I feel like Yoshida listen more the eastern community than the western community. So this thread is a rest of time to be honest with you.
Yeap and other things. The main reason I say this is because they get alot more community devs leaving comments and replying back to their threads than what we do. Damn the community never leave a comment in a threads and if they do its like a very rare occasion.
I wouldn't want samurai a tank.
Cousin said leave it as a DPS like FFXI that they already ruined dark knight with being a tank and taking the scythe away.
SAM in FFXI had the makings of a tank but terrible mechanics that didn't allow it to actually do so.
Before the shift into Store TP and 5-hit builds, SAM had access to a good number of armor PLD and WAR could wear, on top of having the highest parry rating out of all jobs. What prevented it from tanking is that parry rating alone can't be used as a mitigation model (like how ARR launch WAR was all drains and that didn't work at all), defense scaling was terrible combined with what people were hunting and fighting (mobs that severely outleveled them because 200 exp/kill). Hasso/Seigan was a sort of compromise, but that didn't really push SAM into anything other than more damage because of how beneficial Hasso is for damage (as opposed to Seigan, which entirely relied on Third Eye being active).
What job would equal in demand of samurai that could be a tank?
I lol'ed. The Community is always arguing SAM Tank vs SAM DPS, if people paid attention to this subject before commenting they should know how the community is very divided on this particular subject, its pretty unfair to just say "the community wants it to be a DPS". Go figure there are more DPS players... I'm very Pro SAM Tank but ever since my first argument on this subject I've been very open to the possibility of SAM being either Tank or DPS. I wish Pro SAM DPS people have the same mindset but I see a lot of them being very close minded.
Edit: I just really look forward to how SAM is made! Be it Tank or DPS, like a previous player mentioned I really hope they go for a set of Daisho , and maybe have a unique mechanic like manipulating their ancestors aether to perform spirit arts!
Right! One of the most iconic sword users in FF. Its also RED Mage, maybe a bit of a moot point but I cant imagine seeing Red Mage in a party with a BLUE or GREEN icon... I highly believe it will be a DPS using a Sword/Rapier and weaving spells making it a true Hybrid and fitting the slot of the 4th melee DPS and also int based.. Because its a Mage of sorts, cant see it not using int imo
This
and this.
I want Samurai to be a dps.
What you're not taking into account is that DPS generally dont use healing spells at all. However, healers do use DPS skills. It would make the most sense if Red Mage became a healer. That way it can use both black and white magic.
I face palmed.. then giggled.
OT
No thanks. Would like to actually see a Two-handed sword wielding DPS class. To people claiming higher que times and using NIN as their example. I have mained NIN since it's release and have little memory of these extreme wait times you speak of.
As to what else can be a tank. DRK in FF has never been a tank to memory, therefor other things could be a tank with a little imagination and reworking. RDM could juggle between spells enhancing Mag/Phy damage resists. DNC (Dancer) could be an avoidance type tank that avoids attacks through it's fluid like dancing. Geomancer can be reworked to cut damage through earth spells. Etc etc.
Stormblood doesn't need a new tank, or a new healer. 1:1:1 is false balance and it's unsustainable.
In addition, we don't need Samurai to be the fourth Slashing Damage Tank, the third Two-Handed Weapon tank, and the third Sword Tank.
Dodge Tanking is inherently terrible design, don't even start.
1) As long as it's not that dumb "armored shogun" stereotype, I don't really care what role it is (probably DPS).
2) Who said we're getting three jobs? Because a) there's been no official statement saying that there would be three jobs, b) the "we're lacking tanks" argument is easily countered by the "there are enough tank players" argument, c) if I was a game developer wanting to test new combat mechanic systems (like what we're getting in Stormblood), it would make more sense to me to use non-critical roles (i.e. melee and ranged DPS) for new jobs to test those waters and THEN make new jobs for critical roles (tanks and healers) once the results of testing those combat mechanics systems came in and have been suitably balanced out, and d)

I'm not seeing three silhouettes there. Maybe it could be just a placeholder, or maybe devs are placing quality over quantity, who knows....
The silhouettes are a male Midlander Hyur and female Highlander Hyur, from these renders.

