Are you misinformed or purposely spouting crap? I play with two addons that actually affect gameplay, and they are DBM and Recount. Surprise surprise, not 30, not 20, not 10, not 5, but 2. The other addons are user interface related, and I only use two of those, ElvUI and Storyline. There is literally no reason to be against a parser other than being afraid that your poor performance may be outed, the majority will not give a damn if you parse poorly in a dungeon, only content that actually has DPS checks.

For fights where the numbers are needed: Yes.

Also DoT ticks are missing in the log at all. Thats the reason the parsers are a little bit inaccurate. They try to calculate the DoT damage itself. Because of RNG, there will be always a difference in numbers and crits.

WoW vids say other wise lol. I watch WoW vids on occassion and see wall to wall addons, just because you 2 you are not the entire WoW community. And I'm not for or against parser I just don't like the crap attitude, and people do give a dam about leveling content and parser use. Every time I see pre casting mages I ask why, every reply was "dps", even though its being problematic. Not to mention tanks in full str gear full pulling dungeons not caring if their hp drops like a rock giving their healer wrist issues trying to keep them @ 50% hp.

And personally speaking having a high dps doesn't mean your a great player just a hard hitting 1, I rather have people master the content instead of trying to zerg it down with arbitrary numbers.

Its not always players not wanting to be outed for supposedly low dps, its the crap attitude that comes with it.


I honestly do not play with any damage numbers, i just don't care anymore. I improve just fine by watching other players, asking questions, and if able looking up a guide or just practing the content or my class. In reality DPS check is just a buzz word. Playing a game is playing a game, it don't take much to learn content or how to play.

Also please explain how people played ff11 in japan @ launch, considering it was ps2 only? This game though slower paced combat also has "dps check" fights and content.

Parsers are ONLY against the ToS currently because they are 3rd party software and SE as a software developer cannot assume responsibility for any potential damage users altering their game files might cause to their own systems.

It is an issue of liability and nothing more.

When official add-on support is finally green-lit i assure you one of the first if not the first add-on created will be an official parsing program, at that point it will be up to SE if they have any other reasons why they should or should not be allowed.

Additionally with the beginner's hall being added they doing so in the form of the creation of challenges for the player to overcome but there is still no mention of a specific reason to not add a reference of numbers, it's entirely possible and very likely that the memory limitations of the Ps3 prevent them from adding such a feature to the current UI which is likely why we still don't have add-on support 2 years into the game's launch, however that much is speculation on my part.

The point still stands is that so far there have been zero comments from SE, Naoki Yoshida, any member of the development staff, GM staff, or community staff saying that parsers are against the ToS for fear of harassment.

So can we bed that issue and move on already?

Those addons are for convenience, QoL and the like. Your exact statement was that WoW players require that many addons, when it's not the case, not even close to being the case. Of course more people use different addons, more addons, but they're not required to be good, nor are they recommended (I find it hard to play when 90% of my screen is UI). When I go into DREX I try to push out as much DPS as possible, sometimes I see someone doing 600 DPS but I move on, I don't scream at them, the same goes for WoW.

You do know that part of mastering content includes pushing out huge amounts of DPS while executing mechanics? 99% of the content has very simple mechanics, there's no mastering to be done, you run it once and you know everything. Extreme Primals is different, you run it 4-5 times and you have the mechanics down to a T, then you've learnt it, mastering is when you can do all that while pushing out maximum DPS. There's always going to be bad apples, parser or not. I've seen people claim other people are dragging the party down when they're the ones doing the least DPS.

My experience from wow is way different then yours. I was given a full list of 10 addons i HAD TO download, but due to sharing the computer with 5-6 family members i couldn't. The reaction i got from explaining was i was lazy. And, did it ever occur to yoy that, you maxing out ur dps is being a problem to the group? Like getting a fresh tank? I have seen and experienced alot of stupidity in dungeons from 15-60 its mind boggling all for sake of dps. Maxing out is 1/4th of gameplay the other 2/3 are a mix of learning the content, teamwork and communication. Maxing dps should be last on your list and only in preformed groups.

