Now that you mentioned it, what is your opinion about disabling baghnakhs?
They paralyze the enemy right?
Doesn't this effect make them a better weapon than Peiste? I mean it's a very good effect right? How often can you land the paralyze?

Disabling Baghnakhs inflict Paralyze, Poison, and 2 more enfeebles I can't remember atm, in NMs I see Poison and Paralyze in the NM, so I don't think it's very hard to land Paralyze and Poison, I would say 1 in 10 hits (this for Pugilist is nothing since Flurry is 3 hits... lol).
And I have a pair of +1 Disabling, it's attack gets higher than NQ Peiste Cesti, so yah, I think it's more useful using the disablings, more useful in NMs in my opinion~ ^_^
Pugilist is one of the best hate generating tanks in the game.Quote:
Tanking, sure PGL can tank well and almost with no problems if you have a good eva build, but you still won't be able to tank a "group" of mobs, let's say Dodore and his minions, is just too hard for PGL to keep hate from those type of situations
Even with Out of Sight, I still regularly pull hate.
If i don't have that trait equiped, I end up tanking, and this is with the 2-3 gladiators having Intimidate equiped, Warmonger, Provoke and Wardrum used every time they are up.
As soon as I start using Accomplice they can't pull hate off me, not even the archers spamming all there buffs and hitting for crazy damage.
Yah, but try keeping Dodore and his minions on you all the time or even Goblins NM. =/ I never said PGL can't tank, we just can't tank with mob groups.
Weapon skill, aura pulse
Accomplice a healer, they will have group hate
For starting, I would suggest having maurader to 30 for warmonger
Shock spikes will also help while establishing hate
It's really just a matter of setup and what you have available, if nothing else just have a glad start and accomplice them, or a marauder will work as well
disabling is just paralyze and poison, no clue what smothering inflicts. but the proc rate seems pretty decent.
Your HQ bagnakhs beat out a NQ cesti, thats why you have to get a HQ cesti or hora. Used my reg disablings on NMs seems they did lower dmg compared to the other knuckles
i agree about utilizing the diff skills from other classes for certain situations, warmonger will def help for holding multiple mobs and using aura pulse or brandish II.
but as for dodore I'm not sure, Akuun you actually tanked Dodore and all his mobs? or just a a minion or Dodore? Doubt a DoW can tank them all since in melee range they would be using Lvl 5 Petrify and Tail Whip. Thats bascially GG right there your not gonna be using any of your moves to be able to hold hate properly
You don't have to tank dodore and his minions at melee range to be tanking. If I have to i tank as pgl from a distance they don't move in since they can hit you fine with range and they're not smart enough to move in for petrify etc.
I don't tank on dodore due to the method of tanking I use
Basically I would have him and his group on me with no way for anyone to pull them off.
I'm pretty much the super enmity tank, so everyone else can unload as much damage
as possible with out worry of pulling hate.
The great buffalo seems tricky as it's hate seems to reset regularly or just ignores it.
If the proc rate is decent like you say and the effect is potent enough, then I believe that this effect alone makes this the better weapon even if Peiste +1 is a bit stronger.Quote:

I have not tested this myself (Only 45R atm) but it sounds good in theory :P
As I said in my previous post, I prefer to be inflicting effects on mobs and doing some dmg than try going all DD on NMs with Pugilist, since even if we go all out, we still can't compare to the damage inflict by ARC and LNC, for me the disabling are my weapon of choice for NMs, even though I have already landed a 604 dmg Victimize II on Uraeus, but took time to get that out... lol
About Smothering, they inflict at least Slow, Sleep, Poison and Silence, and I'm almost sure that Disabling also inflict Silence but much more rarely than the smothering, I've seen Paralyze, Poison and Silence show up on the mobs I attack, but I can't say for sure if it's me or not since I only noticed more in NMs, but once the servers get back up, I'll check out exactly what effects it gives.
Please do test!
Smothering sound interesting too!
These weapon effects are more than worth the little damage you lose from peiste I believe.
