You know, the ironic thing about all that is that the content generally allowed SCH to get away with letting their cohealer do all the healing. I can't count how many raids where it was just better to run 5 DPS by swapping out a healer, and in the ones where that wasn't viable, SCH shined the best as it was the closest thing to an actual DPS while actually having both healing and mitigation.

It's not 'shocking,' it's frustrating. What's frustrating isn't their desire to want healers to focus more on healing, it's their lack of understanding on how to make that actually happening while changing everything BUT the issue. Do you want healers to heal more? The answer isn't neuter their DPS options, it's increase the need for all of these healing resources we have access to. Even if they completely abolished DPS in its entirety, it wouldn't change the fact that healers would just literally stand around and do nothing for the vast majority of content in this game. Do you want healers to heal more? Change that! I can't speak for everyone on the forums who is frustrated and angry about how the healers have fallen, but I would be willing to bet that most, if not all, would gladly welcome a more healing-heavy meta if the combat designers would actually make bosses hurt.

The problem with that is they also don't want progging new content to be exponentially more punishing and don't seem to consider adding mechanic checks that don't do damage as an option, such as damage dealt down debuffs rather than just eating a ton of damage or taking a vulnerability stack.

Tanks used to need dps rotations because of how aggro worked, but now that it's literally just 'turn tank stance on and forget about it' they are pretty much just another DPS that needs to turn on a cd every minute or so, but if they got overhauled into a one single target and one aoe weaponskill, with tons of defensives, you know the whole forum and reddit would burn to ashes, yet that's perfectly fine and acceptable for healers. The double standard is strong here.

We have the same discussion in the dps forum about ranged dps where simplicity shouldn't have the same dps as others, when it s just a matter of enjoyement, if I prefer a harder class I don't wanna do more or less than the other, I just play it because it's enjoyable for me.

I mean, when your fairy is so OP you don't have to use a single heal, or your co healer thinks that because you dont cast a spell you ain't healing and he just spam medica 2, there's not many other things I can do. Our strongest heals as sch are our ogcd because our gcds are very bad, and even when you have double their healing output with barely any overheal, they will still say "I solo healed" because they didn't see a castbar.

This is the exact situation with WHM now. If I play AST in an organized group, or I'm playing WHM with an AST friend, the AST takes the bulk of the healing. It's simple math. AST oGCD's are free and if a GCD heal is needed the WHM loses 300 potency but the AST only loses 250 and can probably proc a Horo Helios or add a Neutral sect on top. The WHM loses the party raid dps by trying to heal. Trimming their dps kit did nothing. They shouldn't be healing (unless it's movement/spare lilies or their handful of free oGCD's in their limited weave spots), it's actually bad.

This is just how ff14 is designed. It's very scripted, therefore there's a lot more mathematical calculation regarding potency and GCD efficiency. Addressing a healers dps taxes for using their toolkit compared to other healers is how you fix one healer leaving the bulk of the healing to another, not cutting their toolkit further.

The devs wanting us to heal more changes nothing in this. If you force a good player to use 50+ GCD heals in a fight, their group is still going to plan mitigation and the healer will map their heals efficiently as they learn the fight, then use the spare GCD's on damage. Even solo heal e12s kills manage to fit in 100+ casts of dps abilities.

Decent players do not prioritize dps over keeping the party alive just because they have more buttons. The bad healers who do, will do so regardless of whether they have 1 button or 5. Taking toys away from the decent players won't fix the bad ones.

But that reveals the baffling ignorance the devs have towards healing in general. SCH doesn't look like it's casting heals cuz it's best heals are oGCDs. It's like the devs are the ignorant dps who think im not healing because they dont see me spamming medica like a tool.

Well don’t shoot the messenger guys but, wasn’t allot of healers on this very forum complaining that the dragon fight before you go to foundation was to hard to heal? If I’m remembering correctly there were a few extremes and raids that healers specifically complained was to hard to heal. So SE adjusted those fights.

Is it right? No it’s not right. Should healers have some more complexity? Yes I believe so but I don’t see it happening. They even adjusted energy drain in a recent patch because the devs saw people using the AF stacks more for dps instead of healing. So all I’m saying is just get use to it. It doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon. They don’t seem to be deviating from what they desire the healers to be.

