No. Now that we got Energy Drain back, I think SCH is better than before.
I'm having the time of my life as a healer in Shadowbringers. I see no reason to stop playing a healer now. :D I've just about leveled all three. WHM is my favorite but I enjoy SCH and AST as well.
I have not. I’ve spent considerably more time dabbling in other classes than I did before the expansion, but haven’t found something that suits me better yet. I have spent a lot more time on my crafters, though.
my healer was AST. I quit playing it in serious content until yesterday, now I'm playing it again.
I have been a healer main since 2.0 and will continue to do so, regardless of the changes that may or may not occur. As long as healer continues to be the largest backbone of the party, I will continue to play it. My enjoyment from the job comes from (1) optimization and (2) reveling in the hectic fights that occurs when playing with new / lesser skilled players. There is a immense level of satisfaction found when being able to carry an extremely heavy burden in the party and not faltering in that responsibility. That will never change for me and healing has always given me that satisfaction in this game.
WHM in 2.0
AST in 3.0 and 4.0
but switch to MCH in 5.0
Me dumping healing role have little to do with how AST cars change but more the obsession of DPS in general from community and DEV.
Every single expansion I lose a little bit of green and gain little bit more of red. In 5.0 our cars change so drastic that it focus on 1 thing only, dps gain. And I was told 5.0 will bring back the balance of our heal and dps, with all those powerful oGCD heal and cars change, I feel we are more a dps with some heal skill than a heal that could buff, cleanse and occasionally dps. 5.0 was the chosen one it was supposed to bring back balance not destroy it
I dropped healing as my main class. I used to main scholar but the absolute gutting they got fit Shadowbringers I had to drop it. Removing most of the Scholar downtime kit was too much for me to simply smile and grit my teeth to endure. I picked up dancer like many and have been loving it to death.
I did level up my scholar after capping dancer since I knew I wouldn't have to go over the main story with scholar which would bore me to tears, and honestly the healer role quests were all the confirmation I needed to see that my assumption on that was right since pretty much every single healer role quest was a bore combat wise. Scholar at 80 is... Okay at best the healing feels fine but everything else just feels empty and lifeless to me. It's too bad that I think white mage is an incredibly boring class to be since they seem like the most interesting healer right now. I tried to get white mage to 70 but stopped at 60 because of how boring I found it.
So I still heal a bit, but really just for the instant queues for roulettes or to help friends.
Honestly i'm a thread away from quitting AST. I was a Noct for trash Dia for boss AST and now it HAS to be Diurnal the entire time (dont get me started on getting agro from a left over regen on tanks in this game........)
In FFXI My mains were DNC, SCH, PUP. I dont even know what SCH is in this game with the fairy and no strategems and what they did this patch. If DNC didn't come out honestly i'd have quit the game. I'm an omni crafter but that's not exactly riveting excitement. What WAS exciting was in the midst of battle while keeping people alive was also 'gambling' the mini game of the cards. That's entirely gone now for the sake of a VERY few "MUH DEEPS" we (an entire community who learned and fell in love with a specific job) got an entire overhaul. Try that on a DPS job, change all their identity to "mantra", more healing potency. See how that goes. My AST stopped at 78. My jaw hurts from gritting teeth trying to even be viable, before AND after update. My DNC 70 will finish the MSQ and job.
It really seems like healers who were ‘mains’ in the role have generally stuck with the role regardless of the changes, and with the Astrologian changes even that feels much better to play (card effects aside). Not that it matters but I had been a DPS main until Shadowbringers and I changed to Scholar main (though Dancer is definitely a close second lol). I’ve always played Scholar a lot, but I never had a desire to have it as my ‘main’ job until now.
It’s not a fair thing to say, but honestly I feel like players who have quit healing altogether because of the changes are players who weren’t particularly interested in healing anyway. Healers playstyles really haven’t changed significantly outside of damage over time spell consolidation, and with Energy Drain returned both Scholar and White Mage essentially have ‘DPS rotations’, even if they are very simplified. You can still spam Broil/Glare/Malefic like you did in previous expansions, you can still do a lot of your healing with oGCD usage to extend DPS windows, and (personally )feel like every job now has an interesting healing kit that’s actually engaging to use. Even if you’re completely minimising healing output you still have tools to help the party with DPS or healing at no cost, whether it’s Asylum, Assize, Sacred Soil, Earthly Star, Chain Stratagem, etc. Even when you’re not healing you can still proactively use your toolkit to further reduce the amount of healing needed, which is rewarded with Afflatus Misery / Energy Drain windows / windows to comfortably use cards without having to clip healing oGCDs.
