Limited Cross Region DC Travel

I don't mind that Oceania is being put on the test, but let's be honest here: Can we just address the Cross-World feature first as well as the problematic connotations that come with it?

- Promotes gathering on ONE DC for all content, based on opinions and what has been said by the community.

- Discourages staying on your Home World for content.

- Disparages the economy as Aether gets most of the benefits of an active market even during downtime.

We need to fix this problem first before they introduce Cross-Region. It is a hill I am going to die on since it's apparent on all DCs regardless of Region.

Until we fix the 'Dynamis' Problem, it's going to stay until they fix it.

What does this even mean, there has to be some inherent limitations to complete cross region travel or the entire playerbase is just going to fight for limited spots on aether, if you are absolutely chomping at the bit to see friends who are on other data centres you can meet in materia, ripping down all the walls just means we end up with aether and 8 pressure valves for aether which dynamis shows already doesn’t work

Oh hey, it's this debate again. As usual, feels like people are just venting frustration over the results of player psychology making the worst of regional DC travel on the back of cross-region DC travel.

Even if we put the cart before the horse and assume this test means cross-region DC travel will be right around the corner in the wake of this test run (which I won't hold my breath for yet), there is nothing its expansion will do to the DCs that hasn't already been done by regional DC travel:
Primal, Dynamis and Crystal PFs won't be any more dead that they already are, cause they are already dead. Same with the EU DCs and I assume JP is stuck in the same situation.
Retainers and FCs won't be any less accessible on a different region's DC than they are on another DC in the same region.
The only thing at this point that'll mediate that problem until Square adresses those issues specifically will be the release of Dawntrail and the server congestion it'll likely bring, forcing a lot of people back to their native DCs for the first month or however long it lasts, ere we go back to the current state of affairs.

And how is economies normalising across regions a bad thing? It leads to higher prices for crafters on highly oversaturated markets as new buyers roll in, and allows people on highly undersupplied DCs to buy for cheap until eventually everything settles as close to an equilibrium as the players are willing to maintain by going to extra mile and checking other DCs for item prices. Besides, it will mostly happen to very expensive items where checking prices elsewhere and travelling will actually be worth the time and effort spent doing so.


Of course I hope we'll get Cross-DC PF functionality as soon as possible (region-locked to whichever region you make the PF in I assume, since latency will actually matter so a global PF would be problematic unless they add some new filters). I hate the state PF on my home DC of Primal is in right now and want it fixed as much as everyone else. But is that enough reason to miss out on a chance to be able to hop over and play the game with some of my RL friends on the EU DCs? Definitely not.
Considering unlocking this functionality comes at zero development cost and will not slow down the deployment of possible counter-measures to the current "Aether problem", I see no good reason why one should affect the other. Don't let "good" be the enemy of "decent".

That's such a completely unrealistic depiction of the current situation that it isn't even funny. People from a whole region can already go to Aether without limitations, but I certainly don't see this massive migration you speak of.

It's always funny when I see people from Aether telling this fairy tale that everyone goes to their DC. That's simply not real.

If you think Japanese and European players would somehow decide to give up the chance to play with their own people most of the time to invade Aether en masse, I see a massive delusion here.

Yea people don’t permanently move to aether they just travel there to do most of their daily duties, an average DF run on aether will have more travellers than native aether citizens, I’m sitting in a eureka instance right now and 3/4 of the people in it aren’t from aether, our PF’s are full of people from the other data centres

There is an enormous influx of people who regularly visit aether, just because they don’t fully world transfer doesn’t mean they aren’t still coming to aether for most things, I’m certainly not seeing crystal DF drowning in people from jenova

I think you are somewhat overestimating how this would scale to Cross-Region DC travel. The problem with regional DC travel is that all those DCs are in the same location, so you will not see a change in latency travelling from one to another. The "only" tradeoffs you have are inventory/retainers, FC features, linkshells, etc.. Sadly, enough people think those are outweighed by a larger player pool and in case of Dynamis shorter queue times. All this adds up to the complaints of those who wish for a Cross-DC PF.

Meanwhile, the difference in ping when transferring between regions is quite significant. And considering how awful XIV is at mitigating latency (in fact making latency worse by the inane way in which it handles animation lock), that'll be a barrier that will keep quite a few people away. Some jobs become borderline unplayable at high latency, and at 200+ ms even snapshots start feeling unreliable. Which is why I believe the problem won't get worse with Cross-Region DC travel when compared to regional DC travel, though sadly I can not prove it.
Pandora's box is already open. Might as well let hope out of it as well, by at least giving those who want to visit and play with friends in other regions the chance.

