I think the same goes for a lot of English speaking players. I'd love to be able to communicate with the Japanese players in Japanese. Sadly, my Japanese is very limited. Especially when it comes to writing.

That's a big no. There were, of course, problems with language and racism in 11, but with 8 years under my belt in that game I can definitely say that the positive experiences bar far outweighed the negative experiences. IIRC, part of SE's original choice for multi-lingual servers was to bring people from around the together in a positive way and I think as a whole it was smashing success. It is one of the things that SE got right from the start, and one of the few things they did right in 14.
I admit, I was uneasy with it at first in 11, but I found that a little politeness and formality went a far distance, and even a little attempt at trying to understand other cultures (Japanese in particular) went above and beyond in smoothing over any problems.
While, "Please forgive me, I do not speak Japanese" was a great phrase to learn, I found that a different one helped me even more, "Will you please teach me?" My formative years as a WHM were under the direction of a Japanese player who took it upon themselves to teach me that phrase, and took me to my first XP party in the dunes.
This discussion doesn't even make sense. The servers are already international, and turning them into separate ones would cause an enormous amount of problems.
This without mentioning that the truly internetional nature of this game is one of it's most enjoyable aspects. Anything different doesn't even make sense in today's globalized internet. There's absolutely no reason to prevent players from different regions to play with their friends.
Going back to an absolutely antiquated standard of slapping people in their own national ghetto is ridiculous.
It's a tough call for me. I played FFXI for years so I'm use to seeing multiple languages in chat. I'm use to trying to communicate with the auto translator. At the same time I've played other MMOs like WoW, Aion, Rift, where everyone pretty much speaks English and it's nice to know when I talk to someone they'll understand me.
A simple solution would be to name servers certain languages but not have restrictions where someone goes. This way people who would rather be with like speaking people they could be while others who don't mind or speak more then one language has options.
And last, if servers was to be split up it's not completely bad. It would be a huge change but if servers was split up then merged so there was a decent population on a server of people speaking the same language you would notice a huge difference. Regardless if you don't mind playing with a wide variety of people speaking other languages, most likely everyone sticks with people who speak your language. Given a server that is mostly the same language it will feel more populated.
Yeah our server there really isent any backlash with anything. I do remember one time someone was /shouting "if i see a jp tell im going to spam this..." and it was hatefull . So i shouted back yeah your an idiot this game is japanese , the main base is japanese , and the operating office is in japan. then basicaly told that person how much of an idiot thay were. Shortly after that the person stoped , hopefully quit.
But if i wanna get my gear fixed i allways auto-transulate something like this " lancer main hand repair please help me out /item brass nugett <pos> thank you^^ and i usualy get someone to fix it. That or ill shout in english some one fix my crap gear and take my gil please : ) lol im sure you may have seen that lol
As for the OP i agree keep the servers how thay are. And let the japanese players know we get just as meny rmt /tells as thay do and we agree it is annoying
Also wanted to add with the recesnt earthquake i think the Japanese players might now understand that we hold them as equals. And we care about them just as we do our own. (american . english , german , ext.)
And because at times we might not understand eachother at least we can all support eachother. Like the post in the Japanese fourms showing our support for the people there.
Also in FFXI when i was in a japanese party i wouldent speak because i dident understand. But i spoke the one language we all understand FINAL FANTASY!
Also to add i remember a time when Abyssea came out also. I had to fight geeze i dont remember his name but he was a metal knight big metal guy. Anyways it droped a Blue Mage item i wanted Mavi Tathlum . Well this JP party clamed it and i was a sad panda. So i said excuse me.. blue mage item can i have it? It was a drop from the guy. No one awnsered me nor did i expect them to so i was like ohh well. Then i got an invite from that LS to there party where in the loot list was the blue mage item and in auto trans. the leader said Darkreign lot bluemage O.K!
I was like GTFO! i was so happy and thanked everyone of them.
