How does SE plan to restore White Mage's identity as a healer?

Luckily, I doubt we'll be subject to that. AST was kicked out of raids because it was actually bad at both healing and support.
At the very least, WHM remains a decent healer. You'll probably get looked at weird for not bringing AST in fast farm parties but that's it.

i doubt it too, but you never know what people will think after 5-6 month of doing nothing but farm easy raids while overgearing it by far ^^

Anyway, let's refocus here, the point is to actualy speak of what can be done to put AST/SCH and WHM on the same spot. We all agree all 3 healers can play, we all agree WHM isnt bad, but that AST and SCh are better, so lets just focus on what can be done to improve the situation.

Well I still stand by I don\\'t want WHM to just be thrown utility just because AST has it.
I still think that taking advantage of their high dps would be a nice option. Otherwise give them back their original stoneskin for now. If WHM wants to truly focus on regen, expand on that.

This may be OP, but I was thinking of an ability on a long CD that turns the remaining potency of the regens you placed on the tank into a barrier.
For instance if Regen was going to heal the tank for a total of 10k, using this ability would give the tank a 10k barrier. You would have to choose if you want the regen effect or the shield effect. This effect would have a chance to proc from a crit heal on your regen.

If not a barrier, turn the remaining potency of the regen into a direct heal. Kind of like how Thundercloud on BLM works

your second sentence directly contradicts your first. you do realise that?

WHM is a reactive healer by very definition of the word Reactive. it is a job that reacts to the damage the party takes and heals accordingly. thus it is a reactive job.

SCH is a proactive job. because the idea is to shield the party before the damage happens and thus mitigate it.

if A boss is going to whack the tank for 15k. the whm typically waits for the hit to land and then heals it up after wards. (Reactive)

A scholar should shield the tank before that 15k hit lands and thus mitigate as much of it as possible thus the tank only takes 6 or 7k damage instead of 15k. (proactive)

the problem many scholars seem to have is they play it reactively like whm. they wait for that 15k to hit the tank and then try to heal it all. and this is why they struggle and say scholars lack powerful healing power. if they had shieleded the tank then theyd only have 6-7k to heal and not 15.

WHM identity is fine. if there's a problem it would be with asts identity as seems a fairly common opinion from various reading its a carbon copy of a whm with a couple of gimmicks.

Do you endgame raid? Utility is preferred vastly over raw heals or raw dps.
Why do you think Monk is undesirable?
If WHM stays like this while AST continues getting both heals and support utility, WHM isn't going to last. And WHM will never have truly superior heals, because that would make them mandatory, so their stuck with only heals, but never too strong.

@Dzian: What I meant by that is, WHMs identity is not a reactive healer, because all healers need to be reactive with the sole exception of mitigation.

Or are you going to convince me that AST isn't a reactive healer while in Diurnal stance?

What you want could be an option, if we had a lot more HP and if damage hitted way harder.
At the moment, you can already top a tank with 2 spells (lets say a crit cure II with divine seal is enough) as whm.

If WHM's identity want to stay the 'healer with most potent heals', we will need tank with twice the HP they have now, and mechanics that deals so much damage that mitigation cant remove more than half of it with every CD possible. But if you go with this optic in mind, AST and SCH wont have enough healing power to withstand it, resulting in either sch or ast being left out again, and whm becoming mandatory, and the cycle continue.

The raids at the moment doesnt need high healing. (and dont even talk about the dungeons, for the last two i find myself 95% of the time doing dps since there is so little damage incoming)

Also OP wasn't saying that WHM is a bad healer, it's just not as desirable now because AST got buffed one patch too many, and the utility and near-identical healing they provide is simply better. For 4.0 I reckon it would be nice to get a few conjurer-like spells for WHM. I like the idea of a 'flood' as an AoE water attack, and maybe some earth based attacks that actually cause healing as an AoE effect. I don't really think they can take WHM much further than that, given that it's such an iconic job and has to fit a certain image.

Either give it some sort of advantage or just make raids so healer intensive that you need a WHM.

I think WHM identity is being THE healer which mean powerful heals for every situation. AST had been buffed so much they lost control over it but it's clear that wasn't their original plan.
So I think the revamp of the battle system and with the new skill will give them the chance to highlight it again.

WHM: big multiple heals + HoTs, burts damage for when no heal is needed

SCH: shields, healing pet and MP to allow persistent DPS

AST: buffer with versatilite healing set

New healer: a debuffer with emergency heal and strong DPS(?)

I expect that the more jobs they add the more it'll be easier for them to focus on the identities of each healer. The same goes for tanks.

