Seems like you should stick to games you can easily put in 1-2 hours of playtime and put down. MMOs are definitely not that.

Level 50 content is no less relevant than 1-49 content and 51-59 content. You may not be getting levels but you are still making progress, for example unlocking high roulette and trial roulette, advancing the story and getting gear.
I guess it was good for you that you got bored already. You saved yourself some time and money, because this game isn't really suited for people with the end-game-only-max-out-quick-to-start-raiding-and-grinding-tomes mentality who don't appreciate the journey. Doesn't mean the game is bad or that you are a bad customer, it just means that you don't match their target audience. If I may recommend another game, you should try WoW. Leveling and story are irrelevant there, but raids are really good and have lots of bosses.
Also, it was not bait and switch. Here's what 3.0 patch notes say:

Quest
Coming to Ishgard
Required Level and Location
Disciple of War or Magic level 50
Intercessory (X:6 Y:6)
NPC: Alphinaud
Players must first complete the main scenario quest "Before the Dawn"
If you pre-ordered before reading patch notes which were released on June 19th, the official pre-order / early access page also says you have to have made sufficient progress in the main scenario in order to access the content. There is no way you can blame the company for this misunderstanding. I'm very surprised you got refunded in the end.
As already said, I am in a similar situation, and it took me just about a month WITH watching the story, leveling a secondary job, and having to grind gear.
Not to mention that you get a HUGE advantage for HW content by running lvl 50 quests after release since you will get EXP for it, and won't have to grind in HW.
It takes awhile. My friend that did the quests with me, did one dungeon alone, he waited over an hour. I know as a tank I waited over an hour three different times, which is unheard of.
I don't think he's over exaggerating, and even if he was, honestly anything longer than a day is unheard of for accessing expansions.
That's all this game is. >_>Quote:

I played WoW for years. Quit in Cata, and came back for WoD but was completely disappointed again. The leveling was the only thing I've enjoyed in that game in the past few expansions. I have no interest in Legion.
FFXIV has been completely the opposite. The leveling is boring as all hell, but the few Trials I did have all been fun, and so have the dungeons. Ramuh was my favorite boss fight since Kael'thas.
Well I guess anyone that would really want to keep playing into the expansion would just grind it out. Even playing 2-3 hours a day will get you through in a few weeks. Thats about what it took me to get through from 2.1 to 3.0. Not even playing everyday either.
What dungeon was that? I can imagine that happening in the High Roulette dungeons, but those are mostly optional. Anyways there is an easy way to avoid this - if someone takes a long time to get in, queue up right after the roulette resets, nothing should take over 15 minutes then.
And what do you base that assertion on? The Expansion is NOT standalone, it's a STORY expansion, so of course you need to finish the previous story. This is not WoW.Quote:

