Bad Mentors?
You mean the overwhelming majority of them? That symbol, might as well be a "you probably won't like me" sign.
I prefer to think of it as a quicker means to discover what their ethics are in regards to the game. It's a shame so many people run into less than helpful mentors, but given that the mentor system is automated and not vetted by a living person, that shame should go to the individuals who are failing to live up to the agreement you have to click 'yes' to every time you turn that mentor flag on.
I seriously question how common this "hatred toward mentors" really is. I keep my crown on full-time, and participate in Mentor Roulettes regularly, and have never, not even once, been treated rudely because of my status as a mentor.
While I don't doubt that there might be a few bad eggs out there, the vast majority of folks are perfectly fine with mentors. If you think you don't have the qualifications to be a mentor, that might be a good reason to turn off the crown, but don't let the stupidity of a heckler or two get you down!
Wanna talk about bad Mentors? How about PvP Mentors who just unlocked Shatter yesterday...
I returned in December after a long hiatus, I had no idea what the crown symbol meant.
There should be a mechanism built into the game to report dodgy mentors. The prerequisites built into the game are failing at determining someone's merit - so some change needs to be made.
When I see a crown in DF I expect someone that never says a word and tries to speed run even if it's content where that isn't going to work properly (eg, instances with bees, downsynced classes with inadequate AoE, inexperienced healer, etc).
I'm pleasantly surprised when this is not the case, but it's far too common. Freakin horse farmers.
That's it. If you opt in only for the perks but don't give a scyte about the obligations you AGREED to, you don't deserve mentor status but deserve its permanent removal instead. It will be nice SE giving out stats not only of RMT banned, but also of how many Mentors went permanently dismissed, so people will start to be useful as a mentor, or opt out if they don't want.Quote:
The mentor system provides more experienced players a means to offer advice and guidance to newer players.
In my opinion Mentors shouldn't have to say anything unless you see a sprout in the instance. People who get to lvl 45-50 should have a understanding how to press buttons at least to a basic level, and have the common decency to research the content if the first thing they say "Anything I should know", If your expectation is to be handed a clear with minimal effort then you should honestly consider playing something else. Mentors should really be expected to pull their weight in whatever encounter they get. Teaching people how to do things every time the queue pops should not be the expectation unless the situation is appropriate.
Again these mentor threads should say pve mentor cause it' alot of these mentor threads circling around. Craft mentor doesn't and should Mean be great at pve, nor does the single crown or pvp crown. Direct ur anger towards the right symbol
I don't do mentor roulette but I do help people. I teach specific fights, how to play this class (ones I know), suggest fastest way to gear, yadda yadda yadda. After reading threads like these though I haven't gotten my alt their crown. Seems like a bullseye. >_> I think mentors should have a bit of vetting, but also people should give them more slack. They are supposed (?) to be the best at everything, well they aren't they are players just like you and I.
So... the crown is a status symbol to a bunch of folks that do not (or intend to) mentor others. Thats a fact. I don't give a flying hoot personally because I've been here since ARR release. But I do care about newbies getting a bad idea and leaving. So yeah, changing the icon to a watering can helps to get rid of some of that type while also being more intuitively paired with a sprout.
What's the problem? Am I missing it , because it looks like this is a win/win for a very small effort change.
