FFXIV did not win any awards at the 2023 Video Game Awards

In truth, I never pay attention to awards. It's always a popularity contest and seldom reflects the true quality of the game.

For example, BG3 won an award and it was clearly rushed to release with bugs all over the place. It's so broken I've experienced game crashes when creating a character right after the first cut scene. Meanwhile, No Man's Sky has been steadily improving their game, with no additional cost, every patch since 2016.

Winners are chosen by jury. Some games who win are most certainly not the popular games that get the most player votes. Not that I expected FFXIV to win on-going game when pitted against Fortnite and Genshin. Especially since it's been a contentious expac.
Also Cyberpunk shouldn't even have been in the category to begin with. Hotfixes and ONE DLC, no matter how good, do not make an 'on-going' game. Else nearly every game would qualify for 'on-going'. There was a couple of games that had no reason to be in the category they were in.

That being said: BG3! It really deserves it and so does Neil Newbon. I'm glad that was the one of the few nominations that a lot of people agreed with.

Like NMS, BG3 is still improving, it received 13 hotfixes and 5 patchs since its launch, which is pretty good. With no additional cost too. The game is still buggy though, but I wouldn't call it broken. I'm sorry you did not have a great experience with it, but it seems to vary from players
I don't think taking this game as an example to say TGA's choice of games are only popular, often mediocre ones, is very honest. It's still a pretty great game, despite its bugs

Tune in next year when the game is out of the content drought and has a new expansion.

Why would FFXIV win a "Best Community Support" award when the devs don't really engage with the community anymore?

They even got rid of stuff like the player QA from fanfest this time to distance themselves from even the slightest bit of feedback or questions players might have.

But I probably had more fun playing Warlords of Draenor from 2014 to 2016, and I wasn't even raiding in WoW at that time. That's a pretty dire statement about how engaging I found Endwalker.

Endwalker was a step back. Even ffxiv players didnt vote for it to be best ongoing game because of how bad EW was. As for best community, there are other communities that are much better and the devs are more communicative with the players. I agree with the results

I am being honest. Why should someone say a game as buggy as BG3 deserves its award? Their victory clearly shows how much money and publicity sways the jury. It's a great example of why no one should take the TGA awards seriously. It's like the Grammy Awards of games.

nah CP2077 a SP game won out against co-ops/mmo because the truth is not mo matter how bad of launch that CP2077 had, CDPR listened and responded to the community and kept everyone with updates regularly and their most recent update was 33 GB which added even more things. Thats why they won. The devs in this game or the other games in the category really don't interact with the community at large and this is beyond FFXIV live letters and such or adding more and more items to the cash shop vs what we get in game. Devs really need to take note just from FFXIV but other co-op/mmos

FFXIV honestly had no right even being nominated for either award imo.

What we have now isn't bad, but its pretty bare-minimum, nothing extraordinary about the community support or as an ongoing game. There are plenty of other games out there doing both of these far better than FFXIV.

Probably up to random chance. Not saying they didn't encounter a lot of bugs, since the experience can often vary wildly on PC. I've played over 100 hours and had maybe 1 crash.

The only real problems I had were in the third act, the city just didn't load properly once or twice. Fixed with a reload so no big deal though.

Like said before, it seems to vary from players. From my experience, I didn't find BG3 that buggy, but it still does have some, majority of them were harmless.
The game is not unplayable, maybe by being very unlucky. But even I, who runs this game on a HDD, while being under the recommended requirements, experienced very few crashes
I'm currently at my sixth run, so I did play the game, I'm not 'defending' it blindly. I did not played every games that were nominated, so I can not say if BG3 deserved its award or not. I respect your opinion about it though, but to say it should not deserves an award because of its bugs is a pity, the game is much more than that

In regards to PC games bug issues will vary by person far more than on a console due to hardware differences. Take Cyberpunk 2077 and Fallout 76 when they launched. I experienced hardly any glitches or bugs on either title at launch. Cyberpunk was an issue with a glitched door to a side gig and a couple instances of falling through the map, Fallout 76 was a single bugged quest and a few weird ragdoll instances with corpses of things I killed.

Because there was no actual new FFXIV expansion released this year? I assume it's not eligible for all the big awards without that factor.

Also because other games exist and only one can win the prize. Someone has to be crowned "best" even if all of them were hypothetically excellent.

Because the categories were Best Community Support and Best Ongoing Game.

Best Community SUPPORT I wouldn't say they should win because basically all they do is live letters and some random contests now and then. They don't interact with the community at all otherwise and when is the last time anyone has seen a community manager or anyone official post on here?

And best ongoing game is funny when they are taking longer and longer between patches with less stuff IN each patch.

