Your funny, embarassing, mistakes and weaknesses as a new player

My very first character was a Marauder and at one point early on I removed Bloodbath and Foresight from my hotbars as I thought they didn't seem very useful (I don't know why I thought this). I was also oblivious for the longest time to the concept of cross-class skills.

When I got the unicorn mount, the end of quest text said something about "Rainbow Barding not included" so I asked everyone, and posted on the forums how to get this rainbow barding, only to find it was Squeenix trolling.

I used to wear a cowl as a pugilist because I thought it looked cooler than the rest of low level gear. >_>

It took me a bit to see the loot window while running dungeons, I thought that the first person reaching the chest would get it. So I would speed every time to be first.

I thought you can't turn while casting :D

I thought the limit break was just your limit break (i.e. everyone in the group had their own.)

I kept using it over and over in the first few dungeons... as a healer.

There was also my first run on Titan NM. I was really excited to do it after hearing stories about how awful Titan was, and the minute the barrier went down, I went charging in...

...only to be knocked off the platform ten seconds later by a landslide. The ACN in the group healed the party through the rest of the fight while I spent ten minutes hugging the floor.

I got three comms. Their pity still stings.

This is my first MMO, so I had no clue about the tank/healer/DPS trinity, or even what a tank was. Aggro? Never even heard of it.

My first few dungeons, I was frantically trying to grab mobs because I felt bad that the one guy in front was always the only one getting attacked. I would run ahead and aggro the next mob while everyone else was busy killing the current one because I thought it would help him out.

I finally had a very patient and kind (and frustrated, I'm sure) tank explain it to me. Wow, did I feel stupid.

T9 is where I first learned there were color indicators on the enmity bars and what they meant .-.

I didn't know about turn and strafe or legacy movement until after I beat Aurum Vale.

You can imagine the rage of our healers because I often played with my little brother and he also didn't know. I would just try walking backwards extremely slowly and never escape it unless I read it early.

I finally learned about it from a nice Drg who told me about legacy movement in Copperbell mines hard when he noticed I'd run from the boss early and wait for the AOE before going back in.

i started the game as a healer. this is my first mmo and i was so nervous to let someone die - especially the tank - that i never trageted any other player of fear i could not traget the tank again fast enough. if anyone other than the tank got damage i healed him with medica.
and it took me a few weeks to realize that medica heals the people around myself and not around my target...

back in the days of ST i had only used SMN, and decided to unlock my "free" sch class since i had spare tomes etc for gear.

naturally only doing the job quests for skills and never having played the class leveling, i thought SCH's only healing skills where its job specific ones because they were green, and forgot Physick existed for ages

que me healing my first run of ST using adlo constantly for every hit and wondering why my MP was draining so fast...

I did it before when PLD was my only class & I still sometimes do it now all the while wondering "wtf is going on? why is arrgo so hard?" then I totally facepalm... & activate Shield Oath (it not being there caused way more problems than the Tank Forums says with good DPS)

I didn't know the duty finder existed... I kinda skipped over all the tutorials and only knew there was a party finder, but being in my free trial I couldn't use it so I just stood in front of sastasha waiting for someone who needed to do it too to come over and invite me or something...
When I told my friend the next day he explained the whole thing to me. Though he wasn't exactly helpful avoiding these situations as he thought everything in this game was the most natural thing in the world...

Back when the game first launched I was a little clueless how main and secondary stats worked so when I got to lvl 30ish on my drg I was finally able to afford crafted accessories and bought dex gear on the right side thinking it would improve critical chance/potency, boy was I happy when I figured that out.

I jumped right into ACN and loved it and I had 0 idea about hate/tanking so I had no idea why tanks were so frustrated when I used Topaz Carbuncle.

Also in preparation for becoming a SCH I thought I would really help a lot by co-healing (still as an ACN, mind you) with my piddly little Physicks. >_> I am sure all of the WHM and co-DPS who experienced my newbie ACN-self were also very thankful for that... >_>

I also remember seeing one of my THM friends showing off Swiftcast and thinking "Pffffft I'm a healer, I'll never need that." By the time Titan HM came to be a thing, I realized... I really needed Swiftcast. XD

i started playing as pld
when i unlocked The Wanderer's Palace and qued to it people there were yelling at me to speed run it and i had no idea what a speed run is
so i opened youtube to see what is this and all i saw plds hitting sprit and doing flash and Shield Lob while running and i thought yeah thats easy i can do it
so tried again with my amazing il55 gear and did what the videos i saw doing and ending up losing all the mobs aggrro while running and couldnt bear a few hits and i died and the others got 1 shoted by the tonberry
ofc i was yelled at again and they called me stuff xD the next day i qued and did a normal run and didnt get a group telling me to speed run it

I remember when I first started playing, my two friends that I was gonna play with both went gladiator not realizing that it was strictly a tank class, they though it had a dps/tank split kinda like arcanist does. I decided to go healer, and liked the idea of arcanist because summons. However one of them took a break from the game around the time I started, and by that time I decided, whatever, I'll just go summoner instead.

