No thanks. Open World PvP on WoW is dead because people just want do their battlegrounds in peace, so whats to stop pvpers from just doing their frontlines and whatnot while standing in the cities?
There's just no point to open world PvP other than to Harass players.
From a story standpoint, it makes absolutely no sense and is utterly ridiculous. If you want that kind of PvP there are plenty of OTHER games.
So i plant a very loud NO to your Open World PvP.
The game has these useless things called sanctuaries. No one ever uses them because mob AI in this game is a joke. From a story standpoint it makes total sense. They would just be labeled bandits. All four regions have those. <_< What's sad, is I wouldn't even play on this server and even I'm not going to scream no as loud as I can and deny the fact that the world is boring beyond reason after you've been around once.

This type of PvP isn't for you then. The people who usually play on these servers are looking to be a nuisance to other players, or to put themselves to some crazy challenge. I understand your points, and I am not saying they are wrong, but this isn't a regulated pvp match in the open world.

Why not just make the housing areas open world pvp. Dont wanna fight lock your door :P Loads of hiding places and zone is also a decent size lol
If you simply must have open world, why not just add the Cartenau Flats as an option to travel to? It sits above Northern Thanalan, but below Coerthan areas (side note: where exactly is Seal Rock or the Fields of Glory?). If people want an open battleground, let em have it with that. Adjust/add fates and hunts as more of a PvPvE thing, maybe some Garlean attack teams if need be. Enforce a minimum level/item level if need be, no DoH/DoL, no nodes, warning/confirmation upon selection to travel to it.
Or how about even reviving the Diadem that way? A special "Sky Pirate Free-for-All" mode (but no LITTLEFOOT).
I don't have citation, but if memory serves right, Yoshi P didn't want to make it be something that was imposed on the entire player base. he wanted players to agree to the terms of the environment through a dialog box. I guess if they went that way then you couldn't report players for ganking you since you agreed to the terms.

That's it exactly. B&S clearly explains to you that by joining a faction or equipping said faction's gear, you are opting in on the game's open world PvP. . . When I don't want to be bothered, I don't wear it. But neither does many others I see at lower levels. For obvious reasons.
And that effectively supports my earlier statements. I'm not against having it. But if it will go unused or prove itself unpopular (you know, like PvP already is, unfortunately), we'd be better served improvig what we've got or coming up with other new things

I accept this idea, but only if no one users the word gank, ganked, or ganker. -shudders-
Now come on, we may be a vocal minority of the playerbase, but one can't say what we want or enjoy is any more or less important than say, the raiders, or minion collectors, or people who ONLY enjoy one given aspect of the game, even if we may be divided amongst ourselves about what's good for the game overall.
To say otherwise or for a dev to act on that principle is how you kill a game.

Final Fantasy games are, almost without exception, single player games where you play as 'the good guys' so to speak trying to save their world from the forces that would seek to destroy or subjugate it. There is no "you can either be on this side or this side and fight against the opposing side", even the previous FF MMO, FFXI, has never had open world PvP (there it was limited to a regimented wargame called Ballista and a capture the flag game called Brenner).
We're all on the same side here - Grand Companies are little more than a semi-united volunteer force divided only by the banner of the nation that administers them. Fundamentally we are all Warriors of Light defending Eorzea and Hydaelyn from all who would threaten them. Beating each other up for funz does not fit into that ideal at all. Leave that for stupid sellswords and mercenaries in their cups. We are above that nonsense.
It wouldn't fit in the game story/setting wise, and espesically not gameplay wise.
I like my PVP. Rank 49. but open world PVP wouldn't work in this game. Not even challenging someone would work well in this game.
Lets look at the world pvp server on WoW, its called Emerald Dream and is by far the most toxic place I have ever seen, even more so that LoL. People sending real life death threats, entire guilds camping one person. Honestly I could do without that, but that said, some sort of duel system in this game, with the ability to choose 1v1, 2v2, and so forth, (Yes I know there is the feast but this would be outside that and great for rpers.) God that would be amazing.

An open world PVP server only works with multiple factions. The factions of Eorzea are not at war like those of Azeroth, it would break their alliance to have everyone fighting.
A fourth faction for Ishgard would be a nice touch however. I hope there will be some thought of an open world battleground similar to Wintergrasp in WoW(http://wowwiki.wikia.com/wiki/Wintergrasp).
I think a lot of people play FFXIV (like ffxi) with the intent and idea of adventuring with their friends and working together to achieve goals. Theres other games to play with PVP. Just like someone previously said, "noobs should know what they would be getting themselves into when joining an open pvp server." and you should know what you're getting into when subscribing to FFXIV. The idea of an open pvp server for ffxiv just sounds odd and out of place.
I voted yes just cause I freaking want the world to be dangerous again like it once was.
While I'm a big advocate for open world PvP, I agree that it really doesn't work with FFXIV at all. The only way I see this working is if it's implemented in a way similar to the guild wars within Tera. Essentially two FC's of similar sizes would be able to go at each other's throats in the open world. Players would essentially gain points for doing FATEs in Azys La and hunting down players of the opposing factions, with players of higher ranks within their Free Company rewarding more points than others. The FC with the most points gets special housing or airship items.
Even then though, it would probably never turn out how people want, and would probably be more of a war of attrition than anything else.

FFXIV's overworld was never really dangerous, I've died only a handful of times, and most of them were to Odin.
Imagine hunts on an open PvP server.
The only thing this would achieve is making getting anywhere a complete pain in the ass, in a much more prominent way than in WoW due to the smaller zones.
I voted yes but imho it should just be the frontline maps:
- accessibile only by ferries in certain maps
- require lvl 60 to enter
- no quest or monsters
- with safe zones and atherytes
- make people earn small amounts of wolf marks upon defeating other players
This way if someone is bored has something to do "to kill some time" and for those who don't like the idea of pvp in general can just pretend it doesn't exist because they'll have no business there =)
It shouldn't be a PvP server, just apply it to all servers.
Maybe exclude the original three zones of Eorzea to protect the new players.
