Remove Gender-Locked Class/Weapon Poses

Just wanna say that the issue with giant swords and why they're so hard to swing IRL is because the weight distribution is loaded into the blade. If you make the handle much longer, and somewhat wider, than it would be easier to lift and to swing. Would still get you killed trying to use it though, since you wouldn't be able to swing it all that fast lol

Most of the FFXIV great swords do have very long and wide handles, but usually I don't think they measure up still for either purpose, if real world physics were going to be a thing. That said, there are plenty of smaller great swords in the game like the Diamond Great sword or the earlier ones like the GC Estramacon and Zweihanders and stuff. Still a bit big, but every weapon in this game is unrealistically large and unwieldy. Like I mean, just look at the Sandungs "daggers," or the Ancient "sword."

If you want or expect realism, this is not the game for you.

what it will probably turn into: STOP TRYING TO DELETE SEX

Honestly I would love to have more poses in general. This would be a good start. Particular ones that I would love to have are the female katana pose and the great sword pose. I find the male katana pose to be really dumb looking, and it even gets dunked on as stupid in the SAM questline lol.

This is another one of those things where if it existed the other way around (both genders had both poses and someone suggested dividing them one to each gender to decrease homogenization), there'd be outcries of "lol that's bait, troll thread" and that suggestion would be flamed and ridiculed.

However, since it exists people will defend it to the death merely because it exists, so they assume it's a good thing somehow.

I'm perfectly fine with restrictions based on gender and race. Be this poses, animations, or even glamour.
On that line I've been wanting more RSE for a long time. Doesn't seem like it's going to happen though.

I just want more poses, full-stop.

Whether they have to implement them as emotes, idles, whatever - I'm at the point that trying to take character screenshots is feeling repetitive because I already used all the good ones three times over.

A few more emotes like the current "strike a pose" one would be great, whether they're character-specific or universal.

That's a mood. I've been going through the animations I have with a fine-tooth comb to find individual frames that are worth using because I've used them all so much already. It would be nice to have something besides a book or new facial expression to use.

If we're going to bring realism into the equation. Delete Dark Knight now as neither gender could realistically hold a great sword that size and actually wield the thing. In fact, weapon smiths have made real life replicas of Cloud and Sephiroth's swords and the proportions are absurd. Cloud's sword weighed 75 lbs. That's a little more than a third the weight of the average American male. Not only would you severely damage your wrists and back attempting to swing around something that heavy on a consistent basis, the sheer force if you actually could muster up the strength would nearly break your arms.

Put simply, great swords are the embodiment of "rule of cool." There is absolutely no realism to their existence. At least not the ones in most fantasy genre.

This is another reason why I really want locks removed as much as possible. With SE's resources being finite it feels like a waste to create something and then keep it from being used. New character-specific emotes would be an improvement over now but it would always be more work or less variety than having universal options.

Meh. Science shows men have higher average strength in both areas than women do. Yes even the legs

I think you mean centre of balance which has nothing to do with strength except indirectly for things like gymnastics rings. Woman need a lot more upper body strength than a man to do the same moves due to their centre of balance being farther away from the horizontal plane of the rings.

This even makes a difference in mundane things like sitting in a chair. Ask most women and they will tell you that they always either spot the exact position of the seat of the chair visually or with a touch before sitting down in it because if they miss the seat their centre of mass is already below the seat and they have almost no chance to catch themselves and will end up on the floor. Ask a man and they probably don't even think about anything like that and don't think twice about just sitting down in a chair without knowing exactly where the seat of it is because if they miss that have the entire length of their torso before their centre of mass moves below the seat and it's an easy reflex to just catch themselves by adjusting their centre of mass to be over the seat.

I highly doubt this difference in centres of balance translates to how well someone can lift a large sword, however. A large sword like that would just be a test of strength, not centre of balance.

All of this is rather moot, however, since this is a fantasy game and the swords we are talking about aren't anything close to being realistic anyway. I can guarantee my scrawny male mi'qote would not be able to lift any DRK sword like that if realistic physics were at play. Heck, I personally wouldn't be able to do it.

