Not really development time wasted if there are people who try to get it. You may not want to try, but there are people that do.

I am a casual player that has been hunting since day 1. I have 733/2000 S ranks & 1376/3000 A ranks. This is totally doable. You can't expect to get every mount. I'm not a PVPer, so I don't expect to get those mounts. I'm not a raider and I will most likely not attain those mounts. I don't have mentor status as I could care less about being a healer, so that's another mount out of the question. I am a hunter, though, and that I will get. Each niche has its prize. You just have to work for it if you really want it.
You basically have to make hunting a full time job to get this mount. This is something so rare that it should have a crazy hidden ability such as being able to force spawn one S rank per day. This seems like one of those things that would go in the cash shop for like $500 but you can also "technically" earn it in game without spending extra money for it. This is that diadem i280 weapon all over again. As far as most people are concerned it might as well be 5k S ranks. Many people may think they can eventually get it but rare achievements like this are going to do more harm than good as they will burn players out and make them get frustrated and quit long before getting anywhere close.
Lets put it this way. Think about the top most active hunters and S rank spawners on your server. 95% of them are not even close to getting the mount. Just let that sink in. All in all I honestly wish there was a way that the game could track who spawned a S rank. Now THOSE people who spawned 100's if not 1000's of S ranks deserve a huge achievement like this.
Exagerration. "The most active spawners and hunters" already got the achievment for 500 a long, long
time ago, probably middle or early Heavensward.
Even I got that 1 month before SB got released, I have 2 linkshells and I don't even watch hunt tracker outisde of 'gear upgrade' phases.
Someone new? Too bad, but he has also to sub until 2021 to be able to get the highest veteran reward, so well, whatever?
And how do you spawn 1000 S-Ranks but don't get to kill at least 800-900 of them?
I downloaded the data of the last census, maybe achievemnt data are in there, but currently some people are heavily underestimating the hunts some people already did.
You people say you can get mentor mount easily. I say there will be a lot more tigers in a year than mentor mounts.
There's a character on Balmung named Mikha Sunthistle that had the mount as soon as Early Access launched (we used to be in the same FC, I ran into him in the Ruby Sea with the mount). However: He runs a hunting linkshell on Balmung and has ran it since hunts were introduced to the game - meaning he's likely been present for most of the A and S Rank spawns on Balmung. He's the only person I've seen with it.
i can see you spent 2 mio MGP on 3 mounts from the Gold Saucer. so you must be a Gold Saucer Maniac too, especially if you are a casual player as you said. grinding 2 mio MGP is no joke... oh, wait a moment, it actually IS a joke...
my niche is the Gold Saucer. i worked hard to get my grand prize. so why is everybody running around with Fenrir now?
if you can have my special prize, why is it okay that i can't have yours?
(okay, maybe you actually ARE a Gold Saucer Maniac, i don't know, but there are hundreds of people who clearly aren't, but running around with Fenrir and stuff, thanks to the weekly challange log - this was just an example^^ )
O Yes I am a Gold Saucer Maniac! I actually got Fenrir prior to the MGP buff we got some time back. I always teleported to the Gold Saucer every :15 & :45 minutes of every hour I wasn't doing any instances. When I set my mind to get something, I get it done! I already have 2.7 million MGP hoarded at this moment with every mount, minion, gambler outfit & Cloud card bought and nothing of interest to buy right now. I still play the events like crazy just in case there is something cool they add and is expensive, I will already have the MGP for it.
There are some people who hunt like other people raid. I don't resent this achievement even though I'll never own the mount if I play for another ten years, like I'll never be an Honest Gillionaire or win the Cactpot or place first in the Feast or get any of the mounts/achievements which require doing a ton of roulette or chocobo breeding/LoV. Occasionally seeing people with the stupidly rare achievements actually make the world of FFXIV more exciting to me.
"Mad" achievements with exclusive rewards are a good thing. Also, this is an MMO and some of the rewards are bound to be long term.
I am. I just streamline and focus my playing time to whatever goal I have set for that moment. There are lots of things I wish I could accomplish, but I don't have the time to do it, so I work on what I think is fun and it just happens to be hunts, Gold Saucer, MSQ, glamour, leveling certain jobs and chatting with friends.
Perhaps SE could add a white tiger mount to the cash shop.
I was more going for it being a prestige mount not really comparing difficulties. The point being they both take forever. 2000 mentor roulettes is no slouch either. Let's be generous and call each point taking at least 20 minutes (it's not even guaranteed since you might get an ex primal that doesn't clear or a long 45-60 min dungeon but you can also get a 5-10 min guildhest or in progress). 2000 x 20 minutes of doing nothing but mentor roulette is 667 hours of straight work.
If they really wanted a lot of people to get this it would be more manageable it would have been 1000/500 like the new tank mounts which are 300.
Yeah that does not sound casual at all. And you probably need lots of time for this. Also even if you say that you only do this content there is still a difference between Gold saucer and hunts. You can do gold saucer every hour/minute. I am quite sure that he would not have that much MGP if you are only able to do Gold saucer one hour a day or even a hour every two days. The same with mentor roulette. All of those things can be done at our own time. If you have a free day you can do nothing but roulette/gold saucer. With hunts you are always on a certain timer. And if you miss that one you will be out of luck for this S rang.
