Just ask nicely. You'll find not only will a lot of people be fine with you Needing gear, but they may even pass on the gear that you greed on. Most players aren't especially thirsty for GC seals.

To be fair one thing that Blizz did with WoW would help with this issue and that's personal loot, no one can cry you rolled need on an item then as they get their own items and you get yours everyones happy.
The thing that annoyed me greatly was the job i was playing when i returned to game was the one i did the instances with and a higher ilvl job of simular nature would join and roll need/win everything this is where i think Blizz have got it right with personal loot because then there's none of this fustration.
Many MMORPGs do this nowadays. I personally played Champions Online (no one knows this game, alas) which has a mixture of both player-specific drops and the occasional Need/Greed/Pass system in some instances, and Phantasy Star Online 2,which only has personal loot. It's a wonder why FF14 doesn't. Okay, so it does, with some Triple Triad cards, a good chunk of Aquapolis drops and some other stuff that go directly in one's inventory, but...
My feeling on dungeon gear need/greed is no one should ever have a problem if you just greed everything.
and if you feel like needing on gear just because you can, it's pretty much reached epidemic level and you will always have at least one person in every dungeon run doing it so mine as well do it yourself to protect your interests. Dungeon gear is pretty much worthless outside of GC seals and glamour anyways
if your doing zurvan or something that actually can drop relevant items, by all means try to open a dialogue ahead of time. Most people will respect each others needs in groups that requires everyones cooperation
This game throws gear at you pre-60, there is really little excuse not to be at least relatively decently geared for your level unless you potd or fate your way up, but that's what the marketboard and vendors are for. It's not the best gear but it will help you get there.
It wouldn't be that big a deal if I didn't have to devote every single Lore tomestone I got to my anima weapon from now until apparently the end of time (I'm waiting to fill this second bar up on my umbrite step only for a third bar to appear under it). I just miss the days when people weren't the absolute greediest.
I get it, you need seals. I need seals too. I'm working on my goldsmithing desynth too. I just think it's scummy to roll Need on gear you aren't going to wear. I understand I'm in something of a minority at least in this thread, but that won't stop me from thinking that's a scummy thing to do.
Desynth, glam, GC seal, gearing up, there is many reasons to greed/need on ANY item.
One isn't more important than the other.
There is a lot of way to gear up and have seal. Not to have glam a particular thing or desynth (sorta, or cost way to much for basically nothing in return)
I usually greed on everything but if someone tell me in chat "Hey can I have that one? for my job x" I always pass.
My thought would be to add a condition on the roll behind the scene. I.E. something like you can only need if it is an upgrade you can equip otherwise it's pass or greed. They already do it with tank gear that dragoons can technically wear but can only greed on. This way there is no confusion on anyone's part and takes some of the sting out of streaky rng for types of gear that drop, such as runs that drop all monk gear or caster gear.
As someone who burns through GC seals a lot for Dark Matter for equipment repairs, I try to snag as much loot as I can.
If someone speaks up and says they're after a particular set, I'm happy to pass on it, otherwise I need/greed on anything and everything.
I dunno when the etiquette changed tbh, but no it is not considered rude to roll Need on crap gear. People used to be very strict about when you were and were not allowed to roll Need. But that's just the way the community dynamic has changed now. It was an unspoken rule of courtesy, and it was thrown out the window sometime last year. I will mention that if someone specifically asked for an item at the beginning of the dungeon, or if (for example) I was in a low level dungeon with a Sprout caster, and I was rolling Need on gear that the poor newbie BLM could actually use, THAT would be very rude, and I think that at least should be avoided when possible.
just out of curiosity why would you burn GC seals for dark matter? it's easily the most inefficient use of them possible
even grade 6 dark matter is only 120g, buying crafting stuff and selling would net you enough gil to buy 10x or more the amount you'd get buying it with GC seals directly
@OP Your need is just as great as anyone elses even if they need the gear to catch up. Need if you can, greed otherwise.
My entire time playing this game, only once, have I had someone call me out and complain about it... but guess what? It wasn't our idea to make GC seals such an important part of the game. Needing GC seals is a 100% valid reason to roll on loot and most people will agree with you.
Thats a waste of GC seals IMO. Buy it from the junk monger. Just my 2 cents ( but maybe you dont have anything else to spend it on ). I would buy crafting mats in that case, much more profitable plus you'll have tons of gil to buy darkmatter from the Junk Monger. You'll get more bang for your buck that way ( well in this case more bang for your GC seals haha )
If you use the gear to get seals for the relic, then you still use it for upgrading your weapon.
