Minfilia or Lyse?

Minfillia for me. I don't understand the hate either. EVERY NPC does the whole. come here go here overthere crap people insert Min for. You might as well hate EVERYONE cause EVERYONE does that. NO npc EVER doesn't do it. So by that judgement alone EVERYONE SUCKS. At least Minfillia looks better than half the npcs who ask you to water their freaking plants, clean their shit bowls and pack their backs with mailing their bear asses to their mother. :/

There are two major reasons for that.

1) No one else pulls you to the Waking Sands repeatedly, sometimes even more than once in a single quest. Waking Sands is the worst place to go to. The fastest option to get to it involves a teleport to Limsa Lominsa, Aethereryte port to Arcanists guide and using the boat services. After that you need to get into the Waking Sands and into that room. That's three loading screens to get to the town and two more loading screens to talk with Minfilia, paying two transport fee's (at earlier levels it actually may be a pain). Alternative...walk a long way from Horizon. Again and again and again.

2) No one else tells you to come to her through the linkpearl only to hear you make an inconsequential report "Did you kill X primal?", "Yes, I killed it.", only to send you back to the same place "So go back and help with the cleaning job.". If she actually used the linkpearl to get those reports and send to the next destination, I assure you, people would take it WAY better. But how that is it's piling stupid to tedious.

Minfillia gets my vote.

Neither of them appeal to me because they're both cliche.

If I had to chose then Minifila (because she was not traveling with us the whole time) but if not then neither. Minfilia was still too bland at the end and even though I do understand that she did lots of work behind the scenes it was not helping that we never truly saw something of that, that she was often helpless in dangerous situations, that she called us back instead of maybe meeting us somewhere and she also never noticed that for example Thancred was overworking himself.

Lyse is just annoying imo. I liked her more as Yda because her relationship and behavior with Papalymo was funny. Out on her own and suddenly her sister made her not that much likeable for me. At the beginning she was all full of herself and blaming the people that had been in the Ala Mhigo the whole time while she was traveling around the world. She seemingly could not understand why people have lost their will to fight. I also dont like it that she got the leader position just because she is a "figurehead" and the daugther of someone famous. In all the time I felt that M'naago and Raubahn did a better job.

For me the most interesting female is still Alisaie. She can fight, is sarcastic (even though its sometimes a bit extreme) and seemingly likes us as a person.

The thing that annoyed me about Alisaie though is in SB Alphinaud kept sidelining her pretty much - I admit I'm not an Alphinaud hater, but everytime he told her to stay put while he went off with the player to investigate something I just wanted to punch him for being so sexist (I know he was only looking out for her, being the protective older brother, but it still came across as misguided at best and throughly misogynistic at worst).

Not that Alisaie really helped herself in one particular instance either (the 4.0 Lakshmi fight) - surely she should have known that trying to reason with a Primal was a very bad idea? And she nearly got herself and her brother tempered for her trouble (only being saved by the WoL using a previously unseen application of the Echo to shield them).

I still really like her though, it's just how SE has handled her character in SB that disappointed me. :(

Lyse one would have thought with the Stormblood trailer and all that she would have a big part in Stormblood. One could almost forget about her as she got very little screentime.
I also agree that i prefered her as Yda with Papalimo.

So out of the 2 i guess Minfilia for me.

I'd go for Minfilia too. Especially having played 1.x and seeing her story when she was known as Ascillia.

I love Lyse and I never liked Minfilia, so the choice is clear to me.

I disliked Minfilia because she always treated the WoL as a dog, and for some unknown reason she seemed to be portrayed as a very special person (even Hydaelin called her and only her, I don't know why). I could never sympathize with her at all.

Lyse, on the other hand, has always been very innocent, positive and pure. She's been doing her best for everyone and for overcoming her weakness. I don't know if the fact I play the game with the original Japanese voices helped, but Lyse is a character I could always sympathize with. I find her presence comforting!

I'd have to go with Minfillia but it's close.

Both Minfillia and Lyse suffer from the story telling us about them rather than showing us. I dislike both to be honest, but I think a lot of my irritation with Minfillia was more to do with the MSQ forcing us to run to the Waking Sands repeatedly than with her as a character.
She is woefully underdeveloped. She does a lot of background work, which we never see; we never even see her working at her desk! Most of the time, she's just standing around and looking pretty.
I never really saw her as a strong leader or particularly courageous yet, the story implies she is both. It appears she was tortured when she was held captive at the Castrum but aside from that one vicious kick from Livia, we don't see any evidence of that (sorry to say, I rather enjoyed that kick first time through). When we rescue her, she has perfect hair, no bruises or any other sign of injury, which completely diminishes her having not given them any information. Since going through the MSQ on my alts and picking up on all the things she does off-stage, I've warmed to her a lot more.

