Like, guys, heavy cutsceen JRPG is not a new nor a rare thing. Xenosaga was a triology of 3 games came out in 2006 and it was literally a movie. Trail of Cold Steel is a series that started in 2013 that just recently had its 5th and last entry. The 5th games hasn't come out in English but you can find youtube series that have all the cutsceen in the 4th games and it'll add up to 20+ hours. And guess what? It's the most successful series NIS ever release, so much that they're going back to localize the older games of franchise while the Japanese developer already start release the next series.
And no, none of those are comparable to an actual visual novel. And I'm saying this as a person had started reading Visual novel back in the 90', and read the first tittle from TYPE-MOON (once of the biggest company in the VN scene currently) when they started out as just a doushijin writer. VN with gameplay is a very specific thing, you can go play Eien no Aselia (Aselia of the Eternal in English) if you want to see what it looks like, most of them actually very similar to the classics SRPGs on the NES back in the day.
So ...
Point 1: FF14 is no where near what an actual VN is.
Point 2: you'll be surprise at how many people enjoy that kind of games. Who know, maybe that's one of the reason why FF14 is enjoying its current success?
Those kind of games exist, and the people who enjoy them exists too!. I personally can never get into the Diablo type of game, but I would never go around ditching on those game or the people playing them.
