entire process into roulettes is what sucks a lot though, there isn't even an alternative, it's roulettes or die.

Then go make money with battle content and buy it off Market Board, it's that simple, it's 100% feasible to have this step completed without as much as a single Crafter or Gatherer unlocked, which is the most important part in my eyes, you are very much given options, from personally handling things, to coorperation, to capitalism.

This is really the best compromise between the two camps… the grinders get their grindy step up front, and everyone else only has to suffer it once if they want additional weapons. I’m just glad it’s an actual grind with measurable progress and not an RNG nightmare.

You can't really grind that unless you want to help botters in roulettes. This is purely made to boost up login numbers, nothing else.

For those complaining about having to obtain the crafted items for this new relic step, I would say that the prices on the market board aren't bad at all if you're willing to do some server hopping. Even today, being day 1 of this new grind, I've seen them go for as low as 170k gil, and they may even go lower if you check at the right times.

That's cheap for a relic step! Besides, I thought gil was worthless in this game. I'm getting mixed messages here, lol.

Okay finally got a lunch break and was able to watch Meoni's video on it, and HONESTLY as someone who has been labeled a hater as of recently, I don't think this relic step is bad.....per say. You have to engage with content in multiple ways and it even makes you do something else or interact directly with others via crafting(unless im misunderstanding this part, im not sure if those things can on the market board or not). This is more align with an MMO style of gameplay and I personally want them to embrace that more.

What IS actually bad in my personal opinion, is the fact of what someone brought up earlier, in that the grind phase of the step is simply based off old content, and dailies none the less. I'm SO over running the same easy hallway content with a lackluster kit, and queue times that sometimes take longer than forming a party in FFXI, and with no payoff that feels good. My sub just ran out today, and this relic step is unfortunately not going to get me to resub. Idk why this wasn't part of the .3 launch (maybe trying to keep players subbed?). Also while im making a wish list, I wish they would have done more with the open world or made some changes to OC that made it worth going into for the relic without fate spamming that feels worse than open world fate spamming.

Just my thoughts, feel free to correct me if I got something specifically wrong. Just wanted what I felt like a middle ground take posted.

These are the best Relic Quests we've had since Heavensward. I'm not even mad that I haven't been OC yet because I'm just so happy to have a reason to run roulettes again, as well as reasons to USE GIL.

Roulettes have no purpose being the main content in a AAA MMO. The content doesn’t change. It isn’t dynamic. You are pressing the exact same buttons and clearing the exact same content you finished years ago with no variation. It is not fun. It is not worth $13 a month. It brings shame to the concept of a video game.

What the actual frick is that glow for SMN/SCH weapon? Just saw it on The Phookas yt video of it. Even HW relic for the book looks better -___- lol some shit glow at this second stage tf.

I have some feedback for this. I very much like the grindy step with the roulettes except because it's weighted I've seen people leave lower level stuff. In the future if the goal is to fill up roulettes then consider making it a flat number and then balance based on that. A shame that you didn't have something to do in occult crescent to keep that going and populating it a bit for new people. I liked having two options in the past with field content.

Step seems fine. Adds some value for crafters and this isn't the first time crafters could help you (like ARR).

I'm not particularly excited about the bicolor gemstone part unless that item goes down a lot on the marketboard, but if I want the reward I'll just have to suck it up.

Roulettes are whatever, at least gives me a reason to do them since I don't really bother after all my jobs got to 100.

I do agree that there should be light grind available in OC itself though.

Still underwhelming to me. Not having the atma RNG is an improvement, but now we don't get any OC steps for whatever reason. And considering how long it took them to update the relic, it's disappointing that the new step can be finished in just a few days of daily roulettes. It really feels like they just want people to sub for a month, and then have no PvE content to do for the other 3. I just hope DD/Quantum deliver.

No it's too early for them to buff the drop rate of step 1 as most ppl have finished like months ago and now doing step 2 which is just rous for now.

Also ppl who say I don't want to spend gil on mats OR level my DoH/L then they can just do the DT Ex5 for a weapon, tome wep, or even crafted. The relic has always been an optional upgrade there's been a few expansions I had skipped them since I dislike Eureka and Bozja and it was fine.

I have 2 views on this.

First, it's a pittance. Outside the flat 300k item from an npc, on aether at 11am this morning they were all barely over 100k each, and I am sure the prices will drop significantly in the next few days.

Second, however, is they make the required crafting/gathering stats way too high. They should have leveled them out to be gathered/crafted in scrip gear, high end crafting and gathering should def never have been a requirement.

