Why nearly no one is playing healers nowadays ?

It's the exact opposite.

The veteran players and good healers who want to play their best have been discouraged away, because they've been told "healers only heal" while being refused anything to actually heal by the devs, while simultaneously having nothing else to do either except spam one button because the devs prefer to listen to the "healer should be the netflix and afk class" players.
The majority of healers are new players who moved to the class because they get away with only having one responsibility for 10-20% of the fight and can just do mechanics and stand there otherwise. Thus the quality of healers have plummeted.

"Frantically spamming abilities like a chimp on crack" is pure nonsense when even at the highest levels of play, healers don't do more than about 30-40 actions per minute, including oGCD's. That's not exactly rapid spam. Did the chimp break its hand or something?

No healers are not green DPS. They're a support class and I'm personally tired of people trying to defend not supporting your party to the best of your ability, like every other class and role in the game is expected to. Healing is support. Dps is support. You have both. Why wouldn't you use your full support toolkit?
In the majority of cases a dps spamming healer is miles better at healing than an afk Medica II spammer, because their goal isn't big damage numbers ...it's a focus on how they can be as useful to the party as possible for as much of the fight as possible. The Medica II spammer on the other hand frankly doesn't care, they just want an easy clear and free praise for less work.

I like most of the post sir, but I think the person you were responding, was just saying that there people who want the healer roles to be about frantically pushing buttons not that they believed it was that way. And like you I feel it's not breakneck apm stuff.

I am definitely not a healer main, I dps more than anything , and part of the reason I dont get into healing is the entirety of the role is boring, I guess is the best way to put it. The only healing class that had any "difference" in terms of gameplay was Astrologian for me, and when ShB came out that went right out the window, and from all the comments I saw from other healers they felt the same about their roles.

And people are opinionated, sure. I've seen some say it is boring because healing requirements are so easy, outside of savage that they struggle to stay awake and want more diversity in their dps options.. some say they feel like they have too many ogcds, and think more emphasis should be put on their actual hard cast spells etc.. having played other mmorpgs , and playing this one, what makes it hellishly boring for me is the rigidity of dungeon design.. it isnt that you can just do a dungeon 1 time and know what to expect and need in terms of healing/dps, it's that you can do 1 dungeon and know what to expect in all dungeons from that point on. The exceptions would be up to level 50 arr dungeons and maybe a select few hw dungeons.

It is not just boring for healers. It just gets stale, I dont even log in and hit roulettes up regularly like I used to. I'm just sick of that whole dungeon experience. Opinions on that whole subject vary as to why, to straight up comments like "maybe this isnt the game for you then" if you try to suggest any changes.. but I honestly do feel SE sees the staleness, and will be working to address it over the next 10 to 20 year period. > _>

Strange, I've been getting very fast queue times on my dps classes, which if I made the mistake of assumption means that there's still a healthy amount of healer players jumping into the queue.

And that's the issue. You can listen to these forums repeat the 5 same statements over and over again but the data we have on whether or not the majority agrees, disagrees, or could simply care less.

If there is a lull in healers, "Healer became boring so everyone quit" is a broad statement that can't be determined as accurate, it could be that the healer main's who do still enjoy healing are leveling their alt classes, or don't need to run roulettes because they're caught up for the expansion, or they're simply taking a break from the game until new content is added.

First of all, quoting the developers- well I can understand that while people read what developers intend in order to understand job design, and in order to help guide their job choice- however developers are by no means infallible, in addition developers are often not always permitted to follow their own personal preferences.

Secondly, I don't understand why you would think that you would feel that DPSing on a healer would prevent you from healing. Often, DPSing can allow you to heal more efficiently, and that is a more enjoyable experience for everyone, not only the healer. I would say that the only time I felt frantic was in a perfect storm such myself being new, the tank doing a large pull and not using CDs.

