Greetings, everyone,
I want to share comments from both Naoki Yoshida and the English Localization team regarding the passing of Sian Blake, the English voice actor for Yugiri in Heavensward.
Quote:
Yesterday, I received unfortunate news from the agency of British voice talent Sian Blake confirming the passing of Sian and her two children.
Sian was a gifted actress, her masterful portrayal of Yugiri leaving a lasting impression amongst our fans. I had hoped she would be with us for many more performances to come.
I am deeply saddened by this tragedy and offer to Sian and her children my sincerest prayers.

There are no words to describe the shock and disbelief we felt upon hearing the tragic news about Sian Blake and her two young sons.
Though we only had the chance to work with Sian for a short time, we were glad to have such an accomplished and dedicated actress on the project. She brought life to a character dear to our hearts, and we will always be grateful for her contribution.
Our thoughts are with her family and friends.

I think it would a nice gesture add a memorial to the game for Sian and her two children.
Thank you for those messages Bayohne. If Square Enix is communicating with her family at any stage, please pass on the condolences of the players on Behemoth who are part of my Free Company and associated link shells. I feel sure that there are a very many players throughout all of Eorzea's instances who would likewise want to express their condolences to Ms Blake's family.
One thing that I have learned through playing MMORPGs, and FFXIV exemplifies this very well, is that the impact and influence of such games goes well beyond the scope of the game itself. Each player character we see and interact with is more than just an avatar, there are real people behind every player character. A living, breathing being with wants and needs, feelings, opinions, loved ones, and friends. Those real people deserve our respect just as we deserve theirs. When an active player passes away, it leaves a hole in their community that will be felt by all that knew them.
In this way, FFXIV and the communities on each of our worlds as well as the greater community of FFXIV players from all worlds, are no different from the real life community, or society that we physically live in. As such, we must remember that everyone deserves respect and compassion. When we lose someone we know, perhaps a friend, or merely an acquaintance we all feel a sense of loss and sorrow. When a voice is silenced are we not all diminished to some degree?
The passing of Sian Blake and her children is a painful reminder that our community is not limited to the world server we play on, it's not limited to the game itself. No, that community extends outward including those responsible for developing and producing Final Fantasy 14. The voices of the characters we interact with in Eorzea occupy a firm place in that community, they are in a sense more real to us because we see them when we play, we hear their voice and work with them.
Some may say that what happened to Ms Blake and her children is an unfortunate and tragic event, that the impact is just a change in voice. However, I think that misses something important. When we play in a virtual world such as the one provided by FFXIV, we inhabit it, we learn to like/dislike characters in that world, and connect emotionally with those characters. One of the biggest reasons we can connect with these characters is the voices that give them life. Without a voice, they are just images and text on a screen. But with a voice, the character becomes multi-dimensional, they come alive to us. We remember them, their voice, their emotions and the events we shared with them, they walk the path of life with us in Eorzea.
When one of those voices falls silent, it should sadden us all, because something special has left our little virtual world. Of course, the fine folks at Square Enix will try to find a new voice for Yugiri, and she will once again live on our screens and in our ears. A tough task to be sure, but like in real life, we have to put aside our grief and move on. But that doesn't mean we stop feeling or forget those we have lost.
I am saddened by the loss of Sian Blake and her children in a stupid, senseless act of violence. I hope that her family can find some solace for their grief in the knowledge that Sian Blake touched the hearts of many, even those who only knew her voice.
Nice to see gamers on Siren showing the class, compassion and fellow feeling that we all should show. Thanks for posting this.
I think it unlikely they will create a memorial to a specific real life individual. However, I think it would be very fitting to create a memorial to those who's voices are now lost to the world. In that way we memorialize the life of a talented actress who lent her voice to a character in our world.
I think it would be more respectful if she was referred to by her name Sian Blake and not by the character she played, as she was the second person to voice the character and SE will hire another person to do future voice work of yugiri. RIP Sian Blake
Well, this is upsetting.
My condolences to Sian Blake's family for their loss. It is truly terrible to lose someone close to you.
As much ppl want that from a company, don't get your hopes up. The best they can do is offer their condolences, other than that it just reaching. There some things they can do and others they can't because that person is a VA or a developer. That's what i've noticed so far. If ppl want to see a memorial, it's up to the players to pull that off in this community as it's been done before whether it's from cancer or other worse case scenarios.
I did suggest that, but I did not want to claim to speak for anyone except my FC and circle. So, I wrote the following to cover the more general playerbase...because I felt that players in general would also wish to express their condolences;
My apologies if that was not clear enough.Quote:

As tragic as this is, I wouldn't want to see any sort of change or addition to the game made because of Ms. Blake's passing. Both because it feels ghoulish and exploitative to turn a real-world tragedy into video game content, and because I dislike the precedent it would set. I've seen people asking for memorials for lost FC mates and current events like the Paris shootings last year as well. I don't want to play a game full of morbid memorials that have no place in a fantasy world; I want to play a game that lets me not think about the awful stuff that goes on in real life for a while.
Regarding said partner mentioned in that article, he ran off to Ghana, and will be extradited back to England to face murder charges.

Then go play another game.
Final Fantasy XIV isn't just your preferred form of escapism, and there are millions playing the game just like you. Many of them may have lost friends to real life tragedy, and that small digital memorial might be one of the only pieces they have of them left. At least for a time.
Let them be.
That's horrible :(
May they rest in peace
If SE spent development time, manpower and server space making memorials for every real-life tragedy that happens, there wouldn't be time for anything else, and the game would become a creepy digital graveyard. And what happens to those memorials when the servers are inevitably taken down, some day hopefully far in the future? If you lose someone in your FC or friendslist, it's okay to have a player-run event for the people who knew them, but when you start asking SE to expend resources on it you're getting out of hand. Even worse if it's NOT someone you knew personally; a person's death shouldn't be exploited to get free stuff in a video game.
If you absolutely MUST have a digital memorial, why not go make your own game and name a character after your friend?
That's not necessarily true. World of Warcraft made a Robin Williams tribute when he passed. Granted, she may not have been as famous, but she played a far closer role in FFXIV then Williams did with WoW, as far as I know I think he just played it from time to time.
They should just add some kind of "remembrance spot" where people who wish to do so can pay tribute to those who pass away--people related to the game, either by friendship or their work/influence on it.
..You people really do not disappoint...
This thread.. wow. 6/5
Hehe, just thought of something...with people asking for instances where they can have tombstone. Kinda remind me of similar threads; more plot for housing needed... Instead of new ward for housing, it'll be new ward for graveyard; plot will come in three sizes for the dead at different values and people who wants it pays it to keep up. 1m for small, 2m for medium, 4m for large. So at lease when people asked why we don't get new housing, we can say it went to the dead...
Yes I'm annoyed...
Also, I feel that once the PR Team informed the people of what SE had done, any further suggestion should not be needed and the thread locked. As the thread is to mourn the dead and not what we want the dev to do for the dead. Unless it is being kept open for the amusement of seeing community argues...