Not really because we have no guarantee that travel to the JP worlds from NA or EU will be allowed at some point in the future.

For all we know, SE is only responding to player feedback pushing for something to be done to help Materia, which is OCE not JP. That data center has struggled since it was set up because the player population is so low and a lot of players that wanted it ended up transferring back to NA or EU. What happens with the economy there is a trivial concern compared to trying to improve the general game experience.

To be honest, I tend to agree that it's far more than economic concerns holding things back. SE could have set things up so players couldn't purchase items on other worlds if they really wanted to. If that was all that was holding things back, we would have had cross region travel by now.

I think the fear is the cultural differences disrupting things on the JP worlds if too many random NA and EU players went there. Their beliefs about what is socially acceptable behavior vary quite a bit from ours. JP players have been very resistant to cross region travel where most NA and EU players are fine with the idea.

I'd be fine if JP wants to remain isolated and left out of cross region travel. Let the rest of us play together.

Players from all over the world including Japan have played together on FFXI and FFXIV 1.0 without the sky falling.

As someone who spends in Japan a quarter of the year for work, I'm fairly confident no sky would fall even in FFXIV 7.0.

I'm happy for you that you haven't ran into the very vocal communities of the game that want nothing to do with NA players, for example. Even on this forum I've seen several threads of people from the EU side of things saying that they'd kick people from groups if it became apparent from they were from NA (because apparently were all "self-obsessed Trump lovers who cant take criticism").

I've also personally been called a "stupid American" on the OCE servers on Day 1 of them opening up. Myself and others were curious to experience another region so we made alts, bought skips and joined up for an alliance raid as our own party. Our tank got aggro and proceeded to handle the boss the way he normally would (i.e. how a tank should handle bosses on the NA side of things). This infuriated several people who didn't want to do NA strats and resulted in basically flat out bullying towards anyone who was from NA (and no, before you accuse us of retaliating, we didn't. Tank even tried to apologize and explain how we literally didn't know but still got insulted for that lol). Probably the worst experience I've ever had in this game outside of my stalking incident.

It's also no secret that OCE was even created because JP didn't want to play with anyone who wasn't from JP and wanted to try to get the English speakers (OCE) out.

And let's not forget the recent postings of the JP member who is literally going around telling people to kill themselves for not greeting them properly.

I'm sure not everyone shares these viewpoints but I'm also not trying to put myself into toxic situations with people who don't want anything to do with me just because of where I live or will tell me to die if I don't study how to properly greet them prior to encountering them in a dungeon. At the very least they should improve their reporting system at the same time as this so issues that do arise can be handled quickly and efficiently compared to how they are now.

I'm sure there are some who are toxic and this forum is certainly not the litmus test for the community. I play on all Data Centers have had a character on Japan for years and never had a problem. I play on Light and Chaos too and all the NA DC's and have never had any major problems.

The issue though will there be groups who want to troll especially in Japan. Hard to say but our cultures are certainly different. I would imagine the Raid community would be the hardest hit with DC travel and although I'm not a raider I've read that methods used in Japan are different than elsewhere. Given the raiding popularity in Japan it would be a major reason for people to DC travel there in my opinion.

After all is said and done something needs to be done with Materia. The current situation is terrible. These people pay subs like everyone else and running content there is abysmal. Many have left so the situation is getting worse instead of improving and I personally don't hold much hope for it changing with 7.0

I think you're severely overestimating the amount of people that would want to go to Aether that aren't already on NA. This isn't just hopping from one DC to another that are physically in the same location IRL so there's zero ping difference, region travel has many more negatives to someone that isn't already on NA.

EU already has its "raiding center". Very few EU players are gonna be doubling/tripling their ping just to raid somewhere else when Light is already bustling with activity. I've played with multiple EU friends who have raided over here on NA with alts/transferred to be over here with friends and they've all had plenty of complaints regarding ping here, to the point VPN & plugins are basically mandatory to make it playable in high end content.

Same with JP. They certainly aren't going to be leaving their own DCs for raiding, considering the non-zero amount of JP players who have the "JP only" mindset. In fact if anything, NA people would be more tempted to get off aether and go to JP due to the neverending comments about how mythical, amazing and organized JP PF/DF is at clearing content compared to other regions.