I'm usually a DD on my pug on NM fights my stats are in my sig.
I switch between Arc and Pug with my current stats and drop 20 dex for vit when playing as Mrd because i get asked to tank mosshorn as Mrd.
Gear:
Weapon: Peiste Cesti +1
Head: Silver Torcorne
Body: Bucc's Shirt
Waist: Bucc's Sash
Legs: Velveteen Sarouel +1 (matches bucc shirt)
Feet: Toadskin Crakows (matches bucc set)
I don't believe the added effects from disabling or smothering baghs are worth using over higher rank weapons.
Usually there are thaums debuffing the NMs on most fights and the debuffs don't stack and any lesser mobs the debuff wouldn't be worth using
The stats that matter to me, are not shown in the Sig :P
Also yeah maybe on NMs the debuffing weapons might not be better for debuffing purposes, but can you please tell me the difference between Disabling and Peiste or Jade hora in damage on NMs?
I know that but as a pug how are you holding hate on all of them if you are not in melee range?
you can pretty much disregard what he says, i know right now stats don;t really matter that much with how they are working but why in the world would you gimp yourself just so your outfit matches. Boggles me sometimes how some people think looks>stats
yeah you've used all those moves, now what? you just stand out of range and wait for buffs to reset and recast? How are you holding hate w/o any attacks. Those buffs do generate alot of hate and you can accomplice other people but from what I know accomplice doesn't take all the hate from a player it just takes a portion.
Kind of a waste for a pug to tank if you've got a tham they can do the same thing and do damage at the same time, your role would be better off doing DD on Dodore & Minions instead of tanking.
never said that was your tank gear, fact is it stinks for tank or DD gear. Pug are not the best single target tanks but I'll say they do better on single target than groups. What reason do you have to be a tank for Dodore? Tham can do the same thing and do dots and spells, while as a pug your just standing there and doing nothing but spamming buffs that you are not going to do anything with and doing 0 dmg at the same time
Obviously you've never been in a Dodore fight, all we have sometimes is just 2 archers and hes downed in less than 15 mins. Our gladiator does the same thing when he distance tanks Dodore with the exception of spamming wardrum.
Before you start criticizing my gear prove that you even know what you're talking about. I have Tarred Leather Trousers and Bucc's boots believe me its such a minor detail it does nearly nothing.
Not really about proficiency considering how Dodore spawns my LS gets whoever is on and goes out to kill him some times there isn't a glad so any person who can hold aoe threat will do. NMs are a real pushover and Dodore being the easiest of them, my point is Glad, Pug, Thm, Mrd, heck even Lnc with enough mnd and mdef gear can tank Dodore. Apart from Thms who can solo dodore I've personally seen people do it with as few as 3 people and no thm.
I've done Dodore just never tanked it, I've also done it with just a tham, tham can solo it himself but sometimes its fun to duo.
I agree right now gears statwise are pretty broken that most upgrades are so minimal its not a big deal for now. That doesn't mean you should run around in crap that adds no benefit to you.
Somehow I missed this reply earlier.
This testing is from much too small a sample.
On NMs alone I will see my damage range from 8-17 on flurry with no changes to stats equipment or def down BR.
To say in such a small test that one clearly out damages the other is a bit short sighted.
For example, there were several more evades and misses with the Jade Hora even though the Jade Hora have 5 more accuracy.
Just like in 11 there is a larger damage discrepancy than you will find in most MMOs.
Also another thing to take into account is the mobs resistance to particular types of damage.
But in this case I think it's simply a matter of damage discrepancy.
NMs due to their massive amount of hit points are a much better mob to get accurate numbers on.
