I was a Mentor. Now I am just a Crafting Mentor because I don't have 1500 coms.

Whilst I think the OP is taking a little far, I agree that 1500 comms is a bit silly.

They're not a good measurement of how good or how respectable somebody is. People with loads of comms can be terrible mentors and those with fewer comms can be great ones. And people get comms for all sorts of reasons and may not get comms for all sorts of reasons.

For example: I mostly group with friends for stuff and that takes away a lot of opportunity to get comms, I've always been happy to mentor people and help them learn things in game, but because I do my roulette with friends after 6 years of playing the game, I'm only close to 1500 comms. I also play on 3 characters, so I actually have more than 1500 but the sub 1500 is on my original character. So collectively I have plenty of comms. With this requirement it probably then makes more sense to make comms an account wide thing.

But also fortunately I don't care too much about the title because its more of an ego boost rather than something to signify this person is going to be helpful or constructive. However, it is nice to have.

They are the best measurement of how " well liked" or "well aspected" - or maybe even to stick with your choice of word: respectable - a person is we have, though. They're not ideal but they're the only thing that reflects at least a little bit what other people thought about you - something that isnt all that unimportant to being a mentor.

Honestly, looking at threads like this I feel this new requirement is working out really well: Everyone who complained in the fashion the OP did so far was probably not all that intrested in being a good mentor to begin with, since thats something you can be without that little crown next to your name. Those who lost their crown, but arent upset about it and just accept it are probably not that invested in proper mentoring aswell.
And those who are working to get it back and are queueing solo instead of with friends to increase their chances are filling up queues.

If you want to keep mentoring, you can do that - you dont need the crown for that.

They can't. So removing it entirely is the best solution.

Being a mentor isn't about the crown - It's about helping new players. I have just shy of 1300 coms but I don't feel the need to become a mentor again - I found most folks just used it as a status symbol you can still help new players and have access to the novice network I do believe.

Isn't this the problem though? We all know comms don't tell you if someone will be a good mentor, so why are they so vital to the selection process? If they are only vague indicators of quality, then they should be a minor part of the selection criteria. Also remember that along with comms, a combat mentor needs to run duties. In the old system you could have 300 comms and not qualify for mentor.

At the same time, I see a lot of helpful mentors in the NN that have the limited status for what seems like no reason. The only difference that really sticks out for me is that sprouts wanting to return as mentors now have a bigger hurdle to overcome, which is a double edged sword. Some genuinely want to mentor after seeing how helpful the NN is, though some just want the chat.

Actually, I do not think so at all. Whenever I am running a dungeon with my cousin (I as Red Mage, he as Black Mage) and it's a 4-man, we almost never get a commendation, so the tank(s) and healer(s) are trading. So the profession matters already. DPS have low impact as there are too many to stand out and we have low individual regocnition: We do not get spanked by all sorts of mobs and we don't heal and ressurect (actually, if I think about that...) and all that. Look, I am sure that once you ressurect a person as a healer - your dedicated profession - people will give you a commendation, as a kind of "Thank you" or "Sorry for your trouble" sort of thing.

Apart from that, being nice does not actually matter. In a shi..truckload of dungeons, I have typed my butt off to explain and ask who's the sprout and all that, and I get almost no commendation for that, so I eventually stopped that again, especially since "being nice" often tends to turn away the speedrunners and you are the suddenly the bad guy for slowing down the whole thing. Heck, they even run into boss rooms while I, as Scholar and thus a mandatory part of survival, still explain, and I am a quick typer. So "being nice" is surely not a thing either.

People do not even talk because they have no keyboard attached and "selecting a player for a commendation is a PITA with a controller" according to some poster here that I read earlier this day. They also leave immediately so I think they don't bother at all.

In the end, there is still the gender and looks going on as well. I can't complain as I get my commendations, maybe like 0.7/dungeon or something, slowly but steady, but I am at like far off the numbers you guys pull off here despite being Scholar and nice and helpful and patient, too. Especially when people actually talk and/or listen. But who want's to recommend that "male DPS potatoe" when there is a Viera tank or that "UwU Kaaawaiii gamer gurl" White Mage to select? Look at these forums and certain threads, the species is a hindrance (granted I do it myself, but I also do not claim it's easy to collect commendations).