Back when I was a noob, I always forgot that I was either healing with Cleric Stance or DPSing without it... Very annoying.

When I first started healing dungeons on WHM, I thought DPSing was ridiculously stupid.

I first started playing maybe a week or so after 2.0 release. I could have sworn the tooltip on the stat point said dex increased accuracy and critical hit chance, so I split my bonus points between strenth, vitality, and dexterity. It stayed like that until I was level 25 or so, just before I unlocked Dragoon.

On my first class, I forgot to do the story quest from level 5-30. Since these quests only reward gear (my FC provided me with gear when I was newcomer) and I did not realy miss any skills. At level 30 I wanted to unlock my first Job, so when I returned to the Arcanist Guildmaster, I was suprised with a Lvl 5 Quest. :P

It took me some time to figur out that Hunting logs and guildhest bonus resets for each new class. I thought it was a one time only, but while leveling my 3rd class to 50, a friend asked if I wanted to do some guildhest toghter. I joined them and saw a whole list of guildhests with first bonuses, I changed into another class and saw it again, that is when I figured it out. :P

I still do that sometimes. :)

I had about 2 years under my belt before I unlocked the challenge log. I thought it was a feature to be added in the future and that the grayed out section in the menu was a placeholder for it.

Back in 2.0 when farming WP and AK was the norm, I thought Bloodbath gave me hp for every tick of Circle of Scorns. Thinking back, it's kinda cute.

Since I was an XI player prior to playing XIV, I didn't think the power of your cures or attack spells were affected by your MD since cures and magic damage in XI were never based off a weapon's damage rating.

I've come from years of playing WoW and dabbling in a few other F2P MMOs, but I had my share of newbish mistakes when starting FFXIV ARR. Oh man is this list longer than I'd like... Hopefully some of these make people chuckle.

- started off as a GLA, thinking that, though it said they're tank, I'd be able to choose to go as dps, like classes in WoW, much to my dismay when I got to the first dungeon (though I started off fairly early into the launch of ARR, and people were very helpful in DF after I said it was my first time in the dungeon, so a thank you to all the helpful players!)

- I didn't notice where the enemy monster health bar was on the default HUD right away, so, yeah, I died to one of the turtles outside Ul'dah thinking they were level 1-3 like the other little monsters...

- before I knew you couldn't die from falling (unless in combat), or that there wasn't even swimming, I was in Western Thanalan, and jumped down into the river, thinking it would be deep enough to keep me from getting fall damage, and freaked myself out when I lost 3 /4 of my health

- I didn't know the default reply shortcut was alt+r, so kept wondering why I would auto-run when wanting to reply and ended up clicking names instead

- I thought I could only choose one crafting class, and so spent more time than I'd like wondering which to learn

- I thought buying a lot of mats and quick synthesis was a good way of levelling crafting, lol, then I learned how important raising quality was

- thankfully didn't take too long to figure out that you don't compete against other players for gathering nodes, but I thought that was the case at first

- for the longest of times, I also didn't know that the main city crystal was part of the city aethernet network...

- when first levelling GLA, I often wore the MSQ gear intended for LNC/DRG from about 25-40 because the armour value on the two separate pieces was higher than that of the tanking pieces that were chest+head, and leg+feet slots. My apologies to the healers in those few dungeons I did...

- when I got to Stone Vigil the first time, I had just learned how to mark monsters, only... I'd right-click, mark, then close that tab, click the next mob, right-click, mark, close, and so on, all the way through... I am so sorry to that group for how long it took. We actually ran out of time, I still feel silly about it...

- I didn't know how important cross-class skills were, so didn't have many for PLD for the longest of times (thankfully learned when I levelled my second class)

- I didn't know how to leave a party for a bit. I was expecting to right-click my name and there would be an option to “leave party” there

- levelled LNC/DRG second, didn't know what “use LB” meant when I did my first dungeon on it

- when I was first levelling CNJ, I briefly thought casting Medica would heal anyone near me (in FATEs at least, didn't expect it for rest of open-world, but still...oops)

- when I did my first hunt, I thought it would be like WoW where simply hitting it would get you the rewards, so when people asked to hold killing Naul, I just auto-attacked thinking it wouldn't affect what I got, and would allow a few more people to get there and get their hits in

- I didn't know that you could dye a glamoured piece of gear, so if I was using the same glamour item for a few different looks, but wanted different colours, I would dye it, then glamour it (figured this out this only recently! lol)

I'm sure there were some more, but those are the ones that stand out when I try to remember. Oh man, good times.

