It would kind of cool if you turn into your summon lol kind of like in ff type 0 but without the dying.

A garlean fight needs to have one of the main enemies summon "Knights of Round" which is 12 other Garlean soldiers based on the FF7 KotR summon.

I wish they would do something completely original... but I guess now's not the time to take risks. :<
I would like the Primals to be more of Traditional Summons (Shiva, Ifrit, Carbuncle, etc) and leave those for story-line purposes maybe have them later on as a big group function attack (separate of the Summoner class/job), then let the Summoner class/job control the 12 Zodiac summons (see: FFXII and Tactic:WotL). I think that would be pretty neat, and I always wishes the Zodiac Summons saw the light a little more, since I love Zalera and Adremmelech(sp?) those most out of any summon~
Actually I made the response on another summon list thread that when they bring Primals back into 2.0..I'd love to see them redo KotR as moogles, seriously. Think of how ridicilous it would be if you had a score of moogles all swarm out of the skies, smack down your opponent, with the King Moogle coming down from above and skewering it with a massive sword. It would be awesome. lol
I don't think it would be hard to balance at all. It would be like Druid for World of Warcraft.
Just an example (and I know that primals are off the list)
Carbuncle/Resto=Healer
Titan/Feral=Tanking
Shiva/Boomkin=Caster
and so on.
Just put a restriction like a 1min Cooldown for casting a summon. Would be like a Swiss army knife. Can do a little of everything but not as good.

something like this!
Just a small pet peeve here but am I the only one a bit annoyed at the thought of Gilgamesh being considered a traditional summon? xD
He's had his appearance as a summon like 3 times (only 1 of those even really counts as a "summon" to me though and even that's a spinoff title) but IMO he's more of a standalone character that would make a better storyline battle or even instanced (I know I'm sick of instances too but would be weird having him running around in the open world.) Then have him drop Genji equipment or something.
Anyways, just had to get that off my chest xD. Carry on.
Primals:
Amalj'aa - Ifrit
Kobolds - Titan
Ixali - Garuda
Sylphs - Siren/Ramuh
???/Lightning Beastmen - Ramuh/Siren
Sahagin - Leviathan
Gigas/Ice Beastmen - Unknown/Shiva
With everything we've been shown so far we could speculate a few possible summons for Summoner:
Carbuncle - Confirmed
Cait Sith - http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/img/co..._20_PUB_20.jpg
Typhoon - http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/img/co..._20_PUB_22.jpg
Deathclaw - http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/img/co...ARR_PUB_19.jpg
Fenrir - http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/img/co..._20_PUB_19.jpg
I think Fenrir is definitely a possibility with the current lore and Dalamud. For those who are unfamiliar, legend holds that the greater and lesser moons are respectively the goddess Menphina and her loyal hound, Dalamud. Since time immemorial, the two have been engaged in an unending dance across the heavens. Ever since Dalamud began taking on a crimson hue, countless theories have been in circulation seeking to explain the anomaly. A great many believe that Menphina's hound is bathed in the blood of a vile fiend who had designs upon his mistress's life,
Fenrir could be Menphina's Hound come to life after 2.0 and all the happenings.
I'd like to see a mixture of expected and less expected espers that produce a variety of effects for combat.
Siren, Seraphim/Starlet and Kirin would have interesting combat implications.
"Summon spells" without actually summoning would be quite interesting also. An example would be Phantom from FF VI making everyone invisible, or Phoenix for party resurrection. This could be done with reference to buffs and debuffs, and could give the summoner unique actions to perform even with a pet out.
I'd also like to see some flat out odd summons. Bismark and Terrato would be incredibly interesting to watch.
I'd prefer to see the older FF2/3 [4/6] espers because they haven't been rendered in 3D before. Most importantly, though, I want summoners to function in a summoning role. I can't tell you how many players hated that summoners were delegated as white mages in FFXI. That's just not the niche it should be filling in the MMO setting. A pet driven system with spells that provide the summoner with its own flavor are important to providing satisfying combat and variety to the game.
pet class enthusiasts are weird, man.

I just can't wait to run around with Carby again ;)
+1 I was soooo happy to see cute Carby in FFXIII trailer.... but we never played with him, waste of cute design :(
say what? there was no pre-VII Cait Sith. On top of which he was supposedly a puppet, not a primal/esper/what-have-you. My point still stands: if a playable, completely bonkers character from another title can be a summon, then anything's up for grabs. i.e., Kefka.

Consider that assides from the Primals, other classic Final Fantasy creatures are not necessarilly considered Eidolons, Summons, Avatars, Espers or anything big or official of the sort. Proof of that is that Atomos is considered here to be just a "monster with a massive maw". It doesn't even seem like anyone has ever seen that before.
If Atomos isn't considered a Primal, then a lot of the things we know as summons in previous FF titles may not qualify as Primals either.
We all agree that the Primals embodying the main elements are:
Fire: Ifrit
Wind: Garuda
Ice: Shiva
Earth: Titan
Lightning: Ramuh
Water: Leviathan.
These were all shown at some point or another, or are already in-game.
Good King Moggle Mog XII is a Primal, stated in-game. however he does not appear to embody any particular element, though I'd be tempted to label him as Umbral.
Odin's exact nature has not yet been revealed, let's not speculate.
From the leaked info about Summoner and Arcanist, it seems that what they summon are refered to as "familiars". The term is usually used for small creatures, so Carbuncle would make sense, and so would Cait Sith. Siren wouldn't.
So where would Siren fit in if she's not a Primal nor a Familiar?
I think there will be lots of classifications for the powerful beings we know and love, some destined to be fought, some destined to aid us, some destined to be summoned, some destined to suck up aether and warp time and space.
Some sort of Holy summon is a must! I never got to be a Summoner on XI, but I just found out that Alexander became summonable a couple of years ago.. please let this happen again. A Moogle summon would also be great, or something like Madeen from IX. As for a Lightning summon, go for Ixion!
I for one demand a moogle summon. Could even make it random what you get when you summon it, could be a weaker version of the 7 moogles from the king fight.
Even though the Thornmarch looks Umbral in nature, Memento Moogle (the King's super attack) is clearly Astral.

So I'd peg him as an Astral-aligned Creature.
I could totally see King Mog XII as a summon though. Several FF games have featured a moogle summon.