If you really believe the world judges people for their behaviour, you are "a bit" naive. -- You also can observe that on the forums right here. Especially you, Vidu, can almost type whatever you want and in whatever words you wish, you have your reputation and your stand. If a 1st-timer would say the exact same thing, he would get only a fraction of your upvotes if he is a generic, blonde, male Hyur. I bet 20€ on that.

"The best we have" =/= "Its good"

I didnt say it was a "good measurment", I said its the best - and only - we have. We can agree on it not being a "good" one, but please tell me: What better option do we have? What other system do we have in game that can be checked by the system to tell wether or not you're someone other people might enjoy having around to do a dungeon with?

I am well aware that people give out commendation for all sorts of reasons and that you're more likely to get one if you're the tank or the healer so obviously they're not really a measurment of how nice or helpful or knowledgeable you are, but they're the only thing that gives at least a hint about wether or not other people thought playing with you was a good experience (even if only because you being the tank allowed them to finally enter the dungeon or because they went "aawww!" seeing that you picked a cute name/character/outfit).

And while its pretty likely that you can gather this amount of commendations without being overly friendly, helpful or extremly skilled, simply by playing and acting decent enough (Hi, AoE, Goodbye) just because someone likes your character/name/job (or because you're the last person around), I doubt you'll earn many commendations by being a jerk - so at least it could serve as a filter to block that type of person.

We can obviously think about putting other system in place - but just as the commendations they have their pros and cons.
Two ideas I remember seeing are these:
1) Have people earn special "mentor commendations", so to speak - something handed out by other players the same way as commendations, but seperate from them. You'd either need to earn a certain amount of them to even become a mentor OR earn a certain amount in a given timeframe to stay a mentor. Players would be asked to give out those commendations to people who they think should be mentors.
I think its pretty obvious that this would have similar problems to our current commendations: People are already having different ideas about what a mentor should be and do, aswell as people just not handing them out at all because they dont want to bother or they're not actually following the request and dont hand them out to someone they think would be a good mentor but just to the person whos playing the tank.
2) Have some official review-system - for example, have the GMs (or someone similar) review wether or not someone should be a mentor. First of all that would require a massive time investment on their part and even then, what would they go by? A 5-minute-interview in which someone could act like the nicestes person in the world so you'd only weed out those who arent smart enough to present themselves from their best side during this?

I really dont think that theres a great solution here - but I also dont think that we need to bin the whole system just because it isnt perfect or because it isnt what someone expected or wanted it to be. Its not like its really hurting anyone - unless someone can explain to me why its more hurtful when someone with a crown next to their name is being a jerk...

You get commendations because you've proved yourself helpful by either a) offering advice to those who need it b) playing your role correctly and not being a monkey/causing mad chaos c) all around helpful. I've farmed commends as a dps just by doing dps and mechanics. That being said, 1.5k commendations isn't anything too harsh to ask for imo. If you've done everything in the proper way (and I'm pointing mostly here to if you did not go unsync Ifrit a gajillion times), then you should already be well on your way for commends. It's a privilege to be a mentor, not a right, especially if one doesn't fulfill the requirements. You don't need a cosmetic item to be helpful.

When I play tank or healer I usually give it to the dps who's caused me the least strife. Or I'll give it to the person who's trying to improve and you can clearly see. Tbh I'm glad they put this blockade on it because I am NOT going to commend a summoner with a mentor crown pre 5.1 when they are not worthy of displaying the crown because they lack knowledge of the fight, the class, and general gameplay as a whole. Maybe this time around we'll have mentors who are actually capable, because most people who proudly displayed the crown had zero business to.

It's not even about looking for alternative methods of evaluation necessarily, but not trying to extrapolate beyond the information you have. Comms being only vaguely relevant for determining likability or helpfulness doesn't mean that you can't use them, but it makes me hesitant to heap more and more importance on them. Using the total number collected only really serves as time gate anyway. If you barely manage to scrape 1 comm out of every few dungeon runs, you'll eventually have enough to meet the mentor requirement. The game already tracks playtime and can use it to set your eligibility for statuses (such as novice) so the comm requirement as is could be replaced with a time requirement with little impact.