Yoshi has literally gone on record that he doesn't think the game actually starts until level cap. Leveling is just a tutorial. Those are his words. >_>
While I'm not the kind of person who generally wants to rush to endgame, I think it's wrong to try and present this game as something where the journey is more important than the cap.
Why did you bother making this topic?
It's honestly not that bad...I don't really see the rush to get to SWARD anyway lol...you just end up doing the same stuff. It is the same exact system we had from 2.0. >.>
Take your time and enjoy it...before you end up like a lot of us who are bored with nothing to do XD
good story and full 110 gear idk seems worth it considering you get levels as well. I hear level 52 is the normal before even reaching hw. I personally enjoyed the story and didn't mind having to do the quest to get into expac. Although I appreciate how this game lets the experience unravel.
You can finish all of that stuff in like a day. If you have a job, maybe a few days. Not that I have any motivation to convince you otherwise, if you want to leave the game and have gotten a refund, leave the game. Some aspects of all MMORPGs are going to bore you at some point, so I'd stay away from the genre.
This doesn't make any sense. You didn't enjoy 2.0 to the point you weren't even able to complete the main quest (bare minimum).
You weren't magically going to enjoy 3.0, not even if you had access, so don't worry, you haven't missed anything.
Just find the situation a little odd here. OP says he had a full time job and couldn't burn through content to get to HW quickly which is understandable as many are in the same boat. But then he claims he only started 2-3 weeks before the expansion and still somehow managed to level to 50?
Furthermore says levelling 1-50 was really enjoyable to him (in another thread) but somehow doing comparatively the same stuff with probably even better story is totally boring him to the point of quitting? Just because those content isn't the absolutely newest shiniest things? OP even said Ramuh was a really fun fight for him. If content is enjoyable, why would it suddenly be considered irrelevant?
Just a little confused as to what the OP is looking for in the game
Hey, another "gimme, gimme, now, NOW!" Thread. This mentality disgusts me.
So you got your refund for HW. Good for you, if that's what you wanted. I am curious though, seen as you're level 51, obviously still playing the game (or you're at least subbed because you're able to post on the forum), what are you going to do in the game? Do you plan to continue playing without HW? If you do plan to continue playing, it's only a matter or time before you repurchase HW, surely? I'm just curious where you go from here.
Especially since, having purchased the expansion, the OP was not actually locked out of leveling 50+. Yeah, there's a bunch of story in between 2.0 end and 2.55.... but this is a Final Fantasy game. That's the GOOD part to most RPG players.
It's possible to burn through 2.1-2.55 in a weekend if you are a tank or healer, or if you have a tank/healer helping you with the queues. We did it for my best friend just before HW dropped.
Heavensward is an expansion. It expands on where ARR left off. It's been common knowledge since 2.55, and probably prior, that you would need to complete ARR's main story to access Heavensward content. I am sorry that you refunded HW, OP. Now you are missing out on a great amount of content that will only get bigger over time.
I don't know why people complain so much about this requirement. Had they not imposed this restriction, we would probably have more story complaint threads asking what the hell is going on.
I will never get the "content is irrelevant" mentality. If you haven't cleared it, then the content is relevant to you. And FF14 is one of the few MMOs out there that actually makes an active effort to make old content to continue to be "important" to do. They might not do the best job, but at least the devs actually care about everything else that isn't end game like other games.
Sorry it wasn't what you wanted, OP. But people really need to research what they buy before they throw their money at it. I am glad you got your refund (or I'm assuming that's what this post is about?) though. No need to stick around if you didn't enjoy it.
It wouldn't be so bad if the stuff at level 50 was somehow still relevant in a way that got people together in the same place and communicating with one another. The one consistent complaint I've always had about FFXIV:ARR is that it is built around content that doesn't require social interaction and the content that does was slapped in as an after thought. Even in dungeons there should be choices that require people to ask one another what they want to do next. After all, if the game is designed to make social interaction unnecessary why bother making an MMORPG at all? Multiplayer minus the social factor is a lobby game.
Thank you for the laughs!
Let's see... You are not good with that "reading" thing - as made obvious before in this thread already with people pointing the plethora of news on the subject and patch notes warnings, states the story and lore they worked on is irrelevant (on a story-driven MMO), and even though each patch added like a couple of hours of main quests each (including reading them, not just running as fast as possible through them), after "a month" you did not finish... And thinks the game should magically just work the way you "think".
The game's story is relevant. You are irrelevant. Well, hilarious - but still irrelevant.
If you don't like the story you can press esc to skip a scene. You also played before the expansion came out... and you clearly know about the forums which was filled with information on heavensward... so I'm not sure how you didn't know that you have to complete the old story to play the new story.
Going to mirror this sentiment. Again I feel as if people treat individuals in customer service often as second-class citizens often. There's a level of common decency I'd like to have show in through my door when people are coming in to be helped. But this dog-eat-dog business world has us pandering this plastic plastered face in fear of a bad survey that has way too much impact on our paychecks then what I think it necessary. There are just some people I feel need to just be turned to the door and realize who they're speaking to are human beings that deserve to be treated well in turn.
In this case, I wonder why people play games they're just going to skip through to begin with. There is literally no rush in this game, no purpose to push hard as the steps you make are either going to get easier while you catch up, and there will always be progress 'upward' to be had.
Take your time, enjoy the game. If you get too sucked into the idea of progression you stop having fun and burn out so much quicker.
Steps of faith for me, I forgot what dungeon he was waiting on. I was doing doing it after reset, not that I planned that because of the roulettes it just happened to be at that time. Still took me an hour for steps of faith, three times (due to people not following directions, ugh).
Why does everyone bring up WoW as if WoW is the only MMO in history? I'm basing this off of every MMO I've played and I've played almost everyone out NA, RU,JP and KR servers/games included. Every MMO has a story, every single one, so using "story" isn't a good excuse. Not everyone cares about story and it shouldn't be forced. Because guess what? Those don't care don't read it and in the end still have zero clue what's going on.Quote:

LMAO
OP buys a game that is heavily story-based.... complains about having to play through the story.
All Final Fantasy games are heavily story oriented, even their last MMORPG was heavy on story. On top of this, it was stated prior to the expansion being launched that people would need to complete the main scenario to access Heavensward. There was plenty of time to cancel your pre-order or not buy the game, for those who joined us post-launch.
If you don't care about story, that is fine, there is an option for you. Simply click the escape button on your keyboard and skip the cutscenes, this will save you ample time.
Not non-stop (since I had a job and all and was taking a summer class), but it took me 3 weeks here and there to finish patches 2.1 to 2.55. I'm sorry you felt that way, but the story got really great up to 3.0. I'm sure you will reconsider in the future. Oh, why did you get a refund of Heavensward? If you register the key on your account, you will already get all the benefits of the expansion :(
K, lets bring up Final Fantasy XI, Another MMO mind you that the main focus is Story content, if you didn't read it or anything then the game was not to the players liking. FFXIV follows the same concept of a story focused life style with more non-PvE content than its predecessor. But what I am generally saying is, players in FFXIV that don't enjoy the game's story, bypassing where possible, tend to moan about minuscule stuff moreso than the others that do enjoy the story.
To this day, I still fail to understand why people buy an expansion that they know absolutely nothing about.
It doesn't even take that long in retrospect to get to heavensward. But it's just as well, if fetch quests turn you off you're playing the wrong game anyway.
Sorry it didn't work out for you.