Ironclad executioner was the NM i remember now.
People just need to be respectfull and enjoy everyones company no matter where your from : )
That's not very different than separating servers forcefully. As of course 99% people will go to servers with their same language not to be left with a very small number of people they can communicate with.
This would completely defeat the (widely advertised) international nature of the game.
Simply no. The game is international, it's been pubblicized as such, people already chosen their servers, and it will remain like it is.
9 years of whines didn't change the opinion of SE about this matter (thankfully), they sure won't change it now, esoecially since the communities have been getting along much better lately, from both sides.
I can't tell if you are being serious or sarcastic. Stupid text and lack of emotion. Regardless, I do happen to think it is unthinkable - at least before you offer to help. Some of my best friendships in 11 started because I sucked, and asked for help, or someone else sucked and I offered advice. Granted, in pick up groups, I am a lot more lenient. With my friends who claim to be hardcore I'll kick then from a party and tell them they can't get back in unless they bring me a coke (I frequently play with people who live next door to me). But obviously that's a different situation as I know them intimately and its all in good fun.
I think servers should stay the way they are.
For some fun humor though, remember this! ^_^

I was serious.
I have only partied with Japanese players and have never seen anyone openly get kicked from a party for any reason.
We sometimes invite strangers to join us (including non-Japanese speakers) and there was only one time when someone was really being a jerk. Rather than kick the person, we said that we were finished, disbanded the party, and went elsewhere to continue playing. No hurt feelings.
That music made me dance...... but yea, I DO NOT miss those days at all. but like I said before, it is because of the general idea that over seas players are not compatible with Japanese culture, plus the RMT's... and crazy taru taru running around town screaming JP Only, and naming themselves JPOnry......... I can now add to the reasons ><
and dude wasn't suspended for jp only it was for spamming.
I'm also against it.
I'm currently learning Japanese, and I have been learning English since I was four, so this really helps me in some ways:
1) Improving my language skills.
2) Improving my vocabulary.
3) It let's me practice some "real" talks, and so on.
Let's add a little detail. There's an equivalent thread on the Japanese boards. even there the majority is for keeping the servers as they are.
The times have changed, and the few, vocal supporters of separate servers have lost even their support in Japan.
I'm from Argentina and i learned a lot of english playing FFXI so I want to keep going this way. Knowing that my english ain't the best but before my experience on Vanadiel it was impossible for me write this text.
And... hell no, 90% of spanish players just sucks, i don't want to be on a server with them only. I'm fine having some spanish users and the rest of ppl from others countries.
I am glad so many are against it.
I am not opposed to a couple servers being that way and completely optional. I personally found playing with EU players in XI was generally more fun than my with fellow NA's. I also enjoyed JP parties, auto translate wasn't really an issue for me. My supporting opinion for the availability of language/region specific servers is that there are people who don't want to play internationally. They should be able to remove themselves from the rest of the community without creating a hostile environment for those who enjoy playing with other communities. In the end I believe it will create a stronger community.
I'm against it, its fun to play with people of other cultures and style. Also pick up few words :D from different language.
* anyone know how to reduce the size of the signature? *
I think your gigantic signature goes along well with your manliness. . . .
I don't have any issues with different language servers.
A little off topic, remember in ffxi, you could tell who the nubs were in whitegate/jeuno by the overuse of the translator. It used to drive me nuts how most english speaking nublets overused it, or misused obvious incorrect translations of words like <May> <Bee>
example: <Teleport-Mea> <Can I have it> <Please> <Reward> <You can have this> <Thank you>
as if you need so many translations to get your point across.
my personal non-favorite:
The gentlemen who found it groundbreakingly entertaining (to themselves) and felt a need to shout and share it with us in whitegate/jeuno being clever by creating sexually suggestive sentences out of the translator, <mithra> <Joy> <Hole> etc... It was real entertaining for the first 6 years and 364 days I played, but it got a little sour on that 7th year mark.