They won’t please everyone but looking at their data they still see a huge influx of people playing healer so they may think all is fine. I use to main healer and I’ve given up on it. I’m tired of waiting for things to get better. They destroyed Astro and Sch this expansion. I’ve moved on to dps now and I’m pretty happy as a buffing dancer. I wish you guys luck and maybe someday SE will realize they’re healer role approach might need a new set of eyes but I just don’t see that happening.

To be honest, I'm edging towards this same sentiment as well. DPS queues aren't like how they were even during the SB days, much less way back in ARR, so at least the role balance has been addressed, at least for the meantime.

Personally, I've been enjoying playing DRG again so a surprising degree, even though I'm not that good with it, so depending on how EW changes my favourite SCH...well, we'll see.

In the end, SE's priority is to keep the role balance up, and since it feels like they have no intent in increasing the complexity of healers, even just one or two of the jobs, the only answer for those of us who wants a more engaging job might be to change roles entirely.

I was going to make some big changes after completing the 6.0 MSQ (mainly fantasiaing out of Lala for the first time in six or seven years), but changing my primary role might be added to that list if healing doesn't become more engaging.

Want to know the irony of all that is, Sch at the time of Yoshi P saying he doesn't like that Schs were leaving all the work to their co-healer, were the ones healing the most in raids.

Yep shocking ik that Schs were the ones healing the most because their healing cooldowns allowed for the most dps outta both healers in Stormblood. Just baffling how much disconnect there was between players and devs almost like they took feedback about the bad healers who did focus only on dps and did force their co-healer to do everything, you know something we still consider bad to do now, almost like nothing changed at all except making healers more boring when played well.

The shorter DoT timing breaks up the 1 nuke spam more often and being a shorter fight as well makes it drag way less.

I still think it is a problem healers haven't evolved even a little on their dps side despite being encouraged to do dps by the very game for over 70 levels feels like healers have just stagnated as the game has evolved around them.

I don't want to hate on the devs too much when it comes to the healers. Yes, what they did was wrong, but I still believe that they'll make the changes each job desperately needs despite the odds against us. Though I am still keeping my expectations low. I think Deceptus said it best. The devs do listen to their players, but they are very slow to act at times or they completely misread the player base and make decisions based on their misjudgments.

The current situation with healers was completely based off their misjudgment and shortsightedness of the healer community.

You're entirely wrong. The healer changes were an effort to balance the healers, because WHM always gets left in the dumpster at the end of expansions.

Did the healer community even want all these changes to healers? I know a couple Whm in Sb wanted Whm to be on par with Ast and Sch but I really didn't see too many healers begging to heal more when at the time we had god Kefka which is (or was) the hardest fight to heal. Besides a few slyphies I really didn't see it. Also blaming the community for their miss handling of healers is kind of dumb.

Literally nobody asked for SCH to get its entire kit gutted, so no.

The only reason WHM was considerably more popular in 5.0 and even 5.1 was because the other 2 were utterly destroyed

I'd hesitate to make "movement" an explicit weakness. It's how basically every single mechanic in XIV works. You have to move somewhere to dodge a thing. Movement being an explicit WHM weakness is one of the myriad things that's made it such a chore to play in the past. When you have two classes, and one of them has a fake "weakness" that the game never bothers to touch on, and the other has a crippling weakness that the game picks at all the time, then you've wrenched the disparity between those classes pretty wide. WHM has historically had weaknesses that actually come up all the time in this game. AST and SCH haven't, not since early Heavensward for AST. Now, that's not necessarily a problem if you compensate for that disparity elsewhere, but from what I've seen of how Squeenix designs things, they tend to treat weaknesses as if they were all equivalent, wash their hands and call it a day. Even Black Mage, the iconic immobile turret of mages, has received a truckload of movement tools because it's such a bullsh*t thing to do to a class in this game of heavy movement requirements.

I suppose this is really the evidence of the disparity when it comes to attention and concessions that SE is willing to put into the DPS vs Healers. Agreed that movement's always been an issue for WHM and the game works to make WHM suffer almost deliberately because of it. Unfortunately, I'm just not able to come up with things to differentiate WHM without gutting what's little that's left of its job identity.

I already admitted that I am biased in regards to that opinion, but I do think that there should be at least one healer that is accessible to starting players that is easy to play even in the endgame, even if it's no longer true in extreme and savage.