Lyse replaced a character I liked with Minfillia mark II - they both have nice hair and nice frocks but do absolutely nothing in-game to justify the position they hold or the respect others seem to have for them. Add in Lyse's implausible personality change and a back story I really couldn't care less about and she's hard to like. Her big reveal simply suggested mental health issues to me and that's not a good quality in a leader.

I miss the Yda-Papalymo double act, I enjoyed the exchanges between them and the comically stupid things that Yda said at times. Lyse is just bland. It's like they felt we needed another pretty, forgettable blonde to hands out quests occasionally.

I prefer Minfilia for two big reasons.

I think they're both ok, they don't do anything that makes them bad characters, but nothing that really makes them stand out as great characters either.

With the exception of Minfilia, I've noticed the likeability of a character goes down when we travel with them, at least going by this tread.

Minfilia unfortunately suffers from the unfortunately 'quest design' lets say of ARR and its patches. By the time they started improving on that she was mostly written out of the story, though she's just 'on a bus' and will probably return one day. I try not to hold that against her. I don't see the 'come back to vesper bay' as a character flaw so much as a quest design flaw.

I also don't particularly mind her being a non combatant. First time she gets kidnapped, the entire Scion base was overrun, many people killed, and if I remember right (haven't done arr msq in forever) she wasn't even the only one taken. Then when she's kidnapped the second time, it's done keeping Louis' super magic staff from being taken by an Ascian. Unless there's more incidents I'm forgetting, she seems to have a reputation for being kidnapped more than it actually happened like Daphne in the original scooby doo cartoons.

Lyse got some points for me just for being less annoying than 'Yda' was in ARR. However, her arc to becoming resistance leader was rushed and not at all earned. This is in part due to the rushed feeling of 4.0's msq in general. The split between Ala Mhigo and Doma hurt both stories. They both feel rushed, both victories feel too easy. The only real moments of adversity I can recall are our two beatdowns from Zenos, which lack consequences because he decides to leave after kicking our butts. (The garleans also just let the Resistance keep Rhalgr's Reach, wth?) And then there's the cannon blast. Other than those it feels like we just steamroll the garleans. The 'third act' in particular where we return to ala mhigo, and the Lochs especially, feels a bit rushed too like the writers are in a hurry to get us through the rest of the msq. Honestly it really feels to me like they 'had' to do Ala Mhigo to get it out of the way, but WANTED to do Doma. But that's a topic for another thread.

In short I guess I'm not really much a fan of either character, though I would like them to add Lyse's ala mhigan red dress into the game.

I don't really see this as a problem to be honest given that the WOL is pretty much just a player self insert and the story never ceases praising us and making us the center of attention. What does Lyse do that actually steals attention away from the WOL? Sure she gets a moment here or there I guess like getting the finishing blow on Lakshmi int he 4.1 fight by and large I never felt like the focus was being taken away from the WOL.

On a re-play for a datacenter alt, at least until Yanxia I'm finding Lyse more likeable / believable than her reputation. I know much of it has to do with Conrad foisting her up around Ala Ghiri, but I recall being more annoyed by the personality change the first time around.

Perhaps it's a matter of having less of a gap this time, but it feels... smoother? Like it feels like she's still "Yda", but under the shackles of having to actually give a damn because Papalymo's not there to make decisions for her. With the pressure of her father's shadow and resulting expectations etc. So that part of her personality is changed, but it feels reasonable; otherwise she's still kinda dumb and likes to punch things.

Not sure if I'll feel different by the time SB is through though.

Allow me to re-word it: they get everything handed to them, making it hard to believe that they get to where they do, and forcing us to see them as protagonist characters on par with many others. Especially Lyse, which got put as a leader when she did no actions or took any decisions worthy of deserving that over other characters (M'naago? Or anyone else that had been in the Resistance for ages?). Hien, for example, which didn't need to do it because he was the heir, still earned his place by acting like a leader and doing actual stuff. I think that that's part of the problem, that we got these other characters side by side and it's easier to see the flaws.