Whatever role it takes, everyone is going to make their Samurai modeled after some stupid anime that has created this new standard of being completely over the top and unoriginal. Just watch lol, there will be so many glamours with Lord's/Lady's Yukata sporting the bare legs and Katana.
Make it fair, make SAM a healer! All problems solved an no one is happy \o/
I understand (not really in fact but I respect it ^^") why people want SAM as a tank but....we really need a sword DPS imo ^^"
There are no healing sword classes, make Samurai a healer. Instead of casting magick the Samurai cuts the players back to good health.
i dont get this obsesion about SAM dps only for -whe dont have a "long sword dps"- SAM or RDM both use sword and one at least go to be dps so i dont get why so much obsesion for something is just pure aesthetic and dont give nothing to the role.
and yeah whe NEED another tank in stromblood, have 3 jobs for 2 spots are hard to balance more when 2 are very tie to MT and the other is pretty happy in OT spot, have 2 MT and 2 OT make more easy see if one job is pretty strong or if lack in something, if we get more and more dps jobs whe need more tanks and healers to grow proportionally, and wth tanks and healers we deserve new jobs to play too.
anyway if samurai come in stormblood is no matter now, the devs already choose the role and sure is under development now,
Mnk is excluded form raiding huh hmm I'm a mnk main and I'm doing just fine thanks for thinking of us though
no job is excluded for raiding, all can do it, other think is the "is not optimal" way of think many have here, anyway RDM is melee, at least was a melee job in the other games, i dont think they are planing to have 5 melees jobs for 2 spots (idk what to think if they add it like a ranged), plus with the skills rework i hope they make monk more desirable in they expansion for raiding.
I'll say it again that SE won't be wrong with either role they decide to assign Samurai, though I'd be smiling mischievously upon seeing Yoshi announcing the job as a tank.
aesthetics are the only reason i play WHM over AST. aesthetics are one of the main reasons i play DRK and started tanking... and aesthetics are also the only reason i will never play monk...
for me aesthetics are really important, even more than the actual gameplay. of course gameplay is also important, but if i don't like to watch my class, when i don't like the weapon, the animations, the overall style of a class, i will have no fun playing this class.
but however. that also means i don't care if the SAM is a DD, or tank. when i like the style of SAM i will play it anyway ^^
thats my point, if ppl whant so badly have a long sword dps why i dont see it asking in every threat for RDM dps, i guess ppl asume RDM go to be dps yes or yes but when ppl ask or say "i want RDM tank" they dont get so salty about it, what i want to say yeah SAM is cool and ppl want it to they side even if they only argument is "whe dont have a sword dps, or tanks have already a 2 hands sword job" when you have RDM saying "hi im here, i can be a cool sword dps too, j-just love me :(" but no, is "SAM dps or riot"
YOu can make any argument you want. But there is two of them who simly not.
- "We don't need more tanks/more sword wielding tanks". Why not? It is like said "we don't need more DPS". Plus, peopel is asking for RED MAGE as tank. They uses swords too.
- "We want RED MAGE as tank": It makes 0 sense. It is even less logic than Samurai tank. Every new tank class must be "compatible" with the old fending gear. SAM looks better with this than RED MAGE.
You can repeat this all you want, but won't be true, no mmater who much insist.
Now, there are 2 kinds of samurai. The heavy armorer historical samurai who where cruel and sadistic warlords and follow a strict code, or the wanabe anime light armor/cloth samurai who uses katana with 1 hand and break everything with a Sakura flower flowing in the air.
Ssss. be honest. People want a katana class for DPS, don't care about SAMURAI. I am honest. I love tanking and I like katanas. I won't lie to myself. I want katana wielding tank class. They can call him whatever they want, Shogun, Samurai or "Guy with the katana".
And, you know, Samurai are know by the use of the Yumi (bow), not the katana.
