I don't really care who won. Kinda obvious what would win from the start.

Though what's funny is how the video was edited to add in a large applause. In the actual video shows only two people clapping.

Only thing I don't like about Fortnite is how it treats it's contracted employees. It's apparently how they release content so quickly. They just hire huge amounts of cheap contracted game devs and toss em away once they're done with em. Or wait till they quit from being burned out.

Its not being dismissive, 14s teams works hard and its there for all to see, Fortnites team copies other games and took the route of doing whats popular to make a quick dollar. FF as a game embodies all things people gave speeches about, from the hard work the dev teams puts in, to the love of the industry, the want to tell amazing stories, and creating memorable experiences. Fortnite will just be another shooter we forget was cool because the next shooter has the biggest flashiest animations and the new gimmick every uncaring studio goes after. While games like FF put effort into leaving an actual mark on its players. What the devs do and care about with ffxiv shows.

Also as for *game that gets the same content since 2015* I wanna ask, How many portraits are there of beautiful women that are hailed as master pieces, how many songs new and old are there about someones first love, how many movies are about romance, how many tv shows, books, poems, operas, plays, are about falling in love.

You may see my point, art and entertainment as a medium is repetitive, you cannot reinvent the wheel, but you can make it better for general use and consumption. As far as a weeb game goes, you're playing a Japanese game, idk what you expect, and as far as dress up goes, I see you wearing the Edda outfit from the mog station, you would probably complain about the lack of the customization.

Its not putting FFXIV on a pedestal to say it deserves more then a nomination for the work people like Ishikawa, Soken, and all the people who make their work possible do.

And Lastly as far as Niche, FFXIV is probably one of the more popular MMOs out today, it WAS niche back in HW, but now it is a top MMO.

Say I'm a fan, act like its on a pedestal, but tbh it sucks that it lost out to a game that needs to copy Titanfall mechs to *be ahead of the curve*

There's a reason why Jump Force was in the running for best fighting game of the year, when Power Rangers Battle for the Grid is a 10xxxxxxxx better game.

and obviously there's a reason why Fortnite won best ongoing game over XIV.

Those three points baby.

You only need to look at IGN and the other online reviews to understand who to really trust for your actual GOTY reviews. Because at the end of the day the VGAS are about who has money, and who's gonna make money.

Its like when WoW was the big thing. At almost no point in its life was it actually the best gameplay experience, but people who didnt play video games played WoW.

Fortnite is that, twentyfold. It makes more money than most genres make. It makes more annually than the top 3 premium games combined. Its closest competitor sits at ~60% of the total yearly revenue.


I dont enjoy the game at all, but purely in what it brings the games industry (for good and bad), its not going to walk away from any industry award show with nothing.


It was nice to see FE3H win best strategy game though. As someone who plays mostly MMO's and strategy games, its rare that anything we're actually excited about is even mentioned in passing.

14 is an MMO that is not THE MMO. Congrats, it is in someones shadow. Thats how the MMO genre works to everyone who doesnt play MMO's and a whole bunch that do. Been like that since EQ launched and it was Ultima Online who? And since WoW launched, its been WoW.

Love how they say its because its "niche" or not a lot of ppl play it when disco elysium walked away with 4 awards. That alone trashes their entire argument. A game doesn't have to massively popular to earn recognition. Luckily most other awards did seem fairly distributed.

Well just because its still running doesnt make it a great ongoing game. FFXIV, seen from the outside, is INCREDIBLY stale in its content. It does the same content rotation, with only random sub-systems added in that fail to catch on, for several years now. While the conservative playerbase might enjoy knowing exactly whats going to come with which patch number, this looks really bad from the outside.

The moment I saw Fortnite up there, I knew nothing else mattered.

Yeah, pretty much. I'm (mostly) content with the game as it currently stands, but they will need to step out of their safe zone eventually if they want to remain relevant. The main thing FF XIV has going for it right now is that it isn't WoW.