I guess if I had to summarize my opinion it's that just because something is the best option doesn't mean that it's good enough. If SE was going to make stricter mentor requirements, they should have looked into ones that were more meaningful. Comms per dungeon run for example makes much more sense (as long as it doesn't penalize you for running content where you can't be commed) because it can't be overcome by just playing the game long enough.

I make plenty of comms as DPS - I once received 7 comms as BRD when running a 24-man because I was helpful and kept my pt laughing. I don't think being a "UwU Kaaawaiii gamer gurl" has anything to do with it.
You're not going to gel with every party, and that's fine - but from experience, just being helpful, light-hearted, and skilled will net you enough comms.

Mentoring is not a reward, it was supposed to be a commitment to help new/uneducated players. If you think something was OWED to you then you really didn't understand what mentoring was about.

An arbitrary number of comms isn't a great indication of helpfulness (considering what a lot of people comm for) but if it's keeping people with an "I'm taking my ball and going home if you don't call me Sir" attitude from being mentors then it's better than what we had before.

I think the mentor system has been made for people who progress trough the duty finder. I see many players here and on reddit or even in game complaining not getting enough commendations because they mostly play with friends. I'm sorry but why do you need to be a mentor first if you only play with your clique/friends/static?
You're not helping anyone, you're not taking the chance to queue into a newbie/terrible group. You just want to play in a controlled environment with similar skilled players. There's nothing wrong about it, but I don't see why you should get or deserve any commendations for avoiding the DF.

I've been spamming DF since I start playing 11 months ago. I've been very dedicated to it because well... I like it. I like being in random groups with random players in a sometimes very chaotic environment. I have 2397 commendations. Playing all 3 roles. I sometimes queue as tank/healer solely to help DPS get their queues faster. I've always been polite, always been greeting and thanking players even if they weren't replying. English isn't even my first language. SE and the game decided to reward me for this and giving me the mentor crown, and I took it. Of course, I think the crown doesn't represent what a mentor should be, and I like the tree or water can suggestion a lot more but hey, there's nothing I can do about it.

I'm glad they changed the minimum commendations to 1500, because I've run into so many terrible mentors, ifrit spammers who were doing nothing but adding more shame to the symbol. They weren't helpful, polite or kind, and most of them were just plain bad at this game. I hate judging on others skills but come on, you don't deserve any symbol when you still don't know how to stack at lvl 80. For a good while, I wasn't even wearing mine because of these players. Now I'm glad they are gone and I hope we will be able to rebuild our reputation. But I don't know... there are still a lot of arrogance among remaining mentors.

Imho, kindness should come first as mentor, then knowledge, then skill.

Give me a heart symbol SE, I'll make good usage of it.

While I agree that a commendation requirement isn't the best way to go about it, the whole entitlement argument people have been throwing is because of the idea of:

If you need a fancy icon to feel like mentoring someone, you're probably not fit to be one in the first place. It's like wanting recognition for doing charity. If you wanna help, you just do it. No cameras or witnesses are needed to validate how "good and helpful" of a person you are.

Yikes. I think you've got a bit of a chip on your shoulder there. If you haven't been getting many comms that just means you haven't been standing out in a good way to other players. Sure, it's typically a bit harder to do as DPS (unless your party members are using certain unmentionable measuring methods, in which case performing well as DPS can net you many comms), but since being a mentor is supposed to be for players experienced in all 3 roles that is a moot point.

There is no hard and fast formula to getting comms. Some party members like explanations or banter while others prefer quick and efficient runs. Your "being nice" might be seen as helpful to some people, or come across as "wasting time" or "liking the sound of your own voice" to others. The manner/attitude you speak with can make a huge difference with that as well, as does the situation and timing.

Being able to recognize and adapt your behavior to a situation/other people's preferences is an important quality in a teacher. That's why while it is definitely imperfect, commendations are a reasonable prerequisite for being a mentor. They measure how well-received and noteworthy a player's behavior/performance in DF has been, which is directly related to the intended purpose of Mentors. You can blame it on whatever you like, but at the end of the day if you don't have many comms it just means you haven't stood out enough in a good way.

Agree to disagree over entitlement opinions. The game has evolved since the implementation of the mentor system and therefore, so should the requirements to qualify. If you do not qualify for the content, you have that privilege revoked.

The fact that people come across as blubbering babies, or as people would say nowadays, snowflakes, just furthers my resolve.