Hopefully Lyse will get more development in the future without being gone like Minfilia before doing that. Still, that won't change how she got to where she is right now.

Oh that I can agree with. I don't feel like Lyse draws attention away from the WOL but definitely got the job too easily. I think part of this was because of the Ala Mhigo/Doma split. With so much of the msq being done overseas, Lyse didn't have the time to properly grow into that role and it felt rushed.

Minfilia idk. She was just already leading the scions by the time we join in 2.0 and a lot of her job is doing boring leadership stuff we don't really need to see much of.

I think this was definitely a big problem in the climax of the game actually.
When Zenos is defeated and is about to kill himself, he's giving this whole speech about how grandiose the event was because he got to fight the Warrior of Light and stuff like that, then Lyse comes along and takes what could have been a meaningful moment between the player and Zenos and just starts spouting what she thinks of Zenos for no reason, as if she had any right to confront him lol, it's actually surprising that Zenos even acknowledges her at that point.

Then you get the big dramatic leap where she's all "nooo don't kill yourself" like ooo the struggle! Lyse you go girl, such a noble character, I'm glad she was able to bond with Zenos in a twisted way to make that scene and her motivations justifiable... or am I thinking of another character and Lyse just happens to be hogging the spotlight for some reason?

While I wasn't too much a fan of Minfilia, I was really disappointed by Lyse. I liked Yda a lot and even though I know she was playing her part, I still figured she might turn out as a strong character for the story. But she literally did nothing during Stormblood. Makes you appreciate Minfilia at least a little bit.

I'm sorry, but I just cannot agree with that.

All the big cases were solved by us. We've thus seen all of them and their management.

And the smaller stuff and intelligence gathering?! Yeah. In every meeting I can think of, the people that came out with the task distribution were actually...the ones that did them. Sorry, but asking "Who's going to go to X?" is neither hard nor worthy of mention. She couldn't even do a single thing well, convince the host to make an aetheryte in town without ending up on his leash.

Literally the only thing I can remember her doing is call all those pointless meetings or pass messages from one to the other. That's a secretary's work at best. And though that's certainly important...it's the kind that can be done by anyone else in absence of one. So nothing special.

Now, you can say all you want that "she worked in the background"...but what kind of work was exactly left?! Money? Nope, that's Tataru Taru. Information gathering? That's divided into Urianger for research of phenomenon and magic (plus Yshtola for some), and Yshtola, Yda with Papalymo and Thancred for field work. Diplomacy?! Yeah, from the moment he became a Scion, Alphinaud did that (often with us in tow). What's left?! Sweeping the floor, maybe. And playing a gopher moving messages from one person to another. No wonder she called the Warrior of Light every possibility she had, she wanted to vent on the only person that actually allowed themselves to be pushed around.

Eh, maybe I'd agree but I was so disinterested in zenos as a character that I didn't really care when he had his 'farewell my friend my enemy' line. The reason the scene bugs me isn't that another character showed up, but that we were specifically told NOT to take Zenos alive before going into Ala Mhigo, but then after the quest it's all 'nooooo don't kill yourseeeeeeelf you coward.' It's like the game forgot that it told us not to take Zenos alive anyway.

In between every interesting discussion about primals and ascians there are weeks and months of the regular day to day meetings and office work that we have no involvement in.

Lyse punted a Namazu so hard she left him with stars over his head for four cutscenes.

Minfinila never seemed to understand how linkpearls worked. "Please travel all the way across Eorzea so I can talk to you"

More recently, Alisae spoke about the diplomatic ties that Minfillia had forged with various organisations and how they would be invaluable in solving the present crisis, but we didn't see any of that diplomacy. Most of the time Minfillia was just standing around in her room doing nothing. Tataru, who is only the receptionist, gets a lot more time on screen and a lot more character development. It's poor writing imo; actions speak louder than words and despite being an supposedly important character in the story, Minfillia wasn't given an active role. I think that is the big problem that I have with Minfilia too. We saw how all the other scions did their important part in the task (even if most of the fighting was still done by us) but we never really saw Minfilia doing something important. Maybe this could have been done by giving us some side quests with her, where we are acting as some kind of bodyguard while she does all the diplomatic stuff? Or maybe have some scenes with her (after we got her the dagger) where we are helping her with a bit of self defence because she feels that she needs to be able to protect herself. Even if she still was kidnapped it would feel at least like she is trying to improve herself in that part. Because she should know that she is a big target and having no single experience in fighting is just bad. I mean even Tataru tried her best with the carbuncle.