Right, but developers create the current healing meta by their decisions:
-Low incoming damage
-Incredibly strong heals
-Choreographed damage

The point isn't frantic spamming to overheal, but rather more healing casts per minute in content so that you're not spamming glare or broil or whatever. Other games have things like anticipating damage spikes by cast-cancelling, mana management, and other healer responsibilities.

If a DPS class spent most of their time spamming one button (I mean, BRD gets oGCDs), they would burn out, too.

Well, I could see that there could be multiple approaches. I"ve healed in other games, I'm sure many people in FFXIV have, other games are great for inspiration.

I certainly hate one-button spam too. that's why I consider AST just a bit better due to card management, and it's a more fluid healer, but the DPS choices are so boring.

Do I find mana management interesting? Been there, done that, nope.

Will the game change from choreographed damage? I doubt it, so then as players learn a fight they will get more efficient at fight. There could be healing checks, but they'll remain predictable. So that will likely leave us with buffs and DPS as options, which is fine with me.

But maybe I'm completely wrong, in which case I'll have to adjust or play another job. Time will tell.

The simplest solution is to have over healing/topping off party HP proc some buff that's a minor benefit for the party, like.... idk some minor DET buff or some such, but limit said hypothetical buff from over healing so that it can only proc every so often and have that cooldown of sorts be shared between both healers or make it two separate but stackable buffs that can only be proc'ed by shield and throughput healers to incentivize and cement their design aspirations with having two subsets of healers and wanting one of each subset present in all raid comps. That's the simplest solution and it's not a flawless solution either as it has its downsides.

The best solution however, is to give all the healers (individually) the same manner of fluff AST has with its cards and make the job gauges more engaging for WHM and SCH so healers don't lose their minds though imo. The buff idea above is dumb but I noticed the best way to make inroads in allowing for more support effects is to tie them into roles and into actions you're gonna be bringing and performing anyway (see the new various tank CD benefits coming in EW or buff maintenance that a number of DPS jobs have for performing their rotations) so I just pulled something off the top of my head that would be less invasive in terms of implementation (don't have to touch any kits) and tied to the healer role which is already mandatory and tied it to actions which are also similarly mandatory while adding a threshold that is more of a suggestion but if met can pay off for the group.

Healers biggest issue in their design is that the other shoe doesn't drop for them the way it does for DPS and tank design AND you don't feel engaged unless things go horribly wrong or mistakes are commonly made which together with the simplified DPS kit all just compounds into a "malaise of blah" for the role.

certainly for many of us here, the healer jobs atm are not our thing and that's why we're asking for changes back to what we did enjoy and future changes to follow the ideas and gameplay style that we did like

Define "nearly no one".

The game probably has something like 1 million active players at any time. Of the 1,000,000 or so active players, something like 200,000 are probably in PF at any given time. And we know that the majority of these are almost always going to be DPS players.

I routinely see both tank and healing being the Adventurer In Need on my data cetner (Primal). It goes back and forth depending on how close we are to a major patch. It's Tanks early on and then Healers, usually, once the tanks are geared up.

The major exception is that Healer tends to show up in Expert a little more often, and that in 24 mans, it tends to be healers or even DPS instead of tanks, probably because all 24 mans from World of Darkness onward have been 1 tank but still 2 healers and also 5 DPS.

I get the feeling that you're overeading things from that paragraph a bit?

Whilst I can't put words into Liam's mouth. As far as I'm concerned, if you are keeping your GCD rolling, and a healthy portion of those GCDs are doing something useful, you are a good player. It's really that simple. Hardcore doesn't come in to it.

You don't have to raid 4+ days a week and aim for a week 1 kill to be good. Can you let Medica II and Whispering Dawn tick away to top the raid after a 24 man AoE? Congrats, you're good in my eyes.

I think Liam's stance is perfectly valid, I think you're just taking his definition of good to completely the wrong extreme. There absolutely is an issue with healing requirements in this game as a whole. Perhaps fights are tuned too low, perhaps our ilevel scales too rapidly rendering relevant content obsolete long before it's time? That's what these threads are here to discuss.

