They once were. I believe it was patch 2.2 which implemented personal housing.

They originally had said I believe was in a live letter long time ago, was before personal housing was released of course, stating that FC housing and Personal housing would be separate. But I guess they decided not to do it due to server expenses or something along those lines. Can't remember which live letter or whatever source that came from when Yoshi said it, but I remember them talking about it.
If only they would, and increase the amount of items you can place in houses too while they're at it. :P I just wish there had been more information given to people other than just the people who were losing their houses. Would have been nice at least for people on higher population servers to attempt to get sleep/eat/bathe/etc. without feeling as if they're going to lose their chance at getting a house.
As someone with anxiety, you're pretty much describing me Vell. It's awful and yeah, I joined right as housing for individuals was added and couldn't afford even a personal room at the time. It's pretty much my main goal in game, above leet gearz, savage clears, or being the most glamourous Femroe on the server (not that there's a lot of competition).
That's a tiny bit before my time (started in 2.3) but I am aware that used to be the case. Should've stayed that way imo.
Yep, you're right... And yet Final Fantasy XI, a 14 year old game, managed instanced personal housing from the start, later adding big garden extensions!
Goddamnit SE! I wanted to buy a plot this morning. I even got up early for it, and now there's even speculation that the demolitions won't even be today? D:

Q4: We have the auto reclamation this month, but can you please let us know about future addition of land?
A4: We have confirmed that we will be increasing the amount of land for existing housing areas in Patch 3.3. After this we’re planning to introduce mansion type housing, and housing in the Ishgard area. These two are being developed in parallel, but in order to meet everyone’s demand, we will implement the mansion-type housing as a first priority. Currently it’s being planned that one mansion will be able to hold 512 residences. As for gardening, we think this will be difficult, but we’re currently developing new pots that will allow gardening, so please look forward to this.
As for furnishings with high demand, we have a goal now to increase the amount of items which can be placed, so please wait a bit longer.
Yes and no. People used to just make their own FCs to obtain houses, which if personal housing had never been released we would be seeing a ton of single player FCs and a lot of amazing raiders who would have been unable to join their current FCs (that's an entirely separate conversation lol.) Personal housing is great. It just could have been implemented differently. Unfortunately you can't please all of the people. At the end of the day it's better than having no housing whatsoever.
They are actually increasing the item slots! This was a point addressed by the recent live letter. As for the high pop thing, I just assume I'm going to miss every open plot. I hope I camp the best choice and it would be great to obtain my FC's house this way, but alas.
Thanks Felis!!
Also unofficial, this Reddit thing.
I just got lied to by a friend of many years about houses being up, rushed back home for nothing, ruined everybody's Christmas and ended up throwing up from the crazy running speed right after the feast. All for nothing.
At this point, I don't care anymore, I'm getting that plot even if it kills me >.>
The day is ruined anyway...and that friendship too, kind of xD
I want to say "Good job, SE!" but I guess I have no one to blame but myself for trusting someone else for mere 3 hours...
OHHHHH... the "mansion type housing" that was mentioned in the live letter... I just realized what that meant. That's a terrible translation error, and should probably have been questioned before putting it out in English.
"Mansion" in Japanese is used to describe apartment complexes. So saying "I live in a mansion" has a low income context to it in Japanese, as opposed to saying "I have a house". It's completely different from "mansion" meaning a giant private residence.
So the "mansion type" housing in Ishgard would be like instanced housing rooms, without yards or outside areas. It will likely be the same as FC private rooms, but they aren't linked to fc housing or regular housing wards. Of course, I'm just assuming that by the fact Yoshida said "mansion" as an English word.
They should probably address what they mean by the word "mansion" as soon as possible.
How about that? To have a Mansion in Japan is the exact opposite of having one in the US lol.
Well daily reset has come and gone now too and still no change. I'm pretty annoyed ATM.
It's Christmas and people are trapped waiting on the houses for hours/days, why would they do this to players? Give them exact demolition timer on the house plate or something.
Beyond it being particularly obnoxious on Christmas, long term this makes this system so awful. You won't ever know if a house has been or will soon be relinquished unless you compulsively check and keep track of the plot(s). People flipping houses to gouge others is already a harmful problem on large pop servers. Now it's only going to get worse as the average player won't be able to camp housing 24/7 to see when one hits the demolition time (after this initial period).
1 house per account should be implemented immediately.give all alts access to the house, non one will mind that. Make house purchases a blind auction.
I have until the 29th to decide if to keep my goblet mansion or not to but the issue is I want a mist large but I only get 80% of what I payed for my house so I would get maybe 30mill back and for a just demolished large you have to pay atleast 72-84 mill.
one question why don't SE for say a nominal amount of gil allow conversion of house private to fc and vice versa even if only implemented one time only to prevent RMT?
They probably will when they implement that "transfer system" they talked about two LIVE letters ago. But it will probably only come with 3.3, when apparently Ishgard wards come up and they want to allow FC's to be able to transfer to Ishgard without losing literally all workshop progress, rooms, furnishing, etc :)
Ishgard housing wards won't be in 3.3. They're increasing the amount of plots in the current housing wards in 3.3, with Ishgard housing and mansion-type housing being introduced after that.
Though, you're correct that a transfer system like that will likely be around with the introduction of Ishgard housing.
ok my house is near my old fc who I kind of had an argument with and started my own. My issue is I can't deal with people especially elites that use parsers and say I'm no good if I have to throttle my damage if that tank cant hold hate and such. many people who don't play mnk fail to realize greased lightning is our 3rd move combo that is 10% dmg and 5% sks so MNK opens at 33% less dps due to we gain one stack every 6-7 secs and only effective at 18ish secs with 3 stacks or like 3 secs opening perfect balance which no one should do to allow tank to hold hate.
I used to play on tonberry and that servers eng population is toxic and fail to adapt to a less stricter server like my current.
So would it be wise if I kept this house regardless of the risk of seeing people from my old fc in hopes SE actually implements a transfer system?
As for me my fc is just myself and a friend the other 2 people alt accounts for when we get a house and I have a house can no worry's tenant my friend but..... we cant build a workshop and the more nicer things a fc can..
There wouldn't be any housing issues if the inventory spaces were extended. That's the major reason why one would buy a personal house in addition to an FC one.
No problem. I've been upall night try to obtain a hen's tooth, aka personal house. checking wards since the servers came back after hot fixes. I'm a little tired and more than a little pissed off at the total fuster cluck that SE has turned housing into. I apologize for being short with you in my response. As you can see though, I am a case in point, a company master seeking a personal home.
That's what I'm assuming as they said it would accommodate 512 residences. I actually would like to see how it turns out. It could be really nice, like if they included a veranda or porch with every residence. In the Mist you could sit outside on your personal veranda overlooking the ocean :)
Look, day isn't over yet, give it time. And, Happy Holidays.
