So it sounds like you are describing the second phase being your problem where rocks fall from the sky. For this just watch the boss. He literally spawns the rocks to throw at you, just watch for where they aren't going to fall. In addition to this, there will be ground AOEs you have to dodge at the same time. Keep an eye on the ground and the sky and you'll be fine.
The trick to avoid getting knocked back into the wall of death around the outside of the arena is to get as close to the center of the knockback marker as possible. Remember you CAN overlap the yellow spread AOE's at this point because they don't hit until after the knockback happens. So it goes knockback > colored lanes explode > spread AOE. You have a split second to spread a bit more after the lane explosion if you are still overlapping your Trust AOE.
I HAVE HAD THE EPIPHANY!
It's the timing! I know there are a LOT of mechanics the higher you go where it looks like "there's nowhere that isn't orange," but it's about the order of explosions. This is one of those! It finally hit me that there's a significant delay between when the spread mechanic starts its tell, the knockback goes off, then you have seconds to execute the spread! I was often getting DOT'ed because I felt I couldn't go right into the center because "it says spread, I have to spread," but you don't until AFTER the knockback! It's a thin window but so is every overlapping mechanic, this is just a different version of it! It's the timing, that's the key!
Stand opposite the glowy screen color.
I had a Healer last night who refused to heal during this boss battle and preferred to DPS. The DPS blamed me the tank when they died when it casted Flames of Decay which is unavoidable and hit the DPS and killed them after most were mid health after Crumbling Sky and or Aetherial Disruption damage which I cannot control if they stand in the wrong place.
We had four wipes in which this guy barely healed and once I died of course everyone followed. Last battle he finally decided to heal and it was a simple battle as always.
I think the only thing that might be justified is toning down the damage from the spread AoEs a bit so you can actually survive a hit from those and the ground AoE back to back without significant mitigation and full HP.
It feels unusually punishing for a dungeon mechanic, though the mechanic itself isn't terribly difficult.
There are 2 main mechanics on this fight: The colors and the meteors
The "safe" color is the one the opposite of the one which glows on your screen. This will also occasionally be paired with a spread mechanic which will go off a few seconds after the unsafe color erupts. Later it will also be paired with a knockback. You can either aim yourself to be knocked into the safe color, or you can just arm's length or surecast the knockback.
The meteors are extremely simple once you understand the attack pattern.
First look at the boss in the sky. One of the 2 central lanes will be safe. Once the meteors pass, the other central lane will be safe. Finally, the safe lane will be the edge lane which was next to the first safe lane.
Example:
x = unsafe lane, o=safe lane
attack 1 - [x][x][o][x]
attack 2 - [x][o][x][x]
attack 3 - [x][x][x][o]
Is that the level 85 dungeon one ? Oh god i hate that final boss. I got wiped twice with trust. Maybe im just color blind or dumb af xD i avoided this dungeon with my dragoon and did daily roulettes after I’ve neglected the class for so long when reaper came out lol xD
For me, it is that my old eyes have trouble making out those really faint symbols in time. Maybe it's also my monitor but they are so faint that it is easy to miss them.
Let the boss be. This game is too easy as it is.
Meanwhile Sephrot EX is laughing at the thread. The meteor mechanic in the final boss of the 85 dungeon was great! Please don't change it, the meteors crashing down with the AoEs was like an actual boss fight where I had to avoid things!
Can we stop dumbing games down because people fail?
It only makes the problem worse imo because it conditions people into playing at a lower level instead of making them improve.
Er... don't think anyone asked for stuff to be removed or changed. Anyways.
Well done, OP! There's a certain satisfaction that comes from figuring stuff out. I hope you found it enjoyable and rewarding. :)
Okay, so I had HUGE problems with this fight the first two times I ran it. And to be forum appropriate I would describe the tank in the second run as "unpleasant" about it. However, it was not because I did not understand the mechanics. I knew what to look for, but the symbols simply never showed up at all!
Our healer told me he had heard about this happening as well with other players. I watched a video of the fight and sure enough I never got what was supposed to show up. In my runs the triangle never appeared at all and when the circle sometimes appeared it was super faint and the wrong color.
Now I do what people say not to do and use a TV for my monitor (you want to argue about that feel free to write me a large check so I can buy a new rig, otherwise let it go). It is supposedly a 120 refresh rate. So I had my graphics card set for that as well as the game set for 120 refresh rate. Thinking a graphics setting may have been the cause of my woes with this dungeon I set the refresh on both my GPU and game settings back to 60.
I ran the dungeon again as a tank (so I could survive a couple of hits) and sure enough I see the symbols (although very late I should say). They are still very difficult to see as faint as they are and all of the other flashing and blinding effects going on. If I could recommend any change it would not be to change the mechanics or difficulty of the fight but simply make the symbols more visible in some way.
So if you wipe and want to call out people in your group and be "unpleasant" - first ask them if they can even SEE the symbols for the mechanics. Believe it or not some of us actually played through to Endwalker and actually learned some things along the way. Be a reason why this game is so great and help out your fellow players.:) If they need to leave to fix issues, you will find a sub to tag in. Just try not to immediately become a toxic troll.
Dont do trusts. Trusts are one of the worst things this game added.
Any competent healer will never let you die in this boss, plus teammates can offer suggestions if they see you are new to the dungeon (talking from experience here). Sure, it can go all the way wrong too but you at least learn with other players.
Trusts are literally why I converted to FFXIV for life. Respectfully, to each their own.
I am only now comfortable W2W tanking for live players at almost 1000 days subbed. The community isn't always roses, and "owning" my time in dungeons, whether the community is feeling welcoming today or not, is so important.