The congregating of a single DC within each region happened because there's zero trade offs to not go there and only benefits. With region travel there will be much harsher negatives.
However, I do agree much consideration needs to be put into place before they just throw open the floodgates haphazardly, but for reasons completely unrelated to raiding, since ping issues effectively neutralizes that as a concern.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention timezone differences into the mix, where Aether's primetime raiding time is like, 1-2am for most of Europe. And in the dead of morning for anyone in the SEA region, further disincentivizing travelling to aether and just staying on your own "big" DC in your region since your own region will be far more populated at your usual primetime.

Dear SE,

I just wanted to add a positive plus for the idea of permanent cross DC travel.

If you have communities that are expressing xenophobia and racism, please feel free to keep them isolated in that. But the Cloud Beta was really fun and was such a great time that I've decided to expand to OCE and play with them more. Your recent announcement for Dawntrail was so exciting because I was able to make friends there and having the ability to visit from Aether NA would be great.

Please don't take just the feedback from one community (JP) as the only feedback that matters for this entire game. Let NA/EU and OCE continue to play together at a minimum!

Seeing people acting like the world will implode if the JP EU and NA communities interact is hilarious. The JP players thats cause issues are too cliquish to really do any harm, and EU is heavily devided by language. These groups will avoid you quicker then you'd have to interact with them, and the worst they'll do is kick you from the party is they're feeling petty. But thats also just life, you deal with toxic and picky people. It's gonna happen here to.

There's an enormous number of NA players who don't go to Aether as well.

Aether is not the entire world, as busy as it is. Non-English speaking players have no reason to go to Aether when they can remain in their home regions, play with others that speak their language and experience better ping.

Why would anyone from Jenova be going to Crystal for DF unless they wanted to play with friends on Crystal? Know where I take my Dynamis friends when they want to do an Alliance Raid or a level 90 MSQ trial? Crystal. Even when my friends on Crystal aren't available to help out, the 5 minute queue wait for the party/Alliance to fill doesn't bother us.

Seems like all this "Aether is the place to go talk" has resulted in some bloated heads thinking that everyone is on Aether or wants to be on Aether when that is decidedly not the case. It might be the better place to go to find a party for Savage but that's the extent of it. Savage is not the entire game.

Perception gets assumed to be reality and that's what the developers have to tread lightly around.

I see PFs up frequently for content on Dynamis and Coeurl.

Is the number of PFs listed as large as Aether's list? No. But the listings are there.

Your problem is assuming that the entire game is played through PF. The majority of players are queueing directly through DF for random party matching or they're in party with friends.

The game does not revolve around Savage and EX trials.

Sure savage isn’t the endgame to everyone but DC travel hollowing out non aether/light/mana savage parties is a problem, this problem may get worse later on, people also said “nah nobody is going to leave Crystal because our PF is good enough” and surprise surprise crystals savage is dead, there is more restrictions on actual ping travel but between no clippy/alexander and how stale savage raids are it’s not that big of a deal, people will travel for the bigger PF listing options, I seriously wouldn’t be surprised if aether steals a massive amount of light’s PF listings

And as usual people on the forums can’t help but see in black and white, sure a lot of people DONT travel, but the fact that any duty you get on aether has at least half non aether people shows that a lot of people DO travel, dynamis is already aether’s second half (despite you making your life harder for yourself by bringing friends to Crystal instead) and aether is already full as it is, people likely won’t travel to other regions for casual content (except maybe people from materia) but between casual content in NA being don’t on aether and savage coming from abroad it’s going to be a problem

The stance is post farming

Its good news for some. But I'm not really interested in other regions. My main is on Aether; my primary alt is on Dynamis; then I have 1 backup on Crystal & 1 on Primal.

Meanwhile, cross-region travel as a functionality was already included in the overall development for Data Center Travel. All they're doing with this test is enabling this functionality, with a limit on what physical data center can be traveled to.

They're a contrarian a lot of the time. I made a post in a Thread about why PF players are bad and turned me saying Savage needs more prestige into why MSQ doesn't need it. Their entire stance is pro casual focused and they basically make any discussion about XIV changing, which will include the needed changes for savage, as a black and white view of why the game shouldn't change and how making the game more MMO like is a bad thing.

