The Dictionary is flawed from both a usability point of view as well as a functional point of view. People want terms added, but we don't need terms added. You will NEVER EVER insert every term necissary. Hence no one uses it for communication.

Pressing TAB should start the lookup process, not complete the preceeding characters. You press TAB and then start typing what you want to insert. As you type the list narrows until it lists an appropriate match. For translating, it needs to be smarter. It needs to know that "help me out" and "i need help" are synonymous. The translate to the exact same term.

Right now, the dictionary is using code written by people whom speak only one language. And it's clear not much thought has gone into it. In FFXI, it was seriously flawed. In FFXIV it's still seriously flawed. Right now it's a poor auto-completion tool.

This. If we don't know the first word of the phrase or whatever, we can't find it unless we know what category to look in. It needs to be much more flexible with simple search functionality.

Also, as someone else said, some words have multiple meanings that can be very different. "Mine" is one that comes to mind. I don't know if that refers to a place underground or someone's ownership of something. If it isn't in a phrase that makes the meaning clear, it needs some other way to differentiate it from other similar words. Maybe there could even be simple example sentences that can show the meaning. Whatever. Just something. Please.

The PS3 already HAS a dictionary with a sh*tload of words. And are you thinking this through? Take a look at an underpowered device like this digital pocket dictionary and PLEASE tell me that you do understand that the PS2/PS3 is NOT LIMITING THE DICTIONARY! That thing is less powerful than the original NES!

I definitely agree that the Auto Translate Dictionary is flawed and definitely needs serious improvements, but your statement above is false.

I know plenty of players that use it all the time, *every* day. I've been using it since Day 1 of this game, as have plenty of strangers that I've run across or heard in /shouts in Leve Parties, EXP Parties, etc.

I've gotten crafting & partying requests from JP players and NA / EU players who approached me the first time (out of the blue) to help craft stuff or help with activities. It's been used to form successful Guildleve Parties and EXP Parties or Spiritbond Parties countless times.

So, it *is* being used for communication (albeit somewhat poorly), but it's gotten players from around the world together for experiencing FF XIV in a variety of ways.

Does it need to be better? Absolutely. :)

But saying that "no one uses it" is false.

I appreciate Square Enix having an Auto Translate Dictionary (from XI and now this game). It's been a life-saver numerous times, and my friends and I (JP and NA and EU) appreciate having it. But I hope we get it vastly improved and beefed up.

Absolutely, I use it all the time too.

Suggestions for the auto translate, in Bayohne's template =P :

More strategy-focused terms, for example:

• "Stand where I am!"
• "Keep this enemy busy!"
• "Run this enemy around!" (or something that gets the "kiting" strategy across)
• "Move in closer!"
• "Keep your distance!"
• "Focus on this target:"
• "I'm having trouble understanding."
• "Can you repeat that?"
• "I'll take care of it!"
• "Thank you for the information!"

More party-gathering terms:

• "Any language is fine!"
• "We are trying to practice."
• "Any class is welcome."
• "Experienced players only."
• "Newbies are welcome."
• "Do you mind if we try a new strategy?"
• "Please use the class you are best at."

Enemies and weaponskills

• If /translate is added, please allow enemy names to be auto-translated this way.
• Alternatively, some way to save specific enemies for future use (you can kinda do this now by saving a macro with the auto-translate after seeing the enemy).
• Add enemy skills and spells to the auto-translate. You can have it so that any enemy that is in your auto-translate "bank" also gets its skill names added to the bank, too. So if Coincounter is in your auto-translate list, Eye of the Beholder, 10 and 100-ton swings and Swipes, Animal Instinct, and Glower will all be added automatically, and removed once he leaves your auto-translate list.

I have 2 Japanese players in my Linkshell and they are a blast to play with and speak decent enough english, but strategy is a bit difficult to get across since it's usually very specific. This stuff will help out quite a bit and there may be more multilingual shells if this stuff gets added.

Still despite having this I would rather have better auto-translate options. One that would be super helpful is "What language do you speak?" since we have various ls members that speak different languages and could probably get one of them to explain something in a tell if needbe :x

I don't know if I'm alone in this, but I just wish there were more social things rather than keeping it gameplay specific. Imagine if you could ask people how they are today, or where they are from, or what they would like to do? My suggestions...