(As an aside I do understand that Astrologian’s cards are too undertuned, I’m not arguing that healers are completely perfect and balanced, just that personally I don’t think any of the playstyles are less satisfying than before)
You lost me with this. It's people who have mained a healer job, who pay a monthly subscription for exactly a specific job and know it inside and out, and got gutted and/or completely overhauled...were the ones MOST interested in healing and now have no desire for it.
I've mained SCH since around 2.2, and going into this expansion was no exception. I like playing other healing jobs too sometimes, and I was, like many people, dubious about the changes to AST, and about how they seemed to making healers too homogeneous and losing their individual identity. However, I continued to play SCH through 5.0 and still had a lot of fun with it. After playing AST for a bit, I actually find the new card system pretty fun.
I do think both of them do need adjustments - 5.05 helped, but didn't completely fix everything. I also think the healer shortage in the game makes it apparent that a lot of people are unhappy and that they need to take some more action when it comes to balancing healers, but I can't say that any of this discouraged me from healing at all, and I still have a lot of fun doing it.
I have being an Scholar since day 1 and never have even thought about changing, its practically the same thing.
That doesnt change that I still raid as other jobs sometimes.
No but these damn tanks bring me pretty close.
In a word, yes.
What will I end up as? I haven't found that answer yet. I have 4 jobs to 80: RDM, DNC, WHM and PLD... I am considering going tank, but I like RDM and DNC too... I'm even digging the new SMN. But I have a feeling that if something isn't done to the healers, I will probably leave the game. I already have zero interest in 6.0 even if it were to have a new healer, because with what we got in 5.0, any new job will just be a horrible reskin of something we've already got knowing them. Probably thrown together at the last minute too with regurgitated assets for their casting animations because.... screw healers seems to be the theme on the Dev's minds even if they don't come out and say it.
Nope. I'll stick with AST and then WHM as a secondary option (to avoid the those double AST comps, for one); same as always. I've stuck with AST since its release (weak HW start and all), but before then I was a BRD main (carry-over from 1.0) that dabbled in WHM. I was a healer back in XI that wanted to try something new in XIV, but still ended up gravitating back to it by HW's release. I've adapted to AST's new card system, understand why they likely went this direction (won't know for sure unless somebody asks it in a LL/interview), found a little charm in it, and appreciate the recent buffs. Of course it could still use some additional buffs and tweaks, but some of the hyperbole about it is eye-roll worthy. WHM has gotten a tad bit more interesting and rewarding with the new job gauge; I've been playing it irregularly and am content with it.
Not getting another healer this expansion doesn't suddenly make me no longer want to play the role either, and if it wasn't something I'd have an interest in anyway then I'd still keep trucking along (and I am) with AST & WHM.
The biggest reason I retreated from healing after 2 expansion and a core game is simply, I thought 5.0 we will be focus on healing. It turn out not the case, same downtime, and even more powerful oGCD heal. I just miss the time when Titan HM can easily step a low HP player to his death, I miss the time in the Vault...
Responding to the OP, no, no one quits healing because no one is healing anymore, haven't you seen the queues recently?
I've actually started healing more.
I think the only reason I've healed this expansion is for the fast queue times. Healing is fun for a bit but I get bored with it after a few runs. I'm definitely having more fun as dps right now.
So...just because you have the opinion that the playstyles are not less satisfying than before you feel you are omniscient and above everyone else and you can just force your opinion onto others and claim "Well I like it, so if you don't then you obviously were not interested in healing in the first place."
I've played healers in mmos since I was NINE YEARS OLD (and just to measure the timeframe some for you I am now an adult, finished around 4 years of college, and working now. This is the first game that ever got me to stop maining a healer.
I have had a subscription to FFXIV since it started in 1.0, never lapsed, healer from 1.0 to 5.0, cleared all content as healer including savage level content/raids. You are gonna try to tell me I must not have been very interested in healing because I gave up in ShB due to SE's multiple bad choices and decisions??
Like, are you just purposefully being a jerk to stir the pot or something? Cause you could have easily posted your opinions of 5.0 healing without this condescending nonsense at any healer who quit healing because they personally saw their favourite job get gutted and it is no longer fun for them to play.