They are obviously not going with any sort of notion that women are weaker, because that would call into question whether or not they could even be Dark Knights or be able to perform on the same level as male characters. If that were the case that doesn't explain other poses.

This is a non sequitur. Of course they use real human beings as a reference for character design. But there is no reason that should dictate what they are capable of in game. If it did our characters wouldn't be able to do 90% or more of the things they do. None of the characters in the game are human beings. Hyur are a stand in for the typical human race common in fantasy literature and games, but they are not human. All playable characters have some innate magical aptitude, and all playable classes and jobs require this to some degree.

I think it had more to do with what felt more appealing for each of the genders from the viewpoint of the artists than that it had to do with realism.

I respect their artistic freedom, I think they have the right of creativity and how they imagine the world to be and I already like the way it is presented, I like it that there is a gender difference giving flavor to the world.

Aside from that, if there are additional gender specific poses to be added with such creativity as we have seen, it's very welcome.

Generally speaking I think that it's fine to have gender-locked stuff, especially when there's a reason for it like in Vindictus how the '' classes '' are actual characters and not just classes.
But yeah when it comes to poses I think that you should have all of the options, I really want the DRK one on my Viera but I am fine with or prefer the rest.
I think that it's an RP thing in general too because they sorta convey different personalities and such.
The male DRK pose is a bit edgier and the female DRK pose looks a bit more honorable and knightly imo.

Which you prefer depends on how you imagine your character to be.
Personally I'd prefer the male one, but then overall I prefer the female poses.

I think you're looking into it a bit too hard xD.

FFXIV isn't a realistic game and there's very little in the game that is that heavily influenced by reality.
I think that what you meant to say is that '' all fantasy is based in real life ''?
I disagree about that, I think that's a very broad statement to make and I don't think that applies to FFXIV.

This is all about what is established in the setting, arguments about this in general kinda bother me a bit.
In Tera for example I have no problems accepting metal bikinis because it's treated as normal and no one reacts to it as weird and armor isn't even truly treated as something of that great importance.
Against a very significant portion of enemies that you fight it wouldn't even make a difference and could even be counter-productive.
It'd be strange in Mount and Blade tho, because it'd contradict the established setting and what the game is aiming for.

And in FFXIV women being soldiers is just an established norm and they're shown as being equally as capable as the men.
A woman swinging an axe twice her size is just normal here.

Please! I've been asking for this for so long. I wouldn't care if they didn't lock iconic poses behind gender. It's bad enough that female Dragoons have stupid belly windows in their AF gear, but I also can't do the iconic dragoon pose? That's really dumb.

Not to mention that Samurai or Katana wielders in Japanese media that are more '' edgy '' like that already exist lol.
Gintoki in Gintama is still basically a Samurai and he carries his wooden sword on his shoulder like that quite a lot, a lot of characters do really.
And I mean is Zenos a Samurai? I think that's kinda pushing it really, Samurai as a class is more of a broad concept of what they are and their powers it's not something that we're super hard locked into lore and RP-wise.
It's not like the Japanese depict the Samurai '' accurately '' in Japanese media, which sorta gets into what the other guy arguing about fantasy and realism too.

Japanese fantasy is very different from Western fantasy, Western media is usually about holding up a mirror to real life and history while Japanese media is usually the exact opposite.
It's why Anime is so crazy and over the top by most Western standards, because Japanese fiction is more about how you can distort reality rather than reflect it.
You can see it in their classical art too, it's deliberately not realistic.
I see this a lot too when Westerners complain about '' realism '' in Japanese media, usually the comment sections fill up with Japanese people mocking Westerners and acting like we're children who can't tell the difference between real life and fantasy. In the West it often turns into a big circlejerk where people are nitpicking everything.

Where are you getting this "ask most women and they'll tell you..." thing from? Was there some kind of study on this? It sounds improbable.

Walk in front of chair; sit; adjust if necessary. What kind of tiny chair are they aiming for that they could miss it entirely if they don't mindfully confirm the position of it first?

If anything it might be something people do subconsciously. But it still seems implausible along gendered lines.

