Unfortunately, as is true in life, if you cannot afford to spend the money on the subscription you regretabbly shouldn't play the game then. You should instead use your money on a more important need until such a time that you can both sustain yourself and your hobbies. If your budget doesn't support your needs and hobbies you can find yourself slowly falling into debt or other issues caused by debt which can set you on a crash course that is hard to recover from.

Just because you want something doesn't mean you can always have it. Understanding and sacrificing what you don't need is unfortunately one of the many parts of being responsible with your money.

If it is absolutely necessary for you to spend your money on a subscription regardless despite being choked on your budget, you should not be using a renewal auto charge to a card but instead use pay cards to add time to your account when you can afford it.

If they would give us a proper glamour system people wouldn't need to be pack rats, but I digress. I do this myself as needed. I have a separate retainer for a few categories, but I only run...2-3 extra retainers on a monthly basis. The others I will start up only if I need the space momentarily, and they will be promptly deactivated afterwards....well, a month later at least.

The best advice I can give is to be more careful and watch your spending. If you have everything under the sun tacked onto your subscription, of course it's going to go through the roof for a multiple month payment.
And just as many have said, nothing is hidden with the mogstation, all the totals are right out in the open. Notification emails are sent out before the payments hit. You don't really have any fingers to point here.

I agree completely, but what I pointed out had nothing to do with budgets, so I'm not sure why you quoted it on a post that didn't pertain to anything I said.

What I was discussing was the relative cost for players with different schedules. If you go all out and are paying $1 a day (I'll use that rounded figure for comparisons here) and you're playing every day, that's $1 for each play session. If you're paying the same amount, but playing a couple times a week, it's $3.50 per play session. If you're paying the same amount, but playing a couple times a month, it's $15 for each play session. Your per session or per hour costs vary widely depending on how active you are.

That's what makes subscription games a far better deal for people who tend to focus on one interest at a time and spend all their free time on that particular game (until they tire of it and drop it completely in favor of a new interest) than it is for people who might be actively playing a dozen different games, be in the middle of several different book series, several TV shows, a bunch of different craft projects, and active in several clubs, etc. and are continuously alternating back and forth a bit of time here and there for each.

Everything these days has pay creep.

TV Bill $1-5 a year increase unless you call in.
Internet Bill $1-5 a year increase unless you call in.
Phone Bill $1-5 a year increase unless you call in.

Gaming as a service.
I don't see the added value in the extra fee they creep in. I think $2 for a retainer is steep.
I don't see how 200 Data base entries should equal $2

If you dont see the added value in an extra retainer, dont pay for one? Its not like they sneakly increased our base-sub or decided to charge for our two standard retainers... and even though I'm paying for two extra retainers aswell and even though they keep adding items: you can get by with only the two standard retainers... so, you really dont have to pay extra, if you dont feel its worth it for you.

Umm...wow. i love this game too, But that's just overkill imo.

Speaking for myself as a 4* omnicrafter with all but 3 DoW at max level, I have 6 retainers (2 base 4 extra) and I've got about 80 spaces spare on each of them. I probably didn't sit well sure I didn't I do have free spots both in my inventory and in my retainers. One reason why I store all that stuff is if I were to drop it all as you suggested or as it appears as you suggested that means I would have to go back and get all that stuff again if I was to get the items related to those mats items in etcetera. But having them with me if it's some point I decide to make this item or get this item I'll already have at least some of the requisite items already in hand. You can call it hoarding if you want and I suppose it is but why I get rid of something if you might use later on specially it's a hard to get.

I have never run into a material that I can't just buy off of the market board whenever I need it. Generally, the only cost you're paying is the market board tax, because you already sold the item in the past, you're just paying what your received before to get it back.

It's even more convenient than figuring out where your item is, because you can't even craft from your retainer's inventory. Just search up the item, buy it, and there it is, in your inventory.

Eh, I have 3 extra retainers and they're almost all full (5 total). Mostly with gear (currently have 200/200 glamour dresser) I don't want to re-farm but a LOT of them are currencies I don't want to have to farm again. Currencies. . . despite having a currency tab that SE refuses to update.

Every new raid is 7 extra currencies in normal, more on savage, plus EX totems. This game has so much item bloat it's insane.

Well, you can't craft from the MB's inventory either. Either go to your retainer, pick up the item, and it's there in your inventory, or go the MB, find listings for the item, buy the best priced one(s), and it's there in your inventory. Neither is difficult (providing the item is available and you have tons of gil) but the former is more convenient than the later.

For the retainer you have to go to use your search function, go to the right retainer, and then find the item. MB you just search and it's right there. MB is far more convenient.

You obviously have gil. You've sold all your items if you use the MB instead of retainers.

Now, if you could craft from your retainers, that would change. You wouldn't need to find the item. But that's not the case.