More than reinstating WHM's identity as a healer, I think they need to pull back on AST creeping up on WHM's deal with Diurnal Sect. Of course, I don't think that's happening this expansion, but maybe the system changes in 4.0 will be big enough that AST will have a better identity surrounding the cards and how their space/time manipulation affects their healing output than just having copy-paste spells from WHM. The obvious and immediate "solution" would be to up WHM's healing potencies up a notch or two, but we all know that doesn't really do that much and only causes overhealing.

It would be great if AST's more powerful healing worked in a gated manner instead of just having Helios and Benefic II, much like Scholar's healing bursts are entirely dependent on Aetherflow and Emergency Tactics, but of course with different mechanics that made sense with the lore. I think they could have made a much more interesting toolkit based around the space-time themes but simply copy pasted from the other jobs and called it a day :/

I really think Monk PLD and White Mage are all in a poor state together.
They're all jobs that are supposedly supposed to excel in their job, but have competition that match their mitigation/damage/healing and brings more to the table.

Really SE needs to get off this idea that these jobs need to remain simple for the sake of remaining simple. It's obviously hurting what the jobs can do.

I'm sure this has been said already in the thread but my perception on the AST vs WHM identity crisis is that there are two primary causes of this:

At a healing level: WHM and AST have very similar standing throughput, although AST brings both consistent (disable) random mitigation (effectively 30 seconds of occasionally allowing the tank to drop stance in situations where they otherwise cannot) and stronger throughput while moving.

At a raid dps level: A WHM playing at an extremely advanced level might be able to compete with an unlucky or mediocre ast in terms of overall raid dps, but an ast at the top of their game/luck is going to blow them out of the water. ASTs have good and sustainable DoT damage on top of their ability to buff the raid. An AST at equivalent skill level to a WHM is almost certainly going to bring more to the table provided they are fulfilling the same group role.

WHM already brings a lot of sick AoE damage to the table, so I'd personally be interested to see WHM maintain its position as the "power" healer through damage adjustments, able to flex a lot more dps muscle while also putting out strong sustained healing at the cost of more strenuous mana management and precise movement requirements. The WHM play style as a raid "main" healer already reflects this, the payoff for executing at a high level though is not equivalent to an AST. The dps they generate is not sufficient to compare to ast and the playstyle is more mentally demanding.

tl;dr: much like a ninja vs a monk, you are trading raid dps buffs for a high personal dps class. Different groups then can decide what works best for their play method, much like many groups do now with monks and ninjas/dragoons

edit: it also certainly helps that WHMs cooldowns are suited for dps. PoM is unarguably more powerful as a dps cooldown than a healing throughput increase. Benediction is best used in a coordinated and consistent manner to gain dps. Tetra is excellent for use when bene is on cooldown: drop out of c-stance for a gcd and do a regen-tetra-maybe-asylum combo then resume c-stance. Asylum is a free and gcd efficient aoe regen and is insanely useful to avoid having to cast many aoe heals or tank heals, depending on the fight. Assize is an obscene dps cooldown, enough said.

It'd hardly much of a deal, and considering world first A12S was AST/SCH, having the opportunity for card buff outweighs the half-of-an-accessory MND bonus.

Although I do wish they would change it to as long as there no same healer roles in the party, it should default to MND/PIE. As AST/SCH is a normal composition.

This is not true. Before 3.0 came out AST had more powerful abilities but they nerfed it just before the release and we had a very low-potency/weak buffer healer.
I don't think the solution would be nerfing AST again, also because at the moment WHM can gain a spot in every party and nobody will ever say "NO WHM" like ppl said "NO AST" in 3.1.
The only thing I would adjust of White Mage is a bit Mana-efficency.

Funny you say that, just yesterday I ran into two PFs that said they want fast farm runs, high dps etc. They had WHM locked out and wanted either one AST or one AST/SCH.

the theory is like that, yeah. but the problem is: high heal leads to high overheal. high dps is always welcomend. you can't "over-dps" (instead of some specific fights maybe like ifrit ex - wich are already outgeared).

the healers should be equal in healing power. if you make raids so healer intensive that you need a WHM, then you have created a new imbalance for SCH/AST. the same can be said if you increase the healing power of WHM even further - then WHM will just solo heal.

the healers should be equal in healing power and should all bring some utility to the party. a healer wich only lives from "high heals" will either heal too much and destroy all other healers - or he heals not enough for his lack of utility and gets destroyed from the other healers.

the only reason why WHM does survive is that people just don't stop playing WHM. after all it is the most played job in the whole game. people like playing WHM and the WHM is one of the most iconic Final Fantasy classes.

