I hate to say it, but it's not a bug, it's a feature. As I understand it, each creature is essentially isolated from actions until you decide to end that care following the prompts on the caretaker. The same goes for the crops.
If it’s a feature, then it would be nice to be adjusted into future QoL update alongside whatever they’re going to add.
Take your blinders off. I'm not defending anything, aside from common sense approaches to simple problems. I even agreed about putting some correction in, but you don't wanna see that cause you got some kind of hard on for this bullshit "he's defending! he's defending! white knight" but look at you, adding nothing of value.
I don't trust the system to handle everything for me. I like to use my brain when playing.
The feature where you catch an animal and release an old one should work. Same exact thing just happened to me. What a stupid comment. It's obviously a coding bug.
You're just as bad as those people on reddit.

You mislead yourself not reading through everything, like this thread where this has all been discussed. You just scanned for the first comment that wasn't in support of this person and that was it. Bravo. I'm black? Ok, Pot.
You say it's an obvious bug. That begs the question of you or the others: Where is the bug report?
I took this thread less as a bug report and more as a "Heads up, this is the behavior, before this catches anyone else off-guard like it did me." to other players. There's a place for both types of post, honestly.
I mean... I do tend to think you're correct that this is (sort of) "working as intended", inasmuch as I suspect the animals have records allocated in a different system when being cared for by the mammets, which would be left as garbage state if the animal were released external to that system; it would explain why you can't release the animal without first ending the mammet's orders to care for the animal.
And while I personally still think they could improve the messaging -- and ideally block you from attempting the capture (or at least, provide a warning) if you have no free spots -- that's not really a "bug report" so much as an "improvement request" for the UX, to make the situation a recoverable error rather than an unrecoverable one. And that -- feature requests/improvements -- is something the CS folks do direct people to post in General Discussion for... well, general discussion.
Yeah. I know it's probably not a bug, but if people wanna throw that word around and call it obvious, I wanna see the post in this section. ;)
Sorry I didn't get back to this a couple months ago. I filled my pasture with 20 animals then continued catching rares and whenever I did, I had no problem letting one go as part of the process of catching another. The problem started after I decided to put all my animals under care of the mamments. So if you plan to catch more still, leave some animals NOT under care or leave their slot blank.
