As for the Dark Warriors being primals, we do know that primals are not really the gods they are based off of, but figments of imagination in their image, made flesh.

Then again we don't know all the differences between a Primal and an Eikon other than age and the fact that they can apparently be substantiated without followers (and even that's a thorny issue since Zantetsuken tempers its wield to become the next Odin, while Bahamut had a graveyards of followers inside Dalamud, and yes it might as well been a graveyard, if not a personal hell, for the treatment of the Meracydians, but that's another topic)

As for Minfilia...welll everyone else has been confirmed alive. It would be really cheap if it turned out that everyone beside Teledji made it out alive. Even Nanamo. Sure Thancred and Y'shtola changed a lot, but we need at least someone dead. Might as well be Minfilia.

I'm betting Mercydia. If it was Azys Lla, Hraesvalger would have said so, since he's been there. Nidhogg is going to do something that will get Tiamat involved, she isn't going to stay in that Neurolink in 4.0. I expect she'll side with us, rather then Nidhogg, when he finally goes to far in relation to Bahamut or any remnant of her brood.



As for Krile, the Journal for 'In the Eye of the Beholder' states she has both the Echo and the Blessing of Light.

I interpreted Emmanellain his particularly un-enthusiastic attitude as that he is actually in camp "these new revelations on the dragonsong war don't sit well with me". Problem is, his house is 100% supportive of Lord Aymeric, and that puts him in a really tight spot. Another possibility is that someone (or some house) is pressuring him into things he doesn't want. We are told Lord Fortemps had to endure a lot of slander, and it is possible that people have been trying to get a foot in the door by blackmailing/threatning Emmanellain. I admit I haven't spoken to him after the story though (went to look in his old spot and didn't see him there, and didn't look much further).

Lord Fortemps mentioning that Aymeric is 'like another son' to him made me notice that Aymeric shares the same clear blue eyes and raven black hair and the Fortemps boys and for a moment I was afraid he actually IS another son. But I think I am going paranoid here.

I noticed that as well, but I think the scene was more about how he was overlooking his own son, who was standing right there.

Honestly felt really short, and not a whole lot really happened. It felt like simply setting up the "patch plot" so it can all get knocked down in the future updates.

Thanks to the lack of dumb filler quests it kept everything focused, but felt short due to the lack of padding. There's one thing I'm still hung up on...

Why is Thancred wearing a blindfold over one of his eyes when you can clearly see in the flashback stills that he was teleported with both of his eyes intact nor does he mention being seriously injured while living in the wild, not that I was expecting such to begin with. The dude was murdering bears completely naked with sharp rocks. Seriously like no one is even concerned over this.

Other than that, super lame to just get immediately ganked by WoDs and having my Virgil 1 fight stolen by Thancred like that. Anyone else notice that ever since 2.5 every story fight as transitioned from pretty down to earth, although pretty flashy to big dumb anime fights with characters leaping 30 feet into the air and energy explosions?

I think someone earlier in the thread mentioned that, if you look closely in the flashback scenes, the covered eye is white, implying he's blind in it like Y'shtola is, but since he lacks the ability to wield aether, cannot develop aether sense to compensate.

Personally, I'm kind of hoping the problems with Y'shtola and Thancred are either resolved, or we see some means to compensate for them. Maybe Matoya will pass on her crystal to Y'shtola so she doesn't die in a few months time. As for Thancred, maybe he'll tame a Griffin and use that to get around?

I'll concede to that I suppose. The detail must have slipped my mind. I was busy admiring the wildlife.

It was a very impressive bear.

Overall the new Thancred design gives me a Papa Nier. Maybe a subtle nod since the main artist is also on the new Nier project.

Okay, so, for a cultural frame of reference on what's going on here: Monkey D. Luffy, captain of the Straw Hat Pirates in the shounen manga epic One Piece, was revealed to be burning away his lifespan when he triggers his Gear Second waaay back in the Enies Lobby arc. This was ten years ago, real time, and even discounting how bloody slowly time passes when updated at a pace of 19 pages per week, there was a two-year timeskip in there, also, and yet Luffy's kicking around just fine with no end in sight. Such is shounen manga.