Sometimes sarcasm doesn't translate well on forums, I'll correct myself. It got old after about 2 weeks. =\
<I'm sorry> to unintentionally derail! <Please forgive me> ;p
I am not for segregated servers. If anything, the way the servers were handled in FFXI and in FFXIV has allowed us, as the community from various countries to come together during a crisis. It has allowed me to care deeply for people, regardless if they were in the U.S. or another country. Otherwise, I think if we were on our own servers the reaction and support that has thus been shared would have been nearly non-existent.
I enjoy working with other people from other countries. I want to show others that not everyone is an arsehat in the U.S. =)
This is the stupidiest idea ever!!!!
Wtf am i suppose to do with the minority of possible 30 or less Nordic players on 1 server ?
lol... ya there's not many of us playing FFXIV, most Nordic players play WoW,
mostly because it has huge relations to our own history & mythology.
nuuuu thx, i rather have more or less various countries playing on a server.
Besides i like having japanese ppl around, i cant tell if they're generally nice or as bad us europeans.
...either way i keep telling myself that the Japanese = the shitz! (imo)
Cuz they always been nice to me, i bow & they repay with same kindness.
I would stop play when they seperate Servers because I would loose the posibility to play with my Linkshell.
Cross-nation servers (or whatever they are called) offer many benefits and I don't want to see restricted EU, JP or NA only servers introduced.
Players are on at all times of the day- when I get home in the evening and logon, even if JP and EU people are going to bed then NA players are coming online (I'm GMT). If I was on an EU only server and wanted to party late at the weekend then it would be harder to find people online to do that with.
Economy- people from around the world buy at different times of the day; i.e. if I go to bed with a bazaar up then there is a chance that a JP player might buy something from it. If I was on an EU only server then most people would be in bed the same time as me and the likelyhood of me selling bazaar items would reduce.
Ok, so maybe not the best examples but I'm sure many of you know what I mean.
Besides, I like talking to people around the world and I have had good times doing events in Linkshells with people in Japan, America, Germany, Holland as well as the UK both in FFXI and FFXIV. I don't see the need to change it :)
Personally I think Auto translate needs to be reworked, in today's day in age there is not a reason that the text cannot be instantly translated to any language and displayed on the client in your native language, so that the culture differences are removed from the game and a player is just a player. Some of the regional slang will not come across as totally correct but that is easily overlooked.
I'm pretty much opposed to any and all things that have the potential to promote xenophobia(it pisses me off when people say "gringo" here, and I'm Puertorican ffs), so naturally I'm against region-separated servers.
Think of it as an opportunity to learn stuff, meet people, and become multi-lingual, which is a plus in any situation, especially the job market.
I do enjoy watching the multilanguages going through my general chat even if i dont understand a word of what they are saying. i enjoy playing with the Japanese players because they often are good players despite the communication barrier. Maybe I should learn some basic Japanese terminology. Yes, I agree that the auto-translator needs to have more terms put in.
I do not blame the Japanese for their opinions on the RMTs because I am in total agreement. In XI, the RMT tells were often in broken English. It got annoying real quick when XI had free trials. I hope XIV doesnt have that fate for a while..
So, please dont create specific language servers because that will limit the population. I would like to continue to play with friendly japanese players and English players, may they be friendly or horrid.
That being said, you have to be windowed to use google or other translation programs. Some people would like to play full screen (possibly due to having multi-GPU setup). It would be nice if they implemented something to the game to work with translation websites or software.
No thanks.
Translating Japanese into English by computer is not as easy as you think. There are very few Japanese words that you can take and say "This means This in English. " You need a human to adjust the language differences.
I'm not saying it can't be done someday, but it's not available just yet. Google seems to be the best at it so far, but even it is not perfect.
Edit: If you want to see what I mean, try pasting what I just said into the translator, translate it to Japanese, then back to English.
