I don't know what the joke is exactly, but I will tell you that I would feel embarrassed to recommend the game to my friends. They would play it and laugh at me. /sigh So when they ask me if they should try it out, I usually say, "no you probably shouldn't bother with it". Honestly, not many people could put up with it in its present state.

Video game reviewers go through a ton of video games all the time. It is their job. It's no surprise they're not keeping up on the current state of an MMO with such a dismal launch. They simply don't have the time. This is exactly why they're making a big deal about relaunching with 2.0. We cannot expect anyone - especially game reviewers - to give the game a second look until then.
And we should honestly be grateful that they're not. I love XIV, but it wouldn't be doing the game any favors if reviewers posted a feature every update saying: "It's a little bit better... but still sucks."

I dont think FFXII and FFXIII are good games. FFXIV is a very good game and with every patch it gains some more of Final Fantasy feeling. They just think one time bad, forever bad, but thats not the case and in my opinion, this game was never really bad. It just didnt had much content and was full of bugs at the beginning - incomplete. But it has changed very much. I love to play it.

personally I think there is a hidden agenda to keep slamming FFXIV. to all the MMO companys out there it is a threat. Quite easy for them to pay someone at a gaming new site to write a article on "best Final Fantasy games and make sure you give all FF online games bad publicity." Didn't this just happen at IGN a month or so ago? This is simply to get people riled up and remember the bad stuff about the games.
Personally I think SE decision to include Final Fantasy XI and XIV in the main line might have been misjudged. the title of Final Fantasy Online, imo, would have been more appealing to those who wish to play an MMO setting. -

Ones of the things that made my eye twitch was when Gary at Gamebreaker.TV continuously throws the FFXIV CE at his co-host. A few weeks ago on their TWIMMO show he actually wrote "TERA-able" on the box with permanent marker and threw it at his co-host again. Yea, it did bother me, because I can see all the great things SE has been trying to add to the game to make it work. It's just people like Gary and the rest of the world simply close their minds on the video game and won't give it a second chance. I feel that these sites will still give it a bad review after 2.0 is released.

truth told the majority of the market has the same opinion of the game and i can't blame them. yes, the game has gotten better in many aspects in the last 18 months, but it still has a long way to go before people start saying this game is great. -

Majority of the gaming market agrees shiny graphics = good and 8-16bit graphics = old and played out. However we have games like Minecraft, Braid, Bastion, Castle Crashers etc that are doing better than some shiny commercial games lol. It's not that everyone shares the "same opinion" it's that unlike the 80s and 90s people are more like mindless sheep and will rather agree with someone else's opinion than have their own.
This is what stagnated gaming in recent years because of people's inability to separate personal opinion from paid criticism as they say. FFXIV 2.0 would have happened regardless because even Tanaka himself said the game wasn't ready for release, but SE wanted to pad that report. It's really not hard to see how in this day people are a lot more likely to listen to someone else's review than form their own opinion. -

I saw someone last week say that FFXIV has just as much content in it as other mmo's, and I was like mm.. what? There are a lot of people out there desperate for more attention to FFXIV, desperate for more players to play it, and think Betty White should be advertising for the game right now. All of that would lead to FFXIV suicide. The game is getting better, but it's not ready for attention, so just enjoy the game if you do and let it gain prominence this June. Then if it's good during the 2.0 beta, people are going to change their opinions, and we'll have a good game. If it isn't good enough, then it will probably remain niche or fade into nothingness.

It's been since X and that was 10 years ago. It had things like that throughout in addition to a great battle system and story.
The only reason they still sell a lot of games are people being forgiving and hoping that we'll get another game like FF used to be. Even if 2.0 is successful it'll still be nothing compared to ps1 era FFs.
To the person that said DC and CC weren't that bad... Yes they were that bad. The gameplay was okay in both, but the script and massive cartoon they turned it into ruined FF7. CC especially took tiny elements of FF7 and blew them up into something stupid. Couldn't go 5 minutes without somebody using the words cells or copies. Zack was whining and crying through the whole game, watching cloud sobbing at the end... I mean wtf man Cloud was supposed to be a hard ass, not a 10 year old.
And Aeris afraid of the sky? She had been outside before... she lived in that snow village up north with professor gast and ifalna. Not to mention she wasn't afraid of anything, which was why she ran off by herself in FF7 and got herself killed. This is why I would riot over a remake, they would destroy it even more than they already have. -

Personally, i just hope they don't go all apeshits on their upcoming advertising campaigns. Imo - if one tries out a game, despite the generally bad grades or reviews, it shows a certain maturity and responsibility as a player/gamer. It shows one's not a blind follower of other's opinions.
In the best case scenario, one who feels a badly-reviewed game is nevertheless fun and enjoyable to play, s/he might stick around and become a contributing member of it's society, with fresh ideas and requests, instead of a bored troll who just keeps flooding the forums with more or less useless arguments about "how other games are better in this-and-that" (despite the fact one could simply be playing games s/he'd actually enjoy).
These kinda ppl just tend to show up after the usual "i was promised a good game by the advertisements, but it's nothing like i imagined, and now i'm excessively mad and loud about it" - incident. That makes me a little worried.
Surely, those opinions and PoVs' are just as valuable, as any other well-built petition or request with proper grammar and a good, solid reasoning behind it - but oh my god - the noise the people who don't understand them make! It's such a waste of time and breath to see bad trolls pissing off the stupid and naive. I just hope SE makes the campaign humble and gentle, and let players decide, whether they like what SE has to offer now.