Well they do manage social media such as twitter, instagram and youtube as well as the lodestone, its database of information and its blog, and respond to support desk inquiries and technical support posts. Whether that counts I don't know.

Responsiveness depends on responding to what, but response in the support desk is good. Social media activity is good. As much as people may not like to hear it on this forum, major patches/DLC every 4 months and sub-patches even more frequently than that is actually really good compared to some games.

Do you play WoW by chance? As in, do you have an active sub and play it regularly and interact with the community on the forums? Because I do. In fact, I didn't even play FFXIV this past weekend. I spent my entire gaming time in WoW this weekend and I'm on their forums all the time.

Their forums are cluttered with "The devs don't care," and "The player council was a sham," and "We're just being ignored," posts. To think WoW's communication is the best in the industry is literally laugh out loud funny. And no one would laugh harder than WoW players.

Both the FFXIV and the WoW forums are in interesting study in human behavior. Both communities absolutely despise their own games and actively praise the other game. If you want FFXIV love, go to the WoW forums where this game can do no wrong. And if you want WoW praise, this is the place!

Call me debby downer, but I'm actually very happy that FFXIV didnt win anything in the awards. Despite the awards really not meaning anything besides technically GOTY and everything is just a popularity circle jerk validation for sweaty nerds wanting to rub and flex on other sweaty nerds over their "game".

Anything to not give this community an inch of praise or validation on both the players and the developers. I rather care on focusing on the devs hopefully start listening to player feedback and strive to make the game better and for the community to stop acting like complete dunderheads and quit with the myriad of toxicity and drama.

Eh and yes lol. Eh to the fact that I still believe the award is going beyond just fixing what was wrong, and not making it wrong so you could then fix it and be told good job. Shouldn't be like that in the first place and we shouldn't have awards for knowingly messing up. Like if you had done it right in the first place you wouldn't have been eligible for the award cause you'd be done. Then also the other games mentioned I believe fixed what was wrong, but due to time being out, have continued to work on it- making them more interesting for the award than CP2077.

That said I do believe it's a pretty good game now and in that way, yeah there is a win in the story. And while I don't have the same faith I had before the release I do at least feel a redemption and will more cautiously but excitedly await their next game.

Worst game company in the world? No. Definitely not. Game good now? Yeah I would definitely say so, worth getting if you haven't already. Best continuing game? I wouldn't say that... If they continue to update it now that they fixed it? Yeah sure, but they need more time to develop the track record now that they have only recently passed where it should have been at release.

Releasing more patches (where they make sense, perhaps final touches on ideas lost to the rush to release the game) and another great dlc like phantom liberty would be a top contender. For context I wouldn't have given such an award to ARR at release either. That was fixing their own mistakes. Though I think both stories are good they didn't abandon their work, and give the redemption arc.

What even is an "ongoing" game? It seems to be the place where they lump MMOs, live service games, or games that actively get updates and new content on a regular basis -- that is, "ongoing" rather than arriving at a "concluded" state. Does that really describe Cyberpunk? Why? Because the problems with the initial release got patched, and they made a DLC chapter? Like, FFXVI just released DLC, is that an "ongoing" game now? Was Baldur's Gate 3 "ongoing" all that time it was in Early Access and getting periodically updated? Seems like if there is ever a patch or a change of some kind, you can call anything "ongoing."

Seems like a category that needs to be defined better. Or maybe they didn't want to literally have a "Best MMO" category because realistically there are never too many of those at any given time so it would just be the same contenders year after year..?

Ongoing game is literally just "game people still play after its lifespan of a year". MMOs dont have a category because its literally not a popular category with many games in it. Its like having an RTS award category to see which version of Total War wins.

Total war is RTT, not RTS. It's kind of why the award is for the best strategy these days so it covers RTS, RTT, Grand Strategy, 4X, Wargames etc.

not even asking for much just cycle a moogle tomestone event or maybe go nuts with unreals and actually idk cycle that stuff monthly instead of waiting for le specific patch date. imagine, knowing you're about to put your players through like... a 6 month content drought, and instead of implementing new measures to make the game palatable during that time like removing lockouts or doing away with caps or accelerating the rate of events, etc. you just do nothing. and then when people quit you're like "uhm ackshually it's a good thing that your fc's dead and your queues take longer to pop xd we're just respecting your time haha lmao." and then you release some ugly 20 dollar sweater in the cash shop and make the surprised pikachu face when you don't win any awards.

NAHHHH this game didn't deserve anything this time around. post-ew has been terrible.

Its basically a category for any game that either has a resurgence or is an on-going multiplayer game. It literally could be an MMO vs a Shooter vs a MOBA vs a single player game that just got fixed up to be usable vs a sports game.
