I appreciate how smoother they look but if Auri limbal rings are no longer going to maintain their "glow" I would much rather the customization option be reallocated to something like horn/scale type because as subtle as they look right now in the rework the option will be about as meaningful as the bust slider on Lalafell.
(Or alternatively, make it an option for people to choose how "glowy" they want the limbal rings to be.)
I play Au Ra too and I definitely prefer the new eyes, they look much more natural and the way they must have been from the beginning.
Hopefully DAWNTRAIL will come with a free Fantasia because I'll have to update my Au Ra characters, I avoided the LED rings before but seeing the new look I absolutely want them.
I liked the shiny horns and scales from the previous update, too bad players had to complain and Mr. Yoshida decided to discard the idea, in this case it would be great to have both options, one for those who prefer the glossy look and one for those who prefer a matte appearance.
Could you point out which users are saying this without being obvious.
Cause no one is saying that the upgrades are bad, but unhappy with the effect seemingly being removed of the various glows of Au Ra Limbal Rings.
Unless you mean that folk are intentionally trying to view players who like the Limbal Rings glow as not wanting a update, then they have been wrong all this time.
They even try to dismiss the Roe case of it as well.
I agree with you about Dunesfolk eyes and I couldn't find a thread about the Lalafell changes. I hope they realize that the current Lalafell changes would remove the unique traits that made Dunesfolk distinct from Plainsfolk, because with the changes they look the same at a glance. Dunesfolk were immediately clockable from their bright mostly single colored irises before and by adding more darker shading to it they have eliminated the ethereal glow they had.
I LOVE yhe change. Soooo much prettier!!!! The au ra no longer looks dead inside Yay.
Also, i think the toned down limbal ring is a good choice. I feel like the current limbal rings look horrible unless they are in very similar color to the eyecolor, atleast in cutscenes. I tried very different colors once, and i almost vomited when i saw a close up cutscene, its such a clear ugly line i hate it. I think this is what they are trying to fix, to make the line more natural and blend more into the eyecolor. Im sure the glow will still be great, (i love glowing eyes) just a bit toned down. Im not worried about it. Im even more excited about the graphic update now then i was before :D i dont get all the complaints.
i think one of the reasons why this is bothering me so much is that they have said they are trying to keep our characters looking the same overall, just better, which the limbal change appears to be running in conflict with, because while it won't be every Au Ra player, there will be a large amount who chose the limbal stuff because we liked that it made the eyes glow with the contrast, and that removing that is a significant change that is going against what they have said the spirit of the graphics update is supposed to be
Nothing abouts 7.0 wows Mao rights now. Au Ra changes seem so awkwards. Mao startings to wonder just how much resources actually being spent on FFXIV.
As an Au Ra player I can tell you, they absolutely glow and the difference is noticeable. It really just depends on the contrasts and color scheme you went with your eyes that you notice this change or not. I have a red base eye color with a bright pink limbal ring. When they glow they really glow and turn my character's eyes from that red color to that pink as if her eyes completely changed color during the night time. Regardless, they do glow, it just depends on the time of day in Eorzean Time.
and to be fair to those that do like the old eyes. It shouldn't be a case where they should be forced to adjust. The update was slated to not heavily affect the look of characters so people don't need to feel the need to change their looks, yet it potentially seems like that is the case for Au Ras that did like the old look of Limbals/the lack of a glow. I made my character to build around the limbal rings to make them work to great effect I really enjoy. I don't want to go 12 dollars deeper into the new expansion just to fix the look of my character when it was noted there shouldn't have to be a need in the first place.
Just offer sliders and more customization to the limbal rings so everyone's happy, from offering more light/to allowing them to glow or not.
We'll keep your characters looking the same, except when we don't :)
Limbal ring aside ( which literally are made differently than anything else, so they are meant to be bright/glow ), why are the pupils twice the size?

Drugs are bad, SE.
Ultimately I think everyone's going to have to accept that there will be some changes as it's almost impossible do a big update/upgrade like this without any changes at all, but me thinking all the changes look good isn't meant to take away from others not feeling the same way and if people don't like what they're seeing they should absolutely voice their concerns and I'm not arguing against that. :)
I do wonder how realistic it is to hope for toggles or sliders though, the limbal rings occupy the same slots as tattoos do for other races and other than finally adding a much-needed hairstyle section for Hrothgar they unfortunately never seem to add any new options to the actual character creator.
It certainly doesn't hurt to ask though, judging by the shiny horn section during the keynote they're very open to feedback so at worst they'll say this is what they want it to look like and they won't reverse it, and at best they can and will still tweak it to try and make both sides happy.
Figured I'd post screenshot as well, now that I'm back to PC.

