I can't imagine calling a game with a sub 1% maintenance rate excessive. Someone is concern trolling...

I laughed so hard at this.
Sure, there's way less players online, but how out of touch can you actually be? Middle of the night is a prime time for people in north american timezones that work and go to school.
Also can you be any ruder? You could easily sit there and rattle off all your problems and I can easily sit there and tell you how they're all first world and how someone else has it worse. That doesn't make it any better, now does it?
Anyways, the maintenance right now isn't that bad yet but it is worrying. You don't want to see it go any further than this.
Plus your key people -- the ones you definitely want involved so nothing goes wrong -- may not want to work graveyard shifts. And they may be difficult enough to replace that you don't dare try to make them.
The last thing we want is this scenario:
.Quote:
Key_Developer: I got a date Monday night with the person I mentioned; it looks like I'll finally get lucky.
So can you find someone else to do the maintenance?
Manager: Sure, no problem. We'll just get an intern to do it
I'm a raider and while I'm sad to lose out on some P8S prog tonight, the earlier maintenance also means I get to play more Splatoon 3 with my friends who haven't gotten to see me while I've been locked away in raid.
Why would you have any concern. The maintenance schedule has gotten less over the years, not more.
We only get maintenance when we need it, and only for the time they require. Hence why we have frequent early ends for maintenance, but very, very, very few extensions. I can't remember the last time they had to extend one actually.
The maintenance was through the night here in EU and servers were back up come morning.
I would rather they take the time to fix large issues than have us wait weeks because a few people get their knickers in a twist.
Prime time for one part of the US, js. East and Mid are into the night hours when people are asleep. The only people really getting screwed over are the West Coasters but again, you can survive one night without a game. Spend time with your family or friends or play something else. If you can't survive without FF then that's a whole other issue.
There's more people in the world than just the US and this thread is a reminder of why we're called the entitled country.
Regardless of when they schedule a maintenance, someone somewhere is going to draw the short straw. I'm an NA player, and a casual (for the OP, as if it really matters lol) and I am unbothered by their maintenance schedule. And yes, a lot of my play time is during those late-night hours. I just...don't play those nights. Life goes on.
"We're." Do you have a mouse in your pocket, or did you just happen to forget that North America is more than just the U.S.?
I'm not going to argue against that it's just a game or anything. I'm just pointing out that it might suck a little for some people. I also don't think it's prime time for just west coast players since evenings are often really busy for a lot of people and they sometimes won't get on until 9-12 PM.
Perhaps I shouldn't call it prime time for those areas, but I do think there's a crowd that does get on that late, in addition to people that have night schedules.
Anyways, I didn't come here to argue for changes or anything like that. I'm just pointing out that it does suck for some people and reminding people not to be rude about it.
Entitled for what? wanting to be able to play a game I pay money for monthly? Not wanting every maintenance to fall under my region's prime time hours instead of it being spread out?
That doesn't seem entitled at all. Maybe European players and JP players should be inconvenienced by a patch every now and then instead of it always falling on NA hours.
I wouldn't say people annoyed are entitled, availability of a service has become a huge part of our modern culture. That said, if they have to bring down all the servers at once, I guess it makes sense that they do it when it is convenient for them. If they're not, and only bringing down say the NA servers during prime time NA just because it's convenient for the employees in Japan? Eh, that's not cool imo.
Steam is a worldwide service that goes under maintenance Tuesday, shutting down all of their online games. Of course some people are slightly inconvenienced but this is what you have to do to properly maintain servers to make sure they're working as best as possible and patching up any vulnerabilities, hence the name maintenance.
FFXIV is far, far, FAR from excessive maintenance. They even give us a 3 day warning in advance. It sucks that it can happen during your freetime, but... just do something else. What are you gonna do, tell them "no do it another time"?
This. Square Enix is a small company and doesn’t have the time or resources to excessively plan maintenance for optimal time periods. They’re a Japanese company, so they will always plan when Japanese players are usually offline. And given the very old infrastructure that Square has, it would be very devastating if the game didn’t have maintenance at all.
Also, it’s not like we have much content to play anyway. Most of my friends are finished with the game and are going back to WoW or other games. FFXIV isn’t something you’re supposed to play every day, only once a week if you’re a raider. Most people just idle and chat and they could easily do those things on Discord.
We should all be grateful that we only pay $13 a month, that’s cheaper than Netflix.
With maintenance... My thing is, they give enough heads up and warning that it's happening. You're given the information to say, "Okay, game will be unavailable from x time to y time, so I won't be able to do xyz between these times."
Anything online you should expect to have some form of maintenance. Mobile games have it weekly. WoW has its weekly maintenance.
