Is it a ToS violation to /sh spoiler of other video games?

Don't like it, blacklist. It's what it's there for.

If someone is doing it in the DF, then... blame SE for not letting you blacklist in there.

JUST /blacklist them if the spoil you, a simple command to fix ALL of this that doesn't require Bans of any kind.

Objectively, spoiling a game is not against ToS. In the context of trolling sure it is, but most things are when pursued with malice/ill intent toward other members of the community.

Yes and no. Trolling can be as simple as playing a harmless trick on someone, like these awesome vendors. What people come to associate most, but not all, trolling to is little more than bullying.

What you're talking about is taking things out of context in a sterile environment. Generally, unless you're new in a linkshell, free company or around people you don't really know, spoiling something accidentally is harmless because it was done out of ignorance of others' opinions and stances. However, if you're in a situation where you know people don't want spoilers, then you're being pretty malicious. Slip ups can happen, but that's also on you for not taking extra care.

That being said, reporting something like this as harassment rarely has anything come out of it simply because unless you're telling that person to stop doing what they are doing as it bothers you, a GM has no way of telling if it is harassment, other than by your word. A player's word isn't good enough. That's not opinion; you need proof. If you ask someone to stop and they keep persisting on, say, spoiling something for you, you now have grounds for harassment and proof for an investigation to be made against the offending player.

Why is there even a freaking fight? People defending assholes that spoil shit must do it themselves.

If someone in Idyllshire straight up shouts, "SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE!" blacklist isn't going to do you much good. The damage is already done - the troll has accomplished their goal. And, in this instance, it's pretty clear that trolling WAS the intent. It's not unreasonable to ask a GM to punish them for what was clearly an attempt to harass other players.

Yes, the context is important. I don't think that folks here are arguing that anyone who slips up and accidentally spoils stuff while chatting in /shout should get the banstick. A simply return shout, "Please, no spoilers!" won't fix the damage that's been done, but will hopefully make the offender more self-aware.

In the Dumbledore example, though, just a spoiler out of nowhere, it's pretty clear that the speaker is trying to provoke a reaction and ruin some folks' day. It's fair to ask that that be disciplined.

I learned my lesson. I found Persona 5 spoilers on a freaking recipe for a cake on the internet!
I wasn't even really angry I just laughed because of all the places to find spoilers...

Like really, how a spoil is considered as a "harrasment" or even ruin ANYTHING.
I got spoil for tons of thing but that doens't mean I didn't enjoy the thing after that.
btw even if I "defend" the spoiler guy be sure I never spoil since I understand that some people are mad for no reason ... heh

There is a big difference between discussing the ending of a game "omg did you get to X fight in World of final fantasy (or any game that came out recently)?" "yeah, then when ____ happened, that was so cool", and reading off all of the spoiler moments to upset people (even then, context such as which game is very important, I feel that XV spoilers may be grounds for banning as the game has not been released yet, but an older game, or even a non plot-centric game such as pokemon, not so much).

You just spoiled Harry Potter in the former context, so you are fine, you didn't go around the internet on day one of the books release yelling the statement.

Edit: I see nowhere that the OP makes it clear that the trolling was intentional, the OP comes across as extreme and vague so it is difficult to work out any kind of motivated attack.

Spoiling isn't against the ToS. People just hate it.

You could spoil the opening cutscene here and people would get mad.

I was helping someone with a question they had about a quest in early thanalan (like level 8 stuff), they were pretty vague about it so i asked what the context of the quest was. Someone immediately jumped in and hushed our conversation because "we were about to spoil the entire plot". I guess helping people out isn't aloud now because of dangerous spoilers.

You can always use /tell to help someone ;)

I personally do not care about spoilers but I understand those who do.