That is correct most items can be But off the market board I usually don't buy aftermarket board if I can help it for I can craft the item or gather it I usually won't buy off the market board unless it's The only real option or something else. One way to explain would be If I'm making an item and requires said item as a material for I have that in stock from whenever that saves me time and money because I don't have to go gather it and I don't have to buy it off the market board or NPC. Some I say fine is easier but when you're poor you have to be frugal when you can to get make the items you want.

I count 14 "current" currencies. 7 NM, 4 savage, 2 24 man, and Suzaku, that isn't bloat. Any others are irrelevant and should be thrown away unless you're saving for primal mounts, since you can go back and farm them easily due to gear creep. Why are you holding on to them?

I don't see why the fact you can manage your items is justification for Enix charging more than twice a regular sub fee if you want the amount of storage space other games offer for free.

I have 2 retainers and I'm a lv70 omnicrafter/gatherer. So I manage. But I don't see it as a positive point that I have a fraction the amount of storage that I did in WoW. It would be nice to have more storage. For example, one of the first things I did at 70 was reduce all my non-endgame HQ mats to NQ. But then frequently friends or FC are leveling crafters and I wished I still had that stack of 520 HQ twincoon to pass over to them since it would help them a ton. I can't even pop them in the Company Chest because that has no storage too.

The cost of max bag space is excessive. Tbh even 1 more free retainer would be great.

+one tier prior currencies which are current for newer players (or alt jobs) so at least 14 more slots

+ Cracked Clusters, Anemos Lockbox, Pagos lockbox, Anemos Crystal, Pagos Crystal, Protean Crystal, Paz feathers, Louhi Ice, glamour prisms . . . There are even more than that I don't care to list. Hydaelyn help you if you're a gatherer or crafter.

I'll absolutely admit I'm a gear hoarder, I have to do that because the glamour dresser is so bad. But it's pretty ignorant to insinuate this game doesn't have item bloat, it's extremely blatant.

The large majority of those inventory slots should be in the currency tab, but SE doesn't because retainer money.

It's no justification at all. It's ludicrous that F2P and B2P games offer better storage options than this game. At the very least, we should be given +1 free retainer per expansion.

I've had things all lined up correctly in spreadsheets, and then one time a company decided to take out a montly payment before or after they were supposed to. And no, you cannot ask them to not do that. Nor can you account for emergencies, like emergency gas or needing a taxi cause the BUS you were to take from the city wasn't RUNNING .. ARGH!

As for the OP, yes, you do get an e-mail a few days ahead, and yes, there really isn't much you can do. I wish I could help, but I'm in the same boat as you due to certain life situations. Keeping my fingers crossed you can get some monetary help!

I mean, I feel for the OP right now too, but it does make sense to be sure exactly what you're you're getting yourself into and what it'll cost before you click that button. Also, if you're living on a budget, it's always wise to pay attention to where you can cut corners and save. I consider myself to be on a limited budget. I'm nowhere near driving myself into the red by spending $200 on any one thing, because for every expense, I weigh my options and consider whether I can get the same benefits for less elsewhere, or whether I even need the item or service in the first place. I get that sometimes there are unexpected expenses and whatnot, but I still think there's good advice to be taken from this thread, and it also shines a light on the micro-transaction and subscription bloat in this game, which can't be a bad thing.

When you start a conversation in public, be prepared to take criticism. I've lived from paycheck to a week before the next paycheck. It sucks, but you have to manage your money well. If you're really that tight, you shouldn't be dropping $200 on anything that isn't rent, car payment, or a utility bill.

If a price tag of $192 is a shock for someone out of the blue, it has less to do with the company suddenly taking out a monetary payment and more to do with the person not taking into account of what he/she is purchasing and actually really reading what they click and agree to.

And actually, if it's a utility bill, you most certainly can call up the company and ask them to wait if it's a few days or change your due date if it's possible. Is it 100% certain that all utility companies do this? No. But, it never hurts to call them and you'd be surprised how some will work with you. In fact, they appreciate you calling them rather than being late on a payment for a few days with no communication whatsoever between you and the utility company.

I work two jobs and I am constantly keeping an eye on where and what money is being spent on. It's not hard to be responsible with your money. You just don't allow yourself to impulse buy without making sure it doesn't put you in the red.

And yes, XIV is an impulse buy. It's not a necessity and you should never prioritize your bills or rent/mortgage over the game.

I'm (thankfully) not as short on cash as I used to be, but I still like to keep careful track of where it goes and when. I pay my sub with Crysta rather than directly by credit card so that it won't auto-renew, and needs my approval each time. And each time I buy exactly the number of crysta I need for just that specific purchase. It can never take me by surprise that way and take more than I was expecting, because it doesn't have any more crysta available than what I was expecting. (The only downside is that every few months I'll get locked out of the game until I go to the MogStation to renew it, but that only takes a few minutes, so not much of an inconvenience.) That's something I'd recommend for anyone who needs to stick to a strict budget.
