Cooldowns should be the only penalty. WS animation lock isn't anything bad at all if you make fights that don't make it inconvenient (Looking at you, Ifrit!).

i dont get what people want instead though. No animations just cause people cant time stuff?
and how would a cool down be a penalty for doing big damage. Its just a timer for when you cause it again, its not penalizing you
ifrt is the most predictable mob in game, you shouldn't get stuck in an locks.
In FFXI maybe, but in FFXIV, the battle system is faster paced and depends heavily on positioning to get your combos inputted.
Most MMO's don't have animation lock when using a WS, being able to control your character while using a special ability, unless there is a cast timer on it. FFXIV is sort of aiming toward this type of system. However, even FFXIV doesn't have a fast paced method that other MMO's do, so an animation lock still kind of makes sense. The problem is that developers did not put this into mind when they created Ifrit.
While yes, Ifrit is predictable now, it isn't right that you are caught in it simply because the game wouldn't allow you to move, especially with the lag issues it presents.
Simply put, people won't complain about animation lock if SE makes fights that don't make it an inconvenience.
Ifrit imo was made to make people plan there moves, not nonstop WS. he only has like 50k hp which if everyone is doing aound 8-10k damage wont take more then 7-10 mins to beat, If you could attack faster it would only be like a 3 min fight every time.
There is plenty of tie for long animation skill in ifrit.
the pld should turn into a white dragon and explode and then spin around into a pulpy blood tornado EPIC
Looking at the class reform info, this WS is the final step of a combo following a block.
The animation perfectly makes sense with its role, in my opinion.
(animation lock wouldn't be that bad if there wasn't lag from server side UI / bad server causing these issues)
By the by, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqoaPWyLE1g this is one of the PLD WS's in FFXI (BLU and RDM can use it too, but it's more linked to PLD.)
It doesn't need to be flashy, but that does prove the point about people when they expect things lol. Flashy =/= good quality because being too flashy actually distracts you from the design of the root animation, which in FFXIV is some of the best.
Either way you look at this Syn doesn't mean it's NOT broken. lol Sure, 90% or more of us have learned how to beat Ifrit. But just because we CAN doesn't mean the way we do it is correct. This isn't a 'feature' and it's NOT 'working as intended' it's broke and as I said before, SE knows it's broke so regardless of how it should be done now and what most of the population does to win Ifrit, it's still broke dude. ;)
i've to see it with graphical effect and with some better graphics than model viewer :3
I like this PLD WS. It looks cool to me how he flipped the sword with his wrist and catches it before the back hand stab. Very cool and stylish in my book.
BTW WS like Requiescat etc = Over exaggerated. I tend to dislike over exaggerated stuff. thats my opinion so deal with it :P
No one gave props the the PLD AF ; ;
That's what I don't get about most of the people on here's opinion of this weapon skill. Because this game's graphics are so amazing and real, it can make legitimate weapon skills that still look crazy even though they fit the realism the game has while still squeezing in some pizzazz. (See: Simian Thrash, Doomspike II, Arrow Helix, Rage of Halone)
Most of the tacky tricks other lower-quality (graphically) MMOs use to make the game look better wouldn't work here. I'm also kind of surprised how much the forums flips back and forth on certain topics. First there's a general (although well deserved) disappointment in the blandness of current skills/weapons/etc. The forum cries for more "fantasy feel". A flood of nerdrage threads emerge about how <insert various negative adjectives> the Ifrit weapons were. Then it happened again with the moogle weapons. New weapon skills come out? Oh wait, they aren't flashy enough. Too bad the "flashy enough" line is so thin we'll never see it. lol
Personally, I'm really excited to see it with particle effects, I'm excited =D. What I'm not excited about is only being able to use it once in a blue moon because blocking proc rate is garbage. When I do miraculously block (usually only thanks to Aegis Boon), War Drum is up. Phalanx, my favorite skill, depressingly sits unused on the end of the action bar... likely never to see a Spirits Within combo in any real fight.
No..but I want to be able to do my stupid flashy move and move around at the same time. Like Dante in DMC. inb4 compares to other vidya games lol. I've played plenty of other "MMO" that allow me to do WS and move around at the same time. and these are OLD MMO! That is why I keep saying..I wish SE keep up with the times! There is so much cool stuff out there they can add but idk..:(
Yeah, I was expecting something more like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f3woBOc8pY .
Honestly it works since Paladin should stand their ground with strong and precise sword/shield strikes. Leave all that jumping around to Dragoon and Monks. Maybe Bard. :p
As for future Paladin related stuff, hopefully we'll see quest cutscenes similar to this when obtaining a Paladin jobstone (sure it'll have something to do with "casting off the darkness in your heart") and maybe some light jump forward and slash WS similar to the scene at the end.

If I was battle director......

Don't ask for pretty lights... I miss actually being able to see the animation for simian trash ;_;
Bodhum tank approved. Save the super flashy shit for dd's and maybe further down the line cap increases. Simple with a touch of flair. Hopefully some tasteful lighting effects will be added. Don't over do it, I'm looking at you simian blown up effects.
I'll be saving it for the finishing move when playing around.
I like the onther 2 ws vids in the playlist. :) Monk does really cool aerobic ws :D
Its probably going to be Spirit Within since the last time we saw that WS, it was a stabbing skill as well.
If you notice, the weapon skill is being used inside a modeler. The special effects might not be showing.
Looks like something that would look well as a combo to phalanx.
When they removed Luminous Spire in 1.20 I was hoping that it was because they had planned to make it a PLD WS.
Luminous Spire:
"Imbue your blade with brilliance, dealing astral damage and reducing the target's magic defense. Blinds other enemies near the target. Costs MP"
Seems like it would have made a nice sword ability for PLD, usefull for tanking and assisting mages in the party. Tank + party play is what PLD/Jobs is supposed to be about and the MP cost makes it that u need some strategy.
Spirits Within on the other hand is a plain thrust that does damage, use whenever the recast is up. It seems uninteresting and not useful, kinda annoying since we loose cross-class abilities for it.
I'm hopping for better Job defining sword skills in the higher levels.
btw i think this WS is spirit within
I think its beautifully done. Once they add some effects it will be subtle but effective looking. We don't need a 20 minute sequence of sparkles and explosions with flips and kicks to make an effective, modern skill.

I'm betting the link is dead since it appeared to be dat mined or leaked motions anyway.
