Novice Network Feedback for SE

I think it's best for now that they take down the mentor system and remove the rewards completly. The rewards only attractes the poison to the newbies and will scare them away.

I already seeing mentors in the roulettes with behavior of a 5 year old and even in the Linkshells where I am part of. I see people with the most selfish reasons being mentor. The same people that only will help if they can get a poetic bonus.

I still will help new peeps when they need it , but I will do it without the mentor system. The best reward for helping someone is giving a push in right direction and they having fun while learning it.

I see no problem with chat, it just makes things seem more friendly and welcoming to new players, so long as mentors are stopping to help new players when they DO ask questions of course. I see no reason the channel has to be kept silent at all other times.

I do agree we should be able to leave and enter chat at will though, I like to help out, but when I am running dailies etc. there is no reason I should be using one of the 100 mentor spaces when I'm going to be silent for an hour or so.

I think it depends on the chat topics. The chat I've seen has mostly been about complaining how bad other players are in various content and talking about the newest patch 3.2 content. I doubt the first topic makes anyone feel welcome and the latter is about content that doesn't concern the newbies in any way and hence shuts them out of the conversation, making them feel unwelcome. I wouldn't mind the chatting if it would be about things that concern the newbies, like asking them how they are doing and talking about their class and the game in general. Avoiding spoilers would also be important in this channel. What annoys me is when the mentors use the channel as their exclusive chat channel to discuss stuff interesting to themselves while excluding the sprouts.

Yes lets only have legacy players be mentors that is such a great idea. NOT.

I love the novice chat but really, its not fun when its just a general chat to those that don't care and kick cause whatever reason, example.

Slightly off topic, but I really wish you could be a student even with every job at 60. I know I could do better with, say, machinist and I know there's dozens of guides online, but they're also written in a manner that confuses me. Doesn't help english isn't my first language. I'd much prefer if someone who really knew their job could mentor me on rotations and such in simple plain english and show me move by move how it's done.

Been seeing a lot of the same issues myself... Half the time when someone says "so what's everyone up to?" I end up replying "awaiting a question to be answered..." But some possible solutions (most agreed with few new/innovated ones)

1. Opt In/Out Manually for BOTH Mentors & Newbies? Maybe have it require talking to The Smiths to opt in for a few hours at a time. Could also just remove the 30 Day CD for opting out of mentoring and use that so mentors can regulate when they are actually availble to do just that... Teach...
2. #1 should help, but get the ratio to favor new players on my server its general M2-4:N1 kindof need it more like M1:N2-3
3. Remove run completion achievements and add a new commendation system just for new players, with a negative option so new players can filter out bad mentors. Then use it for achievements. Might also be nice to have the reverse so mentors can commendate receptive new players who are trying to learn rather cause players grief.
4. Change the Mentor Roulette drastically... Why is high lvl content even on it? At that point PF/FC should be reasonable sources such as FC/LS/PF. im sorry if it seems callous... But if you managed to get into ishgard you should be past the point of needing help finding help, and thats being generous... Really should be independent enough to know where/how to find help by the time you hit garuda story.
5. Maybe add a Mentoring PF tag so some who ACTIVELY wants to teach higher lebel content can show as such, and/or the opposite 1+ people LOOKING for someone to teach content. But really point #4.

So far on Midgardsormr help comes to those who ask but its usually like 100 Mentors for 15 Newbies... So really it ends up being a large social LS til someone is coaxed into asking for help. Tho ive found toxic newbies to be more common, i think the system is also growing the "do it for me/hold my hand through it all mentality" but still too new to give credence to that.

6. But shrinking down the channel population and making multiple instances of it per server, almost like FC chat as opposed to LS so still /n /b for everyone rather than /n# like LSs. Say 10 Mentors 30 Newbies and have up to 10 instances of it assuming theres enough newbies.

Also god 1k is restricting when typing on a tablet /pant... I agree with person who said original posts need more space... 2.5k maybe for starters.

