The biggest problem we had last time was trying to beat Cataclysm. 2.0 just needs to be good on its own merits and show the people that it has changed. It's a different audience from GW and WoW really.

I've seen comments like:
"This trash is still alive?" D:
"Looks interesting, I hope it's worth my time to log in again"
If 1.0 was competing with Cataclysm, then 1.0 was a high school choir ensemble facing off against an NFL team
I stopped over to Game Trailers and their reaction is a bit more composed. I'm fairly impressed with how collected the community was in comparison, actually. People are watching to see gameplay footage - both Yoshi's crew and we will have to do our best to deliver on that as best we can.
Yes, but right now MMOs in general are in the decline cause the market so so saturated with crappy MMOs, including this one (pre patch 1.19). People are hungry for a good new MMO. I'm not sure if we'll be a small market or #1 MMO, but i want this MMO to survive and be popular, i'm not sure the current base can sustain that.
anyways for me, i'm trying my hardest to convince people that this game is worth playing (even what we have currently is worth playing) without some real gameplay back up from SE, at least some new screenies.
From what I've seen of player responses on sites like Massively I really get the impression that people outside of the game really don't understand the significance of the changes that have happened already and the impact of 2.0.
A lot of the time when I see negative posts on XIV articles, my first thought is NCsoft employee.
1) It's pretty self explanitory
2) compared to the intricacy of other FF stories, FFXIV's story is on par with a children's coloring book.
I told my sister about 2.0 and she said, "I thought that was just a rumor?"
Even tho, SE has been putting messages in the inboxes of former players, most of the press releases and interviews were viewed by people who were already into the game and on websites like the lodestone forums. They were mostly in Japanese, and were directed to the current players. The rest of the gamers who quit FFXIV and moved on have NO clue what has been going on for a year.
This is supposed to be the beginning of the promotions directed at the people who aren't playing. The trailer is a tap on the shoulder, "Hey, remember this? Wanna check it out?". Some folks will decline the offer (Not interested), but others will be at least curious and go to the website.
Here's an unfortunatly rather negative reaction from GameTrailers:
http://www.gametrailers.com/side-mis...-latest-deceit
Though I have to agree that these CG-only trailers don't do much for me.
EDIT: Interestingly enough, there are actually many people defending the game in the comments.
Huh? What? You were talking about changes that happened already and what's coming in 2.0, so I assumed you were talking about stuff like patches and gameplay changes that are coming, to which I once again say: someone not following closely/playing the game will not really know and understand that stuff and its importance. Dunno why you're suddenly talking about plot.
Also intricacy and FF story doesn't really fit too much in one sentence (oh god I better ready my shield :P)
I wonder about the game footage.
If the battle system and animations have improved a lot then it might be possible to have footage that looks dynamic.
If the battle system has just been tweaked then no amount of editing can make it look ...epic.
I still think XIV release trailer was the best piece of pr for this game. It had in-game footage but most of all it had a FF feeling in it due to the music mash-up of answers and that other track.
I don't remember the melody of this trailer and the feeling is a bit more "Beowulf 2" (or any other Hollywood film) than Final Fantasy.
I'm goin off on a tangent here but getting melancholic mood in trailers has worked in past FF games so well I don't see why not bring up that theme again.
XII onwards it seems FF is all star wars explosions and J-pop rainbows. They used to take pride in being different in a quiet way.
Sure the same guy with a chocobo avatar posting 8 times :|
That is also an issue some fans tend to forget when posting trying to defend XIV. Everyone is well aware that there are a lot of blind fanboys that would defend anything that SE makes.
I am not saying that this is the case here, but if I was a non-XIV player and would read the comments from actual players who are claiming that the game is amazing blablabla, I wouldn't really give them any credits.
The average XIV player will tell you good things about "his" game, just like a WoW player would, a GW2 player would and so on. After all if you play and pay for something it means you like it, so you're expected to have a positive attitude toward that product.
I would rather trust new players (or player who came back after a long absence) who would post comments like "I just (re)started playing and it's not as bad as people says", rather than "I am a XIV guru, been there since day 1, done all events, got a relic, all jobs 50, etc. and XIV is a good game!"
I often see XIV players trying to defend the game on external sites by bashing others non-players or casual players with arguments such as "You have less experience than me so I know better". Yeah but having more experience also mean your feedback has a way higher chance of being biased.
You have to stop and realize that this is a video to catch the attention of people who have no idea about FFXIV, haven't heard anythig from XIV for a long time or have left and awaiting ver 2.0 release.
This teaser does just that, it brings the unknowing up to speed and lets people know FFXIV: a realm reborn is due soon.
Thats it.
SO the next teaser they put out might be more CGI mixed with game play (remember Yoshi said they are still working on the graphics) do you want the real deal of gameplay footage or some alpha state stuff?
They didn't release this and say "FFXIV: a realm reborn, available now for PS3 and PC"
They released it and said "FFXIV: a realm reborn, coming soon to PS3 and PC"
We'll see game play soon enough. This release was just to remind people ver 2.0 is on its way.
Wasn't there a bunch of people/media who saw the actual game at E3 saying saying they were impressed by 2.0? Feels like those comments are being ignored. This was a teaser trailer, if not fan service. I think their full on marketing push doesn't kick off till August.
As usual, your comments are funny yet only slightly interesting.. However:
citation needed on that last part, if you please.
I'm pretty sure that the devs mentioned the older screens, as well as the E3 screens both being on an old build of the game where abilities and things aren't completely sorted out, hence the presence of tiers in things like Cure, and nukes.
Where did they ever mention the UI in those screens is photoshopped again?
maybe we have to expect more in a near futur, but if they plan to sale game with this bad commercial...trust me its a fail.
I do love the game and hope to see more players coming. I dont want to see FFXIV going in the long list of bad MMO. The plan for SE is to sell copy of the game...but with a bad amateur commercial like they sure wont get many costumer.
My grand-ma could have done way better with Windows movie maker
Ironically, there's a lot of bad games out there with good trailers and some of the best games actually never get commercials or full on trailers because they tend to either be indie titles or fly under the rader of the company's larger IP.
I think the only thing that is going to pique people's interest is the big hitting games reviewers giving a hands on review and subsequently a high rating score at the end.
I can imagine a side by side comparison of 1.0 and 2.0 over multiple pages followed by the score they gave 1.0 back at launch and their new score for 2.0.
Hopefully something along the lines of:
"Our previous score for 1.0: 3.5, Our new score for 2.0: 9.5 (Must have game of the year!)"
Personally, after seeing the trailer I was really hyped for 2.0. While I agree showing a CG trailer first isn't the best marketing tactic, I hope that people will see it and think "oh, that looks pretty cool, maybe I should check this game out".
It was pretty obvious

http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/files/2..._Dragoon-1.png
notice any similarities?
Notice any differences?
tbh I don't think that's photoshopped but more like the dragoon and coeurl are the only things in action. CDs are in affect, and the first one is when the drg is preparing to dragonfire dive and the second is when he uses it but in a different angle. If you look at the differences between the first and the second, the changes actually make sense. They only seem to be like 1 second apart.
Why didn't the casting bars of Firaga and Cure move, then?
The trailer isn't like a movie trailer that shows clips from the movie. Its sort of a fake trailer that shows what the game would be like if it was on the PS5.
So, really, I don't see that the trailer gives anyone much of an idea about what the game is actually going to be like.