You know, one thing that drives me up a wall with that is... people who haven't experienced it yet aren't inclined to know what to expect, and they won't typically think about it. When someone says something like that, all I can think of is you're implying something is going to happen soon or a designated point. Even if you don't specifically say a spoiler, by getting hush-hush about it YOU JUST PUT THE IDEA IN THEIR HEAD! So suddenly when it was a casual situation, they're now going to think about what's going to happen and the surprise of the impact is lost.

OP got spoiled on XV. I got spoiled too, know how it feels. Nothing you can really do about it though, just kind of have to hope that the story is amazing enough that it doesn't matter.

Was it a YouTube video comment section that you were looking at? I could be looking up a video on how to tie a knot and probably get Rogue One spoiled for me there.

You can't censor someone for using the freedom of speech, now if they were shout profanities with the spoilers then yes you can report them. But trying to report someone for ruining a story for you is kind of dumb, if you don't want spoilers then turn off shouts and avoid every site on the internet.

Oh, I was very self-aware - I used this particular example PRECISELY because it was used in exactly that way. When that volume of Harry Potter was released, the Internet practically erupted with trolls eager to get a giggle by spoiling that particular plot point.

Which is also why I felt it was safe to use. If you so much as touch the Internet, you've probably seen "Snape kills Dumbledore" floating around. It's practically a meme by this point, and definitely falls under the It Was His Sled trope (opps, spoilers for Citizen Kane, watchout!) - spoilers that are so steeped into pop culture that they no longer even qualify as spoilers. (And, to be fair, the whole thing about Snape killing Dumbledore isn't NEARLY as interesting as WHY Snape killed Dumbledore, so it's actually still not that much of a spoiler.)

I by no means am supporting or decrying the OP. I'm simply pointing out that, yes, spoiling CAN be a form of player harassment. Was this the case for the OP's situation? I have no idea.

something is spoiling stuffs thats old but things that even havent been released yet? ye would call that trolling and would think most would report it. its a reason why i turned off shouts and says for now to i get the game on my own hands.

Not really. Even if you spoil the current content in this game, it's not a offence. I remember back at the end of ARR, there was someone named Nanamo Ul'dead running around Balmung. Some people reported them, but when the GM answered, they said that the name isn't an issue and that they actually found it funny.

If the game is relatively recent then it's just a dick move. Not against and ToS that I know of. The day 3.4 launched i remember I was told there was someone spoiling the MSQ in shout chat in Illyshire. I had JUST teleported away before he/she started. I got lucky but others did not.

Had someone go in a story discussion in shout and what did some of those people do? Scream at him spoilers and complain nonstop at him instead of blacklisting him. He and many went on with the discussion. GMs have consistently said if the person is not attacking/personally harassing you and you dont like what they are talking about, just blacklist them from any futher contact.

You aren't gonna avoid spoilers on the internet, thats how it is but wanting to ban someone that just HAPPEN to step on your brand new timbs is just alttle outrageous.

Wouldn't that be "censoring someone for using the freedom of speech" as well?

Having to turn off your shouts can also be at least a mild inconvenience, e.g. if somebody is using the /shout channel for something useful like saying where Hunts spawned.

A thread on another gaming forum a long time ago mentioned a character's death in the thread title. We argued for a little while over whether that was a spoiler. I (and most of the people there, as I recall) were of the opinion that it couldn't count as a spoiler because he died in the opening cutscene before the game begins. Since that's the same cutscene in which you first find out he exists, there's no point at which you'd know of him and expect him to be alive while reading the forum.

Apparently the forum mods didn't agree with that reasoning, since the whole thread was deleted shortly after. (That forum's rules don't allow spoilers without advance warning of them.)

Of course you can. There is no freedom of speech in the game. (Nor any other online game I've ever heard of. Nor in the forums. ...)

Whether SE would choose to do anything about it is up to them. They seem to be pretty lax most of the time, but they don't need to be.

It was on a generic cooking website I googled for a carrot cake and I was scrolling through the comments to see what people thought and boom, P5 spoilers.
I've had to be careful on YouTube too when it comes to upcoming games.