None of it's really a big deal, Fortnite winning what it did was just expected tbh.

End of the day, you don't need validation from an award show to justify liking something.

And, even then, XIV isn't the greatest game ever out there. It's okay. It's fun. It has things that are enjoyable. It's an alright game. Doesn't mean it lacks some really jarring flaws that stick with a lot of new people who like MMO's but don't really care about FF specifically. Doesn't mean it's, in particular, an innovative or boat-rocking game, or a game that really stands out on its own merits from other played MMO's. It's a very rigid, predictable game, which is fine, some people prefer that. And while it does have a story that from a "whole" perspective is cool, long drags of it just drag on (Post ARR MSQ and even segments before then, all of SB felt incredibly disjointed non-cohesive and either too fast, or too slow). And there's been less overall XIV-specific worldbuilding that isn't "oh here's Ivalice. oh here's Nier" with stories that, on their own and without the knowledge/interest in those titles, is... boring.

Music's good by and large, but a lot of it is remixed versions of other game music, or music already used at this point (E3S/E4S/Nier alliance raid, dungeons share the same tracks aside from a handful, one dungeon was remixed from one of the Alex themes, etc..) which, while cool for throwbacks, don't really impart something new that's impactful. Only song like that I've hit was really the Hades theme/SHB theme.

Not saying the remixes aren't fun to listen to, or aren't good, just that it's a lot less interesting to hear a remix song than it is to load up into The Final Steps of Faith and hear Nidhogg's theme for the first time.

Despite what issues people personally have with the game, there is no downplaying how successful FFXIV has been over the years, especially after Shadowbringers. Eh, I'm not too fussed about Fortnite winning. Would it have been cool to see FFXIV get that kind of recognition? Absolutely. It doesn't really mean anything, and there are enough biases and factors beyond simply "how good is this game" that influence how well a game does at any awards show. Heck, those other factors are often far MORE important than how good it is for determining who gets the award, and of course there's also the simple fact that the question of overall quality of a game has subjective elements in the first place. At least FFXIV was even nominated - considering how under the radar it was until ShB, that's kind of neat.

This is not a true statement. Considerably less than 50% of the complete FFXIV soundtrack (that is, counting ARR and all expansions as one big OST) is remixed from music previously used in other games, FF or otherwise.

A sufficiently fresh remix doesn't count as "music already used at this point". E.g. Eden 3 - yeah sure it's a remix, but it's kind of disingenuous to compare that to the original track it's based on and be like "these are basically the same". You seem to be putting forth a viewpoint that remixes and leitmotif are bad things, which is a bit bizarre. Sure if each expansion had SO little original music, compared to being just wall-to-wall remixes, then maybe you'd have a point. But this isn't remotely true of any of XIV's OSTs.

Wh-what? Dungeons share the same tracks?? What game are you playing? The last time a dungeon DIDN'T have its own theme was 2.x. Dungeon themes do remix the area they're in, and sometimes remix other music from earlier in the game if there's something in the dungeon that's referential to the earlier thing in question, but very few dungeon themes sound remotely like the themes of other dungeons, excepting when it's an intentional remix because the dungeon is a hard mode of a previous one, etc.

I mean sure, this incorporates one of the main melodies from this. But if you'd hear the former and be like "yawn. We already had this track." because of the latter, then uh... wow.

You, uh... are aware that both the Hades fight music (I'm assuming you mean phase 2, since phase 1 is literally just Shadowbringers again) and the pieces from Final Steps of Faith (excluding Dragonsong, but again I'm assuming that by "Nidhogg's theme" you mean phase 2 or 3) are remixes, right? You have some weird positions on music quality and remixes, and dismissing any track that incorporates remixing or leitmotif from previous tracks (many of which are among the most memorable, and often the most beloved, tracks in the entire OST) as "not impactful" because it's just a "throwback" is the strangest take I think I've ever seen when it comes to FFXIV's music.