I agree, please keep adding to this. A lot of BASIC words very much needed for communication are missing. Also fix the problem of words that are in the translation disapearing such as quests. Example you cannot translate all the camps. I think it was fixed a little but I am unable to translate quests I have already beaten, I cannot translate a camp I have not visited for a certain amount of time. If the word/words/location/quest is in the game let it be translatable regardless. Only problem I see is people will see quest names for quests they have not reached but who really cares its not that much of a spoiler... all the quests are just go here, kill x, return to npc anyway LET ME SAY THEM

did we put in "I am bringing this <monster> to you!"? A pulling auto translate? god. we need that. <Fishing> <t> <call> I don't think that got the message across very well.

Haha perfect idea! Phantasy Star Online and Universe had a feature just like this. You could choose from a regular list or from a list at the bottom that was in response to the last translation said. You could specify it to a certain player or to everybody. SE's dictionary does better job I think, but having the feature to have a preset list of words to use in response of what they ask would be great.

JPN: <Hello!>
AMR: <Hello!>
JPN: <Ifrit> <Do you know the battle?>

The American player could then respond with a set that would show <I'm an expert at this!>, <I'm still learning the battle.>, or <I'm sorry, I am new at this.> as response instead of having to sift through the entire dictionary to answer it.

Oh, and I would love it if there were translations for both "Oops..." and "Uh oh." :D Some comedy options would be great for breaking the ice after the traditional epic fail that I like to think everyone has from time to time. "So, that went well, didn't it?" "That's the last time I play with my feet."

"Oops!" is actually in-game already... a JP player used it when they died to a random Guardian of the Grove.

Yes please! You have no idea how many times I've said "Undergarment" instead of "Understood" due to how badly I'm used to it showing up first.

New Terms:

• "Home Point" and maybe "Please set your home point (here)."

For whatever reason we got an auto-translate for "home key", but apparently none for "home point". Maybe the same term is used in all languages, but I can't really know that unless I speak those languages. In which case I wouldn't need the auto-translate in the first place.

I would like to see something like, "I'll follow you", or "Take the lead". As well as, "What should I do?".

"I'll follow you" is in-game already.

Ughhh yes. Most JP at least seem to understand when I say "Set HP@ (camp name)", and I've seen a bunch of them say "{Warp} > (Camp Name)". Speaking of which, "Warp" needs to be changed into "Return"

wait wait. wait wait wait wait. in what server does bayohne play?

I only read 2-3 pages of comments so I don't know if anyone said this.

I am fine with the [item] to only have limited list of what we see or have in inventory. Because when I want to translate my Cotton Doublet Vest or something, I don't want to have to scroll through 100+ "Cotton XXX" items just to find what I really want.

Back in FFXI, there is a text command /translate "Xxxxxx Yyyyyy" which makes the auto-translator add that specific item in the translation list, allowing you to use auto-translation system to produce the translated word in your conversation. If we can have that, it would solve the problem of people needing to say some item name that's not currently in their list.

I thought of some new ones for getting a party together:

• "Do you know anyone that would like to Join?"
• "We need this job:"
• "I am alone."
• "We have this many members:"

The last 2 are due to something I've been noticing lately in several Japanese shouts. They will say they are @5, but if I join the party it seems to be a 50/50 chance that they had 5 members or they had 5 open slots. Unless they get used to shouting "@ 5/8" or something similar like most NA players, the latter two would be useful to have. I'm pretty sure I've passed up a few shouts that were @1 that might have only needed one member...

I just tried to do Chorus Of Cataclysm battle witha japanese party, and not understanding japanese too much (I know hiragana somewhat) and them not understanding english, made the explanation of strategy rather hard. There's simply not enough terms to convey the message.

So, my suggestions for new terms:

• Strategy
• Target only one enemy at a time
• Target all enemies at once
• Tank
• Kiter
• Healer
• Nuker
• Enemy
• Please kite the enemy
• Please tank the enemy
• All (referring to all enemies, all items etc)
• Any (like above)
• Everyone (referring to party members)
• Please cast your spells at the same time
• Area of Effect
• Walk (as in walking mode)
• Run (as in running mode)
• Aggro

From my experience on doing the final job quests, with only these terms (+ability/enemy names and already existing terms) you could explain most of the strategies used in the game. By not having these kind of terms, when party members can't understand each other it is almost impossible to get the strategy explained if it's any more complicated than "Full attack!".

My apologies for posting to over three weeks old thread, but I think this is very important matter to bring the players with different languages together.

I don't think forums mods are alowed to disclose information on their personal character accounts.

Even if they were allowed to, doubt they would do it. What's the point anyway, beside being harassed/annoyed in-game. Players would always ask them questions about unreleased stuff etc. Way better to remain anonymous and to enjoy the game just like everyone :)

Yeah, it'd be a bad idea for a community rep/mod or any member of the team for that matter to give out their character information. It could lead to tons of bad drama, and who knows what else.