Its just sad that she is told to be such an important character, yet do we really feel her absence? I mean the scions even said that they dont need a leader right now and Tataru seemingly handles the rest quite well.

Do you want my honest opinion?! The people in managerial positions I've come across in real life were actually quite useless most of the time.

1) They did paperwork that shouldn't even have been needed, just because some higher-tier manager was equally needing something to "do", so they made a new responsibility that no one needed.
2) They tried to tell someone that knows better how to do something for the fact of actually doing it, how to do it. Often to the detriment...because these managers never actually did the job they were talking about, so they didn't know a thing bout it.
3) If they felt bored and felt like being actually creative, they tried to do something that's part of another persons responsibility.


Now, don't get me wrong. I know those are few examples and anecdotal to boot, but they had something in common. Those were parts of jobs where workers were pretty much self-sufficient. In jobs that are either very repetitive or necessitate fast response, self-sufficiency is MANDATORY. And there is nothing that requires fast response more than a havoc-wreaking, brainwashing god that seeks to devour everything. That's why the Scions are self-sufficient. And that's why Minfilia is so badly written (not only her, mind you, but she's the only character that have such a scope that is this badly written).

Not only does she not show any signs of...doing anything (and say what you about it being too boring to show, but there was no reason to not show a cutscene when entering the atrium with Minfilia sitting behind a pile of papers, signing or stamping them at least)...but she actually sends the player on crap quests while there's a potentially continent-scale calamity upon the world.

What office work?! Excuse me, but is it a company under legal contracts having to make reports to some force above?!

Sorry, but Scions were always (in 2.0+ at least) a group of people that are together only because of a common goal. They do not actually answer to anyone. The major duty was actual contact with the three Grand Companies, yes, because three major nations military forces were more prone to get information about troubles brewing fast than a relatively small group of volunteers. But the actual "paperwork" beyond the finances should have been kept to minimum. ESPECIALLY outside of the hectic times. If nothing was happening...what was that paperwork actually for?!


The point stands. Minfilia could have been shown doing something. She could have been shown meeting with Merlwyb, Kan-E-Senna or Raubahn, she could be shown actually managing people even if briefly. Instead her only presence was to call a meeting where she said what someone else told her (Urianger most often) then told the person in question to tell that same thing just in more detail. These meetings were basically holding themselves with how everyone have been deciding for themselves with minimal to no input from her. Other than that it was just calling the player character back and forth over the pettiest reports that could have been done over the linkpearl.

So yes. She did suck in the very little work she was supposed to do, because with how much trouble was brewing, Warrior of Light as the most important field agent should NEVER even need to come to the "headquarters". If Minfilia's job was to manage tasks, then SHE FAILED horribly. You don't drag someone halfway across the continent to you for a report when there's numerous things for that person to do all around. You have them make that report while on their way to their next destination. If it's of the top-secret sort, you find ways for them to make it so. By sending a messenger, for example.

Do you really think the organization just runs itself? Someone has to make sure all the employees get paid, and that the rent is paid, and that the Rising Stones break room is stocked, and that all the investors are still happy, and that those two scouts who hate each other don't get assigned to the same recon team, etc... All that and a million other little things that keep the place going. We just don't see any of it because of the vast majority of the day to day is boring and unimportant to us.

I don't dislike either of them, but I lean towards Lyse over Minfilia. Lyse wasn't given enough character development, yeah, but Minfilia wasn't given any from what I could see. I don't feel like I knew her, just... an idea of her, more or less. And I liked that idea, but she didn't feel like an actualized character. When she disappears, I'm more concerned with the impact her absence has on the other characters than in her being absent.

This, pretty much. I've played through SB twice. The first playthrough, I had high expectations for Lyse's character development and her rise to being a great leader (like Hien, or Aymeric) and I was severely disappointed. On the second playthrough, I had zero expectations because my opinion was the same as most people here (great potential, zero payoff) and I was pleasantly surprised to note that Lyse DOES go through character development, even if it doesn't exactly qualify her in the way the story tries to force. She starts off not understanding why anyone would NOT want to fight back and refusing to acknowledge the validity of opposing POVs, and by the end she's trying to reconcile those different perspectives to come to mutual understanding. She's capable of relating to others and inspiring them to fight on a personal level, and in that respect she makes a decent figurehead leader. As noted by a few people in this thread, though, she's overshadowed in practically every aspect by other characters like Hien and Raubahn, making her growth seem redundant by comparison. And she is hyped up by people like Konrad WAY too much, in a way that doesn't feel earned. But I also found her relatable in her insecurities and uncertainty, and therefore she was likeable.