No retainers, no timed nodes, no FC chat, no FC buffs, no cross-DC tells, no island, etc etc etc. I'm sure you mean "without limitations" as in the travel itself, but let's acknowledge that if you're the one traveling to Aether, you're forced to give up a shit ton of things just for a functional PF. And before it gets thrown out there as a half-assed counter-argument: whether or not you, personally, find those things negligible to your experience doesn't mean everyone else feels the same. Heck, even the people who cite "being able to play with friends" as the entire net positive to overcome those limitations, what about the people whose friends are already co-located? If they have different interests, so one has to go to Aether anyways because they're into raiding, doesn't that mean travel is now hindering you interacting freely with your friends? When we talk potential culture clash, this is the one that immediately comes to mind for me because it's exactly what we saw with Aether. Aether had the reputation of being "the raiding DC" and so NA raiders rushed on over. JP has this dreamy reputation about being super organized and highly skilled and genius with their strats. A certain demographic of NA raiders will absolutely run over there to try and participate in what they believe is a raiding utopia and it's undoubtedly going to cause problems. It's foolish and naïve to think it won't.

Yeah, it's one thing that the High-end Duty listings have all but vanished from Crystal PF, but there's actually way less regular content happening in PF as well post-travel. And that makes sense, because there's plenty of overlap between "raiders" and "players who enjoy combat content". If you're already on Aether for one thing, why would you go all the way home to try and see if you can get a PF together for another thing (especially given how tedious the transfer process is)? Travel hasn't only affected raiding in PF.

It's interesting that you mention the desire for bigger PF listing options -- or more accurately it's interesting that more people aren't acknowledging that -- because that's literally how cities work. Densely populated urban areas whose most attractive feature for drawing people in is having lots of options all conveniently located. This is a video game example of how urban, suburban, and rural areas developed, much in the same way the WoW virtual pandemic ended up mirroring the actual approach to how a pandemic would develop and be handled IRL. Aether is the urban center, and Crystal/Primal/Dynamis are the suburbs people commute in from each day. The setting may be virtual, but the people are real, and most people behave remarkably similar across different environments.

Nah, NA has a huge amount of EU players and the inverse is true for EU with NA players. And JP has a very large English speaking community with a lot of people from NA. All the possibility of Cross region raiding will do is allow people who don't wanna leave their friends and personal comforts to do it now.

Certainly possible, maybe even likely, but I've crossed paths with quite a few people who schedule their raiding around the timezones of other people so I guess we'll see how it plays out.

Timezone shift goes out window once a mega server is created, once a sizable population congregates on a server the population becomes so dense that it becomes active during all timezones and you get a Tranquility-lite server effect.
SE is gonna need to implement measures that dissuade people from flocking into one datacenter, high ping is also not a deterrent in this game, it's perfectly playable with high ping

I know people speculate on what might happen with this, and I have my own worries as well with the cross region travel, but I think the main thing that people should think about (or at least, I think about) is that we don't actually know what is going to happen once this becomes implemented, or if it becomes implemented, so that's what the test is for. We can assume things might end up like how they did with world travel, but from my experience from playing on both EU and NA, I feel like people most likely will not end up hoarding to other servers for raiding and such because each one has their own ways of raiding and their own strats/skills that differ between data center. Like I know people always said that Aether is the raiding server, but from my experience I always kind of found raiding on EU to be a bit more pleasant (no offense, just my experience lol) so it just depends on how you look at it. Literally the only reason why I am excited for this is so I can see my friends again on EU easier than with an alt.

Really I thought JP people hated English-speaking people on their server so much that they basically complain until oceanic was made to push everybody off their servers

I just wanna be able to play with my NA based friends without having to make an alt and run it through the MSQ. Please, SE.

Thats a very specific JP server amongst them all.

I think this will really mess with the market boards if they have access to it , and if they do have access SE should at least link all market boards in all areas to stabilize prices something they should do anyways so material is always available imho.

Hmmm, the marketboards in Materia are deader than a doornail so there isn't really anything to mess up, although one could make a case for a 2 account JP <-> OCE <-> EU <-> OCE <-> NA trade happening to move goods from Light to Aether, or Balmung to Tonberry. But all they need to do to counter that is to stop trade. At that point, doesn't matter - without trade data centre isolation is maintained.

it's not that they hate english players per se, it's more like they get frustrated when said english player doesnt read a guide before getting into content, fails mechanics and then can't communicate due to language barrier. if you can read/write nihongo and converse with them without a machine translator (deepl/google) they are more than fine playing with you regardless of where you are from. if you (the english speaking player) gets into content prepared, play well and clear content you wont hear a word from the jp players at all besides yoroshiku and otsukaresama