I roll need if i can (exception level up dungeon gear), greed if it is not for my current job and pass if I have it already (or don't want it because of weekly gear lock)
I usually keep it to two things a dungeon run. Sometimes it will go over that because people aren't rolling but I will pass on the last drop no matter what if that happens.
I think farms go much smoother when
1. You are not a loot hog
2. You are not a jerk about winning stuff someone else mentions wanting (i won it lol)
IMO, losing out on a few seals is worth keeping your party happy so the runs go smooth.
I'd never thought to buy crafting mats and sell them as opposed to spending the GC seals on Dark Matter alone, because I'm rolling in gil from other sources and have no use for it at the moment.
Thanks for the tip, though!
Well if I see someone else in the run that could choose "need" I will look if they truly need it and if they do I will roll greed. And if someone is asking before the run or before the rolling to have a certain equipment for glamour than I wont roll on it. But people need to be so fair and also say that they want it. Dont go around and attack people if you did not say a word before the roll.
I also dont see how its rude to need on something for reason like seals or glamour. If that other person wants to gear another job they either have to go into this with this job or they have to ask before the run. You dont really "need" to play another job in this game so why is your "need" more important than somebodies else? Glamour, seals, other jobs, money, all of those are good reasons imo to roll on something.
[Thats a lot of need in those sentences xD]
There is going to be always a reason to why we need something. Just roll need or greed when you see that you have that option. There is always a use for any resource you encounter.
Not reading this whole thread, but ..
My take on "Need" is that the option is there for people for whom the piece represents an IMMEDIATE upgrade. As in, they will equip it as soon as they win it (or as soon as combat permits). Not selling for Seals, not grabbing for an alt job, but an immediate, "I'm going to equip this now because it is better than what I have on" upgrade.
As such, I tend to roll Greed - which I take to be the "it is not an immediate upgrade, but I WANT it for some other reason : alt job, GC Seals, Glamour, Desynthesis, whatever other reason I may want it for.
However, if I see that someone has better gear than what they rolled NEED on, I don't call them out on it, I just start rolling NEED on anything and everything I can that drops in the dungeon from that moment on.
That's my take on the Need, Greed, Pass system. Its a holdover from the old "CAWU" definition on what constitutes a need : Can And Will Use. Use meant Equip when it came to gear, or if it was not gear, Craft With for crafting materials. At the time, there was insufficient overlap between the two (IE - gear that was used in crafting) that the few times where there was overlap were easily enough sorted out, usually by the crafting material wanting person passing until the next drop to the person for whom the gear represented an immediate upgrade.
I think the courteous thing to do is ensure that you are not taking the items from people who would use the item in and of itself when you could find other sources for seals. In any case, your best bet is probably just to communicate your intent with your group, which will give other people a chance to let you know what they're after and as best as possible make sure everyone walks away happy. I have never been a fan of the idea that just because you can need something means you're invariably justified in doing so and I think it generally leads to a more frustrating experience for many people.
I roll for what I need. I need gear to turn into points for chocobo respecs. There is no easy to to get that many seals.
and even then you're not obligated. Use your own discretion.
Wait, do you mean the peppers that cost 48000 gc seals yet only cost 20 allied seals? lol...you should definitely not be buying those with company seals. You're welcome.
If you're needing specific alt job gear say so. Most players if they don't need it themselves will accomodate.
Example: Just today ran an expert with the tank who requested that if the MNK chest dropped he would like to have it. SCH, BRD, and BLM in the group had no objections and while MNK gear (fist, feet) dropped from each chest he greeded them.
MNK Chest dropped on final boss and he got it.
Wow really everyone?!? If you came on a job that can need, do it. It is NOT your responsibility to gear out other people's alts. If they want it so bad, they can go on the job they need it for.
But wait a minute....
If you are wanting me to pass gear so you can take it to wear because you want to use your tomes and lore on your relic instead of gear why are you calling me greedy and scummy? You are making a choice to build a relic, which by all definitions is an optional item since there is shire and alex weapons too both of which do not require lore or gc seals, and you are choosing to put seals and tomes toward it but my wanting seals for w/e reason is scummy and yours is good?
I don't get your logic there. I think you need to sit back and take a look at that again.