I simply didn't feel that way with Minfilia at all.

Aymeric? You mean the spoiled guy who does literally NOTHING for you until you're forced to go to his homeland and does nothing then but sit in a seat and give you random task like .. every other NPC ever? Why he gets a pass but Min doesn't is deyond me. Least SHE was there for us i nthe beginning until she was kidnapped by the mother crystal. Where was pretty boy? - hiding behind a big wall. :/

I too remember when Minfilia tried stopping the main villain of the story on her own without even asking for our help, or leading an assault against her own rogue troops to save a little peasent girl, or accompanying the Warrior of Light to a trial to determine whether she was worthy of facing one of the strongest wyrms alive and thus ending a thousand-year conflict...

Joke all you want, but nothing and I mean NOTHING gets done unless WE do it. So again by that logic all of them are useless. oh boo hoo he saved a child. I'm the main character and I saved the PLANET, get on my level. But none of the NPCs will cause they are nothing but quest givers at the end of the day. So why hate one when they all do the same thing. provide quest for YOU to do on your own. :/

Regarding - Minfilia - aka "Princess Peach" after I had to rescue her a couple times.

I can only say - Good riddance - she was starting to annoy me at the end there.

Neither one. Minfilia made me teleport back and forth to Horizon and Lyse is still the sorriest excuse for character progression in this game.

Minfilia at least has some value as character.
Yes, she is not a fighter, but she is a a commander, and the scions actually depended on her organization skills, yes, some bad stuff happens (the story has to move forward) and the quests might have been a bit too tedius after 50 levels. But she fulfilled a valuable role in the storyline and lore.

Lyse on the other hand.
First off, we lost Yda which was great, and fun, and great. Then we get this poster girl that is ABSOLUTELY irrelevant to the storyline, like, she could perfectly NOT BE THERE and everything would be the same. Like, i got so pissed when SHE walked in front of ME or EVERYONE ELSE THAT DID ACTUALLY HELP RETAKE ALA MHIGO and she did what, be the daughter of someone important, wtf.

I sincerely hope Lyse dies, really, i would even make youtube videos to celebrate it.

He's the same guy that took Haurchefant's place in being one of the very few real friends (how many of those we actually have? we can count with one hand the people that love the WoL as an individual, and not as a weapon/tool) that will support us no matter what (something that he did from the start, but more so as time passed), even confronting his own people. You can't just go and start fighting like a mad man (or woman, in Lyses' case), and Aymeric showed us that he can be patient despite everything that he had on his shoulders, both from responsibility and also from his own family issues. And regardless of that, he was also working behind the curtains as much as he could to make things change in a place with such stubborness for "tradition" and "they did something to us but we don't know what anymore" like Ishgard. He's also the first of Ishgard's leaders that was open and wise enough to accept peace with the dragons, to open the city-state towards the rest of Eorzea, and that made it join the Eorzean Alliance once more. All that done by a man that doesn't want the power, and that is still working to make a new form of government where he is not needed, despite people wanting him to stay. I think that he has done more than enough, even almost dying while doing it and still working for what he believed in with the wound still fresh. It doesn't look like what a spoiled guy would do.

On the other hand we have Lyse, who did literally nothing useful other than tagging along while the rest of us (WoL, Alphinaud, Hien, Yugiri, Gosetsu, M'naago, Arenvald, etc.) did everything in Gyr Abania and Othard. And after that she gets appointed as the Resistance leader, and a key person in Ala Migho because of reasons (just because her dad and her sister, Yda, actually did things?), instead of giving that position to someone more experienced, who had more knowledge, and who deserved it more.

Let's be honest here. If both Minfilia or Lyse hadn't been part of the story, everything would've happened the same way. Well, outside of having to rescue them or fixing their mistakes, of course. And of the WoL having to travel around less, in Minfilia's case. They are not key, or needed, but the game tries to keep telling us that they are without showing us why. Even Tataru has done more than both of them combined.

I don't hate them, but I find it hard to like them either because of the way that they've been written. Especially when you compare them with other characters that have even made me care about them with their actions (this includes enemies).

I like Minfilia and never really could warm up to Lyse all that much.