I mean you can just not LIKE the music of FFXIV, sure. Obviously I wouldn't agree with that, but that's just an opinion. No problem there. But there are a lot of assumptions and takes in your post that really don't work, and a lot of things that are straight-up factually incorrect. Kinda feels like you want to be an Informed Contrarian going against the grain of the (very popular around here) opinion that XIV has amazing music, but you didn't actually pay that much attention to the music.

Fortnite is trash, but that game is updated regularly, new events, game modes and more. It is EPIC's main focus. FFXIV on the other hand is stagnant. It never should have been on that list for best "ongoing game" or whatever. FFXIV should have been nominated for soundtrack.

Updated regularly shouldn't be the sole biggest decider though if they will throw in an mmo, as you can't really rush updates as much. And even if people in general feel xiv's stale content wise... the numbers are still growing so stale or not the majority still find it fun.

And sure they could try to step outside the comfort zone but look at blue mage and eureka. New ideas that to this day the majority hate and desperately do not want to see expanded upon.

I take it as a if it ain't broke don't fix it kinda deal for now most are happy where xiv is.

My point was more: Songs like "Dancing Mad" while I enjoyed it during the Kefka fight, is not a song tailored specifically to XIV that represents what is going on within the game. It's Dancing Mad. Dragonsong, the SHB Theme, are songs specifically made for XIV as a whole and have particular meaning towards the story, themes etc... of the game. Final Omega's theme, from the majority of those raid fight themes, was more impactful to me as an XIV player as it was an XIV-made-for song, rather than part of a throwback for nostalgia I don't have. (Again: I don't think those throwback songs are bad, they're just not particularly special when you take it into the context of the game as FFXIV as a whole).

Maybe I'm technically mistaken on a remix etc... but my point in using the term was: We've had Leviathan's theme, yes we're fighting Leviathan again and this re-done version of the theme fits the fight (and yes I do like it), but it's not something that really bespeaks to the situations/themes occurring in the game in a meaningful manner aside from: "It's Leviathan again." I'm not saying it's a bad song, but it's just that: a boss theme. It doesn't hold much more narrative-ly than the first one, other than the thought process that the new version of it might be how the WoL would remember the song.

For dungeons, every boss shares the same theme/trash is the SHB battle music. Which is the majority of the dungeon, and the ambient dungeon tracks are rarely anything more than ambient music. Ambient music is nice to listen to, it's relaxing in a lot of cases, and I'm not saying it's poorly made (and I'm not saying it takes no effort/skill): but that's what it is, ambient music.

I just never understand why people care about this stuff... I never had. Does the game winning anything change how I play it? No, and if it does then that person wasn't very invested anyway. At the same time, I don't think SE cares as much cause if they did, they'd paid like Epic did to make an impression and make an 8 minute ad.

I don't care about the award itself but more what it represents which is acknowledgement of how far xiv's come, the struggles the devs faced getting xiv to where it's at. That's what I mostly care about so in my POV, awarding it to a game everyone knows about that didn't really struggle to get where they are it's akin to a slap in the face of the devs. That's how I view it.

Fortnite got lucky, xiv actually had to earn it's playerbase by working hard.

That I can understand and agree with honestly so no harm there. Tho while I do agree fornite got lucky those devs work hard too. All devs do, so I didn't want to make it like only SE devs work hard for their game. Tho yeah I do know what you mean. Tho to be extremely fair, Fornite failed at first too. Remember it used to be a buy to play PVE game about zombies if I remember correctly. That part of the game bombed hard. It was the battlegrounds mode that saved it from the graveyard.

Least it keeps them from playing xiv I guess, already super hard to find a static of like minded folk or pugs that don't devolve to name calling or fighting over one wipe as is. Or getting paired with a blm who uses ice over and over cause "It has a pretty animation" without the game being overran with kids lol