Writing off an important discussion just because you don't like a detail in how it's presented isn't the way to go.

There’s a reason there’s about a dozen responses here disagreeing with your recent posts. You don’t have to be a ‘hardcore healer’ to see that something is wrong with them and encounter design. Despite the frequency of player damage in non-dungeon content increasing at a fair clip over the years (Mostly when things go wrong), healers have not only managed to maintain their DPS GCD uptime with that demand at an average level of play but they have been consistently exceeding it when they actually coordinate closer to the extent you’re straw-manning at. If FFLogs proves anything it’s that even the most brain dead healer can clear Savage content with enough persistence (Ultimate requires way more focus on resolving mechanics properly and playing your job optimally even when compared to Savage) despite healer DPS being required. That is entirely due to the misalignment between fight design and how busted their current kits are AND prior kits were. Older content had less oGCDs more DoTs to juggle and more tank damage across the board. Healing as a base concept is about minimizing resource waste. This game simply doesn’t want to stress players into micromanaging those resources enough, even at a casual level.

The way I see it, there are two types of players. The players who are willing to learn and try their best and want to contribute as much as they can to the team. They might be a veteran, or they might be a new inexperienced healer who still panics a bit, safety heals and doesn't know the full toolkit yet. The skill level varies, but they have the right attitude and will listen to advice and aim to improve. That's more than enough. Then you have the players who don't care and won't listen to advice because "it's not my job, it's too stressful, I don't like dps, don't tell me how to play" and so on. That second type of player will never improve and will always be stuck at the bare minimum. They have no goal or desire to go further.

I have full respect for the first type of player and very little for the second type. I know who I'd want healing me in a group. Sadly, it feels more and more like healing is being designed for, and drawing in more of that second type.

Healers are boring til we get a rework.

There are plenty of healers in game. Ok they are mostly in venue showing their 2B pants but hey, at least, it's good for my queue time. I'll miss the instant pop after EW release though :s

All the new dps playing "sage mains" will realise that the class is pretty much just a copy paste of scholar with a couple tweaks and drop it hard and fast because it's still mind numbingly boring.

They’re perceived as too complex and too hard for most people to play. When the healing community says they’re “not good”, the idea is that they’re not strong not that they’re not “fun”.

It’s why when I meet folks in Alliance raids and it goes south (for mechanical reasons not from any healers), they just say: “Oh, it’s ok. You’re playing SCH. SCHs can’t heal.”

As a recent player: SCH is still a blast to learn, especially since I have 3 expansions worth and the base game worth of ultimates, extremes, and savage content to work through.

I'd imagine the first 3 weeks / 1 month will see people settle into their "mains". So pretty much at that point the mold will be set and we'll be back to healer insta queues.

I've been gwib farming recently and it's reinforced my choice to leave healing behind in Endwalker. It's easier to get groups as a healer, but the experience repeating easier fights is starkly different: On DPS you can try and optimize just a bit more, whereas on healer you have very little to do on farm content.

I don't think anyone except people anxious to try healing thinks it's too complex and too hard for most people. Scholar has the most complex kit of all 3 healers but that's not saying much since it's not that much more complex than AST and AST is only complicated because you have to remember which card buffs which class

Not gonna knock you for enjoying the class because people like what they like, but healing is at a point where it's so easy that there's a serious shortage of skilled, dedicated healer mains. Heck I picked up AST recently and even though I find it enjoyable I also think that it gets boring/repetitive after a while and it's probably something that'll only be fun to use occasionally

Short answer: Healer gameplay in FFXIV* is boring.

Longer answer: Healers in FFXIV* can be interesting to learn, but once you do, and the content is on farm (assuming it doesn't start that way :cough: 'Expert' dungeons), it gets very mundane spamming a single button over and over again for the majority of an encounter. Worst of all though, because there is practically no resource management in FFXIV, a healer’s reward for them and their group playing well is simply more single button spam.