So which one of you dropped the noodle code or tripped on a wire that we're getting so many maints
If they had maint for content patches by region, people would be complaining that jp gets new stuff first, they have better latency for wf races because na/EU groups had to jump to jp datacenters to participate, etc, etc.
This way, everyone gets fixes/content at the same time.
Maintenance comes with the territory of mmo's though. Casual player or not you just sort of plan around it. I get that it sucks if the maintenance time over laps with a person's available time to play but really unless something has a hard deadline like if you dont do it by this time you'll never be able to get or do it, its nothing to get mad over or feel like your now behind.
actually you should. considering it has a truly global subscription base and couldnt give two shakes of a rats tail who might be inconvenienced by maintenance, and was the big boy on the block for a while, AND Yoshi has said he was influenced by them.... you dont think that how they do things is just a little responsible for how other companies with a similar product are going to do things as well?
I know, you dont care about so no need to state it. you dont have to care about it to be honest, because SE isnt going to care about or change for you either. but I doubt they have a schedule up with your name on it and they plan when to inconvenience you and you only. maintenance is needed, they notify us and they do it. game comes up life goes on. if you cannot plan around something they give you plenty of notice on, thats on you, not them.
one of those unhappy facts of life apparently.
I don't ever find it more than mildly inconvenient. If you life is so one-dimensional that the downtime is a BFD, you should consider broadening your interests a little.
However, I don't agree that it is a typical maintenance schedule. FFXIV has more frequent and longer maintenance periods than any MMO that I have played in the last 10 years, including GW2, WoW, Lotro, and ESO. I take it as a sign that their back end infrastructure is a bit of a mess, making applying patches or doing database maintenance a lengthy process. It is what it is.
Major catastrophe, how ever will I recover?
Signed,
Unaffected casual player.
Believe it or not, Final Fantasy XIV isn’t the only game that you’re ever able to play throughout the entirety of your free time; try something else for a short bit if maintenance lasts while you’re awake.
Three words...GET OVER IT!!! *drops mic*
Really? Cant seak to gw2 or eso but though wow has gotten better over time i remember 8+ hour maintenance every tuesday and even when it was back up it was very laggy and hard to play, so i would plan to make tuesday my run around errand day Just saying. Personally i would rather take the couple hour maintenance to keep the game running smoothly then not. Like i said though nothing in this game is time sensitive that people should get mad over a bit of down time.
From USA Central Time
maint always goes down at either 11:00 pm or 1:00 am in the morning. By that time, i've finished all daily activities and I'm ready to go to bed.
Maint has never effected me at all and no I don't do endgame raids.
I wanted to suggest OP's in an inconvenient time zone but we have an EU player that just claimed that Maint is during legit work hours for our friends in Europe.
There is no war in Ba Seng Se.
Does FFXIV have more planned maintenance windows than many MMOs? Maybe. Does FFXIV have far fewer unplanned maintenance windows than many MMOs? Absolutely.
And personally, as a player, I'm more than willing to accept the minor inconvenience of the former to be spared the major inconvenience of the latter.
It's like doing maintenance on your car. One person takes the car in to get the oil changed regularly, brings it to the mechanic for periodic check-ups, and deals with minor problems right away. The other person doesn't deal with all those scheduled maintenances -- they have their car available more often, because they aren't sending it in for tune-ups -- but when something goes wrong, now there's a good chance it's more serious and the car's got to be taken to the shop and stay there for a while.
What FFXIV does -- planned, short maintenance windows on a reasonably consistent schedule -- is good dev-ops procedure; they're taking good care of the car, even if it means sometimes it's at the mechanic for a checkup. The alternative -- never dealing with anything until an actual problem arises -- means when a problem does crop up, it's often a lot bigger and more critical... and frequently means you have an unplanned outage, which is way less convenient for anyone (and also way worse in terms of your service's reputation).
I'm a casual non-raider and am not pissed off by maintenance. My wife works very early mornings and I'm usually up around 3 am NA Eastern and in bed early so mornings before I have to go to work are the best time for me to play. Any time maintenance goes past midnight, I'm "inconvenienced" and have reduced play time. It's a disruption to my routine, but it's not a big deal.
I'd rather have the planned and well-communicated maintenance than the alternative.
I can understand emergency maintenance. However, this all Worlds complete servers shutdown, mind you, is to implement 6.21. And they will do this again for 6.25. I can't speak for everyone, but I would rather wait and get the whole patch instead of staggering it across multiple maintenance and server shutdowns.
I wouldn't really fault a player for getting frustrated with this. Time is extremely valuable.
People still bitching about maintenance? Boohoo. Lol im a casual non midcore or hardcore raider and i dont have a problem. When the game is down tonight, i have other games to play and sleep after.