When ppl go ham on df groups or random pf groups i call it "soloing ina group" been saying that since this whole parser bs started on ff11.

I personally feel there is no reason to out people, you have no idea who they are, what their doing, or where they live/what their net is likwe. You have no idea how new they are to the content, or to the class/job is on the content. If your only reaction is "you are the weakest link, goodbye" <kick> then you are being part of the issue.

It is also tiring seeing pro parser players rant up and down about dps, but also come up and say "its not my job to teach", it is again being part of the problem.

Again im not for or against parser, just the above attitude.

Could you list these 10 addons? I can't possibly think of 10 that could be mandatory, if you're not a very skilled player there are some that may help, but that's still not 10.

Most of these aren't even required, so please, list these 10 addons. As for fresh tanks, I've yet to encounter a tank that was unable to hold aggro in the level 60 dungeons unless I was an idiot and was attacking a different target. Ninja opener causes some issues, but that's a non-issue with Shadewalker. Maxing DPS is secondary to performing mechanics, but if you can't do both at the same time you need to improve, period. You aren't a great player if you can only do one or the other.

I honestly don't remember this was back in 2009, My apologies for not remembering. I do have ADD and I have a cold at the moment. At the time I was playing as a warlock i wasn't even joining to raid either just have ppl to chat with :/

What you described is solo gameplay, and assumptions. I have had issues tanking in neverreap cuz i was a fresh tank vs a max geared blm going ham. Which is what I was saying. I also 1-2 years ago trying to do garuda ex and a brd going ham made it hard for me to pull the adds. and instead of adapting just bitched.

This was just trial df runs and i told the group i was new. I'm always forthcoming with stuff like that and always willing to take advice, and always ask how i do to help me improve.

If you're raiding with PC players, FFlogs is an amazing way to analyze your DPS. There's a massive pool of players to compare with and plenty of stats and analysis to play around with. While it will never be able to give you on the fly results, that a parser will, it's a good alternative until they release the API.

I just wish it would let you view your own parses from all the uploaded - even unlisted ones and private ones and such - but only your bit. As it is currently you are relying on people making them public - and if they parse low some won't make them public.

I don't know why people keep responding to Azazua. All he does in every single thread that even hints at an inkling of pro parser use is spread misinformation and fear-mongers, even when those such as Odett, Archaell, and Aomine1992 calmly point out the benefits of parsers.

Ask your raid members to upload as "unlisted". They can still link you to the individual report, it just won't be listed on their page and shouldn't be ranked.

Yeah but that's annoying. I have an account on fflogs so I can easily see all the reports that have been posted that include me since I join farm parties and other places. And it would be nice if those marked as unlisted would be registered there as well for easy viewing - but as said only for my own bit. It would still be unlisted to anyone without an account or link to it.

But it has been helpful what I had to figure out where I can improve. That and of course getting comfortable with the fights themselves.

DPS will always be important to raiding content, and yet we're capable of clearing content without parsers as we are now.
I've never needed a parser to improve myself either. Is it handy to sometimes be told what my actual damage is in relation to others in my party? Sure. But thats just confirming something i can already see in how quickly my target is losing HP.

This isn't a solo game, the DPS Jobs don't all do exactly the same DPS output as each other. Nor is it expected.

The problem has never been Parsers themselves. it has always been on the players heads for putting that damage meter up on a pedestal and venerating it as the sole indicator of winning or failing.
Square knows for a fact that as soon as a parser or meter is available in any way, shape or form, players will begin to judge each other by that meter.
Even a strictly personal meter can have negative communal impact, as there will inevitably be those who demand screenshot or video proof of you doing XYZ amounts of DPS in order to join a party.

In a contest between having meters/parsers freely available and not having them, I'll take not having them because i don't feel like dealing with the things i dealt with in WoW, especially up around the mid WOTLK and early Cataclysm eras. Specifically, people being booted from raids for falling short of "expected" DPS numbers by as little as doing 9900 DPS instead of 10000 flat despite the fact that the boss died. Not to mention those who would constantly post their DPS into chat and belittle everyone else for not being as "good" as they are. Also, it was fun when

Also, Odett, you do realize that If I'm doing twice the DPS as the Ninja i will eventually surpass him on the enmity again, even if i do use something to reduce my Enmity. Especially in a long fight. Not only that but you can easily check the Enmity list before any such Enmity Reductions happen.