This was bothering me to no end. I have no idea where you pulled that number from but neither men nor women could be in any way effective with a sword that ridiculously heavy. Two-handed or Greatswords were typically between 4.4-7.1 lbs (2-3.2 kg) with some being as light as 3.3lbs (1.5kg) and anything above 8.8lbs (4kg) was considered a ceremonial or parade greatsword and not used in actual combat.

What Savagelf is saying is funnily enough untrue if we are to go by irl standards which he or she wants to argue from, but it's probably true in the fantasy world of the game lol.
Our characters are basically Guts from Berserk.

They were supposedly also used to break up pike formations or by bodyguard mercenaries to engage multiple opponents at once and keep them occupied and they required a completely different fighting style than normal arming or longswords, because their sheer length made it impossible to use normal sword techniques.


Funnily enough the male DRK weapon pose is actually somewhat accurate. Since greatswords were too long for a hip scabbard they were carried over the wielder's shoulder.

No one is saying that they should be removed, people are saying that they'd like to be able to use all of them instead of half.
I don't see the problem with this, like I mentioned with the DRK for example the stances both communicate different personalities neither of which is gendered.
Greatswords used to be carried on the shoulder a lot of the time but the DRK male stance still looks edgier to me and like your character is brooding, while the female stance looks more knightly to me.
Both of which can work fine for either gender, it just depends on how you imagine your character.

Personally I don't imagine my DRK as being very knightly I imagine her as being edgier and with more of an emphasis on the '' dark '' in the '' dark knight ''.
So I would like to use the male one on my character, but someone else might want more of an emphasis on the '' knight '' part and they want the female stance.

Also, you were the one who brought up weight lol.

i brought up the weight argument because of out side knowledge i brought up actors because what may not feel comfort to female actress may feel comfortable to male. this work against have it be add i brought up the fact that it take great deal of money and time to add or remove which what some have argue find postion equal comfortable to female actress may be worth more. the dark knight more anti hero kind a hero that work for shadow use less honor mean to get want need done done. for example why not have female character put point on sword on ground rest on it or something i away open to new emotions i just not sure you really can apply the male to female without it look bad or have to called ifn actor to act those emotion out to make them look nature.

Y'know, one of the easiest ways to discount the "but men are stronger" thing is to ACTUALLY look in the game. I went into Character Creation ready to write down the initial stats for Male and Female Characters and, you know what happened? They're the same.

A midlander Male has 22 STR, while a Midlander Female ALSO has 22 STR. A Highlander Male has 23, as well as a Highlander Female. I got as far as Duskwight before I got bored with going back and forth just for the same numbers.

The only thing in FFXIV that changes your character's starting attributes isn't Race+Gender. It's Race+Clan, but at least in XIV it means there's NO difference in Strenght between males and females (note: I went back to check, this applies even to AU'RA, which means the dainty little lizard girls can lift as much as their taller counterparts, Raen have an initial STR of 19, while Xaela 23). EVEN going by a "center of mass" argument, this is a FANTASY game, where no HUMAN should be able to do a FRIGGIN FRONTLFIP with a near 2 meter long hunk of metal in their arms and yet we do so easily.

And even then it's taking an extreme example for something that doesn't even need it: DRG's pose makes it so terribly diffficult to point your spear at the ground instead of leaning on it? Is a Y chromosome needed to hold chakrams differently? or knives? or a Celestial Globe that floats in mid-air anyway?

Just let us choose between the poses, or add more poses AND include the opposite sex's among them

I have a lot of experience with both bodybuilding and power lifting myself and have probably met more people involved in it than most people will ever even see in their entire lives.
And in my experience usually the people who really care about the biological differences are people on the outside who aren't even involved at all.

I mean there are people who are just in complete denial about it too, but for the most part people who actually do this stuff tend to compete more against themselves than other people and cheer each other on.
And men in these circles are very supportive of women and just happy to see them get involved.
But then you jump online and people are all being armchair experts about it.

If anyone should care about this it's me and people that I know, but for some reason we just don't.
But people online sure seem to obsess about it quite a bit.
Meanwhile I am just here playing my cute Viera swinging a massive sword and punching dragons so hard in the face that they explode lol.
