rainbow parade.. lol
Yes to this idea so much! I remember in beta for an other MMO they actually had invented something a step up from classic MMO "Vanity Slots" in which you'd ripped various pieces of superior gear and installed it into other gear you preferred to wear. So no need to hoard two separate sets of armor. Instead of your "wearing" gear being an illusion, it held the actual stats of higher gear so you could cling to that one piece for as long as you wanted and continuously upgrade it.
Many players loved it and no one had any complaints about not being able to recognize other classes. But during beta the dev's took the system away and the community screamed bloody murder for it back.
Even just the basic "Vanity Slots" would be much appreciated. It helps give players more of a sense of identity and freedom without messing up game play. The good hugely outweighs the bad.I also agree that I don't really think not being able to recognize classes is an actual issue worthy of killing the whole idea. Pretty sure the guy with the sword and shield who insists on being all up the mobs face is the Paladin....
It's not really a matter of class recognition as it is aesthetic. XIV has a very 'grounded fantasy' style, something the art design team has worked very hard to create. Suggestions such as glowy equipment and bikini armor that a number of the users here like to make spit in the face of all that. It's important for the developers to keep their identity, and push the game in the direction they envision and maintain their style, even if they are taking suggestions from the community. Now, I'm okay with vanity slots if it's limited to what the class can already wear, but anything else would ruin the overall aesthetic.
Transmorgification you say?

(I think only a few people will actually get this, tragically. xD)
This was added to WoW not long ago and I don't mind good ideas coming from different games I just see this one kind of pointless for FFXIV. I think it is completely stupid to have something like this in this game especially at the point in time where no gear is a clear cut better than other gear unless it is really something new, and then it always looks better than anything we had before. This worked in WoW because after years upon years of gear sets some people just wanted their old favorite look back and it was in high enough demand.
This game hasn't even really launched yet I would much rather see new gear designs and all the works to come with 2.0 and next gen. content that comes with the game. Also as others have said .dat mods work miracles, I wouldn't mind this feature maybe in 5+ years but anything like this before that would be pointless.
Not The best example BUT DC UNIVERSE ONLINE, has a system where you equip clothes/looks/styles/costumes/colours for your char, Then your equip armor for your stats in a different part of the menu. It's good but does limit what you can wear vs what buffs you.
i liked it there ~ but the game no so much.
I think this discussion has gotten a little off track actually, and I am partially to blame. As for job identity, well my suggestion is that we can pick a piece of gear within our job that we want to use for appearance. I don't wish for anything more than that.
The vanity slots concept is a much easier solution.
You have my support too.
Also, I feel that calling it fashion slot or vanity slot are not helping this idea to gain track anyway. Because people are then saying "This is a MMORPG not a fashion show" or "this is not Barbie online".
We should start calling it Appearance tab, or appearance slot, or something, post your ideas. Fashion/vanity just carries negative connotation to it, and it carries a narcissistic flavor.
The problem I have is, Yoshida focuses real hard on making this a true Final Fantasy MMO, and vanity slots only helps push this. Everyone has that dream look of their character and like to show off their uniqueness. This is something I thought Yoshida supported. Bartz could use a sword and shield with his normal clothing, why can't we?
If you are scared it creates less incentive to collect new gear. It is understandable, but people still keep going after the new gear in RIFT and WoW, I have a feeling the same will apply here.
I think vanity slots are a better solution, and more feasible.
Vanity slots can also have restrictions so we don't have mages running around in full plate and paladins in skimpy robes.
That's not how the transmog system works. I'm pretty damn sure that if you have a plate chest piece that you can only choose a plate chest appearance. So basically a cloth wearer cant choose plate just because they like the way it looks. Same goes for weapons I believe.
As for doing every fight naked... no comment.
In all honesty I really don't care for this kind of system. Perhaps more freedom with customizing our armor's colour (similar to GW2's dye system) would be a good start.
That's right. Weapons are the big point right now because some people have asked for two-handed weapons be flagged withing the same category for transmog. That way if a current tier best weapon is a two-handed hammer but the player likes two-handed swords, they can transmog the two-handed hammer to a two-handed sword rather than endure a weapon type they dislike.
Of course, this issue is moot in XIV because our classes are locked into their respective weapon classes. Thus we wouldn't need to bend the rules already set when it comes to weapons.
That being said, what XIV currently lacks is the armor categories that games like WoW have that makes it easy to implement transmog. Gear in XIV is not labeled as plate/leather/cloth. That might be the only really big change needed to make it possible in this game.