You say that DPS only matters in WoW in Mythic, yet the majority of the people who want a parser are on PS4 and doing Savage. They don't want it to belittle people. They just want to improve themselves in the most challenging content. There's no fun in gloating to people who don't parse and aren't putting up competitive numbers anyway. It must be depressing to think so poorly of the community here.

If not seeing how much DPS you can pump makes you 'frustrated', then...I can't even.

Faust requires 6300 dps to kill. Thor requires about 7200 for 75% and 8100 for 69%. (75% is the ideal for a smooth kill assuming you keep doing your best while doing mechanisms).

To be honest yesterday I went a1s opressor for the first time... What I realised? Ppl say savage is hard? Compared to Thor it was even relaxing. Now I want to train a2s. Back to the same issue evry person ik has statics and no1 wants to do it in pf... Cmon... Ik people who killed Thor ex 30x+ in pf. Why not do the same with savage?

Why do people think that when someone is doing very low dps that telling them they should go (when / if implemented for all) use the parser to improve their rotation to, I don't know, actually learn how to correctly play the job? Its not a judgment. Its helping the person out. I'm just baffled by what the problem is here.

I've had runs where we've hit 69% and skipped the tank buster, and some where I've screwed up entirely and dropped Enoch and we still were like 72% at worst. So I've no idea where 75% comes from. Either way, you haven't really appeared to understand the point of my post, which was that in that particular run, DPS was truly terrible, and with no parser, I have no idea who was practically afk'ing.

Because for every person who calmly, politely and helpfully informs someone of their low DPS and seeks to actively assist them in improving...

There are 1000 idiots who scream, throw tantrums, vote kick, vote abandon, verbally abuse, refuse access to groups or generally misuse the information presented.

Given how people behave now with perceived low DPS, ill leave it to your imagination what those people would do with hard numbers that they could cram down their victims throat.

I still don't get it, whether the people are nice or mean about it the end result is the same, the subject finds out 1. My DPS can improve and 2. I have a way to test out what I am doing wrong and fix it. Its the same way in real life at a job, if your not doing it right your going to get fired. They could do it mean or nicely, but at least in the game you get a chance to fix what your doing wrong and come back with the correct solution. So I still don't see your point.

Which is exactly why we have GMs.

Players don't need a parser to do that currently and the solution is the same, you call a GM.

last I checked everyone has equal access to creating a party in the PF, if you are removed from one create your own. If you are being removed from Duty Finder parties for your performance on a consistent enough basis that you are unable to complete content it's probably a sign that there is something wrong with your playstyle in which case i would hope you would improve to the benefit of both yourself and future parties.

In fact all of the above scenarios are already possible and currently do happen to tanks and healers.

And all of this really only applies to endgame content, nobody cares about sub par DPS in like 98% of the content in the game. Even if many players are aware of it they're likely to speak up about it in content that matters and only if that player's performance is a detriment to the progression of the 7 other people in the party.

In which case it's no different than calling attention to a tank or a healer who is unable to perform.

We don't have to imagine.

Parsers / calculators have been a part of MMO culture since the beginning, i mean If we really want to get meta about it the ability to quantify, evaluate, and share data when it comes to games has been a concept as far back as math has been around.

It's almost as if stats, score keeping, and performance evaluation have been a part of nearly every single team oriented game in existence.

So can we not treat this like some unknown and uncharted subject of exploration, or try to play up some perceived negatives that we already know to be false over large sample sizes?

Some people will be jerks about it, those people will be reported to GMs.

In my opinion, the victims are the ones that have to bear with insufferably low dps players who can't be bothered to learn a basic rotation.
Those people like to cram down the: "my 15$" or "I have a life" excuses down their victims throats.