Right now, I'd say it's best to think of it as a really slow burn, one that will take years to start showing any adverse effects. There are ways it can be dealt with later, but I imagine it's a fairly long-term plant, not something to be handled immediately.

That's fair enough, Fenral, though following the Final Fantasy track record, I just get the vibe that it wouldn't have been brought up at all if it would not have some visible presence moving forward. I can't imagine it'll be ignored until the 5th expansion when we're invading Garlemald. Then again, I may be wrong.

When meeting Krile she says something akin to that each person having the Echo (or the blessing of light, can't remember which one right now) has a different ability. Hers was to being able to understand animals (but not beasts or something). In fact after meeting the warrior of darkness and witnessing the vision, she says hers also included the buzzing of the hive mind (being near their colony) and that her head was buzzing. Has this point (that echo users have different abilites) been discussed about before?

About Thancred's eye, I'm pretty sure it's still there. I recall him saying something like "I know what you're thinking, and don't worry. I'm using it becauce it helps with the ladies" or something like that before taking the next quest from Alphinaud.

As far as I understood, Krile meant that her Echo basically allows her to be a translator. Anyone who speaks a language (so not animals or beasts since they don't use a spoken language mostly), she can understand it. This would be why she was able to understand the Hive Mind, or at least hear them somewhat. Just my two coppers.

It's legacy info, actually, dating back to the 1.0 story quest "Fade to White." Up until now, most of us just assumed that 2.0's take on it was a retcon, as (2.0) Minfilia seemed to imply the Echo was the same for everyone, and was even doing stuff with hers she wasn't in 1.0. Perhaps the simplest explanation is that it starts differently for everyone, but always grows towards the same end result.

First I want to mention that the writing was great this patch, the conversations between Alphinaud, Krile and Matayo was funny and showed that Alphinaud might be a commander/tactician, but he is still a teenage boy, with teenage boys urges. ;)

Pros
- The story was great, we saw what happend after the big reveal.
- New and returning characters have great designs, I like their outfits and hairstyles.
- I have seen alot of character developments with some of the NPC, which makes me glad to see that SE does not only focus on the Scions.
- A certain minion at the end of the questline.
- No pointless filler content, we got story and they delivered.
- Preview for 3.2 was revealed.

Cons
- Story was great, but the MSQ felt very short this patch.
- The WoD and his companions, did not impress me. The dialogues was very cheesy, which is odd, because the dialogues between Aymeric and the Count or Alphinaud and the ladies was well written.
- Once again the WoL (us) is doing nothing, but giving a nasty glare. I know that the encounter was used to introduce both the WoD and Thrancred, but I disliked how once again (like in 2.55) my character is doing nothing. I would have preferred that the WoD and WoL were fighting and the WoL started to lose and then BAM Thrancred showed up and we see the cutscene of them fighting. This way it shows that the WoD is a threat, but also show that the WoL has a rival and needs to become stronger.
- Alot of things are not being answered, like the Blindness of Y'shtola and how she is going to die, if this does not get solved. Why was Thordan so afraid of us, we saw the black shadow as our character, but I want know more.

For 3.2:
- its pretty obvious that we are going to see Yda and Papalymo and help them with their troubles.
- A certain twin sister will probaly contact her brother and she might reveal that Urianger is working or on friendly terms with the Ascians (still confused, they killed his best friend/lover).
- Another encounter with the WoD and another glimps into their past.
- The relationship between the Ishgardians and the Dravenians. Maybe Nidhogg will start to attack the Elezens, which inturn starts the drama between the two nations.

I realy hope they keep the whole no filler stuff, but I wish we had more story. I liked 3.1 storyline, but it felt very short and aside from meeting new people and finding old friends, we have not made any progress.

OK, since there's been a lot since I said anything last and I was too tired / busy to do anything but snark last night... or yesterday morning... or whatever (time's weird when you do night shift), I'll be a little more objective now that I'm not excited from the new story content (and I can't waste time playing Lord of Verminion right now for... reasons).

Only on two main points, though, since there were scant few details elsewhere.