As much as I would hate it, I would accept SCH being turned into the one button boring healer if SE did two things at the same time. The first is make SCH into it's own class that can be picked at character creation (maybe reverse ACN so that it's a healer instead of DPS if not straight out just create a new starting class for SCH). Second would be to make both AST and SGE into complex, fun, and interesting jobs to play with unique healing styles, not just a single gimmick to separate them like WAR and DRK.

If we could get those two things, while I'd cringe pretty badly, losing SCH's old complexity and interesting gameplay forever would be a sacrifice I'd be willing to make.

As much as I love SCH, I'm not that adverse to leaving it behind for greener pastures. The problem is that the only actually green pasture I see nowadays is all marked with red icons. I used to like WAR and DRK on the side, but now both of them have been gutted just like the healers, and GNB hasn't been doing it for me for some reason.

I truly don't believe complexity must equate to performance, nor do I think having an easy-to-play healer means that WHM cannot be complex. The new lily system ShB introduced is already the perfect foundation necessary to create a rewarding healer that has options for complexity, but a much higher safety net.

First and foremost, I believe complexity should come at the cost of DPS contribution regarding healers. How well or not-so-well you perform should directly hit your personal DPS and support contributions, and not so much your ability to heal. For example, I would love to reevaluate SCH's resources to make the faerie gauge your resource for OGCD heals and your Aetherflow your resource for DPS (SE won't do this, but I think it would really help clean up how SCH plays). Aetherflow should be generated in excess from proper use of barriers and support tools that requires planning and understanding of fights to maximize your Aetherflow gains and thus maximize your DPS.

Meanwhile, WHM should get access to more ways they can generate lilies and nourish the blood lily, but still have access to Solace and Rapture, meaning a certain amount of your DPS is practically guaranteed on a casual scale as healing directly rewards you with DPS forgiveness. There's a higher skill ceiling for how you nourish the blood lily outside of your normal lily gains, but a certain amount of it is given to you simply from healing. Low skill floor, high skill ceiling. That's the key. It's easier said then done, of course, but that is a combat designer's job after all.

This is correct, and why I've swapped to DPS this expansion. You not only feel like you have a real impact on your party's performance, but your job is actually fun to play. And perhaps even more importantly, becomes more fun to play the better you get at playing it.

Reiterating here what I've said elsewhere. To oversimplify the reason I think healers are as boring as they are in this expansion: Two of the axioms job design operates by are "WHM has to suck" and "All comps have to be viable". If both must be true, then in order to make Suck competitive with non-Suck, you have to make the non-Suck jobs suck. That's the direction we were always headed since Stormblood. There's a weird world WHM operates in where it's got all these seemingly holy writ stupid rules that shackle its job design. It can't have utility. It can't be complex. It has to be newbie-friendly. It has to be so easy to understand that a level 30 Monk could figure out its 80 kit. It can't shield too much, that's not its identity. It can't buff, that's not its identity. It can't do too much personal damage, that'd scare the DPS. It can't have Proshell exclusivity, that might make it "maaaaaaandatory". It can't have Graniteskin, that would be "tooooooooo poooooowerful". It can't have decision making, that's too frustrating for new players.

I've always been of the mind, why don't we just...not do those things? Perhaps it could have an identity that isn't pinned down by all of these things that it's not. Maybe it could be designed in a way that's fun and interesting, where you could technically spam Medica in easy content but you could juggle some buff systems, make some decisions, figure out cool ways to level up my understanding of the class like using Swiftcast to fish for procs on Red Mage that don't actually hurt me if I don't know about them, but can drastically improve my output if I do? Squeeze a bit of frigging fun out of the role. No more of these entirely (or in Scholar's case, almost entirely) passive job gauges. Get a job designer who understands how this game's combat system works and actually likes playing healers. No more of this job design from people who clearly main DPS and design healers like a DPS main who doesn't really care about healing past "keeps me alive".

People get frustrated with wipes, so SE obviously needs to avoid them as much as possible in standard duties, but how do you do that while satisfying healers?

Anyways, maybe a more proper distribution of responsibility when it comes to wipes is what's needed to fix things, but that's something for a more dedicated thread.

Definately though, if we healers were moved to a more support position instead, it could actually fix a lot of things without SE making our base kit more complex and difficult to use for beginners. Imagine if all they did for AST was reduce the card draw CD to 15s? Frankly, that alone might make me switch to AST again and make it my main like back in parts of HW.