I have a vicious cycle of 'Fine, I'll do it myself' that I go through with tanking and healing.
I will always be Green DPS.
Come on guys... Healing on dungeons has always being boring, god i ev3n have put follow on a tank and let eos heal all the pulls when is not a big pull tank.
The fun part of raiding is the power of raiding, and so far im having a blast as a healer on savage
Never claimed it was perfect before either, scholar has always needed more, but I will argue to the high heavens that Miasma +bio -> shadowflare -> bane -> miasma II was way more exciting than AoW spam. If they made the initial hit of Miasma II weaker, and upped the dot, and gave us AoW, thatd have been fine.
And as far as raiding, that's boring too. I cant speak for savage, havent done ShB savages yet, but the regular raids, spam broil, that's it. At least ED is back so we have something to spend aetherflow on, still hardly fixes all the issues. I seriously doubt this savage tier will be any more difficult than Alphascape though, and I DPSed just fine in all those fights.
Indeed, it is boring and that is what I hope will change. Rework of how healers do damage, deal with downtime and a revalution so they get their hands on it earlier with a slow trickle of new spells as they level up. We might be level 80, yet spend a lot of time under 80 in Roulettes, Fates or doing synced content. Would not ask for something complex, as I think combos on a healer might make one compelled to press the lit up button over healing, but something straightforward and flexible. For example Arcanist as class for scholar gave a plethora of dots and tools that even helped less damage going on the party. Something like that for all healers with a seconday or tertiary class base and then the healing tools on top.
Going to. Playing amd enjoying rdm atm from Ast.
I only quit healing cause scholar was my main and every expansion my fairy gets weaker. Our shields are weakest and our aoe heals are far and few. If we had fall back heals like astro so we could shield and heal how ever we like I would be happy. Or make indom a 3 sec cool down and make it shorter rang like cure 3. If all else fails, let our shields stack the way regen does for astro and white mage so we dont waist mp on our ape heals causr 2 scholars used ET and Indom and have to now spam succor to keep the party topped off.
This speaks volume. For the expansion that was supposed to fix healers, it clearly wasn't based on what a lot of players wanted.
Speaking for myself, I played Conjurer back in 1.0, Scholar in A Realm Reborn, followed by Astrologian. Healer had always been my main throughout my years with FFXIV. But now... it doesn't feel good anymore. This is the first time since 1.0 that healer hasn't been my priority. Looking at Astrologian and Scholar in particular, which were my two favorites, what initially drew me to those jobs has now been stripped away.
At this point, I find myself looking forward to the prospect of a new Final Fantasy MMO down the line that is built upon what they have learned from past mistakes.
I'm fine with healers just healing. I find it fun. I think what really is happening is we are going to so a shift of those who truly want to heal for the sake of it an those who want to heal for que times. I'm not trying to say that's the only reason people dont like healing any more but since green dps is no longer a focus of the game, I think healers will be like the tanks where. The healer is now more pure healing while tanks went to hybrid dps. I think things will work out eventually.
The thing is, because of encounter design, we're still just green dps. Just now we have less to do, and we're punished for optimized healing instead of rewarded with something else interesting to do.
I wouldn't mind pure healing either, but you cant just slap on 1000 heals onto a class and call it a day, the game has to be designed for pure healers, and simply, this one is not.
Pretty much everybody I know who mained healer before Shadowbringers has quit to play something else. Only myself and one other remain.
I've considered switching to something else, but all the classes I have interest in are already overly saturated in the group I play with and healers are in critically high demand.
I'm healing for the sake of healing, and I've never liked DPS. But even so, green DPS is an essential part of why I like this game.
I used to play WoW, and the encounters were tuned to require constant healing. As such, there was never any room for error. Someone would screw up, and there was nothing I could do. We just had to die and try again. Honestly, I could have been replaced by a bot spamming flash heal and it wouldn't have made much difference.
In FFXIV, heals are overpowered, so I can be useful and actually fix the group's mistakes. But whenever you have powerful heals like that, you'll end up with downtime where you're not healing, and that downtime gets filled with DPS.
For me, green DPS isn't a diminution of my healing role. It's just the price I pay for being able to make a real contribution as a healer.
(Though I wouldn't mind healing requirements being tuned upward somewhat.)
I only heal to take advantage of the role in need for roulettes.