You can hit the minimum requirements for it in scrip gear and black star jewellery. If you use a tisane and All i pibre you can even 100% macro it.

It's easy enough to gather the first few materials. It barely costs anything on the marketboard with how much people are making. The 300k gil item is barely a gil sink. Gil is pretty much worthless in this game unless you: own a house and are decorating it or are doing week 1 raiding and are paying someone for armor.

The roulette step afterwards is nice. I do wish there was an alternative method in OC especially with the upcoming phantom jobs but I still do my roulettes daily (albeit I don't do high level dungeons this gives me proper incentive to do them) so this works out fine for me. I don't need the weapon asap. It'll be something that completes itself in 10 or so days. Part of me almost wishes that the roulette step was required for each weapon but afiak it goes to the 1.5k tomestone after this, which is a nice for subsequent weapons.

I'm not sure what people expect. Devs can't seem to win. Either there is no grind or it's too grindy. The only bad thing is this step is missing inclusion with OC.

Roulette raids are easy and most of what you get is so old you can be carried easily as a worst case scenerio.

If you look back at the old relics that were so highly praised by those wanting a grind and hating the EW tomestone relics, what were those specific duties and bosses, etc.? The things that would have made up the roulettes back in the day, plus some fate grinding!

So you’re right in that it’s a tomestone grind (and fate grinding for the first step) dressed up as something else, but really, so were all the past ones. I’m just happy it’s not an “artificially extended for the unlucky by RNG” grind. I’ll do the daily 4 roulettes, and maybe do some of them more than once on days I feel like it, watching the numbers go up and seeing steady progress.

I sympathize with those who had wished there was an OC component to the relic… but with only two zones, where were they going to put it? The first step already used all the fates and CEs. Maybe if Forked Tower had actually had its originally planned but scrapped Normal mode, you could’ve done that repeatedly for bonus Aetherwell farming. But as it is, making FTB part of the relic would kill the relic altogether, and it seems like they realize that.

I thought relic weapons were supposed to be casual content? That's why the weapon will never be as good as a raiding weapon. All it takes is your time. It doesn't require you to do anything "hard" in the game because that would be absurd. Just time.

They may as well take these out of the game because nobody can win with any design that goes into these weapons. They've tried more grindy, they've tried to make it easy, and now they have tried the middle road, and there's still haters. You literally cannot please everybody, and this is one of those times where not everyone is going to agree, no matter how these are acquired.

Also, this IS an MMO. You are going to have to cooperate with other people at SOME point if you plan to make any kind of progress.

So what is it do you want them to do with these relics weapons if dungeons don't work, item grinds don't work, fate grinding doesn't work, having to get crafting mats doesn't work. At some point you're going to just have to accept it for what it is and move on from it.

Only the roulette is required, so you do not even need to have the current fights unlocked. You can smack A1N and A2N all the way if you only have those unlocked.
It is the same for the alliance raids, you can only do LotA and Syrcus (through the roulette, not direct queuing) and complete the aetherwell.

Don't worry about it, it's a roulette like any other, and people will help you out if you're rusty or lost. Just ask nicely and be open to receiving advice. Your roulette also won't queue you into anything you haven't unlocked and everything is normal mode only, so some muscle memory might come back to you if you used to run them often.


The more you run them, the more you'll remember and/or learn, you got this!

It would cost more than 300k gils if you are not crafting the synthetics from master recipes and buying them from the market board.

Giving an actual good reason for crafters/gatherers to actually use their skills and provide for people building relics is awesome. You don't have to make everything yourself, that's why we're in an MMO :D You grind gil, buy the item (or mats and talk to a crafter to make it). It's a win for combat oriented characters that have money to spare and crafters that have a goal to work towards.

Setting aside the rest of your post for for a moment i want to address why grinding tomes when you come back for more relic weapons is completely fine.

it's not boring, that's the best QoL change they ever made to relic farming. We get the sort of challenge for the relic grind that people crave, but repeats are streamlined through the use of tomestones, so people don't have to invest serious time into grinding for a second, third, forth, etc. relic weapon. I know of several people who consistently grind for EVERY relic in each expansion and i can only imagine that not needing to spend 3 million gil and weeks upon weeks of light farming on 20+ jobs is a godsend.

Because they simultaneously want something challenging, but only in the things they want. They asked for something harder and the devs delivered, so now they are complaining that it's not fair and it is too hard because they neglect crafting/gathering and how dare Squeenix try and make them do content. (that last bit was sarcastic).

The devs are damned if they do, damned if they don't. Nothing they do or add is ever good enough for some of these people and the ones who act the part of contrarians are often the loudest minority on the forum and on social media.