Sure it's jagged, you can clearly see that it's not round. But it'd be quite easy fix, without having to absolutely change how it looks.
That would be okay, if that was noted of such things occurring. But they literally said in the last fan fest that they approached things to avoid this same exact thing from happening. The limbal rings creates a big change to the look of Au Ra characters eyes and there is a clear division. I am happy the eyes look better, but I dislike the limbal rings looking dull or not having a glow to them to give the effect I wished for my character when I made her.
So again, there shouldn't be a need to adjust, when the devs assured there shouldn't need to be one. Everything else looks fine, the only thing that has drastically changed is the limbal rings which needs reasonable adjustments to accommodate everyone who liked certain styles of it. Not alienate them/ruinning the desired looks for their characters.
A simple toggle of allowing them to glow or not would be fine and I think easy to do. Otherwise, I would say this would warrant a free fantasia since the limbal rings are a distinct feature that can affect the look of a character for people, either from a positive/negative standpoint. I built my character with the limbal's glow in mind, so these changes heavily affect what I was going for with my character.
Saame, eyes are a big improvement, with the upgrade looks amazing, also depends of the environment light, brighter the area, brighter the eyes (As always had to be) now no matter how bright or dark is your environment, eyes looks the same, for me is a huge improvement, eyes have shadows, is normal
I disagree that the feedback should be ignored. People liked their looks and don't wish for that to change. So providing options so they can retain their looks is not a tough thing to ask. Not reverting the changes, but allowing more options for those limbal rings so people can have their preferred look for them.
I also completely disagree with your assessment and I hope they ignore your garbage opinion because there's no reason they couldn't keep the more natural look while also giving us the option of glow. What you suggest is they get rid of the glow entirely, alienating those that actually like the glow.
To be clear the bit I quoted was discussing the eyes in general across all races and that is was what I was referring to.
I do think the new version of the limbal rings look better, but I don't actually care which one they go with because Au Ra is my least liked race by a mile. I defer to whatever the consensus is among their players.
My response contained nothing about the rings. Take your meds.
I know you deleted your post but I still wanted to address this: it's in the Technical Art panel that they started talking about wanting the visuals to be more realistic, by using techniques such as Subsurface Scattering for example. That's not my or anyone else's personal opinion, that's quite literally what they said they wanted to achieve, and my point is that it clashes with previously established aesthetics.Quote:

I was unsure cause when you said shine, others also labeled the rings as becoming braindead as well so I thought shine meant the glow of the rings. I like the shape of the new rings and the eyes overall. But it ain't the same eyes I picked when I made my character, their characteristic glow make my character's eye pop more and I really dig them. It literally goes against the idea of preserving the overall look of my character which the devs are carefully trying to do. More options is overall better, and hopefully a free fantasia if the changes are gonna be drastic like this.
Throwing my two cents in here - I love the glowy limbal rings and really don't want them gone!
I would be fine if we had the option of picking either (like others have suggested) but the glow/sharpness is something I LOVED when I first created my Au Ra.
You can't look at the picture below and tell me that the glowy red ring isn't a very noticeable part of her look. Please don't take her charm point away! :(

I'm a huge fan of the glowy, sharp, stark limbal rings as well and they're very important to my character's look and lore. I would strongly prefer that a very unique identifier like that is not taken away--at the very least I would hope we are given a toggle as to which kind we prefer, as like others have said I feel like the "upgrade" is a drastic change compared to how they look right now. Here are some examples of my character's eyes in a daytime and a nighttime setting:

You can see how the strong contrast goes into making her eyes stand out. In comparison, I have to say my heart sunk when I saw the before/after WIPs presented to us. When I look at how this m!Au Ra's limbal rings practically disappear in the "After" comparison, all I can think is that I very much don't want that for my Au Ra!