I do however agree, that there should be an alternative method to gain mentor status. Such as a minimum of [insert number] achievement points in relevant sections

Yup, very difficult to stand out as DPS in a game in which reliable metrics for DPS' performance are forbidden because OMG, bad dog! (parsers, cough).
As a healer, DPS + keep everyone alive and people will shower you with commendations. :D

As a tank, I get less comms but that's probably due to it being my second class, so my performance is not exactly up to savage standards.

The mentor system is not perfect, but if you've been playing the game for any decent length of time while also leveling tank(s) and healer(s) to 80 and don't have 1500 comms.... I'm a little surprised to be honest. I don't think it's an unreasonable amount at all.

Edited to add: yes, undoubtedly healers and tanks get more than dps. However, being a mentor involves having spent a significant amount of time playing each role. If you only rushed a tank and healer to 80 just to qualify as a mentor, how well do you really think you'd be able to advise people on those roles? 1500 is really not that much. If you think it is, you probably need to spend more time tanking and healing.

Uh, 3 days doing roulettes as PLD (minus Expert) and already got more comms than in 3 weeks playing mostly RDM and a bit of BRD. And I've been explaining mechanics and rotation issues to struggling players as DPS, while I haven't had the opportunity to do the same as PLD due to struggling to do well and some minor tankxiety.

So no, most people don't really comm the most helpful. They default to the tank, or the healer, or their favorite race or a nice glam. I can't count the times I've saved a 4-man run with Verraise and still got no comms, while I haven't done anything worthy of note as tank, if not even some slightly sloppy tanking and I'm getting 2 comms per run at least, if not more.

Tanks and healers get more commendations because what they do is much more visible. You could be the best DPS in the world and most people would never even notice. Held aggro, didn't spin, kept a decent pace? Tank did a good job. No one died, status effect cured quickly? Healer did a good job. SAM did... um... well, huh.

For people wanting comms for being a dps I highly recommend doing PVP. We'll always shower you with good ones since that is absolutely the place you can tell a good dps from a bad one, especially in Feast.

I can't count the times I've saved a 4-man run with Verraise and still got no comms, while I haven't done anything worthy of note as tank, if not even some slightly sloppy tanking and I'm getting 2 comms per run at least, if not more.

I addressed that in my post already, did I not? Like yeah sure, it is usually a bit harder to earn comms as a DPS. However, being a mentor is about being experienced and skilled in all three roles so the discrepancy should not matter.

If earning comms as a tank is as simple/quick as you described, then anyone who has spent a reasonable amount of time in DF as a tank and healer should have plenty of commendations. Which brings me to the point of my previous comment.

NN is not being revoked, and only DoW/DoM will have the roulette, not DoL/DoH mentors.

Good thread. I think I basically agree with the folks who have said that comms aren't a great measuring stick, but they're the best we've got, much better than only having "complete X duties." The # of duties you've completed includes those where you were on the floor for 3/4 of it, or afk, or any number of things where the completion might be credited to your party members rather than yourself. Comms measure YOU, however imperfectly. The combination of those two imperfect measures and having leveled a job of each role is a pretty reasonable way to estimate who would make a decent mentor.

I've been playing almost exactly 4 years and don't have the comms to become a mentor. This is probably because for half of that I only played 1 DPS job, and also I don't really do that much DF content outside of maybe just 1 or 2 roulettes on the days I play. Turns out you have to actually do content to get comms! Or maybe I'm actually just a garbage player? But the point is that the fact I haven't accumulated 1500 comms means I'm probably not qualified to be giving other players advice, an assessment I can't really argue with.

Also, as others have mentioned, you really shouldn't be thinking of the crown as a reward or some kind of clout. It's not for you, it's for the sprouts.

As a healer, DPS + keep everyone alive and people will shower you with commendations. :D

I would not give a comm for dps who has the highest dps because he refused to do any of the mechanicks and just did his training dummy rotation, you can see helpfull players in other ways.

I'm just crafting mentor now because not doing healers and tanks role quests when never play ether of them. I have dps role quests done. Doesn't matter to me since don't care about mentor roulette at all. Being just crafting mentor just fine with me. I have think around 4000 comms that got from being a dps since start of 2.0. Who cares if spend 30 dollars month on sub that's not even close to half I pay them each month. Think new mentor changes is just fine how they are.