I'd like to see WHM get a Balance Life spell to equalize party HP since no other job has it yet.

Generally I feel that WHM healing is overkill for most content. Frankly I enjoy WHM more for AoE burst damage and stun than I do for its healing and buffs these days. Unfortunately all that AoE support power is of situational use when it comes to anything other than trash pulls.

Maybe WHM could benefit from more multi-function abilities like Assize that can be used in different ways depending on the situation. Even Holy has a supportive function with that massive stun; it's just useless for CC against bosses and is quickly subject to diminishing returns otherwise.

I switched around my melds a bit... My DET is meh... But my CRIT and Spell Speed are over 1k each. That seems to help...

This really hits the nail on the head. You can't just outright make WHM the strongest healer because it would screw over any other healer from AST and on because they would HAVE to have weaker healing in order for WHM to retain it's identity.

Obviously SE saw this didn't work and went ahead and bumped AST heals up to WHM levels. This however, only served to skewer what made WHM unique.
They should just move away from this "pure healer" nonsense and give WHM raid utility like every other healer.

The formula we are currently following with healers.

There are two types of healers, region and shield.

WHM: Region.
SCH: Shield.
AST: Shield or Region.

DPs: SCH > AST >= WHM
Support/Utility: AST > SCH > WHM
Heal potency: WHM > AST > SCH

Any combo of healers work as long as you have 1 region and 1 shield.

WHM/SCH
WHM/AST(Nocturnal)
AST(Diurnal)/SCH
AST(Diurnal)/AST(Nocturnal)

SCH: DPs.
AST: Cards.
WHM: Big heals.

If you are suffering with heals then bring WHM + any shield healer and you should be fine.

WHM is still incomparable when it comes to healing. You said they are losing their identity?
I disagree with that. They are still the stand alone pure healer.

When WHM solo heal it is not surprising, but when SCH or AST does that then it is something.

Your error is, that you value the skills based on their usefulness in random, chaotic pug groups.

You're right, it's not an Oh-shit button. It's an OP heal you can use when your WAR is holmganging something or you let your MT fall to 10-15% (well, you know.. you can plan something like this), while still being in cleric stance.

It's not 6 per minute. In a 9:30 minute fight you have at max. 45 AF stacks and that only if you use Dissipation on CD up to 4 times.

First minute: 3 stacks prep + AF off CD + Dissipation
Second minute: AF off CD
Third minute: AF off CD
Fourth minute: AF off CD + Dissipation
Fifth minute: AF off CD
Sixth minute: AF off CD
Seventh minute: AF off CD + Dissipation
Eight minute: AF off CD
Nineth minute: AF off CD
Tenth minute: AF off CD + Dissipation

So the absolut maximum ist around 4-5 AF per minute with 9 stacks at the beginning, where you never need that much healing anyway. Also you maybe should lower your (now) "extra" ~3150 healing pot/minute by 1250 fairy healing potency you lose per minute.

(4 times Dissipation equals 4*10*300 = 12000 potency fairy casts)

Or did you mean solely as a Oh-shit-button? Like "I saved my AF stacks for emergency and have six stacks available for that"?

Who cares if bene is overhealing 1k or 2k or 3k? You use it at the lowest point your comfortable with.
It's more comfortable to just use bene, waste 0,2s and an ability with no other use for it, than to switch out of CS, blast a huge chunck of your dps out for healing, while with one crit or used with the tank 1-3k HP to high, you have way more potentially overheal than with Bene.

i never said it was "6 per minute", but that it was "up to 6 per minute", which isnt the same.

For benediction, its pretty rare to get only 1-2-3k hp on the tank unless its a benediction you had prepared as your strategy (with holmgang or the drk thing i cant remember the name), and most of the time, just switching out or cs and using one and a half gcd can do the work to full life the tank (boosted regen+tetra in offgcd + cure or cure II then back to cs).

Most of the time you will use bene (when you didnt expect to use it there) on a 7-10k hp tank, depending on your other healer that will mostly react the same way (with either lustrate or ED), making either a full instant overheal on his part, or a 10-20k overheal on your part. Don't take it wrong, i'm not saying benediction is bad, i'm just saying that people should stop taking it for an instant to react to something that wasnt suppoesd to happen. It's a CD that you are supposed to know when to put, not one you put when a bad situation suddenly happens (cause in this situation, half of the time, it will go badly).

i dont get the 'reduce your healing cause you lose your fairy' either. The potency i talked about was only from lustrate, and i didnt count any other heal. Losing the fairy wont influence the output heal of the lustrate.
And if you want to go that way, the dissipation also buff the scolar heals by 20%, so you lose your fairy, but your heals (not spells) are boosted too.