About Mentors chatting among themselves in novice channel: I believe this channel exists to help other players with whatever question they may have. On my channel there's someone, who keeps telling off every mentor posting something not in response to a new player's question. However, even though we met the requirements to become mentors, we're still not all-knowing ourselves. So I feel it is completely ok for a mentor to ask a question (as long as its game related) and for other mentors to answer him, even if it is an endgame question and new players probably wouldn't understand.

On a sidenote, I also have no problem with newbies asking for help with filling their party in that channel.

I agree with the manually joining the Novice chat for Mentors. Having it the way it is currently is assuming every "mentor" is as helpful as the next, and that's sadly not true. Requiring people to go out of their way to join would weed out a lot of people who are only in it for the shiny crown.

Side note... I cant even do mentor roulette since i havent unlocked/done all the reqs for it ><. To be fair i expected Mentor Roulette to be a secondary lvling roulette with worse queue times...

I do agree, the fact I have to have all the extremes of AAR cleared for the mentor roulette makes NO sense. Those are optional contents. :-/

I still have like six "???" and no idea how to find them. :-/

People complain about mentors only talking to each other, but what are you supposed to do if the newbies refuse to talk when approached? You can't force them to ask for help.

Personally I don't find this to be the case at all on Lamia. For the most part the mentors in the channel will let the sprouts ask for help, but every so often a mentor will just put out a message letting them know we're there if they have questions. Very little in the way of mentors spamming the channel like that, though we have had a sprout who's been added (without being asked before-hand) complain about not being able to leave and having to deal with the 'spam' as we assist other players. So I suppose it kind of cuts both ways. I think it should be required for the sprouts to accept the network invitation in the first place, but I also think it should be easier to leave the channel aside from going, 'OMG please kick me!'

When you select it on the dutyfinder roulette list... you can still read the requirements on the right after using the scroll bar. Its a long list of dungeons, trials, and raids. The red text is annoying but u should still be able to read it.

For the mentor roulette you need to clear everything through the ARR EX Primals as well as the current primal Normal Modes and all the dungeons. The only things you don't need to have cleared for it are BisEX, RavEX, ThorEX, Seph and Alexander (either arm).

I could not yet comment about the network as not once did i have access, it was always full yesterday :(

Same here, despite being a mentor have never once connected to the channel after zoning countless times. That might be a blessing at this stage, I'm not sure :) Will leave the tag on and the little leaves are free to seek me out if they wish.
I expect it will shake out and get a little more sensible once the novelty has worn off.

mentors spoiling the story is way worse than anything.... this ppl should get a warning at least...

There should really be no problem with mentors asking questions. In fact, I would encourage it because I've seen mentors who say they simply don't know the answer to a question. Also because newbies and mentors need to worry about different things: Newbies the basics, and mentors the advanced stuff. They'll both be terribad if they don't learn these things.

I think having a general/trade chat in cities would go a long way to solving the problem. If people already have a channel to chat away on then that will leave the novice chat for people actually asking questions and seeking help.

I think one reason SE might not have put in regional channels, like General or Trade, is to keep RMT spam down. In Aion, the main channels like Trade and LFG are pretty much wall to wall texts of spam from RMT. It's awful and pretty much non-stop. I think that's what SE might be try to keep at bay.

I agree the Novice Channel is being spammed a lot by a large portion of Mentors chatting about FCs, endgame, and bickering over what the "proper way to play" is, especially surrounding the recent tank changes. I've see a few of us on midgardsormr reach out and actually try to help through the chat, sometimes it gets through, others it's lost. Its hit and miss. A lot of other times I can't even get into it myself due to the 100 limit and afks not being removed.

Novice network needs to be treated has help only and less of a general channel. But maybe because we lack a general channel is why people are resorting to use it as one maybe?

+ 1 to the option to opt-in to the Novice Channel.

If I am too busy to Mentor I won't talk anyway. Let me opt-in when I have time to be a good Mentor.

Not that I am able to get in the channel very often as it is always full. Probably filled by people who just have the chat hidden anyway...