I'll try to pick up a pair of +1 Boarskin Himates and post up some numbers, and make sure that my accuracy is matched so damage percentages won't be skewed by misses.
its not gonna do anything impressive on NMs, the Peiste or Jade will outdmg the boarskins there. But so far for anything non NM it seems on regs hits (heavy, flurry, light, pummel) it will outdo any of the top tier knuckles. Weapon skills are a diff. story seems the top tier knuckles outdo the boarskins in that dept. but not by much. I wouldn't say I've done extensive testing but I have tested it a bunch of times on levequest mobs and boarskins come out on top for any mob (dogs, peistes, puks, yarzons, toads, you name it)
HP: 1112
MP: 581
Strength: 100
Vitality: 110
Dexterity: 80
Intelligence: 80
Mind: 80
Piety: 40
Since point costs increase as you hit certain tiers (40, 80, ???) I wanted to maximize the amount of points I used. So bring everything up to 40, then the stats most important to me (STR,VIT,DEX,MND) to 80, then dump remaining points evenly into STR and VIT.
This way, even if I want to switch to being a mage, I won't be terribly gimp, and I can heal decently.
But seriously, they need to do away with this stat nonsense and make each class have its own stat progression chart like XI had.
Weapon: Peiste Cesti
Head: Skull eyepatch
Body: Toadskin Harness (Black)
Waist: Tarred Voyager's Belt
Legs: Tarred Leather Trouser's (Brown) (But are a brown/black combo like the toadskin harness)
Feet: Armored Caligae (Black)
Black leather, ftw!
My method on soloing is to start with light jab and then pile up on eva buff, then counter the living daylights out of whatever is trying to hit me. All gear aimed at eva+ ...for tanking I start with spells (yes, spells xD) especially absorb acc, eva, tp, ..everything I used while ranking THM seems to get me killed so I thought why not do the same for threat. Works quite well when aoe tanking, so long as I do not let light jab buff drop.

Magic Defense: 361
Evasion: 188
Elemental Affinities: 84 all
I have to admit the evasion scene isn't as grand as I had hoped for. with earrings I'm well into the 190's and i did notice the severe diminishing returns on str and the such, Looking to see if a more balanced setup would be more beneficial. I'm looking to do some testing in the near future ( Hopefully they fix stats soon ).
I have went with defense heavy, compared with pugilist who swear by defense and the differences in damage intake isn't that drastic, but then again. the evasion they don't have vs the evasion that I do doesn't hold the candle as much as I'd hope. I still prefer an evasive setup and the lack of HP hasn't really taken me out of the picture in the tanking scene ( World NMs ).
On non NMs its quite noticeable if you keep light strike up, if a concussive blow is on the mob to further compound the good base evasion ( If dex really does help evasion proc ). Sometimes it feels like Dex is eva proc, where evasion is the misses that occur. What do you guys think? Great topic too lots of stuff I have been wondering myself on how other pugilists carry themselves ^^/
My first time on the PUG forum, exciting times. I see some areas where I can improve my PUG, and I have questions, so here goes my questions:
1. Stat Allocation. I play only PUG and ARC so I think it is time to reallign. Here are my stats and my guess is I should move some of my magic stats over into DEX/STR/VIT???
STR-96, VIT-95, DEX-100, ING-67, MND-66, PIE-66
2. Gear Anything I need to do differently?
Head - Silver Tricorne
Body - Buccaneer's
Legs - Tarred Leather +1
Feet - Padded Duckbills
Hands - Spiked Guantlets
Waist - Tarred Voyagers +1
3. Jewelry. I've rolled for as long as I can remember 3 STR and 1 DEX rings, but now I'm ready a lot about the Mythril Choker. Is it worth it to roll with that?
4. Weapon - Got a Boarskin +1 and a Peist +1. I'm only R46 right now, but from what I'm reading Boarskin +1 is a great everyday weapon unless I can score a +2 at some point.
5. Evasion - Okay so in anticipation of Simmian Smash at 50, what are some of the evasion macros you guys use? I'm guessing a light strike/featherfoot II will work fine, but would putting some evasion jewelry help with that?
6. WS Macro - I've got a Raging Strike/Hawk's Eye/Ferocity/BloodBath set up for my Vicitimize move, but is that too complicated? What about having a separate Blindside II to start out fights?