I very much hope that we can keep the glowy sharpness and unique appeal of limbal rings as they are currently. As someone else in the thread mentioned, I'm worried about how the limbal ring options will look if even the brightest possible color looks that dimmed down.
To think this will be one of my first forum posts ever.
So I myself don't mind the new look necessarily and would prefer a more in between as I have always found the LED look of the limbal rings to be a little too much for me personally. I worked pretty ridiculously hard to get more of a gradient for my girl with hers.
HOWEVER I also think that the limbal rings have worked as they have for a long time and to dull them down this much is not good and it changes a lot of people's characters by a lot.
So I would almost prefer that they give us an option. Which I know would be a little rough to request when they're already doing a lot. But I feel like having an option where it can work more as a gradient and another option where you can keep the bright shininess would be a better answer. Because truth be told I have always wanted a little bit more customization and having the option for either one would just simplify things and give more people what they were looking for.
I just know I'm one of those that's already disappointed that the shine and coloring on the horns got dialed back from NA FanFest preview because apparently people hated it and I really really liked it. But oh well that was just a work in progress so at least it's not like they gave it and then took it away lol
I really, really, hope that the limbal rings don't lose their glow. I know this has been stated already before by others on different sites too but the glow is a huge reason I even started using them for my WoL. It's such a core part of HOW he looks. I can't imagine him without them anymore and I really hope they don't take away the glow.
Echoing the many others here advocating for at least a toggle for the glow. I have multiple Au Ra characters, including my main character I've been playing for years, and the glow of the limbal rings have been an integral part of how I view and write my characters. I know countless other Au Ra players who feel the same and have discussed it at length on social media. The new eyes would drastically change that.
There are many who are supportive of the new eyes or didn't like the glow in the first place, but there are just as many if not more who loved the old glow, so a toggle is definitely the best answer in this scenario! I really hope it gets implemented that way.
Just wanted to chime in to say I love a prominent glowy limbal ring! I really hope the devs will consider making it some type of slider that adjusts the intensity of the glow so all players can customize to their preference.
For me personally a bright limbal ring is a big part of my wol’s charm and I would be sad to see it go. It feels like such a unique trait for the au ra.
I'm looking forward to the limbal rings not looking like they were drawn on with a marker, personally! I can see the appeal of it, but man am I excited for them to look like they belong on an eye, I do agree that its a bit weird how the color seems to be changing in appearance quite a bit though, that could use some work. Overall though, Auras are making out like bandits here, between the rings and their scales.
While the overall graphics upgrade looks really nice to me, I hope that there will be an option to toggle Limbal Rings or perhaps a slider to adjust their brightness/intensity. As a person with a handful of Au Ra characters with very glowy limbals, I feel like their appearance would lose a lot of its personality were they to be as toned down as in the recent pictures.
Signed up for the forums just to add to the chorus - I hope the limbal rings remain as bright and vibrant as they are now. Some players use it to make their Au Ra look intimidating, and some make it more of an ethereal trait, or let it blend in completely by selecting the same-ish color, but letting them be vibrant provides a few options that dimming them does not. It's a neat trait that's unique to Au Ra too. I even know a player who selected Au Ra as his race when he started just because of how cool he thought the limbal rings were! I hope the vibrancy doesn't go away. That's all I have to say.
Yes! While my main au ra doesn't have limbal rings, I have an alt one that does and the way the limbal rings glow is so pretty. She wouldn't feel the same iif the limbal r ings suddenly became flat and dull. While the update where it's dulled a bit doesn't look bad, it really does feel like it takes away the uniqueness of the trait and I don't think it will be as noticeable on au ra as it currently is, which makes me sad. I really hope they decide to keep the limbal rings as they currently are. The other changes to au ra are fine; I like that the scales will look less waxy and I feel like they'll be a little ore pronounced and feel more natural.
But the limbal rings? The limbal rings deserve to be bright.
At least give us a light/dark toggle like we have for lip color!
Edit: Just wanted to say that I signed up for the forums JUST to chime in with my feedback, because this IS a concerning issue, as it will drastically change the way au ra with the beautiful, bright, glowy limbal rings look.
My feedback here is specifically regarding Au Ra. Everything else I'm excited for or okay with, but I'm highly concerned about the proposed changes to Au Ra.
First off, I love the scale work that has been done. The new scales are beautiful- although I hope to see Xaela scales at the next Fanfest!
The limbal rings, though. Those concern me. I would like for the devs to support multiple options for limbal rings for Au Ra- either a glow toggle, or similarly to how lipstick and face paints work, having a bright/subtle colorset for rings.
I feel like the proposed more subtle limbal rings and the changes to the textures and materials for the new faces has overall made the Au Ra face a little more "human-like" than they were before, and part of what draws me to Au Ra are the parts that are less human-ish, and the limbal rings and prominent septum are a huge part of that.
I also joined up today to add to those asking for the sharp limbal rings to remain--either outright staying, or perhaps having an option to choose between how they are represented now and the dimmer version we have been shown this weekend. I think I enjoy both in all honesty (I don't play one so this is entirely an outside opinion), but I 100% agree that it is something very, very unique to the Au Ra and is something that a player should be able to pick themselves.
I agree with the above. I have an Au Ra character where I purposefully used black irises and white limbal rings for a unique effect, and if it's faded and no longer looks like it's glowing it will be such a shame. Perhaps there could be an option for a 'bright' or 'faded' effect, similar to how makeup can be togged back and forth in the character creator?
I'm a fan of the new limbal rings, but my character also doesn't have very bright ones. I do have concerns about how it will effect characters who do have a strong contrast between their limbal ring color and their main eye color, because it may effect the overall characters appearance too much. A toggleable option would be a nice compromise for people who want the old style but I don't know if that's even in the realm of possibility within the games programming...
I currently use the 2nd darkest color option for limbal rings, and depending on the lighting they still glow just as bright as the lighter colors. I used to use a very light color on my character before opting to darken it because I liked the appearance more... If anything if they're able to make the darker colors actually look dark and the lighter colors look light, I think that would please more people.
Keep the glow! I don't have an au ra character, but the glow has always been one of the cooler and unique things about them. It'd be like taking the cat eyes away from sun cats.
