Asmongold on NSFW mods

It's really not that big of a deal.

I literally never experience these aspects of XIV unless I explicitly go out looking for it, the only other thing that happens is someone complimenting my character in a one-off fairly friendly way. These are also things that have existed throughout every MMO for as long back as I can remember, and there have been numerous attempts by police agencies to break into the spaces (Namely, Goldshire in WoW) to set up Chris-Hansen style sting operations to find predators and I don't believe there was one that turned up anything of substance.

Doing an extensive banwave of people using NSFW mods doesn't really do anything tangibly worthwhile, other than divert the resources people claim to be so stretched and precious to something that won't change anything. NSFW artwork will still exist. NSFW photo manipulations will still exist. ERP will still exist.

SE doesn't pay me to care about their corporate visage, so I don't.

Modding opinions aside, it's really sad that someone would be willing to sell out the entire modding community just to get 5 minutes of fame on some dude that nobody cares about's stream

It is a big deal.

The person being interviewed admitted there were people doing lewd mods of npcs that were minors. That is not a made up thing. Nude mods in generally being flaunted on twitter is a massive deal. Anything bad for SE is bad for the players. You have to be very short-sighted not to see that.

There are people in the past that said a minor was being sexually harassed in game. There are people that said they themselves were (adults and minors). I was also. It's only been 3 times since 3.0, but that is 3 times too many.

A bigger player base adds to resources, not a few NSFW modders being whales. The money SE gets from these NSFW modders is going to be nothing in comparison to what they do and can potentially get from everyone else. If you don't care about SE's image, then you also don't care if SE makes enough money to do even more for the game. People don't want to play the 'lewd' mmo, and SE certainly would not want to be seen that way.

In an ideal world, this would be fine, kept behind closed doors or whatever. However, history shows game companies become responsible for the things their games are capable of. I remember specifically Rockstar getting in trouble because a mod (hot coffee mod) enabled erotic play in one of their GTA games. This caused the game to lose its rating and become an Adults only game, including a ban of the game in some countries.

Most MMOs keep a nude version of characters for modeling purposes (not detailed, like a Barbie). This alone caused minor problems for Guildwars and they had to adjust files to obfuscate their model better.

So, yeah, I think YoshiP has every right to be both concerned and rather strict about it.

It’s not a matter of “oh noes”, it’s a matter of money and sales.

If it can't be fixed as you claim (your claim not mine), then stop doing it. It's that simple.

Stop ERPing with people you don't know, don't harass people, and don't make/play these NSFW mods. Honestly, it's mush less of an issue for a legal adult consenting and providing proof than it is to get minors involved. It's not even close. That is a very poor argument.

Yes, it is bad to paint minors in a sexual light, even if fictional. It also carries legal penalties. You keep trying to distance yourself, but then you have this take where you think it is okay to have a fetish over children.

Like I said, this subject is just a feel good subject to be upset about. It also brings up some harsh memories of my childhood as I said before. We can all say it is wrong and I admit it was wrong on the first or second page. Does anyone have a answer on how to stop kids from being sexual active online? Because you can't.


If you can't stop it, and you understand teens are very sexual active. Doing it with no risk to their body is the lesser evil.

Ya it is kinda my fault, when someone used kids as an excuse to get rid of these mods. I kinda jumped on that.

It isn't really a case of people taking to the moral high ground. Certain actions are almost universally looked upon with contempt and disgust in civilised, lawful societies - and quite rightly, too.

To say nothing of the fact that everybody playing Final Fantasy XIV agreed to abide by a specific set of rules. If those rules are breached, then there's a real risk of punishment and based on the severity of the action then things could very well be elevated and sent to the appropriate authorities.

Members of the development team have also spoken out in the past and informed people not to sexualise characters who are not of legal age and also to not make use of inappropriate mods - because such things could risk the game's very existence.

Rules only matter if they are enforced. Since they can't enforced this. The rule does not matter. That is the simple truth.

Second law side communication with a minor for immoral purposes is a law, but if the person lies about her age, . You understand just how hard it would be to have these charges held?


When I said taking a moral high ground it is more on the lines of being outrage about something that you can't change, and have to accept like it or not.