I don't know if this would really work since you can disable the afk icon. If you guys do this, it needs to be able to detect how long the player hasn't moved regardless of their settings.

Really underwhelmed as i have only been able to get into the novice network twice since it started :(.

There are a lot of changes that could be made, but a majority of them have been covered.

However I'd like to point out something... I became a mentor to help people. Mostly to help players that are new into the game. If I que for the mentor roulette, I shouldn't really be getting Ravana EX. Sure, I don't mind helping others with Ravana EX and getting them their clear, and getting my tomes, but in all seriousness content that is level 60 should not be on the mentor roulette. Could argue that even level 50 content shouldn't be on it either, but I suppose considering there is a substantial amount of level 50 content and it would be hard to tell when the player is "more experienced with the job system"...

It's probably been said before. But I personally think Mentor status as this game wants/intends it shold be something players have to apoly for.

Player submits application, GM/whoever reviews it, checks player's achievements, class progress, general conduct (how often they've been reported/kicked and what they were reported/kicked for), then approves/disapproves mentorship.

As being a Mentor in this game is honestly more of a selfless choice it should be treated better.
Like how EQ had players called Guides.

I disagree with the "everyone should be one system" as it currently stands.

I thought the Heavensward EX primals aren't a part of the mentor roulette?

I hope there's a possibility that some get stripped of their mentor status on here.
As there are some people who are stirring a pot of drama in there and cannot leave personal affairs outside of the Novice channels.
Quite some unjustified kicks have been going on and hope it will get looked into.

The Mentor channel on my server has become a mix of Barrens chat and crafting sales.

This better not be SE's official stance, because that just opens it up to abuse and unfiltered nonsense that doesn't belong in the channel.

Going to say it, I'm not a Mentor. When i heard about the Mentor idea in the beginning I thought it would be specific Mentors for just 1 or 2 jobs, but finding out that you need to have a tank, dps and a healer at 60 kinda erked me. What about the people who, while only have 1 or 2 jobs at 60, are actually good at their jobs? I remember reading in this thread that there should be ranked Mentors, like for example, theres a sch looking for help but theres only a Mentor who leveled whm, theses jobs, while technically similar, are not totally compatible like the whm doesn't know if eos/selene should be on obey or sic. Maybe there should be chats with just jobs specifics like a chat for Scholars with just 1 Mentor and like 10 trainees( If you have all heals at 60 then you can join other chats) so it'll be more geared towards that job.

Also maybe after the trainee leaves they get the option to rate their Mentor based on how much they went out of their way, or if it was just in dungeons. Also if they were fulger or inconiderite ( This stuff should be consider reasons to stripp the Mentor title) . If they got reviews that said " He tried to help but his tips weren't helpful " then maybe another Mentor with great reviews can co Mentor the chat to make corrections or clear confusion to both trainees and the other Mentor . Also make it possible to let green leaves decline the inv to the chat thats impossiblly annoying. O also make the chat excesible to those who want help, theres tons of evidence in df that just because you're level 60 doesn't mean you master a job. Rate this from 1 to 5 if this was a great idea :)

No you still need Sephirot normal and A1N to A4N completed for Mentor roullette.

To get mentor roullette you must complete all trials and dungeons from 2.0 to 3.2 with the exception of Rav EX, Bis EX, Thordan EX, A1S-A4S and Alexander Midas.

The queue is pretty fast too surprisingly. The only positive thing I've gotten from mentor...another roullette...

- Remove the 100 Mentor Limit and increase it to 200 or 250
- Consider the Implementation of multiple and language based Novice Networks, freely to choose from which language

- Consider Mentor-Points (like recommendation), so you can see who is actually "qualified" and didnt just reached the "requierements"
- Allow Mentors to be removed without loosing their status

- Consider WHAT you really wanted to achive , after 40h of gameplay you might still need tutoring

PLEASE tell me that this is a safe kick-able offence. This imo is one of the worst sins you could commit in a channel for newbies.

No you can be banned for " unfairly " kicking" someone for doing this