Wouldnt be better making gear last longer and harder to get (no low drop rate, just hard Boss impossible to gauge fight), that imo made FF XI a good game you always could look forward getting something for months and after getting that it would be still very useful for a long time.
Trans..no..effing.thanks!
Some of you guys are tripping with the vanity slots. Yoshi-P already said no to vanity slots.
Should I dig through the forum and make 3 new threads about ideas the dev team has already shot down so you guys can pointlessly flail your support for them? Why don't we get real instead and come to the conclusion that vanity slots open up more problems than they solve, from having to reprogram the gear interface, making sure no bugs arise from equipping unforeseen gear to your character, all the way to the aesthetic problems that come with being able to equip anything in a blank slot when the game is not designed for that at all.
Too bad SE doesn't allow mods (I'd be so fashion design happy, EVERYONE on my server *except those I hate* would get something unique)
/equip <slot> "Cool but Crappy Gear"
Make macro. Press when in town.
/equip <slot> "repulsive yet awesome gear"
Make macro. Press when about to engage the enemy.
Well thats not a new feature really. This works in AION since its release.
And really.. i dont miss this feature anymore.
people are just wearing the appearance of random stuff.
And seriously when your cat wears a pink and tiny skirt and you have the stats of an epic overpowered "dragon drop equipment" ist just sucks to have a feature like that.. equipment does not feel more than just totally "random". its not an epic "dragon" armor.. its a pink dress with just the stats of it.
when Garuda Armor looks like an evening dress or something like it..
It just DOES NOT look like garuda equipment anymore.
each armor has somewhat of "identity", live with that or leave it. to change the appearance is just so "fake". my opinion after one year AION.
now got it? what it seems to be, is not what it is supposed to beQuote:
Person A: WOOT you are wearing a swim suit for the final boss fight against nael Darnus?
Person B: Oh well no, actually i am wearing Garuda chain armor, cant you see it?!
Whichever is easiest to implement I support. This feature isn't a deal breaker for me by any means but it would be nice to have. The only restrictions I think should be imposed is that Artifact and JSE (maybe CSE?) shouldn't be affected by this. Their original properties shouldn't be able to be altered.
OP updated.
Vanity sounds stupid. Fashion I'm okay with. Appearance is moving in a better direction.
That isn't a no. That's the type of response you give when you're undecided, haven't thought through how to make something work optimally, and/or trying to avoid doing something radical at a critical moment. It's still on the table.
If we do see it, I don't think it will be anytime soon.
When people are confused by something that's when you offer a better, simpler solution that fixes the problems they vocalize in their interview!
+1 for the obscure Calvin & Hobbes reference in the thread title!
Except, you'd still have to carry around that extra set of gear. You know full well that even if SE adds some kind of cosmetic gear option, they'll still make you carry the shiat with you.
/wrist
//If you want to not look like the gear you're wearing go play a F2P game and buy out their cash shop. I'd rather they make all the good gear cool looking instead of making stuff people would want to put something else on over.
All the talk about cosmetics lately makes me fear they'll put a cash shop in the game.
I wouldn't really use this feature but some people probably would like it. Its not that hard to implement either just add some npc in the game to change gear to look like other gear.
Most games that have it always seem to use the same basic rules, even in WoW they have the same rules, cloth can only be changed to look like cloth, leather to look like leather, mail to mail, plate to plate, ect
Hopefully we wont see it. as i said. Equipment and epic items have a kind of "identity" which is lost when it will work like in AION, where everybody changed their armors appearance to a standard appearance.
epic armor which is dropped by a dragon and looking then like a lv 30 standard armor? too bad i'd say
No one played AION??
It was a part of crafting.. you went to a NPC where you could combine 2 items and where you could chose from which item you want to keep the appearance and from which one you want to keep the stats.
and seriously? i dont miss it.. armors had nothing special anymore in the end. maybe.. just maybe i am ok with crafted stuff, but not with epic armor drops
I prefer the final fantasy way, what you have accomplished is how you will look like, if you get a good gear you will be able to show it, we have yukatas, christmas gear and several pieces that looks good, you can buy those and have your vanity way, once you get in a party you'll have to change to your crappy or bad ass gear...i dont wanna see a guy having a lvl 1 robe looking like darklight one, that takes away the achievement, you wanna look bad ass? well get bad ass gear then
That's not very Final Fantasy, as characters in FF games are designed around a certain aesthetic that is untouched by your equipment. If anything, us being able to choose a look and maintain it throughout our characters' lives would be closer to Final Fantasy than the "look like a mismatched clown" thing from FFXI.