For contrast, there are other MMOs that have classes that practically spam a single button most of the time, but they tend to have resource management (and status effects) as a key part of their gameplay; i.e. it's not so much pressing a button that makes the game engaging / rewarding, it's timing actions and managing your resources such that you and your group can complete encounters in a safe and efficient manner.

Now I'm not advocating that FFXIV go this route - that ship has long since sailed - What I would advocate though, is that healer gameplay be re-designed to better match the gameplay style that FFXIV has adopted. That is; always having something meaningful to engage with at a job level, something to improve, something to perfect (even if you know the content backwards). And if that isn't going to healing (due to the intermittent and largely predictable nature of outgoing damage), then really the only thing FFXIV has left is damage - be it direct or otherwise.

* I say 'in FFXIV' very deliberately, I as usual play Healers in MMOs and usually enjoy the role very much. I even enjoyed WHM in HW (yes, with Cleric Stance), and SCH in SB, but the ShB iteration of healers (which also looks to the be the EW iteration) is simply not enjoyable (outside, perhaps, of brief moments on AST).

Acidblood (a metal healer name) brings up a good point: FFXIV has very little resource management. In other games massive incoming damage necessitates management of over healing and resource optimization (to the point of cast-cancelling heals). But we have strong heals and easily-dodged scripted damage, meaning that resources are not an issue for most savage content unless you have to massively rez the fallen.

Recently I have been farming alliance raids and even in this kind of easy content where you could afk and still clear, healer is the only role that keeps me awake and pay attention. Playing dps is literally put my head down and do my rotation while asleep. I thought that easy content makes healing boring, but it is the other way around. As healer it is still rewarding to keep people alive, while dps without a reason to optimize just makes me ask why am I here

For tanks, they decided to distance themselves from enmity management and allowing them to go full blown DPS mode most of the time while still in the background timing their defensives and group mitigations, so tanks despite having to do the tank role still allow for complex DPS mechanics/rotations and, yet, somehow, are still perfectly able to fulfill their roles as tanks. But for healers they seem to think they need to push the antiquated idea that healers need to be healing all the time and treating DPS as if it's something you'll only rarely have the time to be doing, so they don't need to flesh it out as much. This is just not true in practice, you are mashing Glare/Broil/Malefic at all times you don't need to heal, which is a majority of the time, so why NOT make it more complex while you're inevitably doing so? As complex as it gets is putting a DoT every half a minute. You can have all the DPS stuff on a totally separate hotbar if they really wanted. I really miss the days of Bane and Shadow Flare on scholar... That's just 2 extra buttons that give a lot more complexity and uniqueness to the job, is that really so much to ask for? Player skill has only gone up as the game continues, and yet they still look down on their players not being able to handle more than one mashable attack and one DoT? It feels condescending, especially with all these high level fights we do now. It's not like we're still leveling up through ARR, still getting used to how the game works.

I have also heard the devs say that they don't even factor healer DPS into the fight requirements, which I just gotta call BS on, I think they are outright lying when they say that, that is just truly an insane amount of numbers to just routinely ignore from a game development/balance perspective. Imagine if they didn't count tank DPS for fight design either... Is that just optional DPS too? I don't think so. DPS is a fact of life for all the jobs. Even in the classic FF games going all the way back to FF1, when your party was well off on HP and the white mage didn't need to be healing, you would command it to do some extra attacks, cause why not, they've got Holy, debuffs, shooting arrows, attack spells from using their staff as an item, etc. They don't have to do huge damage, just at least give them some interesting tools when they must do so instead of 2 generic buttons across all of them.

Considering that the stated reason for simplifying the offensive healer toolkit was to make it easier for newer players to juggle dps and healing, I'm pretty sure they have been factoring in healer dps for a while now. Even in that infamous interview back in HW you're referencing they stated that they knew healers dps was required for content when people where going in at the lowest ilevel possible.

The issue is 'keeping people alive' in most content simply means covering their mistakes*... And having an expanded downtime kit doesn't prevent you from doing that. Not having one though, does prevent a sense of being able to optimise the job in a lot of situations, and of resource management, and even of skilled play.