I think what really needs to change is the notion that someone can't improve without some form of external quantifier beyond what you can see in everyday execution. I'm not that different from the ex-lalafell, I've been gaming for decades and not once have I needed some calculator hovering over me to improve. I just play, keep an eye out for what hits harder in what order, repeat it and if it's consistent I remember it. If not, I try a different routine. It's not that hard to do. If someone suggests a different way I give it a try and give credit where credit is due if it works for me. If not, or if it's something I'm already doing, I still thank them for the suggestion. But it's still all very capable without a parser. All a parser is is a calculator. If you need a calculator to improve that's fine, more power to you, but don't assume noone else can't without it.

And now we can regurgitate again how you don't need a parser, why you do need a parser, how a parser makes everything better, how a parser makes everything worse, try and fail to make compromises, then we can call out each other for lying or fear-mongering again, insult each other as elitist/filthy casual, put up some gifs, wait 'til someone puts the discussion back on track, then start anew from the beginning.

Except there is only one correct side, there should be a parser. The only counter argument is people whining because they wouldn't have an excuse to play badly anymore, they have the tool to learn correctly.

Obviously you don't need a parser to improve, but when the majority of the playerbase does less damage than what they should be doing just doing their 1-2-3 combo there is an issue, good thing there is a solution.

The people defending the idea of having no official in-game parser are doing nothing but handicapping a large protion of the player base.

Many PC players use parsers. Parsers are not going any where. We use parsers because there are fights that have very hard enrage timers and dps checks. PS3 and PS4 players can't parse without a friend helping them out. This is a terrible handicap that any parser opponents are inadvertently perpetuating.

Just get over your fears of harassment. Like others have said in this thread, we have GMs for a reason. If you're getting harassed, contact a GM.

Stop downplaying the potential for harassment, it's a very real fear, it just doesn't mesh with your personal desires with regard to parser use. As for having GMs for a reason, yeah, we have them, but I am not sure of the reason. Based on personal experience and the experience of many of my friends, GMs are reluctant to do much of anything unless a completely egregious offense has been committed.

As it should be. This game would have no players if a GM banned people over some mary sue getting super offended for one reason or another. I have no personal desires with a parser because I have access to them with virtually no penalty looming over my head *if I choose to use them (/snicker).

And you know what? I still call bad players out, without citing a parser. So, this whole sense of "we need to protect people from harassment" is just a poor strawman. People already get called out, it's not something that will go away. Parsers are not going away and people like you are creating two tiers of players by trying to police interactions over the internet.

The problem of 'just leave it to the GMs' is how many GMs do you think we have? The GMs have to deal with alot more than just calls on harassment, which are probably alot of calls ranging from chat harassment to abuses of the /vote systems. There's the thousands of RMT reports, bot reports, bug assistance. They are busy people and often deal with issues as they get them, meaning your harassment report could take hours to resolve. By that time you've done moved on and likely only remember the other person's name because you wrote it down. Assuming you did write it down. Making your defense of potential harassment from parsers, "Leave it to the GMs." is incredibly shallow. We, as a community, need to make such potential harassment a sticking point of any parser use and actively try to keep the abuse to a minimum.

Except that it isn't as it's been brought up and disproven in literally every single thread that this debate has taken place in.

That argument is the last bastion of defense against parsers that keeps being used as a counter in lieu of an actual argument against their use, and it's one that is far from legitimate.

In fact you can look at WoW, the game with arguably the largest sample size in the world and see how this isn't a real issue over large sample sizes, this video actually talks about this:

We also know that harassment already happens regardless of players having a parser or not as another player has already done an independent study on this with an admittedly small sample size here:

Additionally Yoshida has been interviewed multiple times about this subject and then development team has no fears about any negative community issues from parser use as seen here:

If you really need to see this argument done to death 100 times though you're welcome to take many of the responses from this 80 page thread that disprove the thought that theres a "real fear" of harassment from the addition of a parsing tool.

The Real Problem with Parsers

Nobody is downplaying anything, if anything the arguments against the addition of a parser are playing up small issues into something greater than they are when yes, we do have a competent GM staff that can sort out issues of real player harassment.