On Thancred
-He is, functionally, now a Garlean. Y'shtola's Flow could have blinded him in his one eye (left, I think), but his one is still functional - I'll need to review the still shots of him with nothing but the Nutkin to cover his naughty bits. Either way, he has lost the ability to use even the most basic of magic, and is now visibly aging as a result. I think it was stated somewhere long ago that the Archons were all using some sort of magic to halt their aging, and now that Thancred can no longer do so he may have quickly reverted to his true age.

No matter. He won't allow it to stop him and as far as I'm concerned he's just gone from "handsome" to "ruggedly handsome."

On The Chronicles of Gerun
-It seems to be a book of fate, with everything that has happened and will happen written in it. I admit I jumped the gun and was being too subjective when I blathered about changing fate, but the Ascians have so far seemed intent on "correcting the world" into what it was meant to be, and as Hydaelyn's agent (and thus her acting will) they constantly antagonize us. More importantly, if it is an accurate predictor of the future the Ascians should know that trying to fight us is futile; if that's so, why do they continue to do so? Without knowing that the Chronicles says the end of this all will be, it's impossible to say what we're going to need to do, but there may be some destiny screwing in there.

But then again, there may not be. Time will tell. Perhaps 3.2 will finally give us that carrot they've been dangling in front of us since godsdamned 2.1?!

"Of all the tales, this one is the one you need to be reading. That's the true genesis of this world, and its destiny. Surely it's obvious that not the power of the Warrior of Light, the Garleans, or even the Triad can change anything. All of our histories have been preordained."

I agree on Thancred; he lost an eye because he was fighting godsdamned bears naked with rocks. In a way it's impressive that's all he lost. There's nothing mystical about it.

I still don't get why people think he's being "friendly"; across multiple languages, it's been obvious that he's saying he'll hear them out, not get friendly with them. He's hearing them out because every damned thing went to hell in 2.55 and even if they're responsible for the death of Moen, at this point there's no harm in at least hearing what Elidibus wants to say.

And this is reinforced in 3.1, because Urianger sounds deeply skeptical more than anything. And I suspect he's finding more backbone now that the team is slowly being found.




What I want to know is - why on earth are they so adamant about not showing Yda's face? They've always, always been extremely guarded about that, and what we saw of her eyes didn't seem THAT exotic. And since when is she so down with Rhalgr? One gets the impression there's some history here we haven't heard about before...

Agreed. Even if it someday goes that way (and I don't think it will), it has never moved beyond skeptical, protected meetings with an emissary. There are ancient, sacred rules of nonviolence for such a meeting. Remember how offended Elidibus was when he thought you might strike him? And that he was remorseful for having darkblasted Minfilia for trying to restrain him?

I used to have to cite multiple languages to give the rounded idea that he's there by invitation for discussion - Elidibus proffers a point of view, Urianger considers it while learning what he can. But this patch, it's clear. This is what you had me come all the way out here for? Hmph. Apocrypha. (A word meaning either that the author is unknown or its claims are considered inauthentic, and thus it is considered outside of a given established canon.)

Having seen flashes cheek, eye, forehead, and hair (enough to make a composite portrait), unless SE retcons in something we've never seen where it "should" have been covered (and they very well might), Yda just seems to prefer to have her face covered. In 3.1, I think they were just hiding it out of tradition - that we haven't seen her before and it's better to do the revelations in 3.2 - her patch (and Papalymo's).

While it might be a hint about connections with Ala Mhigo, she's at least down with Rhalgr because he's the god of destruction and patron deity of people who punch things. She may not be a monk (as far as we know), but Eorzea is all about the Twelve and he's a good match for her; she likes punching more than puzzles. Imho, separate, her and Papalymo weren't really cut out for the Circle's purposes, but together they were among the best the Circle had to offer.

Or that - following the retcon over the "shouldn't have seen" forehead we've "seen" previously idea. Cid's third eye was added in ARR, as well, since you shouldn't have been able to see his forehead in 1.0 (though you could if you just clipped his goggles). She does have blue eyes...

