Well, BDO also has optional subscription, as far as I know.

Welp, looks like the salty concern trolls are about. Regular as clockwork, every time an Item releases on the Mogstation.
How dare a company sell things, the Horror.
Never liked "But in other place is worst. So it's ok". Because someone could argue "but in that other game X and Y compared to FFXIV" (and I already know a possible answer: go play that game).
So far, the balance of stuff that you can get in-game justify subscription + paid expansions (at least to me). The moment stops being like that I will move on. Will see what happens over time.
BDO is a $10 buy-to-play game.
FFXIV is a $60 game with a $12-15 monthly subscription.
You could buy $180 dollars worth of microtransactions in one year in BDO and still only be paying the same amount of money you pay just to access FFXIV for the same amount of time.
You know what else is in bad taste? Comparing the price of a Funny Video Game Mount to the commodification of a human need by greedy megacorporations which results in the deaths of thousands of children forced to drink sludge after bottled water companies take all their potable water. Like, yeah, it's a pretty expensive little Fake Pixel Carriage, but got dang is that a horrendous allegory.
And here I was hoping for a highly requested mount since 2.0 would get added in game to be earnable through gameplay. :(
Not really feelin' the rising celebratory spirit now.
It is... and offers significantly less content as a result. They've had six default outfits since the game's original JP release some seven years ago. And most of those outfits are color swaps or downright ugly. Needless to say, if you want your character to look nice, you're spending money. Likewise, their entire furniture catalog is all locked behind a paywall. Designing a house in BDO that looks remotely comparable to some of the designs on HousingSnap for XIV would set you back hundreds of dollars.
Now of this covers how comically P2W PvP is in that game.
You can certainly play the game for free but you'll notice very quickly how much less they're offering as a result.
Would we? Nearly every single mount, minion and glamour outfit they add through in-game rewards, events and etc. would suddenly have a price attached to them. Mogstation prices may, in fact, go up to compensate for lacking a sub now. Black Desert charges significantly more for outfits. Why wouldn't SE if they weren't generating a guaranteed income? You also have to consider what our sub fee actually covers. The only reason they're able (or willing) to release content every four months is due to our subscription. With a fluctuating income, they may opt to abandon content like maps, raids (of all difficulties), trials, gpose and all assortment of things. There's a reason FTP games update far less frequently.
The fact that it coincides with The Rising event, celebrating the anniversary of a Realm Reborn, and every single one of us starting our journey in that carriage is just the icing on the cake. The Rising event itself putting heavy emphasis on there being things that are worth more than personal gain and the endless pursuit of more money is so ironic I have to wonder if it wasn't on purpose.
I'm not going to buy it. It just doesn't look good at all, for that kind of money i'm expecting particle effects >_> It probably doesn't even play its own theme on top of it
Devs give free 4 person mount as a car
Community : cool, thanks, awesome
Devs add a $36 4 person mount months later
Community : REEEE, P2W, Cancel my sub brb.
I love the car.
This new mount does feel like it would fit in with the lore and should have been an in-game achievement mount considering the Rising event.
I think some people would care less, if it was something like the Peacock mount.
But whatever, Mogstation gonna mogstation as long as people are willing to pay out.
Depends on the business model.
Also, I will not consider BDO a good example. I will say GW2 or ESO will be a better comparison here.
Like it or not FFXIV already has similar services to many B2P/F2P games, in some cases even a worst implementation. For example, in GW2 you pay it once to expand your inventory while in FFXIV we need to rent it each month.
What if someone doesn't care about Nier: Automata? This argument always lacks perspective. I'll cite my best friend. She only plays Kingdoms Hearts, Pokemon and Final Fantasy games. You can swear up and down to her how amazing Witcher 3, Mass Effect or Nier are. She isn't going to care because they simply don't interest her. I bought her the Ruby Carbuncle for her Birthday, and she used that mount practically every time she logged in. That mount had more value to her than Nier: Automata ever would.
People have different interests and value things differently. What you consider ridiculous and overpriced, they may not. And there isn't anything wrong with that.
Honest just rather sad this wasn't a reward from a long quest chain or the lead into the next xpack or even heck I dunno.. updating veteran rewards or even a RaF.
I get it, the rig took probably a lot of work.. but considering they pretty much had the model for years and I can't wait to see vids on how wonky the animations for the connections to the cart turn out to be... hard pass for me.. =/
I get they want and need money for the server but I feel like the releases on the shop are costing more and more.. while they could easily sweet talk people into buying more with some lowered prices.
edit:
Or another option, finish the GC ranks and make it a reward from there? Dunno. Not canceling my sub over it. But sadly even with a sale it's not a mount I'll be adding to my collection. Maybe if they had the option like it detected your company chocobo and used that model or even changed the colors from the yellow to that of your GC.
I was hoping for ishgardian restoration, or hell maybe one designed with the GCs in mind and put them in the rewards list for that.
And if they are really using this cash shop money for the game's servers, then why can't they freaking move the NA servers to a more central location like every other mmo and not have us route through that awful NTT node that crashes every time someone THINKS about going on the internet?
Yeah I had just edited my post for the GC ranks after I thought. Ishgard would have been a fine idea too for one of those crazy 500k points plus rewards haha.
but.. this is what we got instead. =/ *shrug* Just found a vid on the animation and I'm not overly thrilled, it's not bad but it's a bit more stiff than I'd like for the price tag.
hmmm, this one seems to take longer to receive than usual. Still haven't receive it yet.
Mount is overpriced no matter how you try to argue it.
The carriage is $36 while the whale, which is ALSO a FOUR seat mount, is $30. Pretty sure in terms of modeling the whale would've been more work since it has more moving parts on the mount itself. Chocobo carriage already flies(well hovers off the ground) and the flying chocobo modeling has been in-game since HW.
I get that inflation is probably driving prices up a tad but it'll get to the point where people can't afford it and then cash shop will be worthless due to it.

For some that are curious about the description.
Edit: Uses the chocobo riding music as the mount theme.
Hmmm. LOVE the mount...
Dunno about 35 bones though..
30...maybe
Eh, I'll most likely get it at some point.
Don't buy it then?
Okay to clarify something here - software development companies are supposed to give their employees 10% of their time each week for a personal project. This is where a lot of Google's experimental stuff came from, and it's where a lot of Square Enix's "free time" projects come from as well.
Not gonna open the can of worms that is the Japanese work ethic where 12 hour days are the norm, but "free time" in this context means "a task that I was not directed to do by my supervisor."
It's days like this I'm happy I have hardly any friends in game. There are rarely four of us together out in the open world. >>;
I'll have to try my luck at hitchhiking..see if I can snag a carriage ride or two.