AST heals are too comparable to WHM while offering massive raid buffs and that's causing the imbalance. That's why a "pure healer" like WHM will stay behind in the competition. They can't simply make healers weaker to make WHM seem stronger. They need to function as a healer before anything, and AST at 3.0 healing potency failed in that. All healer will have to AT LEAST heal on the level of a WHMs basic toolkit and regens to be truly considered.

You're forgetting oGCD healing. Assize, tetra, bene, asylum, these are all great tools that put white mage way ahead of AST's one oGCD healing skill.

I'll agree with Asylum and get being decent, bit Benediction and Assize could see some change.
With assize, it's really just an instant cast medica with a very small MP restore attached to it. It's good yes, but it's hardly defining. Of you could be affected by divine seal? That would be pretty good.

As for benediction, it simply needs a CD adjustment. Again not bad, bit really not defining.

Benediction is nice, but 1,000 potency goes pretty far, especially if it crits. Essential dignity pairs so well with an ASTs weave openings.

Combust/Aero -> CS off -> Essential Dignity -> Aspected Benefic
Aspected Benefic -> Essential Dignity

It has ungodly syngergy with Aspected Benefic. It does place an upfront heal, but has a very powerful shield/regen behind it, so Essential Dignity still sees the HP as low. therefore heals more ON TOP OF the shielding/regen! Pretty nifty stuff.

What I'm fixated on for WHM is more specialized use of Cleric Stance and the ability to really coddle your party. WHM should be the rock that can carry a party through progression, even after mistakes are made. Its when they shine.

Odds and Ends-
Quicker Stoneskin trait changed to "One with Earth" - Casting Stone, Stone II, Stone III or Stoneskin has a 15% chance to reduce the cast time to instant and the MP cost to 0 for the next Stoneskin cast. Duration: 20 Seconds.

Restore? They are a perfectly viable healer as it is.

WHM has a well defined niche, it's just that pure potency isn't a viable niche. Actual pure healing throughput is generally not necessary. Blowing a cure 3 on a stacked group feels great, but 99% of the time it's better to throw a medica 2 out.

I like the non weakness thing with Asylum but not the 5% reduction... Let's avoid to become mitigators :P

I personally don't think an extremely small mitigation effect will make us mitigators. SCH has 3 very strong burst heals and it's still completely known as the shield healer.

That being said, all WHm really needs as far as mitigation goes is there old stoneskin back really. Or a better trait because quick stoneskin is the worst trait in the game by far.

I don't think that you can design a support job that is better at performing its primary function than its peers. Just as every tank should be able to mitigate every encounter, every healer should be able to heal every encounter. If this weren't the case, certain jobs would be excluded from serious content. The difference is in what additional benefits the jobs bring to the table, when you're not busy mitigating or healing.

I think the reason why WHM's dps enters into this discussion is because AST's auxiliary function is to provide raid dps buffs, and raid dps boosts on jobs within the same role are typically balanced against personal dps. I don't think boosting WHM's destructive potential is a stretch; many of WHM's existing offensive spells are already capable of doing solid damage, if given the opportunity to do so.

Also, bear in mind too that historically, during the War of the Magi, the elemental-based white magic of Amdapor was pitted against the void-based black magic of Mhach, culminating in an elementally driven flood that wrecked Mhach/Yafaem, and nearly all of civilisation along with it. When you belong to an order of mages which has historically stood up to BLM's destructive magic and held its own, I think it's fair to say that WHM's own destructive potential is nothing to sneeze at. It just needs to be brought out in the gameplay a bit more clearly.

62 - Reflex: reduces incoming magic damage on the target by 10% for 10s. Also reflects the magic damages with a maximum potency of 300 for every hit.
64 - Vanish: reduces incoming physical damage of ONE enemy's attack of 50% on the target. The other attacks are reduced by 10% for 10s. Also reflects the physical damages with a maximum potency of 300 for every hit.
66 - Personification of White: restores 10% of Mana and 10% TP, aoe effect.
68 - Blessed Resurrection: Resurrects the target with no weakness state and with 50% of HP.
70 - Megaene: Grants the effects of Megaene for 10s. Under the effect of Megaene the MP cost of the next healing magic is nullified and healing output increased of 50% for first ability, then the other skills ares increased of 10% potency.

Maybe OP. But we wouldn't have any more problems with MANA and it would be more focused on healing.