Maybe you should tell your friend here not to talk about it. No, it is not on the parents that their kids are playing a T game and are a T.

Anyway, I am talking about individual responsibility. Of course they won't do it. If they did, they would not have made or used these mods in the first place, because no responsible person would do that. I don't actually expect any of them to do the right thing, but they argue nothing can be done. However, that is not true. They can simply stop doing it, and most certainly don't post it on Twitter all the time. It shouldn't be about what you think you can get away with, and instead it should be about what is right.

There is a legal way for SE to handle this, but it is a really sucky method, but it could come down to that or worse.

Imagine you invite me to your house to meet your family.

But when I arrive I say "Actually I don't like pants" and take them off.

That's what NSFW modding is.

You are playing a T rated game. Not M nor AO. When you signed up for the game you accepted you are playing a T rated game. If you want adult content go play an adult game.

The reality is this only people that can protect the children are the parents. What do you want SE to do Scan our PC at every login?

We have to face facts kids will be exposed to content on the internet it is up to the parents to make sure they know better but understand the risks if they are not comfortable with said risks then do they need to do something about it.

Also let us not pretend that children can also lore adults by lying about their age showing fake images etc . . .

To me it is pixels and I can't see it.. Someone making a case about if it becomes wildly spread, but um rule 4 stuff and art is i bet even more wide spread. So ehhhh hard to make that case.

I don't think it's any different from doing something like installing NSFW mods to single player games like Skyrim or Sims 4.

That's the issue being discussed here. About how the NSFW community has become so brazen as to be giving interviews to famous streamers.

Go to twitter and type FFXIV, go to images, and there's a very high chance that within the first 10 images there'll be a NSFW one.

It gives a false depiction of what the game is actually like, and can potentially be damaging.

You're not wrong about the NSFW community being more brazen, there'll always be people who abuse a privilege they're given, but the actually responsible people can't do much about it aside from maybe report their accounts if they leave evidence linking to their actual characters.

That being said, that one person doesn't represent the NSFW community, they're just an attention seeking thot who doesn't mind selling out an entire community as long as a few thousand people pay attention to them for a few minutes

SE could implement a file check on boot up to detect any modified assets and prevent a game launch. Third party tools like ACT have a place, but these disgusting mods do not. Players and modders alike should be banned for using and creating them.

This right here sums up this whole situation. Yoshi P has stated not to post NSFW stuff on social media and the like. There's no way to know who has what modded unless they post or stream it. Its easy to ignore people streaming with ACT and the like but that NSFW stuff can and will get people in hot water.

Its not a situation about who has what installed, thats between you and [deity of choice/national cyber security spy network]. Its the fact that its being posted for others to see.

Which would be a pain for all players, if you ever had the pleasure to use the repair option for corrupted files etc. you know it takes a very long time for games etc. to check through all the files and check them with non corrupted ones. Since ofc the launcher would have to compare every file and every texture with the respective not modded texture.

So yeah, it would be an option. But it would come at the prize of all players waiting an hour until the game checked every last file every time they want to boot up the game. xD

Edit: To be fair SE would just have to check the emperors new breeches file and that would filter out probably 99% of all players using mods. ^.^

I think people can and will turn everything they can into lewd content and there's not much SE can do except make a point of roflstomping anyone they catch doing it in a public venue.

Yep, pretty much this. And the important thing to consider is that it's not even just about individual responsibility when it's something that can potentially impact the game as a whole in negative, potentially even legal, ways. It's not about moralizing or saying that only adults can/should see or do things. SE and FF14 in general could be damaged by this if it becomes the widespread image of 14, as YoshiP himself has said. Remember that the biggest news story about 14 post ARR and before the immense success of Shadowbringers was when YoshiP was asked in that Q&A about the "adult" content in the game. That was a pretty major black eye for the game. And Japan also has some rather stringent if strange censorship laws regarding nudity, and I doubt it would matter in Japanese court if it was something some modder made as long as it was attached to the public face of the game.

Twitter has a safe search option. If you disabled that then of course you might see something that's NSFW.