I mean, I didn't mind the loss of the dps spells at all and, in fact, love the thought of getting new healing spells. Ultimately, I want to have to use heals more; don't have much interest in being a discount dps. I just don't mention it much because some people will really jump down your throat if you're not all about having more dps spells on healers.

I'd like more Damage oriented spells, but I don't want more DoTs. Unless the DoTs facilitate another mechanic, they're among the most boring buttons to push, not helped by how FF14 coagulates all DoT potency together.

There's plenty of ways of making whm unique again, same with sch, ast and sage. By focusing on making unique playstyles for them while keeping the numbers reasonably similar. Each one would have another tertiary method of making them play differently. Sch is a pet job, Astro has its cards, whm having gotten its self buffing stolen by sage, could have debuffs, bringing elemental wrath on the enemy. More blood for the blood lily!

In a healer there are 2 core elements, damage and healing. Damage is broken down into personal damage vs raid damage and healing is regens vs shields. You can further break damage into another style: burst vs uptime
Each healer is already apparently being dealt one of the two healing styles (I say apparently as whm and astro still had shield esque effects in the trailer) and they should also get the others. Each job should have at least 1 piece of raid damage buff, with the raid dps focused healers getting more, while the low raid dps healers get more personal damage

Only the devs treat healers as an afterthought being so dps focused. Notice how gunbreaker and warrior got to have dps skills shown off? Meanwhile healers didn't yet the number 1 complaint about healers in this expansion is that they are 1 button dps. They took months to even get a vague idea for sage, but the moment they got to make a dps job, they finalised it in a few weeks at most.

The game I came from (Swtor) handles healers pretty darn well. Over there my preferred healer was sorcerer for the versatility and infinite force (mana). This meant it would never ever ever have to sacrifice deeps for healing as mana began to run low.

Swtor healers themselves have a fluctuating dps style rotation with active and passive combos that create different effects when one heal is weaved into another. Most of the heal spells and nearly all of sorcerer heals were gcd heals or barriers with instant cast ones mixed in.

Here are some neat examples! Sorcerer has a barrier skill similar to divine benison that can be placed on party members. It is a instant cast gcd so can be placed on nearly every party member if you wish to with one catch, the debuff. You can only shield someone once every thirty seconds. The barrier interacts with your mana regeneration mechanic, when it expires it removes stacks of force weakness accumulated by regenerating mana (force). When wearing certain armor or using tacticals the barrier can also aoe heal on application.

You have one smaller casted heal and one larger casted heal buuuuut these combo so if you cast one the other becomes instant and will guarantee that it does critical healing. It does not have a chance to do this it is like dps class's 1,2,3 combo.

You have one ground placed aoe heal ability on sorcerer that interacts with the above skills. Cast the big boy heal and your ground aoe also becomes instant cast giving you rotational choice. Do I use the instant cast single target heal or make my aoe instant.

Your fourth healing ability works kinda like the fay union skill only cast by yourself. You tether to one party member applying a most powerful hot. This "heal beam" as I enjoy calling it interacts with your mana regenerating ability each time it critically hits giving you stacks you can spend for additional force points and no force weakness debuff.

The sorcerer's fifth healing ability is sorta boring, it is only standard hot exactly like white mage regen or is it? With the appropriate armor set any healing applied to a target you have used regen on can cause the regen to apply additional ticks of healing and gives mana back each refresh. With passives your regen also applies 10% damage reduction to the target.

Wandering mend (your best party heal) is their sixth healing ability. Imagine a world where excogitation when proced would bounce to another party member each time that person took damage. That is how this lovely fricken ability works! It interacts with your regen too! If you apply wandering mend to someone who has regen ticking on them then wandering mend will bounce its maximum number of times without waiting for incoming damage. This spell can be used for burst aoe healing or incremental damage simultaneously.

The Metaphysical Mender tactical with the description of; Damaging an enemy with Volt Rush causes your ally closest to the enemy to be healed, scaling with how many Empowered charges you have. Each charge of Empowered reduces the amount of Force that Volt Rush consumes by 30%.

This is not entirely true, it was actually buffed so that it will select the lowest health target for healing.

So we have healer rotations for our heals and dps skills that apply healing and never once did I see anyone complaining about having to deal damage over there as a healer. The difference between a bad sorcerer and a well played one is not insubstantial. Perhaps in a world most perfect we could get that in FF14 land but will not hold the breath, I would suffocate if I did.
