DPS - Dump People/Person Statistically.

Works quite well with healers and tanks too. Healer focuses too much on nuking and the tank dies? The healer was trying to be a DPS.

DD sounds so stupid, I'd rather be called a DPS. Who cares what it actually stands for.

Does it really matter? Most games say DPS these days and there weren't enough games that used DD back in the day to make a trend.

Coming from ffxi, I still say DD and people say to me "why do you call it DD instead of DPS?"

I simply say "well think about it for a second, I'm a damage dealer, or, I'm a damage per second..."

Then they scoff at me and go quiet.

DD was direct damage, to differentiate from DoT based classes.

Yeah, tanks aren't called Mitigation Per Second because in endgame they basically function as DPS DDs with a few more defensive CDs.

Welcome to tanking in FFXIV, where everything's made up and your tankiness doesn't matter.

Regarding the original intent, I usually default to "DPS" because that's what I learned it as from WoW. If someone asks to be called a DD instead of a DPS, though, I'll oblige.

I believe the choice of DpS over DD occurred because DD covers two types of classes. MMO design used to have sustained damage classes and nova/burst/alpha strike damage classes.

Sustained damage classes originally did medium levels of damage but could sustain that damage over long periods of time. DpS was the standard method to see how effective the these classes were and so they began to be referred to as DpS classes.
Nova/Burst/Alpha Strike classes relied on doing high damage bursts (often with fairly long cooldowns) at the start of fights to end them quickly.

When longer and longer fights started to be the boss design Meta, DpS classes became more desirable for content than Nova classes and designers were often forced to redesign Nova classes into DpS classes or give them DpS modes.

DD makes more sense, but when I started playing mmos everyone used DPS, so that's what I've gotten used to and what I'm going to stick with. :P

I personally hate the use of the word TANK for the role of Crowd Control, people somehow belive tanks are things that are enduring and resistant to attacks, but that is not really the case, aside some minor forms of protection, tanks are usually just more agile firing platforms, capable of bringing +80mm firepower to an operative zone at higher speeds than infantry and cheaper than airplane ordinance, all to secure said zones, what is the deal with tanks is not their armor, that is secondary and the evolution from the heavy WWII tanks to the more nimble MBTs of our age and day shows how armor has became a secondary part of the tank, where gun, targeting system, stabilizers and speed/agility and autonomy all are more important.

Calling something that takes hits a tank is contradictory, and irl tanks, it would make you a terrible commander, the last thing you want is your tanks getting fired at, because they are VERY vurnerable, ATGMs, enemy airstrikes, artillery... A tank in a bad position surrounded won`t make a "glorious last stand" it will get one shoted in mere seconds by RPG fire. A lone tank in an open field is asking to get ammo racked by ATGMs or a fast striker aircraft.

On the other hand, where you don`t want to stand, is in any kind of position being fired at by a tank, with those nasty high explosive ammo it deals with fortified positions, squash ammo makes other armored targets tremble in fear, when they get hit by them the armor splinters in the inside and sprays all over the interior of the vehicule, it might not explode, but you will have to take the crew of the vehicule out of it with a vacumm cleaner. Is a fast thing, nimble, bringing at least a 120mm dealer of destruction along with some nice fire support 20, 22 or even 30mm machine guns, autocannons, not to mention additional toy like rockets and missiles.

The tank is a mobile fire platform, not something to hide behind, the tank best describes the damage dealer role, in any modern military is that what it does, bring in punishment.

I move that we change DPS back to DD, as we referred to them in older MMOs like FFXI.

And in exchange, we shall no longer refer to the likes of WHM, SCH, and AST as a "healer", they shall now be dubbed "HP/S" or "HPS" (Heals per second)!

And Tanks shall no longer be "tanks", but "DS" for Damage Sponge!

Not only me, but all the modern military manuals and conflicts, i could probably fill up this entire forums on videos of tanks getting one shoted by ATGMs but it would probably be against some rules of the forums and i rather not risk it, no one wants to see tank crews being cooked alive by their own exploding ammunition.

The only DD in this game is Dzaemel Darkhold. if were gonna give roles dungeon names, i want tanks to be AV and healers to be HM

For me I've always used both. Even in the older schools games. EVE eq XI

I've always known it as 2 separate identities of Damage Dealer jobs.

Being an FF game i'll use XI as its predecessor. in my experience DD jobs were generally things like Samurai, Ranger , Black Mage. generically the jobs that hit hard but not necessarily fast.

Where DPS was often used to describe jobs like monks, thieves, ninjas, dual wielding warriors. Generally jobs that don't hit particularly hard but do hit fast

So with the GCD styled combat in XIV where thaere aren't any "hard hitting" jobs the dps term kinda fits.

In FFXI we always used DD. DPS always sounded like some WoW term.

That is not true, even if firearms were not good enough against tanks, the regular hand granade could work against them just fine. Not to mention since their apparison, their role changed fundamentally between WWI and WWII, the tank was never really something "hard", and when they actually were good armored enough to be invulnerable to their pairs or anti-tank measures, if they ever were, was at the expense of everything else, mobility, firepower, crew comfort/survivality. WWII proved that slow moving heavier tanks made to endure the enemy fire were not good enough and they actually never really granted the survivality of the crews, the whole "heavy tank" and "super heavy tanks" for that matter were ditched years after, with the victor tanks where the T-34 and the Sherman/Firefly, it was proven than the tank was meant to be fast, and hard hitting. What guarantees the survival of a tank crew is not armor, is a fast target adquisition, firing power and speed to deploy/retreat. Thus the modern MBT was born.

Tanks, for all intents and purposes, are more alike what we call DPS/DD classes than what we call tanks.

BTW, 100 year anniversary of the tank.

Honestly, I don't care how long it's been around. Damage Per Second doesn't make sense as a role descripter. Never did, doesn't now, won't for the next 7+ years. I really don't understand how DPS even managed to replace DD to begin with.

It was very weird to see that when i started playing, one of my first reactions was "what, there is a DPS class? then the other classes DO NOT DO DAMAGE?!".

DPS = Something everyone does.
DD = Role focused on the activity of DPSing.

And switch tank to crowd control already.

It's language from multiple sources. Chances are if you played FFXI you are "DD" because people there used that term.

If you are a former WoW player.. or played basically anything that isn't FFXI, you are DPS.

Never played WoW, played a metric f**k ton of MMORPGs. XIV is the first place where i see DDs being refered purely as "DPS".

I think the title DPS is very fitting. But in the context of the type of player.

I just did Weeping City 2 days ago, and the douche bag team I was in didn't socialize, didn't do mechanics, the only thing they did is compare their dick size in a parser. Zombie adds keep wiping raids, Void Fire blowing people up. Monk tries to be "meta", fell off in Ozma triangle mode twice. Bard refuses to sing song for me even though I was empty on MP rezing these assholes over and over.

Then I did Weeping City again yesterday on my alt, this dragoon on the team is typing in /a of how team C should just kill themself because they are dead weight, and the entire raid can't do damage worth of shit. Then once we get to Ozma first he falls off, then he plants the add on the right side and kill half the team.

If the role of a tank is to hold aggro, stay alive, and do mechanics, a role of healer is to keep people alive, do damage if possible, and do mechanics. And the role of DD is to do damage, support, and do mechanics. Then the role of DPS is just simply attempt to kill something before it kills them, then post their parser result in chat, or tell other people how inferior they are. They only care about damage per second.

To quote the great Chris Rock, there's black people, then there's N****s. And in this case, there's DD, then there's DPS.

Dps makes more sense than DD in a game like this where everyone can deal damage.