And that's why I immediately responded with the "anything can change" line - he's sounding an awful lot like Fire Emblem: Awakening's Validar at this point, a villain who is obsessed with following a preordained destiny to the ruinous future. (Cf. the protagonists, who are absolutely against this path to the point the main protagonist's battle cry becomes "Anything can change!" compared to Validar's "It has all been written!") Even if The Chronicles of Gerun is an accurate history of the origin of the world, and has been accurate thus far, armed with the knowledge of what is "supposed" to happen it should be possible to change it. A future isn't something you choose, after all - it's something you create, and there's no reason we can't create a future that's not written in the Chronicles.

Well, besides the fact that this is a game and the story is not in our hands, but... details, details.

I doubt yda is garlean mainly because she didn't have her face covered around the refugees, which would very unlikely let a garlean help them if they knew about it.

Not to mention when Haurchefant said he would join the WoL to save Aymeric his father was heavily against it. However when Artoriel says he'll enter the vault his dad all but nods. Then when he gets out his dad gets all mushy with Aymeric and barely look his way, yeaaah ouchie.

Rewatching some of the cutscenes, I can't help but feel something is up with the Ascian, or the situation with the Ascian, the Warriors of Darkness "killed" in the vision you see via the Echo. The scene seems intentionally more ambiguous than normal, given Echo-scenes in 2.X and 3.0 tend to be relatively blatant and revealing. The journal doesn't help either, just saying it appears they fought him like you fought Lahabrea.

I think they're going to revisit that in the future.

Yeah, she seems very focused and serious when she was helping the "masks" more so than I've seen her in ARR.

I think she's Ala Mhigan, as well. It's certainly possible she might be half since Arenvald (in the rwaking sands) is half Ala Mhigan-Garlean and has the echo

3.1 referenced a lot of the other games, but in particular FFV with Krile, FFIII with the Warriors of Darkness, and FF1 with the Crystal Eye. And one biiiiiig theme in all three of those games was people who saved the world being forgotten.

In FF1 it happens when you defeat Chaos' time loop paradox and create an alternate reality where you never existed. In FFIII it happens when the Dark Warriors defeat the Light in a Pyrrhic victory and are forgotten by the main society on the floating continent. In FFV it happens TWICE, once when the legendary twelve defeat Enuo, and again when the Dawn Warriors return to their own world after defeating Exdeath.

So in FFXIV, we have the original Warriors of Light, whose names and faces have been forgotten after the Calamity and Louisoux's time nonsense, only to be replaced by the new Warriors of Light.

FFIII, which is the only one that directly names the previous heroes as "Dark Warriors," they saved the world from being consumed by Light, after a technologically advanced civilization harnessed too much of it.

Well, Light in FFXIV would functionally be aether. And what have we been doing? Killing Primals left and right, releasing their aether. Turning on Allagan machines that process and/or collect aether. Releasing enormous amounts of aether to kill Ascians and/or dragons. Not to menion Garlemald and all their shenanigans.

What if all the good we're doing is creating an imbalance of Light, and the Warriors of Darkness--the forgotten heroes of the past--are here to set things straight?

This is somehow makes me always "meh" when my character doesn't have any moment but just standing and sheathe weapon to WoD. It's gonna be awesome if our character have battle cutscene too :(

At multiple times and in multiple ways, our "end goal" is stated to be a total and decisive victory for the Light. There was, just once, the tiniest bit of a hint that this is, in fact, a terrible idea, but it's too soon to say if that hint will actually lead to anything (if you happen to have anything to add, use that thread, so we can keep this one in 3.1 land).

Our battle cutscenes aren't cutscenes, it's when we participate ourselves. So, we had our "cutscene" in the last quest instance.

But to be honest, the real reason is because there are so many jobs that they'd have to render the scenes differently if we wanted an actual fight and not something like using a generic Blade of Light. A Scholar bopping a dragon over the head with a book and parrying with it a moment later, then forcing him into submission would be amusing, but not realistically viable.

Edit: I agree with Fenral as well. I don't think a total decisive victory for light is best for anyone. Duality tends to be a major theme in Final Fantasy and you can't have duality with only one side.