When I came back and started HW, I would run into BLM Ley Lines circles thinking it would help me. (I am a WHM). Luckily by 55 I happened to read a guide that mentioned that they only benefit the caster :)

By the time I got my AF, my friend asked me why I was running around town to the quests spots. I knew you can teleport town to town. I didnt know you can teleport within the town lol

Waaaaay back in 2.0, I used to think the Heavy Thrust buff only affected attacks from the flank...I was not happy to have to use Impulse Drive from the rear to combo until I learned it was a straight dps buff...

Also thought that the little aggro bars under you icon were a meter of how well you were doing, not enmity. Always would try to be the top, even though I was a Drg (though, in retrospect, enmity does correspond to dps for Drg as long as you don't use Elusive Jump, so it wasn't that bad a mistake...except when I had aggro)

I used to think that "dragoon, Paladin, etc" was reserved for 1.0 players, and that those of us that joined in 2.0 would be relegated as "Lancer, Gladiator, etc", and that they were the exact same, just showed who played earlier and stuff <_< >_>

I had terrible macros for whm and arrow macros to change targets. It made my healing terrible. To be fair im on ps4 and it can be hard to put powers where it feels comfortable and efficient.

I will pre-fire a summoner debuff before i near any mobs

Just now in syrcus tower i was being the absolute perfect scholar, microing my fairy, swapping fairies for WD/FW while keeping maximum uptime on all my dots. I was pretty proud of myself because I'm awful at casters normally.

Turns out cleric stance never activated and I didn't actually do anything useful at all.

Oh, I am brand new myself, and yesterday or the day before I realized that "The Heart of the Party" isn't just a really prolific FC. :p

Oh, I started out as archer, went bard, and eventually decided to level lancer/dragoon for b4b (I had a few fairly helpful peeps in the fc who helped me lots because they saw potential in me).

So, I got dragoon to 50 back then for the hell of it and for the achievement and everything (and because I liked it). At the time we had a LOT of bards so whenever we did fc stuff we'd have at least two or three bards, and I always thought dps variety was nice. So I went as dragoon.

Was good, unless there was a second dragoon... I used to think my disembowel didn't stick... I didn't realise there could only be one disembowel up at a time and that it wasn't a dot like chaos thrust is... so I'd often disembowel combo OVER AND OVER.
No one ever called me out on it. It was just a weird quirk of mine, they probably all thought (and I went into df as bard, usually).
Needless to say I got a LOT better since those days last year, ahaha.

So my first job was DRG and then I went for SCH and fell in love with healing and then BRD ended up somewhere after those among the other jobs. So these are the 3 that I most prominently remember making mistakes on (aside from the troubles of learning to hold aggro as a tank).

So didn't do the DRG rotation properly at all when I first started out and just struggled to dodge. Also flipped off the edge with Elusive Jump in Titan and into the death-wall in T5 and T9. I now know the full rotation and can perform well, just not a fan of melee DPS anymore.

As a BRD I have killed myself multiple times with Repelling Shot. I've done it and fell of the edge in Titan. Another time I was playing it in T5 and hit the wall. I also hit the wall again in T9 while tanking the Golem because I'd use it for movement to get to meteors...buuuut I was on the wrong side of the Golem. I'm a decent BRD, but I prefer to DPS on BLM.

When I started leveling SCH, I: used Eos on Sic for a while, didn't let the fairy do most of the work, and just struggled in general to balance MP management and keeping up with healing. Also used to do lots of over-healing. Now I practically heal on auto-pilot all the time. Back when I first started healing I never would've thought I'd be trying to get in as much DPS time as possible or letting a tank's HP dip down to 1k and then getting them back up with insta-heals or even solo healing raids or EX trials.

Kinda in hand with Dragoon mistakes, I would wait to use Elusive Jump cus I figured I was in mid-air, this must be invulnerability frame of freedom or it would consider me at the target location but nope. Elusive, land, drop. xD

I played 1.0, so most of my early mistakes are from that era. Mostly, it was picking on enemies which were a thousand times tougher than myself, since there was no easy indication of how deadly an enemy was. Wow that seems kinda fun not knowing if an enemy is far stronger than you or not. Would add to the sense of danger on the world, atleast until you're max lv