7. Misc - I use light strike-Heavey-Flurry-Flurry as my main attack pattern. I use consussive blow II and Aura Pulse to back up my Vicitmize. I've got Jarring Strike II macro'd in for when I evade. Can't wait for Vicitmize II and Simian Smash though.
Thanks again for any responses and comments.
I think I'm going to try much less str this time around, gonna give akkuns a go, choker (4) and 4 brass +1's ( 2x4=8 ) for 12 total. Anyone have an idea why YG has * 5atk / mag atk listed on their rings?
Ill try out...
120 total STR, keep Dex (174) rest into vit.
there is an interesting post on zam who was making kparser version for ff14 and did some rough testing with str and similar builds, it is still inconclusive but it clearly shows how little impact stats may have in the current state of affairs as stated and voiced in the previous posts in this thread. Hopefully some hard numbers start showing up somewhere soon!
I read somewhere that the 5 attack was a hidden stat on the + versions, but I have 2 +1 and I can't say I've seen any difference in damage on normal or TP attacks.
My understanding is that this info is data mined, but that doesn't mean that it actually works as the internal mechanics may simply ignore the enhancement
Cheers
thanks for the reply akuun :D and boo ;-;
1. Unless you're going for a hybrid build of mage and pug, then you'll only need Mnd for magic defense.
(I'd say put those points into Vit Dex and Str)
2. Depends on what you want to gear for, Evasion, Defense, or Magic Def., I go for a balanced gearing myself but have pieces for focused defensive types as well.
If your leaning towards def I would rep the shoes with Armored Caligae, and If you want an extra 7 def, you could use a Harrier's Jacket, it also has +Dex and Vit. The rest looks to be the top Defense gear you can get other than + versions
3. Jewelery I feel is for adjustment, wether it be stats, magic def, accuracy etc, so just use what you'd like to improve
4. That's what they say, I still haven't seen it in my own experience, but yes for farming and grinding, they are a cheap easy repair and do a solid job for the rank and to 50.
5. The only thing I use is Featherfoot II, I don't bother with light strike, to be completely honest.
I gear balanced and have I think around 180 evasion, 310 def, and 310 m.def.
6. I have it setup for my archer, but on my pug I like to do it manually. The only macro I have set for attack is Simian Thrash so I can pop it quickly when I evade
7. I'll explain why I don't use light strike so as to share some understanding I may or may not have lol.
If you use light strike regularly, then every 10 secs you are restarting your flurry from the beginning.
While I only stop my flurry of flurries, when I absolutely must or have hit 3000tp.
By doing this, I should be maximizing my dps, optimizing my stamina and building tp 2-3x faster than most classes.
Prior to approaching 3000 tp I will do a stamina burn, but before that, I rarely drop below 50% this is resevered for OH! $&*@! moments. While I'm manually popping my attack buffs my stamina is regenerating and I have time to coordinate BRs.
On the subject of stamina, I hear many on my server complain about not having TP for a move, that they run out too fast.
The other is that the controls feel unresponsive and they can't perform moves or it repeats the last move.
All I can say is stop mashing buttons ^^. It's fine to burst, or slow your attack because you have pulled hate off the tank. At the same time, your normal pace should be about the length of the full animation for heavy strike and flurry.
It can be a little faster if your using other low cost or free abilities as well as they will allow your stamina to recover a bit.
Cheers
@Akuun - I can see what you are saying about light strike. Most times I also just begin with light strike only and then go into straight flurries. By the time you rinse out a few weapon skills on leve mobs you are done anyway.
And yes timing is important with PGL, I gotta learn to slow down my button mashing because I don't want to miss my Jarring Strike/Simian Smash moments
Ya, I'm also guilty of button mashing, usually when the NM is almost dead and I just want it dead.
I'm really bad about it on other classes since most of the attack animations are shorter than pug ones. (plus i like to attack fast)
I'm a speed whore lol, ffxi mnk nin and dnc were my only 75s