So you only have the chance to get this if you have hunted from the very beginning of its existence so this means for most people this is impossible to do for the next years. (And its even more telling that someone that did it from the beginning but not in a hardcore way is still only half way through) And to add further insult they put a mount behind that, that the players asked for yet most of them that asked for it will never have the chance to see it.
I am not liking the trend that SE puts some wanted mounts behind stuff that only a certain small amount of people will ever have, yet in normal fighting content we will get a whole bunch of the same mount in different colors..
lots of people asked for it , then they make it this difficult to get
It is a trend most people don't like. The thing is they are trying get people to do things most people don't like, so they put a valued prize at the end so people would give it a try. PVP is a good example as cool mounts were added to the ranking system and forced non-PVPers to give a try just for the prize. We may not like, but it will at least open people's eyes to how fun it could be if given the chance.
People hated on hunts since day 1. I liked it and kept hunting. Early hunters are going to get rewarded sooner than later for their persistence of doing content that was hated. I don't see anything wrong with that. I accept I won't get every item this game has to offer.
If you want that tiger mount so bad, then get huntin'! Right now that gear isn't overwhelming the A ranks and these fight are actually tough and fun to do. Give it a try. You might like it.
Been hunting since it was introduced in patch 2.3. Sitting at 301 S rank kills and 1,052 A rank kills. I've probably spent more time not hunting than actively hunting. I've echo'd more hunts than I've attended by at least four-fold. The only times I've hunted are when the upgrades come off of lock from raids and I can freely gear up other classes. It's not a hardcore achievement, but it does require time investment if you want the achievement "quickly."
People also forget there will be content droughts. Time periods where a ton of people are unsubbed waiting for a new patch to hit- these are your absolute best times to work on achievements like this one.
Here's an idea to consider that won't tire people of hunting marks for a reward that takes 5+ years to get:
1000 A ranks and 500 S ranks for the tiger mount
1500 A ranks and 1000 S ranks for the "ice tiger" Mount (like the one we see in Diadem's cave zone)
I wonder if it fly...
People need to understand that the length of the stick that the carrot is tied to is subjective to the person. If you find that the stick is too long then this mount is not meant for you. If you find the idea of completing that many hunts to not be fun, then don't do it; this mount is not meant for you. Not everything needs to be able to be acquired by everyone.
This mount is for bragging rights; bragging rights are more effective when the achievement is more absurd.
The achievement is fine the way it is.
They should not make a mount like this, one that's been wanted for a while by a lot of people in the community, barred behind such a high number where you're forced to co-operate with hundreds of other players for YEARS, many of which attack the hunt the moment they get there, making it even more difficult to get to hunts on time due to how long it can take to load in, including recent times where entire instances are crashing and things unspawn due to said crashing.
Don't know why they had to lock it behind an achievement in the first place. Why not with items you have to buy with your centurio seals instead? You'd still have to grind the hunts to get the seals for whatever items would be needed to turn in for it and it wouldn't take years to do so.
Hell I've been playing since the 2.x and am still nowhere near the ridiculous amount needed for it in part due to people not waiting. There have been times a hunt will be called and almost right away it's pulled because others don't like to wait. Putting it behind this achievement just feels like a way for them to make people waste their subscription time because they know how many people wanted a tiger mount.
I wouldn't call one tier down any less absurd. Personally, I couldn't care less. I'll get it eventually if I feel bothered to. That being said, I think what people dislike about this particular achievement is the time gate. They can't freely work on it at their own pace-- at least not like you would relics, mentor mounts or even the prior PvP rewards. There is a set restriction on hunts that spawn and what server you're on also influences it.
Mihka is 1 person, not "people", that has apparently been doing hunts as a hunter ls leader since their inception. This is a rare instance and doesn't negate the fact that the overall requirements are still too high. You can have grindy achievements without the need for it to take 5+ years.
Then it's not supposed to be for majority of players. If everyone will have it then it'll lose its value. Just look at best tribe mounts, nobody uses them because they are so common and require almost no effort to get.
I don't even playing from start of 2.0 and I take breaks, and I still have 6x more.

Try to join some hunt linkshells maybe?
The people who have it on Balmung were the people hunting out of passion during the content lulls, before there was rewards for hunting and the community was small enough that people would indeed wait for people to show up. Now there is this shiny new tiger mount on a stick, everyone and their mother wants to hunt and does not wait even for 1-2 minutes (which I think is the good waiting time). I've seen S Ranks drop in 10 seconds, with people pulling the exact moment they find it. Perhaps if these hunts were more frequent or non-soloable, it wouldn't be an issue.
How is that a problem? The rush will die down and the career hunters will still be there hunting mobs. If you're not among them, whose fault is that? You don't see them complaining that they can't get the Alexander mounts without putting in a decent amount of time to do so. Do the content or go without.
Hunts are also extremely plentiful right now, thanks to having five sets of them on account of SB being separated across three instances. For instance, I killed the same S rank three times in one day a couple of days ago.
Just because you personally can do that sort of thing, doesn't mean everyone can. This isn't a case of 'I can do it better than you' as not everyone can actually dedicate their entirety towards hunting. People have work, people have real life obligations, people need to sleep and most of all some people can only play for a limited amount of time (either due to net, or if they're younger then their parents.)
Why should the casual side of things get completely screwed just so SE can toss yet another long awaited mount behind yet another hardcore achievement lock? There are ways to make it take a while to get without being completely player biased.