And it's not like all healers need to be designed the same; just as DPS jobs range from the simple fun of DNC to the constant pressure of BLM, why not have a range of Healer jobs? The simplicity of WHM... the resource management of SCH... the depth of AST... the optimisation of SGE.

* IMO most Vulnerability debuffs should be turned into Damage Downs, and most damage should come from unavoidable sources, with avoidable mechanics mostly applying non-removable status effects instead. This would not only give healers more to consistently heal (i.e. uptime), it would make mistakes the responsibility of the person who made them more so than the responsibility of the healer.

I only play my healer when my static asks for it, and I can plan my DPS around the mechanics while there is enough to keep me busy. Other then that I hate healing in DF because I hate being forced to DPS. Healing just makes me tired/bored due to the fact that I only spam one spell with some oGCD heals thrown in the mix. It's not even a challenge, I even tell the tank to pull heavy. I'm STILL bored, AND I PLAY AST!

There have been times that I just didn't DPS at all in DF and I was nothing short of raked over the coals. I just didn't care anymore, and I don't think it is necessary to have healers DPS at all since most DF content can be facerolled through. I'm just exhausted at the thought of people thinking "terrible healer", when LITERALLY nobody died. I don't care if I don't get my comms or meet these people again (I won't), and this isn't a surprize to me that most healers just DON'T want to que up for DF.

If people are upset that there are no healers for DF runs, then maybe lower your expectations of what healers should be doing. If nobody died then you should leave happy that you got your DF dailies done.

You can easily complete a duty in maybe 10-15 min. Healing DPS maybe shaves off 2-3 min of that run. Maybe...

When I tank or DPS I DO NOT CARE if the healer is DPSing....I seriously don't. If they keep me alive as a tank that's all that matters...i'll do the rest. DPS I just avoid damage best I can...but even if I do take damage...the healer more the likely has me.

If SE want's healers to be engaged again...gaining the stigma of healers "should" DPS and everyone should throw the book at those healers that don't is a TERRIBLE design. I picked up a healer....to heal! Not be stared at because my malefic spam is being watched.

SE adding more DPS spells is the wrong design, not when it's sooooo easy to heal people back to full HP, and i'm sitting at 9000+ mp for most fights. Am I to believe that if I have all this MP I should be using it on DPSing? Maybe in a Savage/Ultimate fight....but not in DF. This is probably why I find progging to be the most enjoyable while healing....so many mistakes to fix, while trying to do my cards. This is why I completely believe and accept that Sage is a test....for what healing will become in the future. No longer passively waiting for boo boo's but actively contributing WHILE supporting. No longer needing to shift back and forth between healing and damage spells. You do BOTH effectively. Sage in my mind is test of where healing could go.

Enemy damage output NEEDS to be scaled up a tad in DF to pull healers out of this "guess i'll DPS now" hell they are in. Otherwise you are going to see healer less...and less in DF out of shear boredom.

Think your missing the point....hitting gravity 500 times is not compelling, that's not fun. That's just....dumb.
I don't play healer in DF because it's not fun....is boring...exhausting....and mind numbing while I wait for my cards to refresh. Because cards are FUN because it involves brain power. *begins casting healer drought on DF*

I mean my god sometimes I tell the tank to just eat AOE's so I have something to keep me awake.

This is why I don't join DF as a healer....besides...if healing was SOOOO braindead easy...then why can't you find any healers?

Your point is clear and extremely flawed. If you don't like spamming Gravity, don't queue as a healer. If you still want to play as a healer, using your buttons and not being a leecher is the minimum you can do. I don't queue as tank, press my AoE buttons three times and then gpose because I'm still keeping aggro and thus still tanking. It's that simple.

Healers and tanks are harder to find than DPS because people don't like responsibilities, just like... In any MMO, ever. Healers are also boring, although the main reason is still the perceived responsibility.

Dungeons are boring but by actively not contributing, you are making the run even longer so you remain bored for longer.