I have played on Balmung sicne it began. I have never seen out right sex in any location (including the quicksand.) I know there is ERP on the server, but it's usually localized to houses or private chat. I have also never gotten any unsolicited tells regarding being propositioned. The statement that Balmung is an ERP server is false. Yes it is an RP server, but to think that it's just sex all the time is a blatant lie.

So all these "naked" people standing in the quicksand or humping each other in the back alley next to the quicksand are in fact just innocent players just enjoying their 2b pants.

I can swear to you if i create an alt over there and go to the back alley or into the quicksand you can see many many players just sitting on each other doing...well...things. xD

I mean yes ofc they do it in group chats which i am thankful for. But yeah as i said, when i played on crystal i also got messaged a lot even tho i am not a erp fan at all.

Sure it's not sex all the time but hey most of the time is enough, i guess. Just check peoples bios. xD Still have a screenshot of one selling erp for gil, as i said just look at the character informations on players in the quicksand. <shrugs>

Edit: What most people here are about isn't that 2 adults shouldn't be allowed to do whatever they want. They are more about that there are many lil underaged sprouts running around in the game and people on Balmung etc. ask frequently total strangers for nasty things and yes i can speak out of experience here. They don't check your age or anything, lol.

I don't think you're looking very hard then. You can usually find a few examples of people blatantly up to non-SFW things in public areas, sure they're in DMs but I'm sure that male Au'ra wearing the emperor's new pants while standing over the female character on her knees isn't DMing her about bible verses.

Man that's one thing that I gotta give to modders though, since there's a mod to just completely remove the 2b pants and replace them with something less of an eyesore.

Like, don't get me wrong, I respect your rights to run around in panties, but sheesh is it annoying having overly sexualized butts while the males are still stuck flat as a board in their nether region

If they're gonna add eyesore clothing for female characters then at least throw us male characters a bone with some less flat briefs or speedos

I can't see what point you are trying to make? Having twitter safe search on/off does not change the fact that those pictures are there when they shouldn't be and that they are damaging to the game.

Exactly, ofc the majority of the servers population isn't at all about erp. But these servers are known as the erp hotspots for a reason. Cause there is much of it going on, really much.

And all erp players are drawn to balmung like moths to the light.

It might be true that we aren't these childrens parents. But we sure are responsible for what we do online and with whom we do it. And if you run around and ask every player if they want to have a good time and lure minors that way into stuff like erp it's your responsibility too. Not to mention that THIS would be illegal in many many countries.

I mean SE and Yoshi have spoken out about of these things are both of questionable legality and how they damage the image of the game. Just admit these mods have no place and should be banned.

They could give the RPers their own separate instance of the cities, which I think would be beneficial for both sides. Without opting in, regular players won't randomly run across them. And can go around more freely in their own towns...


And for the NSFW modding, I think as long as the mods don't alter gameplay in any way or shape and just visually change the game, they should be allowed to be installed. Them being client side means nobody else has to see what kind of mods someone else has installed.
But if people start posting screenshots of their nude mods on any kind of official sites related to the game, then they could start looking at dropping banhammers on those people.

Nah they have a place, it's just out of the public eye and something people should only be able to find out about from someone letting them in on the secret.

Adult themes exist on the internet, in every way shape and form. And all of you with your mock outrage for the kids. How many of you actually have kids? If you don’t you dont have a right to this opinion. As a parent it is my duty to monitor what my child does online, who they interact with and how. It’s my job to teach them not only how to protect themselves but why it is so important. And while yes some inappropriate mods exist in regards to certain characters. From my understanding the majority of that community shuns and denounces those people. So idk do some actual research before talkin out your bottoms.

And for those of you unclear, unless you are all willing to put spy ware on your pc for a product you paid for (spyware that acts more like a virus than a spyware) there is little than can be done aside from them denouncing modding as they have done before. And i doubt anyone who mods final fantasy is making enough money to live off of. So maybe take things from some random streamer with a grain of salt. They dont have to be honest with anything they present to you. They arent regulated

I am really curious where this idea started from. Because there are a lot of ways Square Enix could implement to check for mods that wouldn't require to install a spyware.