By the way. His role is setted already. Yoshi and his team probalby aldeady decide how wil lbe.
if i am correctly Red Mage uses a rapier, not a "real" sword. so, nope, i would never love Red Mage if i wanted a SWORDfighter. red mage is... well, a mage with a rapier.
tanks already have a one handed sword (paladin) and a two handed sword (dark knight). why not give DDs a one handed "sword" with red mage and a two handed sword with samurai? also do we really need a fourth slashing weapon on the tank side? i would like to see the next tank uses a hammer o.o/
depend of the game, red mage apears in many ff games using many types of weapons, in most of the they use a sword or a cimatar and other like ff tactics use a rapier, thats depend of how you look it and what type of sword SE want to add to RDM.
for my point of view if SE add SAM as tank i think is pretty fair add RDM with a sword instead of a rapier.
slashing, blunt or pearcing damage means nothing in the game excep how you interact with the other jobs, add a blunt damage tank means tie it to a monk for damage except they make it have they own blunt resistance down with cant stack or directly make it stack but is the same, that make that tank need to go with monk alwais to get that extra damage.
pls not another sword tankQuote:
@Naoki Yoshida-> Make Samurai a Tank class!
No, it's not, at all. It's like if there were currently 3 DPS total, 2 of which had swords, 1 of which had a different weapon and instead of adding another job that uses a different weapon that isn't a sword... you added another sword wielder. That's really boring. If I wanted to wield a sword as a tank I already have 2 options, I have 0 options for any other weapon as a tank except axe. Even a sword wielding DPS would be okay, because at least it's a sword wielder that goes into another role that isn't tank. I also don't like RDM as a tank unless they gave it a different weapon, especially since we already have DRK which currently fills the mix between magic and physical.Quote:
- "We don't need more tanks/more sword wielding tanks". Why not? It is like said "we don't need more DPS". Plus, peopel is asking for RED MAGE as tank. They uses swords too.
Red Mages uses all kind of short and long sword. Rapier is just one of the weapons they use. Red mage uses similar weapons to paladin, except heavy shields and heavy swords. Don't think only on the damn FFXI, think on all FF. In some FF they even use canes and shields.
people still want more slashing jobs? this game needs more Blunt classes currently monk is the only class who uses blunt but then you have dragoon with piercing and you have 2 ranged classes who use piercing which makes dragoon a very strong class since it buffs the dps of the other 2 ranged classes and still having strong dmg party buffs while monk brings pretty much nothing other than a mantra and int reduction when you can still have a DRK giving you that so what SE needs to do is either rework the slashing/blunt/piercing mechanics and make each class buffs its own damage only/working only on melees or add more blunt classes and adding more slashing jobs will just buff warriors more when they are already strong
I love when people try to bring this up as if it's any kind of reasonable argument against SAM's being tanks. I mean, for starters, this didn't stop SE from putting SAM in FFXI
http://i.imgur.com/oNxuV1z.jpg
I mean, I don't see you making a complaint thread because monks and ninjas wear such iconic and thematically fitting gear like this in FFXIV:
http://i.imgur.com/FHvXZB7.png
http://i.imgur.com/ONMPRfA.png
Then the hilarity that you go on to say they'd be perfect in DRG gear is just the wonderful icing on the cake of your ridiculous argument. Cause DRG gear is so much better.
http://i.imgur.com/22X228f.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/FEtz0cC.jpg
That's not even touching the fact that the vast majority of DRG gear, especially Heavensward gear, shares it's appearance with Fending sets. So if tank gear is too "cringey" for SAM to wear, then so is DRG gear.
No, tank.
You already have Dark Knight. It doesn't matter what color the punching bag is. You're there to take damages.
And there it is, now you're moving goalposts here. A rapier is a "real" sword just as much as any other form of sword. People clamor for a "Sword dps" but in reality they don't want a sword dps, they want SAM specifically and it's disingenuous for them to say they want a sword DPS. Once you point out that things like most Ninja weapons classify as swords, or that Red Mage is very likely going to be the next DPS job and they use swords, then the excuses start flowing just like this.
The "armored shogun" archetype is exactly the archetype of samurai throughout virtually every Final Fantasy game. The instances where there's samurai-like characters that are not this archetype are decidedly NOT referred to as Samurai. To implement a Final Fantasy Samurai and not have it wear it's iconic armor/helmet would be a disservice to Final Fantasy fans.
It was hinted during the 14 hour broadcast that there would be 3 jobs added in Stormblood (Relating the number of jobs being added to the Summer event which featured 3 rangers/sentai. As for the silhouettes, Yoshida answered this in an interview with Famitsu after the NA fanfest this year that the silhouettes are not representative of the number of jobs being added in Stormblood.