Another thing I've noticed is that some people that have been commenting and saying that this game is crap have every class at level 50. The gameplay was terrible in my opinion. The targeting lines were clearly designed for players that were mentally and physically retarded and can't determine that when you have red numbers appear over your characters, you're being attacked and you better look around to see what's attacking you. Then there's the whole gambit system. This system was clearly made for the type of gamer that wants to do absolutely nothing while playing their shiny new $50 (at release) game. I do have to give FFXII credit on the vastness of it's world. The one thing that I will say about that vastness is that they went overboard with it. It should not take you over 3 hours to walk West from Rabanister to the next dungeon: Tomb of the Dynast King, then having to walk back to Rabanister just to go south for the next 8 to 12 hours and then north for the next 24. FFXII was 120 hours of wasted time. I wanted to play a Final Fantasy game, not be the center-guy in a political circle-jerk for 120 hours with next to no storyline. The characters were not worthy of remembering. The only one that really was, was Fran... and that was because of her cleavage and well formed ass and legs, but when you have professional 3D Graphics Artists designing characters, there had better be something that's worth looking at in the game.
I've noticed that a lot of people also have a lot of bad things to say about FFXIII. I thought that FFXIII was a very well made game. It had very high quality graphics, enticing CG sequences, amazing character development where you saw the characters change first hand through their interactions. One thing that I think threw people off about XIII is that the game has Lightening on the front cover when she is NOT the main character. If you pay attention, the main character tends to be the narrator and the character that develops their skills last. In this case it was Vanille. Another way you can tell is because throughout the entire story, it's showing how Vanille is always trying to atone for what's shes' done wrong: all the lives she took during the War of Transgression; then turning Sarah into a L'cie which in turn caused everybody else to become L'cie; causing Sazh's son to become a L'cie; and then causing everybody to become Cie'th, and finally failing to transform into Ragnarok for a second time and forcing Fang to do it for her again when Fang clearly does not have the proper amount of internal suffering to effectively attack and destroy a Fal-cie. I've noticed that a lot of people both professional and regular gamers say that FFXIII had a bad story that didn't focus around the main character, when they didn't properly identify who the main character was. They just assumed that it was the character on the cover, and ran with it. As for level design. On Cocoon things are very linear. Here's what I've noticed though that most people don't think about. SE added a sense of realism with their level design on Cocoon. Cocoon is mostly cities. Cities tend to be setup like grids (NYC has Streets and Avenues for the most part that break the city up into grid lines). Cocoon is designed in the same fashion. You can't really have a game that takes place in an artificial world (as in made and maintained by the Fal-Cie) without having things be pretty simple. This shows how the Fal-Cie think that humans are below them, and that in turn would justify how the level is designed. When you get to Pulse, you can see the wilderness within the level design because it's far more massive and open and clearly warped by nature. As for sound, I thought that FFXIII was amazing. The soundtrack is one of my faves, the voice acting was exceptionally well done, the sound effects were genuine, and everything flowed together relatively seemlessly. I have played through FFXIII multiple times, and I'll enjoy it for years to come.
I just think that people should actually pay attention to what's actually going on within the game. Think of who's talking, think of the type of place you're in, play through the entire game, look at what is happening within the game, and then give a solid opinion on your own observations instead of basing it primarily on what others have told you. I haven't finished XIII-2 yet, so I'm not going to comment on that game until I do because it has multiple endings, which means that it requires multiple plays, and I haven't seen everything that the game has to offer yet. -

Also, it's quite interesting that you complain about the gambit system (which is 100% optional, you can easily control your entire party) and didn't say anything about FFXIII's battle system, which didn't even let you issue basic strategy to your non optionally AI controlled team and that most battles can be resolved by spamming "auto attack" then pressing L1 every once in a while to switch paradigms before spamming "auto attack" a bit more.
And your point about linearity kinda gets blown up when you realize that exploration on Pulse, a non artificial world, is as linear as it was on Cocoon. Only the Steppes and it's immediate surroundings have some freedom or exploration, every place after the steppes is comprised of corridors just the same as it was on cocoon. -

In order to get the media to re-review the game you need to release it with a sub title such as an expansion. So if you look at FFXI you can see that FFXI: ToAU has 5 stars on Amazon, WoTG has 4. This is opposed to the original FFXI that has only 3 1/2. New product = new reviews.
SE knows this so have faith that we will see fair and new reviews for 2.0 when it lands, the proper thing is getting the product good. Advertising helps as well though.
The thing that bugs me is the people who work at the retails stores like Game Stop. They berate the crap out of XIV and I doubt any of them have played anything other than beta. -
